Beetles are the largest genus of insect on the planet, accounting for one-third of all insect species. In fact, one out of every four species on Earth, both plant and animal, is a beetle. And with over 350,000 types known to exist, biologists are still discovering new species each year. Repulsed by them or not, these prolific creatures are all around us everywhere, so Tidbits thought we might as well learn a few things about them. Read on and see what we found. BEETLE ETYMOLOGY

• The Old English word ‘bitula’ meaning ‘little biter’ gave us the word ‘beetle.’The word ‘weevil’ (a genus of long-snouted beetles) comes from the German ‘webila’ meaning ‘swarming.’ The scientific name for the order of beetles is Coleoptera, from the Greek word ‘koleon’ meaning a sheath, and ‘pteron’ meaning wing. Beetles have two sets of wings. The top set is hard and is used as protection, forming a kind of shell over the bottom set of wings, which are delicate and used for flying. SPECIALTY BEETLES

• The click beetle has a special protection against being flipped on its back, which leaves most other beetles helpless. It has a built-in springboard inside its body and will flip it with such force that it launches itself several inches into the air with a Beetles: Turn to page 3

• A researcher at the University of Michigan taught a rat to jump at cards placed on a high platform. The card with a white circle would always fall aside when the rat bumped it, allowing the rat access to the food compartment. But the black-circled card was rigid, tripping a trap door that sent the rat falling into a net below. The rat learned to jump at the white circled card quite quickly. But then the researcher abruptly changed the rules: now the food was placed alternately behind the white card, then the black card. The rat was totally frustrated and unable to learn the new rule. After a few mistakes, it refused to jump at all unless forced. Even when the scientist showed the rat the food behind the black card, it still continued to jump for the white. The rat quickly developed a neurosis.

• A researcher raised two groups of rats. Beetles: (from page one) loud snap. Ideally the beetle lands right-side-up, but if not, it keeps on springing till it gets it right. • In Papua New Guinea there are about 20 different species of weevil that walk around with their own personal garden growing on their backs. Lichens, mosses, algae, and fungi attach themselves to the backs of these beetles, while various kinds of mites, lice, and tiny worms live on the lichens. Up to 19 species of plant may inhabit a single insect. Its little garden also serves as good camouflage. • One very small type of beetle emits chemical odors that smell exactly like an ant. Living in ant colonies, this beetle walks around snatching free food from worker ants. Other types of tiny beetles attach themselves to the hair of mice and rats and spend their lives feeding on the fleas, mites, and lice that infest the rodents. • Desert-dwelling beetles have extremely long legs that function as stilts, raising the beetle’s body off the heat of the desert floor. One type of desert beetle has a built-in pouch that carries a supply of water under the shell of its wings. • The fastest-running insect known is a type of tiger beetle of Australia. It is so well equipped for running that its wings are basically nonfunctional and can’t fly. This speedy beetle can run about 1.5 miles per hour, covering more than two feet of ground per second. If translated to human dimensions, this remarkable bug zaps along at about 720 mph proportionate to its size!

• The whirligig beetle lives on the surface of the water. Its eyes are partitioned in half so that the top sees above the surface while the lower half sees below. It waits to sense vibrations that tell it a helpless insect has fallen into the water. It quickly attacks the floundering bug, then settles in for din-din.

It’s compact, sleek and lightweight, it has a full-sized keyboard and it doubles as a tablet. I carry it with me so I can keep up with emails. It’s perfect for browsing the internet, creating documents, taking notes and even playing a game or two -- or ten. Those are the things Chromebooks really excel at. Combine the practicality with the cheap price, and it’s no wonder Chromebooks have beADVERTISING PROOF come so popular.

• The insects were placed on an infected tree under a tent and allowed to feed and reproduce. Soon the tree showed no signs of the scale and began to regain its health. The tent was then removed and the beetles were allowed to spread, becoming the first insect species to be deliberately introduced to North America for the purpose of biological control.

LADYBUG FACTS

• Worldwide, there are about 4,500 different species of ladybugs. Of those, about 400 kinds are found in North America, including the type imported from Australia. • Ladybugs are also beloved by gardeners because they eat aphids, devouring as many as 5,000 during the course of their lifetime. Ladybugs can eat up to 75 aphids in a single day. • It takes about 3,000 ladybugs to protect one acre of orange trees. • Ladybugs were named after the Virgin Mary and were once called “the beetles of Our Lady.” This originated centuries ago when insects were ravaging crops and the peasant farmers called out to God for help. Suddenly, ladybugs began to appear and their crops were saved. • Not only are they called ladybugs in our language, but in various other languages as well. In Scandinavia, they’re called ‘cyckelpiga’ meaning ‘Our Lady’s key-maid,’ and in France they’re known as ‘betes de la Vierge,’ translated ‘animals of the Virgin.’ Ladybugs are also called lady beetles or, in Europe, ladybird beetles. • In England, the ladybugs live on hops vines, which are burned at the end of each season. Not wanting the beneficial bugs to perish, a rhyme was made up to warn them away: “Ladybug,

• More shipments of the insect followed, and it took only two years and $1,500 worth of the bugs to bring the scale infestation under control. • Soon the bug had spread nationwide, becoming America’s most beloved insect. Today the bright red insect is a favorite of children, and many people consider it good luck to have one of these flying beetles land on them. What is the name of the beetle that saved the citrus groves? It's the Coccinellidae -- better known as the ladybug.

If you want something to be successful, you have to appeal to a broad audience, and you won’t find a broader audience than exploring the particular foods that people love in every state.” *** I’ve watched ever y episode of “Bates Motel,” and although I figured Norma (Vera Farmiga) would be killed by Norman, I still don’t want it to end. Can’t the writers continue this thriller by making Norman take over Norma’s character as well as his psychotic personality, and thrill the viewers for a few more seasons? -- Jo C., via email

ity retirement benefit, which is what it really is.

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

Social Security Disability Is NOT Welfare Q:

I am 60 years old and have had to stop work because of various medical problems. I would like to apply for Social Security disability benefits. But my husband and I have a retirement nest egg worth about $250,000, so I guess we are not eligible. Do I just wait until I am 62 to sign up for retirement benefits?

A:

I am constantly amazed by the number of people, yourself apparently included, who equate the Social Security disability program with welfare. It is not. You can be rich or poor and qualify for Social Security retirement. And you can be rich or poor and qualify for Social Security disability. If Bill Gates became disabled tomorrow, he could file for Social Security disability benefits. And so can you. Maybe it would help if you think of the Social Security disability program as an early disabil-

Q:

My 59-year-old wife recently became disabled. I called Social Security’s 800 number to ask about getting her on SSI, but they said because of my income that she isn’t eligible. (I work, so we have my salar y and I also get a militar y retirement pension.) But my wife worked all her life. So why can’t she get disability now?

A:

I purposely put your question after the prior one to further help clear up confusion many people have about disability benefits -- in this case, about two entirely separate government disability programs. If you used the same terminology with Social Security’s call center people as you did in your question to me, then I understand why you got the answer you did. You said you asked about getting your wife “on SSI.” SSI is short for Supplemental Security Income. That is a federal welfare program that pays a small monthly stipend to poor people who are 65 or older or who are disabled. The Social Security Administration manages the SSI program for the federal government. And this leads to all kinds of confusion because so many people think that SSI is some kind of Social Security benefit. It is NOT. Also, many other people think that SSI is the same thing as Social Security disability. Again, it is not. Supplemental Security Income is for poor people. To repeat, it makes monthly payments to low-income senior citizens and to poor people who have disabilities. Social Security is for anyone (rich or poor) who has worked and paid Social Security taxes. Social Security retirement is for folks 62 or older. Social Security disability goes to people under 65 who are unable to work because of a physical or mental impairment. So you should call the Social Security people back and this time tell them that you want information that will help your wife file for Social Security disability, not SSI.

Q:

I worked for 35 years. I had to quit about six years ago because of a painful back injur y. I have been living off of my employer’s disability payments for much of that time. I am about to turn 62. I called Social Security’s 800 number to ask about my potential benefits. They told me it was too late to get disability. Is it really too late to get my disability? What about my retirement?

A:

There is no disqualifying time period when it comes to applying for Social Security retirement benefits. So you certainly can do that now. On the other hand, there is a law that says

AFFORDABLE ADVERTISNG RESULTS

(760) 320-0997

Page 11

you must have worked and paid Social Security taxes in five out of the last 10 years to qualify for Social Security disability benefits. But that rule means you must have those five years of work in the 10-year period before you became disabled, not necessarily the 10-year period before you file a Social Security disability claim. So here is what you should do. You should file for retirement benefits. But at the same time, you should file for Social Security disability benefits claiming your disability began six years ago (a point in time when you met the “five out of the last 10” rule). They will begin to pay your retirement benefits immediately. Then they will process your disability claim. And assuming you have medical records going back six years and can prove you became disabled at that point, and further assuming your disability claim is approved, they would then switch you to the higher Social Security disability rate. (As a general rule, a disability benefit equals an age 66 full retirement rate.) And depending on circumstances I don’t know about your case, they could possibly pay you retroactive disability benefits.

Q:

I don’t understand the so-called “waiting period” for Social Security disability benefits. Some people say it is five months. Others say it is six months. Also, why is there a waiting period in the first place?

A:

The law says that Social Security disability benefits cannot be paid for the first five full calendar months that a person is disabled. For example, let’s say that you became disabled on May 15, 2016 and that you filed for Social Security disability benefits shortly thereafter and your claim was approved. So June through October would be the first five full months of your disability, meaning the first disability check you would get would be for November. I usually am pretty good at giving the rationale behind various Social Security laws and regulations. But the disability waiting period is one rule that has always left me a bit in the dark. The best explanation I’ve heard is that most people should qualify for other forms of assistance right after they become disabled, like worker’s compensation payments or benefits through their employer’s disability plan. So they don’t really need Social Security disability benefits until five or six months down the road. *** If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has the answer. VETERANS  POST 

now, I just thought that breastfeeding was the best I could do for my baby. But if that’s true, then why would the DHHS or hospitals be against breastfeeding? -- S.G. ANSWER: There is no doubt that breastfeeding is best for your baby. Breastfed babies have lower risk of becoming overweight and of many illnesses. The science is absolutely clear.

M.D.

If Walking Hurts, Try Water Exercise DEAR DR. ROACH: I just wanted to touch base with you about my diabetes. While my weight has stayed stable around 320 pounds, my sugar numbers have been increasingly hard to keep in line. I’ve maxed out on the oral medications we use. My latest A1c was 6.6. The doctor says it should be under 6 and that our next step is insulin. He asked me to try to lose 50 pounds over the next six months in order to get my sugar back under control. I agree and want it to happen. I’m counting calories and cutting out carbs, and have started walking in the morning. I know I can’t run, with no discs in my bottom three vertebrae. But even walking is hard. I walk until my leg goes numb, but I don’t think it will be enough, and I may not even be able to keep that up. Even walking easy makes my hip hurt and leg go numb after about 20 minutes. -- S.A.

I read the letter I think you are referring to, and it seems to me that it is pointing out that some hospitals don’t do as good a job as they could in helping educate new mothers about why and how to breastfeed. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, without hospital support, one in three mothers stops breastfeeding. Only about 5 percent of babies are born in U.S. hospitals that are designated “babyfriendly.” I support initiatives that help promote breastfeeding in hospitals, and hope the DHHS gives its support as well. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. ANSWER: I am surprised by your doctor’s advice, because it’s very clear now (from the ACCORD study) that an A1c (a measure of average sugar levels) of 7 percent has lower overall risks than an A1c of 6 percent for someone like you. Exercise is always good, and my first thought is water. Getting in a pool will take pressure off your back, and you should be able to swim, walk in the water or do water-exercise classes to your heart’s content. *** Readers: Start reaping the benefits of exercise the moment you begin. Good News on PTSD A clinical trial has shown that the addition of just one care component can improve outcomes for those with PTSD. The component was specially trained care managers and telephone therapy. After one year, those who had telephonebased therapy saw significant improvements in recovery, compared with those who didn’t have the teletherapy. The telephone therapy aspect was seen as a way to get around the stigma of showing up to see a mental-health specialist. The specially trained care managers were key, too, and served to coordinate between the patient and the overall care team. The non-profit research organization RAND Corporation, in collaboration with the Department of Defense and two universities, began the study back in 2012. More than 600 military personnel at various bases were divided into two programs. One group got the standard care: screening for PTSD and depression. Nurses would call monthly to ask about symptoms. The other group got the upgraded care: In addition to the above, the nurses were specially trained, and psychologists would make the telephone calls to do therapy, as well as offer face-toface meetings. Psychologists, psychiatrists and care managers would review the information on a weekly basis and suggest changes if necessary. The bonus is that the telephone therapy likely will get more people to seek care sooner, reducing the time to begin treatment. It’s thought that between 13 percent and 18 percent of active military or veterans suffer from PTSD, depression or anxiety after they’ve been deployed. Only half of those receive mentalhealth services. The clinical trial isn’t currently taking on new participants. Still, if you want to read the particulars, go online to clinicaltrials.gov/show/ NCT01492348. If you’re interested, it wouldn’t hurt to talk to your care provider about it. The contact info for medical personnel is at the bottom of the webpage. * * *

Before he passed away he gave us the chairs and told us they are ver y valuable. We offered them to our newly built local museum, but the curator was not interested. The chairs are in perfect condition, and the cushions are covered with needlepoint. Each chair cushion has a paper label with Side chairs were made circa the words “Do 1840. Not Remove This Tag Under Penalty of Law.” Could you give us any information about the chairs?

A:

Your dinnerware was made by a porcelain factory founded by the Morimura brothers in Japan. They had offices in New York and imported porcelain dinnerware to the United States. This is a set of bone china. Bone china was made by mixing cow bones with feldspar, clay, quartz and kaolin. Pieces of bone china are fired at a lower heat than porcelain, giving them a brighter white, translucent appearance when held up to the light. Your set was made in the early 1900s and its insurance value would probably be $200 to $400. *** Address your questions to Anne McCollam, P.O. Box 247, Notre Dame, IN 46556. You don’t get the opportunity very often, witnessing pure unadulterated excellence, so when the moment comes you don’t ever forget what took place. For LeBron James, that moment was Game Seven of the NBA Finals, and the place was Oakland. The business world likes to use sports analogies. Easy deals are referred to as “slam dunks,” ambitiousness is measured by “goals,” wins are “home runs” and losses are “knockouts.” Rare are the times that sports teams use business analogies. Nobody calls a player a “pencil pusher” or a “bean counter,” there are no “working stiffs” or “executive vice presidents.” In basketball, you are assigned nicknames like “Air,” “Magic” and “King.” They’re in the business of delivering championships. As far as business decisions go, LeBron’s decision to skip college paid off. His decision to leave Cleveland for Miami paid off in the form of dual championships. The decision to broadcast his decision live on ESPN, a narcissistic misstep that humiliated his hometown, severely damaged his “brand.” I wouldn’t say I was a hater, but “The Decision” tipped the scale for me ... LeBron was a bad guy in terms of the storyline. No more. After almost singlehandedly beating the Warriors in one of the greatest finals through sheer force of will, he is the hero at the end of the book. James’ performance, particularly in Game Seven, where he totally took control of the final minutes of play, was astounding. Numbers don’t tell the whole story, can’t tell the whole story. What reads on the stat sheet as a block was actually a story about a guy who kept on running back, catching up in time to take to the air and smash a sure bucket into the backboard to preserve the tie. What the stat sheet lists as one free throw was actually the story of a giant of a man, rolling in utter pain on the hardwood for several minutes before rising for the last minute of the game.

You have side chairs that were made around 1840. The style reflects the transition between the Empire period and the early Victorian period. The carved crest rail, the finger grip, the vase-shaped splat back, the serpentine seat and the reverse ogee-shape front legs are common Victorian design characteristics. The seats are slip seats; they can be easily removed from the frame. The label you describe is a warning label. Those were first used in the early 1900s so consumers knew what materials were in upholstery, pillows and mattresses. Having said that, the needlepoint is not original to the chairs; it was replaced some time in the 1900s. As a rule, most side chairs made in the early to mid-1800s were made of ma-

There are some great postscripts, too. Rihanna trolling Stephen Curry on Twitter was an interesting novelty. The series also gave us a few stunning renditions of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” most notably Carlos Santana’s version and the Cleveland sing-a-long. It also showcased Oakland in a very favorable light, something that has been way overdue. Oakland and Berkeley are two overlooked cities, struggling from broad generalizations for generations. For Cleveland, which suffered through a bunch of “The” moments -- “The Drive,” “The Shot,” “The Fumble” and “The Dennis Kucinich” -- LeBron James has given the city a few other moments to remember, namely “The Comeback” and “The Block.” Most importantly, he gave Cleveland the championship, and that’s your fairy-tale ending. *** Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. the seedpod of a cotton plant. The female boll weevil lays eggs on the boll and the larvae eat the cotton fibers. A major infestation can destroy as much as 60% of an entire cotton crop, as happened in Enterprise, Alabama. The weevils destroyed not only the cotton crop but at the same time collapsed their entire economy. To survive, a few desperate farmers began to experiment by planting peanuts instead. To their surprise they found that peanut farming was far more profitable than cotton, and soon the local economy began booming to record levels. The farming community was so grateful to the weevil for forcing them to switch their crops over to peanuts that they erected a permanent shrine and statue as a tribute to the troublesome insect. The plaque reads, “In profound appreciation of the Boll Weevil and what it has done as the Herald of Prosperity.” BENEVOLENT BEETLES

• Different beetles eat different things, such as leaves, pollen, other bugs, and so on. But some of the most beneficial beetles are the ones that will dine on dead things or even dung. Although most of us view it as disgusting and repulsive, these beetles actually perform the vital function of recycling garbage and waste by breaking it down and reducing it to its basic elements. In so doing, they render these substances reusable by other plants and animals.
