In 1918 the average American used about half a pound of various spices to flavor their food in a single year. • The average human tongue has about 10,000 taste buds. Years ago you may have seen diagrams that mapped out the different areas of the tongue that are responsible for tasting all sorts of things, whether salty, sweet, bitter and so forth. However, this map of the human tongue has since been disproved. Every taste bud on the tongue is individually equipped with five different receptors, each of which is capable of detecting all five of the basic tastes. Here are the facts: • The five basic tastes we perceive are sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and ‘unami,’ a Japanese word meaning savory or meaty.

Kanzi’s handler was surprised when Kanzi began using sign language after viewing the videos in spite of the fact that sign language had not been part of the curriculum. • An ape named Chantek was learning sign language when his handler gave him a bunch of grapes and signed that she wanted him to share them with her. Chantek ate all the grapes, and handed the empty stem back to the handler.

• Next, the researchers studied the grunts the vervets made when meeting other members of the group. They found the grunt a vervet makes when meeting a socially superior monkey is different from the grunt it makes when meeting an inferior. There is a different grunt altogether for a monkey from a different tribe. Researchers also isolated the grunt that means a monkey is moving into an open area.
• Koko, a gorilla taught sign language, learned 645 signs by the time she was seven years old and now knows over 1,000 signs. She can also understand about 2,000 words of spoken language. Like Washoe, Koko is also capable of making up her own signs for things she doesn't know the word for. She made the signs for “finger” and “bracelet” indicating a ring.

Flavors (from page one) see on your tongue are called papillae, and the tiny taste buds rest on top of these projections. A TASTE DISCOVERY
• A 1930 accident in a chemical laboratory led to a surprising discovery about differences in taste perception. A technician was experimenting with the formula for a blue dye in a lab owned by the DuPont Chemical Company. As he was pouring a container of white powder into a test tube, he fumbled and the chemical powder puffed into the air. He unintentionally inhaled some of the powder, as did the second tech standing next to him. He was surprised when the second tech immediately began to choke and gag because the powder was so bitter. The first tech had neither tasted nor smelled any odor at all.

• Chemical flavorings are even added to livestock feeds to encourage animals to eat more so they gain weight faster and turn a higher profit. Even when given nothing but straw to eat, livestock will eat more of it and gain weight faster if the straw has been treated with various artificial flavors, making it taste like rye grass or clover. • These are the same sorts of artificial flavorings used in human food as well. A child might not want to drink a glass of water mixed only with sugar, but add some coloring and artificial flavorings to make it taste fruity and watch them guzzle it down!

AN ARTIFICIAL FLAVORING BOOM
• In the years between 1949 and 1959, chemists invented over 400 additives to help preserve and process food. Today over 2,200 such additives are in use. In fact, it has been estimated that every person in America eats about two pounds of chemically produced flavorings every year.

SPICY FACTS ABOUT
Hot
Peppers • Columbus was looking for a shorter route to the black pepper supply of India when he discovered the New World. Because he was so desperate to find pepper, everything that he came across which had a hot taste was dubbed ‘pepper.’ That’s why today we have green peppers and chili peppers. These are fruits rather than berries, and their ‘hot’ taste is caused by a chemical called capsaicin. Capsaicin isn’t really a taste; it’s a pain. Capsaicin stimulates the pain-sensing neurons inside the mouth. • There are 30 species of pepper plants and all belong to the genus Capsicum, which comes from the Greek ‘kapto’ meaning bite or gulp. • The Scoville test for measuring the amount of heat in a hot pepper was developed by Wilbur Scoville. He was working for a pharmaceutical company, trying to make different uses out of plant alkaloids including capsaicin. A rating of 1 million Scoville units means that the extract from that plant must be diluted to a concentration of 1 part per million before its heat dissipates.

This seventh season of “Rizzoli and Isles” is indeed the crime-solving duos’ last hurrah. TNT’s hit comedy-drama returns with its final 13 episodes on Monday, June 6, at 9/8c. I also have the premiere dates for the rest of TNT’s blockbuster summer series. Premiering June 7 is a new series called “Animal Kingdom,” which stars Ellen Barkin. The series centers on 17-year-old Joshua Cody (played by Finn Cole), who moves in with his freewheeling relatives in their Southern California beach town after his mother dies of a heroin overdose. The family is headed by Janine Cody (played by Ellen) and her right-hand man Baz (played by Scott Speedman), who runs the business and calls the shots. Josh realizes that joining the family comes with more danger than he might be ready to handle. Come back next week, and I’ll give you all

Dogs and Seniors “I bought my mom a Yorkie for her birthday.” “Yorkie, huh? Cute breed. How old is your mom?” “She’s 92.” And so began the story that, all told, included four trips to the hospital in five months for Mom, as she repeatedly tripped over, tangled with and stepped on her rambunctious gift. Happy birthday! The potential benefits to pairing the elderly with pets are immeasurable, but clearly there are risks to consider. Large dogs can knock a frail person to the ground. Hyperactive or herding breeds require a lot of exercise and attention. Longhaired dogs tend to shed more, creating extra housework and requiring frequent grooming. Many purebreds and older dogs have health problems of their own, meaning frequent trips to the vet, medication and special care. Basically, any dog can be a handful in the wrong hands. Or, as in the case of the birthday girl, under the wrong feet. Small dogs tend to get underfoot. Remember Paula Abdul? Made famous by her talent as a dancer, Abdul lost her balance and fell on her face trying to avoid stepping on her Chihuahua. Toy dogs send their senior owners to the emergency room with broken hips, broken arms, broken legs… And a broken bone can lead to major complications for an elderly person -- physical, psychological and financial complications that can take a lasting toll on the individual’s quality of life. This is why training and foresight are essential. Foresight means you’ve considered the risks outlined above and reached the decision that you are able to successfully navigate them. In giving the gift of a dog to an elderly person, foresight means asking hard questions: -- Will the dog outlive the person? Most dogs live about 15 years. If the recipient is 92, who will take care of the dog once that person is gone? A shelter should not be the answer. -- Can the recipient take care of the dog? CASEY’S CORNER: Turn to page 10

SENIOR NEWS LINE by Matilda Charles © King Features Synd., Inc.
Social Security Strategies Change Starting in May 2016, there are some changes to Social Security that will eliminate strategies seniors have used to maximize benefits. Unlike what some doom-mongers have said, Social Security isn’t going away, our benefits aren’t being cut ... there’s nothing radical going on here. Tucked into the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015 was language that covers three strategies many of us have used in collecting Social Security: 1) File and suspend: In this strategy, the full retirement-age spouse (age 66 for those born between 1943 and 1954) filed for benefits and then immediately suspended them. The other spouse then claimed spousal benefits while the initial benefits accrued for years at an 8 percent annual increase. No more. Now if one spouse files, he or she must take those benefits or the other spouse can’t claim spousal benefits.
2) Restricted application: In this strategy, the retirement-age spouse filed for spousal benefits, but didn’t collect his or her own benefits, letting the personal benefits sit for years and accrue. Per the new rules, you can claim one or the other, spousal or personal benefits, but not both. You get the larger of the two, with no changing back and forth, and no deferring benefits until age 70. 3) Suspended benefits -- In this strategy, the recipient filed and then immediately suspended payments. If these benefits were suddenly needed down the road, he or she could collect them in a lump sum, but not at the higher monthly rate that the extra time would have afforded. Per the new rules, there will be no lump-sum payment. Monthly payment will be made at a higher rate. If your future retirement plans included any of the above strategies, consult with your financial adviser about alternative options. * * * Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. CASEY’S CORNER (from page 9) Walk the dog? Remember to feed and water the dog? If not, who will? -- Can the person drive the dog to the vet and take charge of any medical needs that arise? If not, who will? -- Does the person want the responsibility of a dog? After all, the point of a gift is to bring joy, not stress, to the life of another. After foresight comes training. Training prevents accidents -- for the person and the pooch. No dog enjoys being run over by a wheelchair. And a dog properly trained to sit and stay will not only be out of harm’s way, but will be the kind of calm, reassuring presence from which an elderly person might benefit. And the benefits are many and not to be overlooked: companionship, protection, the establishment of a daily routine, the great feeling of having a purpose and being needed, not to mention the physical benefits of exercise, playfulness, the smile a dog brings to the face and the relaxation induced by stroking his fur. But before you give the gift of canine companionship, make sure the hard questions are asked and answered. And don’t underestimate the need -and value -- of professional training. After suggesting to her well-meaning son that it makes no sense to give a 92-year-old woman an untrained puppy, he indignantly replied, “Who has the money for professional dog training?” Answer me this: Who has the money for four hospital stays in almost as many months? Woof! * * * Dog trainer Matthew “Uncle Matty” Margolis is co-author of 18 books about dogs, a behaviorist, a popular radio and television guest, and host of the PBS series “WOOF! It’s a Dog’s Life!”

will get back to the good old-fashioned and relatively simple Social Security program. But that’s a good news/bad news scenario. These loophole laws were messy, but they did result in more money for seniors in the long run. Once those loopholes close, the system will be simple again, but less generous.

I made a little promise to myself that I would NOT write another column about all the confusion over the much ballyhooed and mostly misunderstood Social Security maximizing strategies called “file and suspend” and “file and restrict.” At least not for the next couple of weeks. I would guess that more than half of my columns over the past several months have focused on this one topic alone, including my last three columns in a row. So if you are looking for information on that topic, just My 97-year-old mother just died. go to your newspaper’s online archives at, www. I’ve explained many times before that as a retired Social Security Administration employee, I know all about Social Security benefits, but very little about the Medicare program. SSA’s role in the Medicare program is minimal: They simply help people sign up for Medicare coverage. But an entirely different government agency, called the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, actually runs the Medicare program. You can call them at 800-MEDICARE. A half-century ago, $255 really helped pay for the funeral. Today, it won’t even buy the flowers. Bills are occasionally introduced in Congress to eliminate the almost worthless benefit. But then senior citizen lobby groups rally the troops and fight to keep it on the books. So it never goes away, but it never goes up either. For example, back in the 1980s, the Reagan administration was looking for ways to cut government spending. And the Social Security death benefit was on the chopping block. Congress (with the encouragement of the senior citizen lobby) fought back. They compromised, and decided to limit the payment only to a spouse or a minor child. Because your mom was a widow (i.e., she had no spouse), and assuming you are not a minor child, that’s why you didn’t get the death benefit. If I were the king of the Social Security world, I would increase the rate to $2,500. And if Congress says the money isn’t there to do that, then I would simply eliminate it. *** D.C.C.S. - Enrollment If have aFREEBIE Social Security question, Tom 1/6 Pg. 4Cyou TOTAL

How to Downsize Your Stuff for a Move Dear Savvy Senior: Can you offer any helpful tips for downsizing? My husband and I are interested in moving to a condo in a retirement community when we retire next year, but we know we need to get rid of a lot of our personal possessions before we can move. The condo will be quite a bit smaller than our home. We’ve lived here for almost 35 years and have accumulated tons of stuff. -- Feeling Overwhelmed Dear Overwhelmed: The process of weeding through a house full of stuff and parting with old possessions can be difficult and overwhelming for many people. A good place to start the downsizing process is to give your unused possessions away to your kids or grandkids. You can give up to $14,000 per person per year before you’re required to file a federal gift tax return, using IRS Form 709. Beyond that, here are a few other tips and services that may help you. Sell It: Selling your stuff is one way you can downsize and pad your pocketbook at the same time. Some other popular selling options are consignment shops, garage sales and estate sales. Consignment shops are good for selling clothing, household furnishings and decorative items. You typically get half of the final sale price. Garage sales are another option, or for largescale downsizing you could hire an estate sale company to come in and sell your items onsite at your home. Some companies will even pick up your stuff and sell it at their own location – they typically take about 40 percent of the profits. Or, if you’re willing, online selling at sites like Craigslist, eBay and Amazon are another way to make top dollar for your stuff. Craigslist. org is a huge classified ads site that lets you sell your stuff for free. While eBay.com and Amazon.com takes a cut of your sale – roughly 10 to 15 percent. Or, if you don’t want to do the selling yourself, eBay offers a valet service (sellforme. ebay.com) to do it for you, for 20 to 40 percent of the selling price. Donate It: If you itemize on your tax returns, donating your belongings is another way to downsize and get a tax deduction. Goodwill (goodwill.org, 800-741-0186) and the Salvation Army (satruck.org, 800-728-7825) are two big charitable organizations that will come to your house and pick up a variety of household items, furnishings and clothing. If your deduction exceeds $500, you’ll need to file Form 8283, “Noncash Charitable Contributions” (irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f8283.pdf). You’ll also need a receipt from the organization for every batch of items you donate, and will need to create an itemized list of the items you donated. To calculate fair market value for your stuff, use the Salvation Army’s donation guide at satruck.org/home/donationvalueguide, or the free program “It’s Deductible” at turbotax.intuit. com/personal-taxes/itsdeductible. Trash It: If you have a lot of junk you want to get rid of, contact your municipal trash service to see if they provide bulk curbside pickup services. Or, depending on where you live,
you could hire a company like 1-800-Got-Junk (1800gotjunk.com, 800-468-5865) or Junk-King (junk-king.com, 888-888-5865) to come in and haul it off for a moderate fee. Another good disposal option is Bagster (thebagster.com, 877-789-2247) by Waste Management. This is a dumpster bag that you purchase for around $30, fill it to a limit of 3,300 pounds and schedule a pickup, which costs an average of $140 but varies by area. Enlist Help: You can also hire a professional senior move manager (nasmm.org, 877-606-2766) to do the entire job for you. These are organizers who will sort through your stuff and arrange for the disposal through an estate sale, donations or consignment. Or, you can hire a professional organizer through the National Association of Professional Organizers at napo. net. Organizers may charge $30 to $80 per hour or by the project. *** Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. VETERANS POST by Freddy Groves
Scheduling Problems Are Legion at VA I’ve been rooting for little White River Junction, Vermont. Back when I first started watching the Department of Veterans Affairs medical center there, White River Junction had its hands full with claims overload. Sure, its numbers weren’t as bad as places like St. Petersburg, Florida, where 46,366 veterans waited an average 207 days for claims to be completed. For White River Junction to have 969 veterans waiting an average 239 days didn’t seem so bad. The VA Office of the Inspector General paid a call on the facility, as it is doing across the country after all the problems with appointmentscheduling scams exposed in Phoenix. Inspectors interviewed 40 people and reviewed 700,000 records in White River Junction, and the results aren’t pretty: * Half of schedulers entered the appointment date as the patient’s desired date 100 percent of the time. Others did that most of the time, making it look like appointments were made within required time frames. * To keep from exceeding the 14-day appointment requirement, the mental health unit just sent new patients to its walk-in clinic so they could be seen that day. * Schedulers in multiple departments were putting information in paper folders to be entered later when appointments came available. That way patients could be scheduled within the 14-day window to make the stats look good. The electronic wait list (computerized scheduling) hadn’t been used in 8-10 years. * At one point, 700 consultations had not been scheduled. When upper management learned of the backlog, the appointments were put in the computer system, with overbooking “up to four times clinic capacity.” In one specialty clinic, appointment times were cut to 15-20 minutes to fit in as many patients as possible -- to the detriment of veterans’ health when serious illnesses weren’t discovered. I’m disappointed. ***

Finding a Buyer Can be Difficult Q:
Enclosed is a photo of my one place setting of my lovely china dishes. The set was purchased in 1950 the year we were married. At the time, we paid $1,289.00 for a complete ser vice for fourteen, plus several ser ving pieces. My husband is in a nursing home and we no longer need the set. We have no family left and I would like to sell it. Marked on the back of each dish are the words “Rosenthal -- Germany -- Aida.” The pattern is “Pine Needles.” The set is in perfect condition and like new. I would like to sell the set for $250 or best offer. I hope you can provide me with any information on how to find a buyer or how to sell my china.
I have a set of wooden “Dragon Dominoes” that was made in 1970 by Milton Bradley Company and have enclosed the mark that is on the box. Also on the box are the words “Double Twelve -- 91 Pieces- Ages 7 to Adult -- Springfield -- Massachusetts -- 4133 -Made in USA.” There is a sticker that says the game sold for $.95 at Lugbill Supply Center, Archbold, Ohio. The box and the dominoes are in good condition. Is there any value in my set of dominoes? Any comments will be appreciated.
“Dragon Dominoes” was made by the Milton Bradley toy company in 1970.
A:
Milton Bradley Company was founded in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1860. They experienced huge success producing board games. One of their first was “The Checkered Game of Life” and by 1861 they had made 45,000. Along with board games, they also made croquet sets, and the electronic games “Simon” and “Microvision.” Halsam was a toy manufacturer that was purchased in 1962 by Playskool. In 1967, Milton Bradley purchased Playskool. Hasbro bought Milton Bradley in 1984. If your Dominoes set has all the pieces and is in very good condition, it would probably be worth $25 to $35.

Selling vintage dishes such as porcelain dinnerware can be a difficult challenge.
A:
It can be very difficult to sell a set of vintage porcelain dinnerware. You might check with an antiques dealer and see they would be interested. There are several businesses that buy and re-sell pre-owned porcelain dishes and glassware. They market vintage, current and discontinued dishes to those who want to buy replacements or complete sets. The replacement or matching busi-

Spieth No Evil This is a story about “The Good Ones,” the greatest team you’ve never heard of. And you can’t be blamed for that, since The Good Ones flew under the radar and only played intramural softball at the University of Maryland. The team played great ball, and if the magnificent-looking captain, a former freshman ballplayer with an alleged .314 career average, hadn’t been injured in a freak fall down the basement stairs orchestrated by his cat, they probably would have taken home the trophy. The rest of the team was rounded out by other luminaries, including a few superstar Terp football players, ACC champion wrestlers and club hockey players. And as hard as it is to believe, this shabbily dressed group of athletic ragamuffins also featured Kevin Plank at first base. Plank, some of you stockholders, sports junkies and financial-publication readers may know, is the founder and CEO of sportswear giant Under Armour. One now surmises that The Good Ones would be a very well-attired team should they ever reform for an old-timers’ game. So this team used to actually draw a bit of a crowd, even if most of the fans were their girlfriends. Maybe that’s why the aforementioned captain of the team tried to argue a call in his last game. Maybe he felt he had to show some tenacity. OK, so the captain was me. This has been bugging me for a long time. Hang with me, here. I was thrown out at second but was safe by a Maryland mile. I tried to argue the call, but my body didn’t play ball. My headfirst slide looked more like a sputter into a gutter that knocked the wind out of me, and when I yelled at the ump, it sounded like I was having a seizure. I got kicked out of the game and came off like a bad sport, which I was. Fast-forward to 2016. Golfer Jordan Spieth is the same age as I was when I got booted from that softball game. And wouldn’t you just know it? He is sponsored by Under Armour, so I feel a certain kinship. Not just because of the apparel angle, but the loss of cool. A friend once told me that “He who loses their cool first, loses.” As we now know, young Master Spieth quadruple bogied at The Masters, and the naysayers are gunning for him like a mosquito at sunset. “He didn’t shake his hand”; “He never congratulated him”; “He told the cameras to step off”; and blah, blah, blah. Some have even said this loss will somehow hurt Under Armour, as some Wall Street pundits downgraded the stock. WhileANSWERS I never returned to the field, you can bet that Jordan Spieth will be back. He’s 22, and he had a bad hole. If he merely bogied on No. 12, he’d have won his second Masters. No matter what anyone tweets or memes about the kid, no matter what they’ve heard, trust me ... Spieth is no evil villain here. Put it in context, like my slide into second, to understand I guess you just had to be there. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.
