In the 1940s there were only 60 possible poisons that could be used to kill a person. Then came the chemical explosion, and by the mid-1970s there were some 5,000 poisons which could be combined in different ways to produce perhaps a quarter of a million different deadly doses. Come along with Tidbits as we learn a few things about poisons!

• Today botulism lives indefinitely as a dormant spore in air and dirt, surviving extreme temperatures between absolute zero and boiling. When it finds the right conditions— plenty of food and an absence of oxygen— it multiplies, releasing toxins. Sickness from botulism is particularly worrysome for canners. If a jar has not been heated high enough or long enough, the botulism organism in those conditions will survive and thrive. POISON FACTS

• A cobra has enough venom stored in its glands to kill 30 people. The bite of a cobra can kill a man in 15 minutes if the dose is big enough. Ounce for ounce, cobra venom is 40 times deadlier than cyanide, five times more deadly than the venom of the black widow, and about the same toxicity as scorpion venom. Three drops can be deadly. Cobra venom is especially toxic because it contains a bundle of different poisons: one affects the nerves, one destroys red blood cells, and one paralyzes the muscles.

U.S., and about 8,000 people are bitten by them each year. Of those, five to ten will die.

• There are two kinds of venom, which is a modified saliva. One is a nerve poison that stops the heart and lungs. The other attacks the blood cells and tissues that aid in the digestion of food. Small animals die quickly from snake bites, but large animals are seldom killed. The snake has enzymes in its own stomach that deactivates the poison. Still, if a snake accidentally bites itself, it dies.

• The deadliest snake in the U.S. is the eastern diamondback rattlesnake, although it only ranks #23 on the list of world’s most toxic snake venoms. • 75% of snake bites in the U.S. are from a rattlesnake. • Rattlesnake venom that has been stored for over 50 years still retains its potency.

or 1/100th of a drop, can kill a full grown adult through paralysis. How can such a small amount of a substance kill such a large organism? A very effective way is through enzyme sabotage. • An enzyme is a catalyst for biochemical reactions. In very tiny amounts, an enzyme has great benign effects on a living organism. For example, the enzyme maltase takes water and other materials and turns them into glucose. The enzyme cytochrome turns oxygen in the blood into a usable form that the brain requires in order to function. There are thousands of enzymes in the human body. A single liver cell, for example, has about 50,000 enzymes.

POISONOUS PLOTS

• During the Revolutionary War in 1776, a cook in George Washington’s camp overheard a plot to kill the General by poisoning his peas. The cook tipped off Washington, who quietly ate the rest of his lunch, leaving the peas untouched. The peas were then fed to some chickens, and all of them quickly died. It is not known what became of the traitor.

By Samantha Weaver

* It was beloved 20th-century American dancer, singer and actor Fred Astaire who made the following sage observation: “The higher up you go, the more mistakes you are allowed. Right at the top, if you make enough of them, it’s considered to be your style.” * If you’re of a certain age, you may remember the popular cartoon “Far Side,” by Gary Larson. You may not realize, however, that this daily chuckle influenced science as well as humor. In a 1982 drawing, Larson dubbed the spikes at the end of a stegosaurus’s tail the “thagomizer” -- which is what paleontologists call the spikes today. * If you write the word “suns” upside down, it still says “suns.” * This election season might be a good time to resurrect the word “flapdoodler.” During Victorian times, any annoyingly boastful or self-righteous person was considered to be a flapdoodler. * In Britain in the early 2000s, dead hedgehogs started turning up with their heads stuck in McFlurry cups. It seems that the little creatures would stick their heads in to get to the remains of the discarded treat, then they’d be unable to get out and would starve to death. In response, in 2006 McDonald’s changed the design of the McFlurry cups to be more hedgehog-friendly. * If you’re planning a road trip to the Pacific Northwest, keep in mind that in Oregon it’s against the law to test your endurance while driving a car. * You might be surprised to learn that Helen Keller, probably best known as the first deaf and blind person to earn a bachelor of arts degree, was one of the first members of the American Civil Liberties Union. *** Thought for the Day: “I want people to talk to one another no matter what their difference of opinion might be.” -- Studs Terkel (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

SOME INTERESTING EXAMPLES OF

WORDS: CURIOUS COUPLES • What do ankle and anchor have in common? They share the Latin root word “ank” meaning “bend.” The Anglo-Saxons borrowed “ank” to make the flexible ankle; the Greeks took the same root word and applied it to the curve of the anchor which held their ships in place. • “Baby,” “babble,” and “barbarian” all spring from the Greek word “barbarous” meaning a foreigner or one who speaks an incomprehensible language. It’s the same story for the rhubarb plant: the land along the river Volga was known to the Greeks as the Rha. Since this was an unknown territory, they called it “barbaron” or barbarian. A plant they found there was dubbed “rha barbaron” meaning “from the barbarian land of Rha” and then shortened to rhubarb. • The words “bull” and “fool” both come from the Anglo-Saxon word “bula” meaning a swelledup creature, such as a big bull or a big-headed fool. • According to legend, St. Martin was an officer in the Roman army. He was riding his horse along a lonely road one cold winter day when a beggar stopped him and asked for alms. Martin had no money, but seeing that the beggar was shivering in his rags, he took off his cloak, cut it in two with his sword, and gave half to the beggar. The story goes that the beggar then revealed himself to be Christ. A shrine was erected on the spot to commemorate the divine event where Martin had offered Christ half of a cloak. The shrine was called a “cappella” which is Latin for “little cloak.” Through the years every roadside shrine became known as a cappella. The French turned the word into “chapelle” and the English translated it as “chapel.” The Latin word for cloak is “cappa” and gives us the word cape. Therefore, “cape” and “chapel” spring from the same source. • The Anglo-Saxon word “heath” meant a wasteland, and gave us the words heath, heather, and heathen.

condition is 760-320-0997 called bursitis.Fax: 760-320-1630 • “Polak” means Polish man, and “polka” means Office: Polish woman. When a new dance originating • In Old English, “grappe” meant a cluster of fruit in Bohemia took the world by storm, it was growing together, and “grape” was the hook that called the polka. The polka was very popular they were gathered with. Today, “grape” means and many different items were named after the the fruit itself, and “grapple” means struggling dance. When a new polka skirt was designed, the with a problem much as a harvester struggles dressmaker thought circles looked festive, so he with a hook.  decided to name the new design “polka dots.” • “Glamour” and “grammar” both come from the same root word. In the 1500s, anyone who could speak and write Latin grammar was thought be have special magical powers. In England such a person was said to have “gramarye” and the Scots pronounced it “glamour.” Both meant that any person capable of understanding Latin was surely capable of casting charms as well. • “Trunk” is the Latin word for tree, so “tree trunk” is actually redundant. A traveling case became known as a trunk because the first ones were made out of the hollowed out section of a tree. • “Infans” is Latin for “not able to speak” meaning a baby, or a member of the “infantry” who is not allowed to speak unless spoken to.

I heard some simple words for dog owners to live by on the radio recently, and they are paraphrased here: Don’t ask: “What did you do?” He’ll never answer you. Don’t say his name with the word “no.” He’ll never come to you. Don’t point your finger at him. He’ll never trust your hands. Don’t say “no” over and over and over again. It’s only a word. Don’t tell him he’s a bad dog. Why is he a bad dog? Maybe it’s you! “Don’ts” are often thought of as negative speak, especially on the West Coast. But these are the good don’ts, the important ones, the ones that will keep your relationship with your dog strong and healthy as the two of you navigate the challenges of interspecies communication. With the right approach to training, canine behavior can be modified from as early on as 8 weeks to as late in life as 12 to 14 years. The “right” approach is determined by the dog -- or, rather, his personality or temperament. For example, a hardheaded dog will require a firm voice and technique; whereas, a timid dog would only be made more fearful by the same treatment. Bottom line: In order to train your dog, you have to know your dog. And part of knowing your dog is knowing dogs in general and what to expect. Dogs bark. They chew. They jump, dig, nip, teethe, whine, wiggle and bark some more. None of this is bad -- it’s just dogs being dogs. But some of these behaviors may not align with your expectations. Consider yourself warned: Expect these behaviors. When your expectations are realistic, you can prepare. Ever heard of the Five P’s? Purpose, Preparation, Planning, Practice and Performance. They serve as good guidance in the business world, and they apply to dog training, too.

Tips for Avoiding Desert Rattlesnakes The California Department of Fish and Wildlife recommends these precautions against rattlesnakes for Coachella Valley mountain trail and desert hikers: • Rattlesnakes aren’t usually aggressive unless they feel threatened or are deliberately provoked. 1

30

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

Some Insights Into SSA Operations Q:

I work for the Social Security Administration in the Dallas area. I enjoy reading your column and I have even learned a few things about the Social Security program. I like the way you explain the reasoning behind various laws to your readers. That is something that is lacking in the training we get from SSA. But I do have one gripe. I wish you would stop telling people to “talk to someone at their local Social Security office” or to “visit their local Social Security office.” Our staffing levels are always being cut. People should tr y to resolve their business at our toll-free number or at our website. If they insist on going to a Social Security office in person, they should call first to make an appointment. Thanks for listening.

A:

Point well-taken. Although people can just drop into any Social Security office and eventually get served, it makes more sense to call ahead of time to make an appointment. They should call SSA’s toll-free number -- 800-772-1213 -- to do that. And more and more people are comfortable taking care of their Social Security business online. SSA has a pretty good and easy-to-navigate website that lets you do just about anything from your computer. So why do I tell people to “talk to someone

at their local Social Security office”? I guess it’s partly because I’m an old-fashioned guy. I miss the days when a Social Security office was a nice place to visit. And people would just drop in anytime. No appointments necessary. And part of being old-fashioned is that I do miss the one-on-one personal service people used to get. I liked sitting down with folks and not only helping them fill out benefit application forms but also explaining why rules and laws were in place and how the system worked. It is obviously more efficient to try to handle as much Social Security work as possible via the phone or computer. But I still think there are some things that can be handled best by sitting down and talking to a real human being.

Q:

I am a 72-year-old widow. I get two Social Security payments each month. One is my own Social Security check and the other is a widow’s payment. I have no problem with that. But I have a neighbor who also is a widow. She also has her own Social Security. But she gets just one check for the combined amount of her own Social Security benefit and her widow’s benefit. I am just curious. Can you explain why I get two checks but my neighbor just gets one check?

A:

I am going to guess that you and your husband came from different parts of the country, while your neighbor and her husband were from roughly the same area. And why that is an issue with your Social Security checks has to do with how the Social Security Administration handles and processes Social Security claims. As you probably know, there are a wide range of Social Security numbers, almost all of them starting in the 001 to 600 range. Those numbers are assigned based on where you were living when you applied for a Social Security card. For example, my Social Security number starts with 394. And you can check SSA’s website and learn that 394 numbers were issued in Wisconsin. Lower numbers were issued on the East Coast, and they got progressively higher going down the Atlantic seaboard and then farther and farther west. SSA has seven processing centers around the country, where all Social Security claims -whether taken in local Social Security offices or over the phone or online -- eventually end up. And claims are distributed to these processing centers based on the Social Security number. I don’t know the precise breakdown, but for example, there is a processing center in New York that handles all claims with SSNs in roughly the 001 through 199 range. Another center in Birmingham, Alabama, handles cases with numbers in the 200 range. A center in Chicago handles the 300 numbers. And so on. Now getting back to your question. Let’s say that you are originally from the east Coast and have a SSN that begins 009. And your husband was from the Midwest and has a number that begins with 337. Your Social Security claim would have

Page 11

been sent to New York, and your Social Security checks are authorized by that processing center. Your widow’s claim on your husband’s Social Security record would have gone to Chicago, and so your widow’s benefit checks come from there. On the other hand, your neighbor and her husband must have come from the same general area. So both her retirement claim on her own SSN and her widow’s claim on her husband’s SSN went to the same processing center, and they were able to simply combine her payments into one check.

Q:

I’m the kind of guy who likes to see things in black and white directly from the source before I believe them. When it comes to Social Security, I’m not saying I don’t believe what you say. But I’d like to see the rules and regulations you discuss in your column in writing from the Social Security Administration. But I am having a hard time finding source information on Social Security’s website. Can you help?

A:

I can steer you to two sources of information from SSA. One is something called the Programs Operations Manual System. It’s essentially the bible for the rules and regulations that govern Social Security programs and policies. It’s the same source every SSA employee uses. To find POMS, go to www.socialsecurity.gov. Pull down the “Menu” button at the top of the homepage and under “Research Policy and Planning” click on the “Program Rules” link and then on “Employee Operating Instructions.” But if you want something a little less comprehensive and a much easier to understand, then I suggest you look through one or more of the hundreds of pamphlets and fact sheets the agency produces. You’ll find this source material at SSA’s website under the “Publications” link near the bottom of the homepage. * * * If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has the answer. a treatment called Fumaderm that is available in Germany, but I have never heard of it being used in the U.S. -- C.S. ANSWER: Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin condition that can range from annoying to life-threatening in severity. Psoriasis and its common complication, psoriatic arthritis, together are a highly destructive arthritis that often requires powerful treatment: biologic agents, like adalimumab (Humira) or etanercept (Enbrel). These do have the possibility of serious side effects, such as reactivation of tuberculosis.

Green Nail Syndrome Is Not Easy to Treat DEAR DR. ROACH: For the past four months, I have had an infection around the cuticle of my right index finger. There is green coloration under the nail near the cuticle, and the nail grew rather deformed. I am a gardener and a homemaker, so I tend to wash my hands often. The urgent-care doctor I saw prescribed clindamycin and mupirocin cream. I also was told to soak my finger twice a day. My family doctor took a culture and, because she did not know if I had a fungus or an infection, prescribed Lamisil and levofloxacin. She also recommended saltwater or peroxide soaks twice daily. The culture showed pseudomonas as the cause of the infection. With no improvement, I saw an orthopedic doctor. He told me to continue the soaking and the mupirocin cream. On my second visit, he lanced the area between the cuticle and the nail bed. There was improvement, but the symptoms soon returned. The orthopedic doctor spoke of removing the nail as a possible solution to clearing up the infection. Is this my next step, or is there something else I can do? -- P.B.

Operation Gratitude

Fumaderm has been used in Germany for 19 years with a generally good safety record. There have been reports of a disease, PML, caused by brain virus, associated with Fumaderm, although it isn’t clear whether the Fumaderm predisposed the individuals to develop this infection. No medicine is free of the possibility of side effects, and treatment for psoriasis should be appropriate for the degree of severity of the illness. If you are doing well enough with your current treatment, I wouldn’t recommend trying a treatment with a higher risk of serious side effects. * * *

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

The On-Q for Pain

ANSWER: It sounds as though you have the aptly named “green nail syndrome,” which is caused by the bacteria you mention, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and which often is complicated by a paronychia, an infection along the side of the nail. Your orthopedic surgeon is quite right that sometimes the nail needs to be removed; however, many people can avoid that unpleasant procedure (I had to perform it once) with ciprofloxacin (the best oral antibiotic against pseudomonas), antiseptic soaks and by keeping the hands meticulously dry, using gloves and even using a hairdryer to dry the nails after soaking or cleaning. Operation Gratitude needs our help. Carolyn Blashek, founder of OpGrat, recently sent out a request for funds to ship 3,272 more care packages to troops currently deployed in dangerous areas. It costs $15 to send one box, so you can do the math. It needs a lot of dollars. Since its founding in 2003, Operation Gratitude has sent 1.5 million care packages to our active-duty men and women who are deployed overseas. Donations of items for the boxes are given by large corporations and small companies, individuals and groups. The boxes always contain excellent treats valued at nearly $100, and might include videos, flash drives, candy, books, toiletries, games and more. Each one contains letters from home. Sometimes there might be a key to a brand-new vehicle that will be waiting when the soldier, sailor, airman or Marine gets home. Additionally, OpGrat now sends packages to first responders, wounded heroes, new recruits and more. But the postage ... that’s the big problem. There are no government handouts, no discounts from the Post Office. It’s all on us to help with that. OpGrat always does a big push at the holidays, and the goal this year is to send out 250,000 packages as they close in on the 2 million mark. If you can help out with the cost of mailing a couple of boxes, or even just a few dollars, send a check to:

10 Ways Seniors Can Avoid Identity Theft DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: What can seniors do to protect themselves from identity theft? My brother-in-law, who is 78, recently had his identity stolen and he is going through a horrendous nightmare and a lot of health-threatening stress dealing with all the problems it's causing. How can I keep this from happening to me? -- Worried Relative Dear Worried: Great question! Each year around 17 million people fall victim to identity theft, which happens when someone gets access to your Social Security number, bank or credit card account number, or other identifying information and uses the privileges it provides in order to steal from you. Here are some quick tips you can use to reduce your risks: Guard your personal information: Never give your Social Security number, credit card number, checking or savings account numbers to anyone unless you yourself have initiated the contact. Also, do not carry your Social Security card around in your wallet or purse, and don’t carry around your Medicare card either unless you’re going to the doctor. Get off mailing lists: Put a stop to those preapproved creditcard offers that unexpectedly arrive in the mail. They are a gold mine in the hands ID thieves. Do not throw them out in the trash without shredding them first. Your personal information is already printed on them. To stop receiving them visit optoutprescreen.com or call 888-567-8688 – they will ask for your Social Security number

You have a set of ashtrays that were made by Cowan Pottery. R. Guy Cowan founded his pottery in Cleveland in 1912. In 1921, he moved his factory to nearby Rocky River, Ohio. Cowan pieces were known for their sleek and strong shapes that were influenced by art deco designs. The Great Depression took its toll on the pottery, and the company was forced into bankruptcy. By 1932, all operations were ceased. Your ashtrays were made in 1929. They were sold in sets of four. The Collector’s Encyclopedia of Cowan Pottery lists their shape as No. 927-F. The New Villains I think I remember a time when letting your little kid win was the correct and right thing to do. Now, thanks to PlayStation and Xbox, it is pretty much impossible to beat them. Over the holidays my nephew showed me his new game, NBA whatever. “Cool,” I thought. Well ... it was more than just cool. It was a “mindbending” experience. I’m not going to date myself, but Blip was our Game Boy, and our basketball game was decided by the guy who could hit the most unmissable corner threes. His game was better than anything I’d ever seen.

“Let’s play!” he says. “Sure,” says me.

“What team do you want to be?”

Without hesitating, I say the Knicks -- my least favorite, favorite team. (He usually picks the Philadelphia teams, so I always begin a video game with the better team.) After messing around with the uniform selection for, oh, about 20 minutes, he picks his team. “I pick Michael Jordan, Lebron James, Kareem, Bird and Tim Duncan,” he replies, before handing me a controller with 20 different knobs, levers and buttons. “Good luck!” So the little runt, formerly known as my great little nephew, proceeds to trounce me. Every once in a while, I get Carmelo Anthony to drive to the hoop uncontested, but it ends up as a travel because I have no clue how to make him let go of the ball.

“Wanna play again?”

Fact is, I can’t blame him. On long plane flights I like to play MLB Manager, and I always cheat by choosing the team with the first draft pick and trade until I have an outfield consisting of Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle and Babe Ruth (Ted Williams at DH), and a starting rotation of Feller, Koufax, Walter Johnson, Cy Young and Greg Maddux. I get upset when we don’t win 140 regular season games. But sometimes my team gets swept by the St. Louis Browns in the World Series. It happens. Herb Brooks used to say that “all-star teams don’t work.” This observation, while mostly true, has been disproven by the NBA Olympic “Dream Team” concept, but we get the point, and besides, it’s different when it comes to individual leagues. Every year, the New York Yankees field an All-Star team on paper, and they don’t (usually) win. Then there’s the curious case of Kevin Durant. Fans in Oklahoma City are inconsolable -- they’ve lost the face of their franchise ... the only superstar they’ve known since their inception. Where is he going? He’s going to join Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, to form what will be, in all likelihood, the greatest team of all-time.

®

Vol. XII Issue 31

We’ve seen this before (Miami Heat), and you know, they probably won’t win every game. My only question is, how come Oakland has all this money? What is wrong with the Knicks? My advice to Oklahoma City and all the other franchises struggling to keep pace is to look at this another way: You didn’t lose a player, the entire league found a new villain. * * *

pass through the digestive system without doing any harm. But when holes were drilled through the bean, it provided easy access to the toxin contained inside. Children who put the beads in their mouths, or women who wore them on sweaty necks became seriously ill and died. Milleners had to use mercury in the process of forming the hats, and as a result would get mercury on their skin and breathe mercury vapor. Soon their hands would begin to shake and they would undergo weird personality changes, eventually becoming “mad as a hatter” due to the toxic effects of mercury poisoning on the central nervous system. AN ANTIDOTE ANECDOTE

• In 1830 a pharmacist from Paris rose before the members of the French Academy and told them that powdered charcoal was an effective antidote to many poisons of the day. To prove it, he swallowed ten times the amount of strychnine needed to kill a human, then followed it with half an ounce of charcoal. The Academy members knew the strychnine would normally have given him spastic convulsions and quickly killed him, yet he confidently walked among the shocked assembly unharmed. Amazed by the indisputable evidence they witnessed, they knew this was a monumental breakthrough in the treatment of poisoning. • For the next century, charcoal, because of its incredibly absorbent nature, was the premiere antidote the world over. In the stomach it absorbs and deactivates alcohol, arsenic, barbiturates, cocaine, digitalis, ipecac, morphine, nicotine, opium, and quinine, among other things. Even today, a poison victim in a modern hospital is often treated with a hemodetoxifier, in which the blood is removed from the body, run through a medical-grade charcoal filter, then infused back to the bloodstream. 
