• A banana tree is actually the world’s largest herb, in the same family as lilies, orchids and palms. Botanically, the fruit is classified as a giant berry. A banana tree can grow thirty feet tall, making it the largest plant that doesn’t have a woody trunk. This also makes it susceptible to wind damage, and many of the world’s largest banana-producing areas are located in hurricane country. • When a mature banana tree is cut down or blown over, new shoots will sprout from the parent stalk. It takes only about 18 months of continuously warm sunny weather for a banana plant to grow from a shoot to a mature plant bearing fruit. The banana plant is perennial, meaning it will grow year after year from the same roots. • Each stalk can contain up to 150 individual Bananas: Turn to page 3

• In a massive cave called Waitomo Cavern in New Zealand lives a fly with the scientific name Arachnocampa luminosa that’s about twice as big as a mosquito. It clings to the roof of the cave over an underground river and trails in the air a series of sticky threads of mucus four or five feet long. Under its tail is a light-emitting organ which lights up the shimmering mucus strands. Any insects in the cave are attracted to the light and stick to the thread once they land on it. They are then hauled in and eaten by the fly. With several thousand flies simultaneously lighting up their shimmering threads, the illuminated sight is eerie and unforgettable. • Ancient Roman poet Virgil once held a grand

Bananas: (from page one) bananas, and weigh up to one hundred pounds. A typical banana plant can yield about three or four harvests over the course of its lifespan. After that, it is cut down and left to turn into soil in order to support the shoot that re-grows from the original stem. • Modern bananas are unable to reproduce on their own and must have human assistance. They do not have seeds, and are spread only by cloning. Banana plants are propagated by transplanting suckers and corms that grow off the mother plant’s roots. Therefore, every modern commercial banana plant is a genetic clone. • Because every banana is identical, they are all susceptible to the same diseases. One popular strain of banana is now nearly extinct due to a fungus, and the same incurable banana disease continues to spread from one banana plantation to the next, threatening the world supply of bananas. • India grows about 20% of the world’s bananas, but exports very few of them because bananas grown in India are consumed in India. Other countries such as Ecuador export nearly 100% of their banana crop. • Bananas are cut while green because they keep

* It was English Victorian author Samuel Butler who made the following sage observation: “Words are like money; there is nothing so useless, unless when in actual use.” * Martha Jane Canary -- better known as Calamity Jane -- was a noted frontierswoman in the late 19th century. She defied expectations of women by refusing to wear dresses, becoming a scout and fighting against Indians in the West. As one contemporary commenter observed, “She swore, she drank, she wore men’s clothing. She was 50 years ahead of her time.” * Those who study such things say that two-thirds of a shark’s brain is dedicated to detecting and sorting out odors. * In his 1510 book “The Adventures of Esplandian,” Spanish author Garci Rodriguez de Montalvo wrote of an island peopled entirely by Amazon-like women, and he called it California. When Spaniard Francisco de Ulloa was exploring the west coast of North America, his initial surveys of the Baja Peninsula led him to believe the land was an island, so the region was given the name of the mythical place: California. * In Mongolia, it’s common to put salt in one’s tea before drinking it. * If you’re a fan of nature documentaries, you’ve doubtless seen footage of Africa’s Serengeti, site of the world’s largest terrestrial mammal migration. If you’ve see images of the place, you won’t be surprised to learn that in Maasai, the word “Serengeti” means “the place where the land runs on forever.” * You’ve probably heard of John Steinbeck’s celebrated novel “Of Mice and Men,” but you probably didn’t know that it was almost titled “Something That Happened.” *** Thought for the Day: “Do you wish the world were happy? / Then remember day by day, / Just to scatter seeds of kindness / As you pass along the way.” -- Ella Wheeler Wilcox (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

The “Grey’s Anatomy” alum will be working with Shonda Rimes again -- as a recurring character in season two of “The Catch,” which airs this spring. The exact nature of his role -- as well as the number of episodes he’ll be in -- has been kept under wraps. If you’re familiar with the show, you know that this is a con-man/caper series, so each week is full of surprises, and now we can add T.R. to the list. The series stars Mireille Enos of “The Killing” and Peter Kraus of “Parenthood” and “Six Feet Under” fame. Shonda released the following statement of this casting coup: “This has been a thrilling secret to keep! One of my favorite family members is home!” T.R. is also feeling the love, stating: “I am heartened to be returning to Shondaland and excited to work with this exceptional cast!” *** I just starting binge-watching “Orange Is the New Black,” and I’m really impressed by the performance of Samira Wiley. * On Aug. 27, 1883, the most powerful volcanic eruption in recorded history occurs on Krakatau, a small volcanic island in Indonesia. Heard 3,000 miles away, the explosions threw 5 cubic miles of earth 50 miles into the air, created 120-foot tsunamis and killed 36,000 people.

YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau
Gullible Social Security Naysayers Will Believe Anything There is a silly, dumb and totally misleading email about Social Security that is floating around online -- being passed around from one uniformed email recipient to the next. Not a day goes by that a copy of it doesn’t land in my inbox, usually with a comment similar to the one I got today: “I knew the system was rigged, and this email proves it!” I simply can’t believe how gullible some people can be! But I guess if you are predisposed to think that Social Security is biggest scam ever perpetrated, then you will believe anything you read on the internet. The email starts off with this headline in big bold letters: “Who died before they collected Social Security?” It then goes on to make this twisted point: “The only thing wrong with the government’s calculation of available Social Security is they forgot to figure in the people who died before they ever collected a Social Security check. Where did that money go?”
Tidbits of Coachella Valley
Of course it’s true that over the 80-year history of the Social Security program, millions of people died before they ever had a chance to collect Social Security checks. So where did their Social Security contributions go? Well, the email’s author failed to take into account that the vast majority of those deceased taxpayers left behind widows or widowers who received Social Security benefits on their accounts. Or in the case of deceased younger workers, they left behind tens of millions of minor children who got billions of dollars in monthly survivor’s benefits. (I was one of those kids about 55 years ago -- although my share of the billion-dollar pot was all of $22 per month.) And for every deceased worker who died with no eligible dependents, there are hundreds of Social Security recipients who lived well into their 80s, 90s, or even beyond and who received far more in benefit payouts then they ever paid in Social Security taxes. If you want more precise data about where all the Social Security money went, it’s available. The Social Security Administration’s actuaries can account for every nickel ever collected in Social Security taxes -- from 1937 to present. Go on the Social Security government website. Under “Menu” at the top of the homepage, click on “Actuarial Resources” in the “Research, Policy, and Planning” section, and then on “Trust Funds.” There you’ll find all the information about all those nickels. Just as an example, here is a snapshot of Social Security’s balance sheet for 2014 (the most recent complete data I could find). Total income: $884.3 billion -- 85.5 percent of that came from payroll and self-employment taxes, 11.1 percent came from interest earned on trust fund assets and 3.4 percent came from taxation of Social Security benefits. Total outgo: $884.3 billion -- 96 percent of that went to pay monthly checks to Social Security beneficiaries, 0.7 percent went to administrative expenses, 0.5 percent went to the Railroad Retirement Board to cover Social Security benefits paid to RRB beneficiaries, and 2.8 percent remained as assets in the Social Security trust funds. The silly email then goes on to try to make the point that Social Security is a rotten deal for all Americans. Using some cockamamie math, it determines that had the big bad government not stolen your money from you (in the form of Social Security payroll taxes), you would have accumulated a nest egg of $892,919.98. Gosh, they figured that right down to the penny. They sure must be smart people! What a deal! Every working man and woman in this country would have been almost a millionaire if it wasn’t for that awful, money-wasting Social Security program. Old timers or historians reading this column will remember how wonder-
Page 11
ful things were before the Social Security program was enacted. Everyone was living the good life and all senior citizens retired with Warren Buffet-sized nest eggs. Those sure were the good old days. (Actually, more than half of all senior citizens were living below the poverty level before Social Security. After 80 years of Social Security, that rate is well below 10 percent.) Then the email trots out the timeworn Ponzi scheme argument. In really big and bold letters, the email states: “The folks in Washington have pulled off a bigger Ponzi scheme than Bernie Madoff ever did!” As I have pointed out so many times in this column, Social Security is NOT an investment scheme. It is what its name clearly implies: a “social” insurance system. Because Social Security’s potential beneficiary pool includes almost every man, woman and child in this country, you simply cannot set aside enough capital to fund all future benefits. Like ours, almost every Social Security system on earth (and there are about 165 Social Security programs around the world) runs on a “pay as you go” basis -- with the taxes collected from today’s workers funding benefits payable to today’s Social Security recipients. If you want to call that a Ponzi scheme, go ahead. But it’s worked in this country for 80 years, and it’s worked in other countries for over 100 years. It’s simply the only viable way to run a large nationwide social insurance program. Finally, the viral email goes off on a big rant about Social Security being labeled an “entitlement.” After offering a lot of misleading arguments about the alleged benefits received by members of Congress, the email says: “And they have the nerve to call my Social Security an entitlement!” It’s too bad that word has taken on such a negative connotation. Because you see, Social Security is an “entitlement” in the truest sense of the term. Social Security benefits make up Title II of the Social Security Act. So when you become eligible for Social Security benefits, and sign an application for such benefits and your claim is approved, then you are legally “entitled” to those monthly checks. Social Security is just one of many government “entitlements.” It’s simply a legal term. But so many people, including the author of this goofy email, get so darn worked up about it. * * * If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has the answer. By the time your letter is published, your vitamin D levels should have returned to normal. If they haven’t, it’s time to look for a rare cause, such as sarcoidosis, where occasionally the abnormal cells can make vitamin D.

Some other good nonprofits to donate to are the Lions Club Hearing Aid Recycling Program (go to lionsclubs.org and search for: HARP), and Hearing Charities of America (hearingaiddonations.org, 816-333-8300), which is founded by Sertoma, a civic service organization dedicated to hearing health.
Donating Old Hearing Aids, Eyeglasses and Mobility Equipment DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: Where are some good places to donate old hearing aids, eyeglasses and mobility equipment? My uncle passed away a few months ago and left behind a bunch of useful aids that could surely help someone else. --Searching Nephew Dear Searching: Donating old, unused assistive living aids and/or medical equipment is a great way to help those in need who can’t afford it, and in most cases its tax deductible too. Here are some good places to check into. Hearing Aids There are several national nonprofit service organizations that offer hearing aid recycling programs. Hearing aids that are donated are usually refurbished and either redistributed to those in need, or resold with the proceeds going to buy new hearing aids for people who can’t afford them. One of the most popular places to donate old hearing aids, as well as hearing aid parts or other assistive listening devices is the Starkey Hearing Foundation “Hear Now” recycling program (starkeyhearingfoundation.org, 800328-8602), which collects around 60,000 hearing aids a year. Hearing aids and other listening devices should be sent to: Starkey Hearing Foundation, ATTN: Hearing Aid Recycling, 6700 Washington Avenue South, Eden Prairie, MN 55344.

Clock Survives the Test of Time Q:
This is a photo of an old clock I own. I think it’s called a mantle clock. It still keeps the time. It is 19 inches tall and 10 inches wide. On the back is a label with the words “Jet -- Manufactured by Wm. L. Gilbert Clock Co. -- Winsted -- Conn.” The wood case is black and has decorative car ving. Do you have any idea when it was made, what it originally cost and what its current value is?
A:
William Lewis Gilbert started his clock factory in 1866 in Winsted, Connecticut. The Gilbert Clock Co produced high-quality clocks for the average consumer. It made banjo, wall, steeple and mantel clock models. The designs reflected the art nouveau arts and crafts movement. Your clock has the “Jet” design -- of which there were several patterns -- and was made with ebonized w o o d case. It has a b r a s s m o v e m e n t , strikes on the hour and is eight-day wind. The glass door design is etched. The carving on the wood case s h o w s your clock The Gilbert Clock Co. was founded style is the in 1866. Eastlake period of design. Gilbert Clock Co. survived the Great Depression, and during World War II it made inexpensive alarm clocks. The company closed its operations in the 1960s.
This mark is on the bottom of a mug. Also included with the mark is the name “Friar Tuck.” It was in a box of miscellaneous items I bought at an antiques auction. The mug is shaped like a monk and stands over 5 inches tall. I am curious if it is a Hummel. Could you tell me about its histor y and value?
Gobel Porzellanfabrik produced a variety of series wares.
A:
Your mug was made by Goebel Porzellanfabrik in Roedental, Germany. Although Goebel produced the Hummel line of figures, yours is not one. Hummel figures were the work of Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel and were always marked with the bee mark and the words “I. Hummel.” Goebel also produced a variety of series wares. Your mug is an example of the “Friar Tuck” series that included mugs, salt and pepper shakers, tankards, banks and beer steins. According to the legend of Robin Hood, Friar Tuck was one of his Merry Men. He was a jovial man who enjoyed life, food and drink. Your mug was made around 1950 and might sell for around $50. * * * Address your questions to Anne McCollam, P.O. Box 247, Notre Dame, IN 46556. End of an Error If we needed any further evidence that baseball is, once again, metamorphosing into a different era, this season’s trade deadline was all the proof needed.
All major sports do the same -- basketball recently saw the addition of the three-point line, football killed the kickoff return, tennis now allows limited coaching, boxing switched to 12-round fights and hockey added the shootout. But no other sport has fiddled with its secret sauce as often as baseball. What exactly constitutes an “era,” you may ask? Well, in Boston, that’s how they pronounce the word “error,” as in “Nomah shouldn’t be chahged with an era on that play!” Those in the English-speaking parts of the country generally see an “era” as beginning with a readily identifiable change in culture. Baseball, probably due to its fan base’s love of statistical scrutiny, seems to revel in this sort of unofficial, much-writtenabout classification system. Let’s see ... there was the deadball era, the spitball era, the Babe Ruth era, the integration era, the World War II era, the expansion era, the year of the higher mound (not an era, but a noticeable blip on the timeline), the free-agent era, the designated-hitter era, the cocaine era, the steroid era, the “Moneyball” era and now this era. What do we call this era? The 100-plus mph bullpen era? The infield shift era? The Chachi Arcola Republican Convention Speech era? The search for stars? While the league has its share of superstars, if Bryce Harper, Giancarlo Stanton or Clayton Kershaw walked past you at the Kwik-E Mart, 95 percent of the population would not recognize them, I’d wager (but not on the game if I was a manager). Baseball is in great financial shape, or so we are constantly being told. Still, the game has some major-league flaws. The fact that an entire state can’t watch a Yankee game due to a fight with a cable company is abhorrent. The fact that a single exhibition game that managers don’t play to win can control home-field advantage for the seven-game championship series is moronic. One thing is clear, however: We are moving out of the boring “on-base percentage is the best statistic there is” phase. Unless it’s Rickey Henderson, nobody spends hundreds of dollars to go see a baseball game and root, root, root for the home team to walk. Thankfully, Ned Yost and the Royals freed us from that oppression. They did this by developing a strong farm system that taught fundamentals stressing movement ... great defense, speed and hits, backed by a lights-out bullpen. Now that’s baseball worth paying to see. It’s been a little over 40 years since George Steinbrenner ushered in the free-agent era by signing Catfish Hunter. At this year’s trade deadline, Hal Steinbrenner’s fire sale of five veterans, the surefire impending release of A-Rod and lack of extension talk for Mark Texeira in order to shore up an anemic farm, signaled another change: the big-trade era, perhaps? I’m personally in favor of austerity because no matter what, a few things will never change for baseball: Good pitching beats good hitting, you can’t catch a ball hit out of the park and the team with the most runs wins.

most of their wages in company stores, whose supplies were imported rather than being produced locally. • In 1905, writer O. Henry authored a book called “Cabbages and Kings” which takes place in a mythical country in Central America called Anchuria. In the book, he coined the term ‘banana republic.’ During the 1930s this term became generic, denoting unstable countries whose economy is dependent upon a single resource, which is controlled by wealthy elites. • During World War I, many ships belonging to fruit companies which had been used to haul bananas were conscripted by the Navy for use in the war instead. The banana trade was strangled because there was no way to get bananas to market. The popularity of the fruit rebounded after the war ended, but the same thing happened during World War II when banana boats were once again conscripted for military use. • The song “Yes We Have No Bananas” was written in 1923 in response to frequent banana shortages caused by blight, hurricanes, and wars. • The invention of steamships, railroads, interstate highways, and refrigeration all spurred the popularity of bananas because they made it possible to rapidly get the fruit to market before it spoiled.
