Did you know that April is International Guitar Month? This week Tidbits gives you a few facts you probably never knew about the best-selling musical instrument of all time, one that is played by more than 50 million people worldwide. • The guitar is a chordophone, an instrument that makes its sound via vibrating strings tightly stretched between two points. The word “acoustic” refers to a guitar that is not electronically amplified. An acoustic guitar produces its sounds by transmitting the strings’ sound waves to the air, and their vibrations resonating though the guitar’s body and out the sound hole. A soundboard, a thin sheet of wood, is placed under the strings to increase the resonance. Electric guitars have electromagnetic pickup heads that convert the strings’ vibrations into electrical signals, which are electronically fed into an amplifier.
HISTORY OF THE GUITAR
• The guitar’s origins date back about 4,000 years. The oldest known image of an instrument with a guitar’s feature is 3,300 years old, a stone carving of a Hittite minstrel in Turkey. An archaeological museum in Cairo, Egypt, is home to a 3,500-yearold guitar that belonged to an Egyptian singer named Har-Mose. His instrument was made of cedarwood with a rawhide soundboard and three Guitars: Turn to page 3

An elephant’s first tusks begin growing at birth, then fall out after a year, similar to human’s baby teeth. The tusks are about 12 inches in length when they fall out, and the replacements continue to grow throughout the elephant’s life. In addition to tusks, an elephant also has four molars about the size of a common brick, two up and two down, each weighing about five pounds. They are used for grinding and mulching its food before swallowing.

strings. • Ancient stringed instruments used tortoise shells or hollowed-out gourds, with a bent stick for a neck, and strings of animal gut or silk. • In the early days, a guitar was defined as having “a long, fretted neck, flat wooden soundboard, reinforcement ribs, and a flat back, most often with incurved sides.” • The word “guitar” is derived from the Spanish
word, guitarra, which is a very large six-string acoustic bass played in mariachi bands. Other ancient terms from various languages include gitarre, qitara, cithara, kithara, and sihtar. GUITAR NOMENCLATURE
• The neck of the guitar is comprised of the
headstock (at the end of the neck), the fretboard (the fingerboard), the frets, which are metal strips embedded on the fretboard, the nut (a small strip of hard material at the junction of the headstock and neck with a row of small notches, one for each string), the tuning pegs, and the truss rod, a sturdy metal reinforcing rod that runs inside length of the neck.
• Frets are located along the neck at exact points
that divide the scale into half-step intervals. Which fret the string is pressed against determines the note’s pitch.
• Decorative materials are usually set into the exterior of the guitar, such as dots on the fretboard to mark the positions or around the sound hole of acoustic guitars. These are known as inlays and are frequently made of mother of pearl. Inlays around the sound hole are called rosettes and serve as a type of reinforcement to the opening. • Acoustic guitars might be classical or flamenco versions. The classical guitar has a wide, flat neck to enable musicians to execute scales and

Many guitar manufacturers today are small companies that stress detail and quality. During the past few decades, guitar production has become more mechanized, allowing for greater speed, higher consistency and lower pricing.
• Although he was a saxophonist rather than a guitarist, a southern California inventor named Leo Fender founded a new guitar company in 1946. In 1951 he introduced a new solidbody guitar that would become known as the Telecaster. (It was first called the Broadcaster, but this was a conflict with a drum kit with the same name.) A FEW THINGS ABOUT
JELLY BEANS With National Jelly Bean Day scheduled for April 22, Tidbits wants you to be in the know on this favorite confection. • Did you know that jelly beans were the first
candy to be sold by weight rather than by the piece? In 1905, the first recorded ad for the little beans was published in the Chicago Daily News, with a price of nine cents per pound. However, a Boston candy maker named William Schrafft was making them long before that, encouraging people to send his product to Union soldiers in the Civil War. It wasn’t until the 1930s that they became associated with the celebration of Easter.
• About 16 billion jelly beans are manufactured
in the U.S. every year just for Easter. Laid end to end, that’s enough to circle the world more than three times.
• The process of making jelly beans is called
“panning,” a method that creates the firmer outer shell while preserving a gummy interior. It takes between one and three weeks to make a jelly bean.
• In 1869, 24-year-old German immigrant Gustav Goelitz and his brothers established a candy business in Belleville, Illinois, featuring caramels and candy flowers for cake decorating. His sons relocated the business to Ohio in 1898, and specialized in candy corn and buttercreams. The company remained

I am happy to report that awesomely campy, sudsy nighttime soap -- which airs on Lifetime -- will indeed be back for a rip-roaring fourth season. After all, we need to know if Adrian (Tom Irwin) and Evelyn (Rebecca Wisocky) survived that horrible explosion, which killed baddie Sabastien (Gilles Marini) and mostly goodguy Michael (Brett Cullen), if Rosie (Dania Ramirez) will get Spence (Grant Show) back from the evil Peri (Mariana Klaveno), what will happen with Zoila (Judy Reyes) Judy Reyes and her baby, and if Carmen’s (Roselyn Sanchez) baby that she gave up for adoption years ago will resurface. Prepare to be tantalized by all of these revelations -- and many more -- when the show returns on June 6. And check back here often, as I am presently setting up interviews with some of the series’ stars, and I’ll be sure to get the scoop on what will

“Wonder Woman” is indeed coming to the silver screen, but not until June 23, 2017. The action flick stars Gal Gadot as the titular character, and it will be an origin story illustrating the transformation of a young Princess Diana into the greatest female warrior of all time. She’ll get training help along the way, from the likes of her mother, Queen Hippolyta (played by Connie Nielsen), and her two military aunts: General Antiope (Robin Wright) and Antiope’s lieutenant, Menalippe (Lisa Loven Kongsli). Director Patty Jenkins defended the look of these Amazon warriors to “Entertainment Weekly”: “I, as a woman, want Wonder Woman to be hot as hell, fight badass and look great at the same time -- the same way men want Superman to have huge pecs and an impractically big body. That makes them feel like the hero they want to

What do the following comments have in common? “I’ve given her tongue lashings that would wake the dead and ostracized her to the point of feeling guilty like an abusive jailer.” “I’ve bitten her on the neck and stared her straight in the eyes.” “I use a pronged training collar, which makes a world of difference.” “When she goes after my hand, I push it farther into her mouth.” “What can I do? I have scolded her, slapped her, isolated her, but nothing seems to work.” Answer: They are all confessions of dog abusers. These were nonchalant comments dropped by ignorant people in the course of explaining to me the problem with their dog. What they don’t realize is that the dog is not the problem. Their dog does not obey. His behavior is embarrassing. They are frustrated. Exhausted. At their wits’ end. And on and on. But none of the dogs subjected to the abuse laid out above were ever trained. In all fairness, how high should the expectations be? One woman said, “He won’t come to me.” I asked her whether he had been trained to “come.” She said, “Well, I bought him. Shouldn’t he come to me?” A signature on a check means nothing to a dog -- and neither do the words “come” and “no” unless you teach him. None of the “techniques” quoted above constitute teaching or training. Most of them were bad ideas pulled from the Internet in a misguided attempt to fix a serious problem. If you were diagnosed with cancer, would you turn to the Internet to nail down a treatment plan? Would you heed the advice found on Orville’s Free Oncology blog? Of course not. You’d turn to a doctor, a professional, a specialist. CASEY’S CORNER: Turn to page 10

Do You Owe Taxes on Social Security? One of the perks of retirement for many seniors is not having to pay taxes any longer ... at least most of the time. And when we discover that we do have to cough up tax money after all, it’s a tough situation. According to a Social Security assistant deputy commissioner in a recent newsletter, one-third of seniors receiving benefits have to pay taxes because of disability and survivor benefits, as well as income that is in addition to Social Security. You’ll need your benefit statement (Form SSA-1099), which you likely received in January, to calculate whether you need to pay taxes. SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau
Still More Confusion About the April 30 Social Security Deadline I think I could write a column every day from now until the end of this month with a headline that screams: DON’T PANIC ABOUT THE ALLEGED APRIL 30 SOCIAL SECURITY DEADLINE! -- and people would still be panicking. At least, that’s what my emails are telling me. It seems as though half of the senior citizens in this country think they have to do something in the next several weeks with their Social Security or they risk losing untold thousands of dollars in benefits. Apparently, I can’t repeat this message often enough: The April 30 filing deadline applies to only a very small handful of people who are not yet getting Social Security benefits and who are already 66 or will be turning 66 soon and who want to employ the file and suspend strategy discussed endlessly in this column. I’ve spent the last two columns explaining who those folks are. And I will spend the rest of this column answering emails to help explain who those folks are not. In other words, these emails come from people who are examples of the vast majority of Social Security beneficiaries, or soon-to-be beneficiaries, to whom the April 30 deadline is meaningless.

Q:
I was planning to file for benefits on my ex-husband’s Social Security record in a few months. I will be 66 in July, and he is 64 years old. He is not yet getting Social Security himself. Based on columns you’ve written in the past, I was led to believe that I could get benefits on his record even though he hasn’t filed for benefits. But a financial planner told me that new rules passed by Congress prevent me from getting any of my husband’s Social Security until he actually files for benefits. If he is right, can you explain the new rules to me?

will reduce their survivor’s benefits. You’re a lower-earning spouse: If you’re married and your lifetime earnings are much lower than your spouse’s, you could take your benefit early but your higher-earning spouse should delay. This lets you increase your household income now, while the higher-earning spouse’s benefit grows, therefore increasing the survivor benefit.
When Does it Pay to Take Social Security Early? Dear Savvy Senior: I will turn 62 in a few months and am trying to decide when to start taking my Social Security retirement benefits. Almost everything I read on this topic tells me it’s better to wait until my full retirement age or beyond. Is there ever a good reason to start early? -- Ready to Retire Dear Ready: You’re right! Most financial planners agree that waiting to take your Social Security retirement benefits is a smart financial move. Why? Because each month you defer, from your 62nd birthday to your 70th, your monthly benefits grow. That adds up to around 6 to 8 percent higher payments for every year you delay. Yet despite the financial incentive to wait, most people (58 percent of men and 64 percent of women) claim their benefits before full retirement age, which is currently 66 for those born between 1943 and 1954. But speeding up the clock isn’t always a bad idea. Here are some scenarios where it may make sense for you to collect early. You need the money: If you’re retired and don’t have enough savings or a pension to cover your living expenses, you’ll probably have to start early. But, if you decide to work, be aware of the earnings test. If you claim Social Security benefits before full retirement age (and you don’t reach 66 this year), you’ll forfeit $1 for every $2 you earn over the earnings limit of $15,720 in 2016. It usually doesn’t make sense to take benefits early if you’re working, unless your income is below the earnings limit.
This strategy is best suited when a lowerearning wife is three to six years younger than her husband and her earnings are 30 to 40 percent of his. She should claim at 62 and he should claim at full retirement age, or better yet wait to age 69 or 70. Because the husband is likely to die earlier, the wife’s reduced benefit will be temporary and she will then qualify for the higher survivor benefit.

Guitars for Vets with PTSD
Sometimes it takes more than a prescription and behavioral therapy to control the symptoms of PTSD. The answer to the struggles with stress and depression faced by too many veterans may be as simple as a guitar lesson. Guitars For Veterans was started in 2006 by a guitar teacher and one of his students. You have poor health: Having a serious medical problem that is likely to shorten your life is another reason to start your benefits sooner rather than later. Consider the “breakeven point”: This is the age you need to reach to come out ahead by waiting to claim Social Security. Is 78 for someone who claims at 62 versus waiting to 66? If, for whatever reason, you don’t anticipate making it to 78, go ahead and claim early.

Hitchcock Chairs are a Great Pair
We have a pair the Hitchcock chairs, and I have enclosed a photo of one of them. They are old, in great condition and have the original finish. There are stencils on the back. Marked under the seats are the words “L. Hitchcock -Hitchcocksville, Conn. -- Warranted -- R.” The N’s are all written backwards and the R is inside a circle. We would appreciate information about the age and approximate value of our chairs.

Lambert Hitchcock founded his hand stenciled furniture factory in 1818 in Hitchcocksville, Conn. His chairs were so affordable and popular that they became mass-produced. Hitchcock was an amazing innovator, but he lacked business skills. The company went into receivership in 1832. A r o u n d 1946, John Kenney came across the abandoned factory while fishing in the nearby river. He bought the property and began producing chairs in the same location until 2006. In 2010, Rick Swenson and Gary Hath purchased the Hitchcock name and Lambert Hitchcock made designs. Their facfurniture that was affordable tory is in Riverton and popular. ‘Nova Over Nova Lox Route 70 in Burlington County, New Jersey (“Old Marlton Pike” according to your car’s GPS) features a particularly grueling, pockmarked stretch of road right through the heart of a wellto-do Philadelphia bedroom community called Cherry Hill. Framed on either side by bright orange construction cones, it is kept illuminated 24/7 by flashing lights from parked state troopers’ patrol cars. The troopers look on in approval as an army of construction workers transform the center median from a bucolic, cherry blossom and grasscovered median into a Martianesque hellscape of paint-gouging gravel. The weather has been nice all winter, and on this day -- game day -- as drivers gather up the courage to engage in the Beyond Thunderdome-like experience that merging onto the interstate has become, all windows are down and the radios are on. It doesn’t matter where you are on the radio dial because every station is playing the same tune: They’re talking about the Villanova Wildcats. At Cherry Hill Pizza, a full regiment of delivery drivers stand in wait. The orders are coming in and they expect a run at about 9 p.m., 20 minutes before the tipoff against North Carolina. A few weeks earlier, one of the drivers had an epiphany: “You guys ... Villanova is, like, the only good team in Philadelphia right now.” Soon after, it seemed like the take-out customers went from wearing Penn State garb to Wildcat tees. Bumper stickers with the blue emblazoned “V” seemed to multiply. Although Temple, St. Joe’s and Drexel made their tournament runs, the town is mired in a rather bleak rut of late. The Philadelphia Experiment that was the Chip Kelly regime has left the Eagles in complete disarray. The Flyers can’t win a shootout and are in danger of being eliminated from the playoffs. The Phillies are expected to finish below .500, and the 76ers are a train wreck. Through it all, Villanova stood apart. Counted out virtually all season until they finally punched through and held the No. 1 ranking for a time, ‘Nova reminded everyone of why they love the multi-tiered sports scene of the town. Philadelphia basketball is an institution, and no institution has garnered more love over the years than Villanova. In 1985, Villanova played the “perfect game” in beating Georgetown for the title; this year Villanova had the secondbest shooting performance in Final Four history, second only to that ‘85 squad, and their average margin of victory in the tournament was surpassed only by the 1996 Kentucky team. Still, people weren’t sure that Jay Wright, in his 15th season as head coach, had what it would take toANSWERS beat North Carolina. None of the people at The Kibbitz Room over on Springdale could imagine that the next morning, over nova lox and bagels, they would be passing newspapers and recounting what was surely the best basketball game they had ever witnessed. “Kris Jenkins” and “Archie Diacono” (Ryan Arcidiacono, the tournament’s outstanding player) schmeared right in with “Curry” and “Laettner” in conversation. Yet, there they were, local rush-hour traffic be damned. ‘Nova over nova, highlights over pizza, and Jenkins over North Carolina. Suddenly, everything was sunny in the Philadelphia suburbs. Villanova delivered. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.
