Bad Guys: (from page one) used their military force to guard and protect innocent travelers that the thieving bands could be challenged. The thieves gradually began to disband, and the raids eventually stopped. • The name of this stealthy and coordinated fraternity of robbers originated from the Hindu word for thief or deceiver, “thag.” The crimes they committed were called acts of “thuggee.” Today a modified version of that word has come into English meaning a criminal who attacks innocent people -- and that's where we get our term thug. ROUGHSHOD RAIDERS
From there, the entire tribe of 80,000 crossed the Strait of Gibraltar and invaded North Africa, pillaging and plundering along the way. • Then they sacked Rome. Pope Leo the Great pleaded with Geiseric to refrain from murdering the people or burning the city, so they stole all their treasures instead and took the Empress hostage, along with her daughters. • After Geiseric's death in 477 A.D. his empire soon crumbled, but tales of his evil band of raiders lived on. The name that Geiseric gave to his distructive tribe has found its way into today's vernacular, denoting those who willfully destroy or deface property -- the Vandals.

• Featured as the central character, Patrick's last name soon entered into our language as a generic label describing a tough, aggressive, or violent youth. It began to appear in police reports, newspaper articles, and even in a Sherlock Holmes story. Today his name is still commonly used to describe someone who causes mayhem or disturbances through rowdy behavior. That descriptive term began with the reputation of an unruly man named Patrick Hooligan.

The mesmerizing drama/suspense series has been renewed for 10 more episodes, with season two premiering in early 2017 (no exact date as yet). As you know, the series stars Rob Perlman, Dana Delany, Garret Dillahunt and Julian Morris, and centers on a morally corrupt judge (played by Ron) who suffers a breakdown and believes that God is compelling him onto a path of vigilante justice. I spoke Ben Watkins recently with series creator and head writer Ben Watkins, who aside from letting me know that Linda Gray is joining the cast, also gave me the scoop on season two. “When there are things we can’t explain, we will try to find an answer for it. We say it’s science or religion or it’s crazy or it’s magic. In season two, Pernell continues to explore this question of whether he’s truly crazy or has he actually touched onto something supernatural. “We get a chance in season two to peel back some of the layers of what is going on, some of the sinister elements in the city of San Vincente, and how that is affecting Pernell’s journey. “We also get to explore a little bit about what was going on with PJ and the software he was working on. And there’s a connection there to Jocelyn. There’s a connection there to Nathan Brooks, and there’s a mystery related to that. That mystery is driven by Crystal. In season two, Pernell is on trial for murder, and Crystal is driving this mystery forward.” *** I loved Hugh Laurie in “Night Manager.” What else will he be in? -- Donnie T., Reno, Nevada

ardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa.” No evidence surfaced, and Apollinaire was released. Two years later, a former employee of the Louvre, Vincenzo Perggia, was arrested while trying to sell the famous painting. * On Sept. 11, 1921, Fatty Arbuckle, a silent-film era performer at the height of his fame, is arrested in San Francisco for the murder of aspiring actress Virginia Rappe. After two mistrials, the jury in Arbuckle’s third trial found him not guilty and even issued him an apology. * On Sept. 5, 1958, Boris Pasternak’s romantic novel “Dr. Zhivago” is published in the United States. The book was banned in the Soviet Union, but still won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958 after admirers smuggled out the manuscript. * On Sept. 6, 1972, a West German police attempt to rescue nine Israeli Olympic team members held hostage by Palestinian terrorists ends in disaster. All nine hostages were killed. Terrorists from Black September had stormed the Israeli quarters in the Olympic Village in Munich early the previous morning. * On Sept. 8, 1986, Nissan’s first European manufacturing plant opens in Sunderland, Britain, an area hit hard by plant closings. Some 25,000 people applied for the first 450 jobs advertised. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

The “only dog” gets all the toys, all the turf and all of your attention. You may worry that all of your attention isn’t enough, but dividing that attention by two, three or more only serves to shrink the “only” dog’s piece of the pie. For you, the dog owner, one dog means one mouth to feed, one series of vaccines to schedule and pay for each year, one personality to bond with, one body to exercise and one brain to train. Think long and hard before deciding to double or triple that. Multiple dogs mean more money, more time and, often, more trouble. Have you ever noticed the domino effect of a single bark on a neighborhood? One dog barks, the dog next door responds, the two down the street chime in, setting off the one across the way… Now imagine all that under one roof -- yours. Excessive barking is a common problem for the owners of multiple dogs. Another problem is not having the time to give each dog sufficient individual attention. Whenever you bring home a dog, bonding is top priority. If you’re starting from zero and decide to adopt two new puppies at the same time, that bonding must be done individually to be effective. Bonding won’t work as a package deal. Dogs are pack animals. Given the choice, they’ll bond with each other instead of you. That is their instinct. With multiple dogs, multiply the work you have to do to establish yourself as the pack leader by the number of dogs. When people adopt dogs in pairs, one pup is inevitably more outgoing than the other. Shy dogs naturally gravitate toward their species, which means, if you haven’t made the case for yourself as pack leader, they’ll follow the other dog and all of his peccadilloes, for better or worse. Two or three times the pooch also means two or three times the training. You can’t train them together because they’ll distract each other. For example, if you have a responsive dog that is submissive to a stubborn dog, training will be that much harder because the responsive dog is more likely

YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau
Retroactive Social Security Benefits I’ve been saving up questions involving the payment of retroactive Social Security retirement benefits. Here they are:
Q:
I will be age 70 in October. My plan was to start my retirement benefits at that time. But when I called Social Security in July, they gave me the option of taking six month’s worth of retroactive benefits starting in Januar y. What a great deal! I’m going to get a check for about $18,000! Why don’t they advertise this? Why don’t you talk about it in your column?
A:
I have talked about the retroactivity of Social Security benefits in past columns. And if you think about it, what happened with you and your Social Security isn’t that big a deal. I will explain. Any Social Security claim filed after age 66 comes with the possibility of up to six months of retroactive benefits. So when you filed your retirement claim in July, you were offered the opportunity to claim benefits all the way back to January if you wanted them. And apparently, you did. So the good news is you get a retroactive check for $18,000. But the bad news is that you will be getting a slightly smaller monthly benefit than you would have received if you started your benefits in October.

by Linda Thistle
The idea of Go Figure! is to arrive at the figures given at the bottom and right-hand columns of the diagram by following the arithmetic signs in the order they are given (that is, from left to right and top to bottom). Use only the numbers below the diagram to complete its blank squares and use each of the nine numbers only once.
Page 11
People who delay filing for Social Security beyond their full retirement age (age 66 for most people today) get a “delayed retirement bonus” of two-thirds of one percent for each month between age 66 and age 70 that they put off filing for Social Security. That comes out to 32 percent increase if you wait until age 70 to file. You will be 70 in October. But you have now started your benefits effective with last January. So your ongoing bonus will only be about 27 percent. And here is another way to look at this whole issue of retroactivity. If you wanted your benefits to begin in January, why didn’t you just file for them in January? You still would have gotten the 27 percent bonus added to your monthly checks. Maybe you just like the idea of getting that big fat retroactive check for $18,000. But if you ask me, it’s like you gave a free loan to the government. You let them hang onto your money for the past six months and now they are giving it back to you without paying you any interest. Still, an $18,000 check is pretty good. So enjoy spending it!
I thought I could even get six month’s worth of retroactive benefits. But the agent said I could only get paid back to May without explaining why. Can you explain?
A:
I sort of did in my answers to the previous questions. You were able to claim retroactive benefits only back to the month you turned 66 -- but not before. So you can get paid retroactively to May -- but nothing before that. To repeat: Retroactive benefits cannot be paid prior to your full retirement age month.
Q:
I called Social Security in May on my 63rd birthday to file for Social Security. I talked to a representative for a while. She was ready to take my claim, but I told her I wanted to think about it. I finally decided to go ahead with things and called in early July and filed my claim. I just got my first check, and it looks to be a lump sum check paying me back to May. I remember in a previous column you said there could be no retroactive benefits prior to age 66. So what happened to me?
Q:
I was 64 last March. I intended to file for my Social Security retirement benefits then, but I never got around to contacting my Social Security office because I ended up in the hospital with a pulmonar y embolism. I’ve been out and recovering for the past couple months. I’m now pretty much back to full strength. I called the Social Security people last week and told them I now wanted to sign up for my Social Security and that I wanted benefits retroactive to March. The agent told me I could not do that. She said my claim would have to be effective with this month. Don’t all Social Security claims come with up to six months of retroactive benefits?
A:
I purposely put your question here to make an important distinction about retroactive benefits. And that distinction is this: You technically did not get retroactive benefits. When you called the Social Security people in May about filing a retirement claim, they must have entered information about you into their computer system. And that set up what they call a “protective filing date.” In other words, you indicated an interest in filing for Social Security benefits in May. And when you finally decided to pull the trigger and actually sign up for them in July, they were able to use that May date as your filing date. So to repeat: You did not get retroactive benefits. You simply As I stated in the answer to the first got benefits beginning with the first month you question, retroactivity for retirement benefits is inquired about applying for your Social Security. limited to claims filed after full retirement age. M.D.
What’s the Best Age for Shingles Vaccine? DEAR DR. ROACH: You have written many times about chickenpox, shingles and the shingles vaccine. My question concerns the age at which one should get the vaccine. Most doctors and other sources recommend 60 and above; however, I am concerned about more and more younger people getting shingles, in their 50s and, in one instance, a woman in her 30s. Are these isolated cases? I am a 48-year-old female, and I did have chickenpox as a child. My husband’s insurance will pay for the vaccine at 50, and I intend to get it then. What are your thoughts? -- L.A.B. ANSWER: The vaccine is indicated by the Food and Drug Administration for those ages 50 and up, but advisory groups have recommended the vaccine to people over age 60, since the complication of post-herpetic neuralgia is more likely, lasts longer and can be more severe the older you get. It is reasonable to get the vaccine at 50 if you want, but it’s important to get it at age 60 or over if you haven’t already had it. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: A 95-year-old does not get enough blood flow to her lungs because she has a leaky heart valve. She is chronically short of breath after a small amount of exertion. Her leg strength is low, and she has to use a walker to safely get around. She lived with a smoker for a few decades, and he died decades ago, but she never smoked herself. Would supplemental oxygen help, by enriching the air in her lungs, thus allowing blood to get more oxygen from the lungs? -- Anon.
Readers: COPD typically causes shortness of breath, especially with activity. The booklet on COPD explains this progressive disease in detail. ANSWER: Supplemental oxygen can improve symptoms and make people live longer in a few specific instances. The most prevalent is probably people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) whose blood oxygen level is below 89 percent. Some other lung diseases also benefit from oxygen. In cases of poor blood flow due to heart reasons, including valvular disease, oxygen doesn’t help.

Helping Prevent Falls at Home DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: My 83-year-old mother lives alone and is fairly independent. However, she has fallen several times over the past year and we are concerned about that. I call her every day and stop there often, but we still worry about her injuring herself with no one there to help. Are there any extra precautions you could recommend that we should take that can help prevent this? -- Worried Daughter Dear Worried: Falls are a big concern for many elderly seniors and their families. Each year, 1-in-3 older Americans fall, making it the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries for those age 65 and older. But many falls can be prevented. Depending on what’s causing your mom to fall, here are some different tips that can help protect her. Encourage exercise: Weak leg muscles and poor balance are two of the biggest risk factors that cause seniors to fall. Tai chi, walking, water aerobics and strength training are all good for improving balance and strength, as are a number of simple balance exercises that she can do anytime like standing on one foot for 30 seconds then switching to the other foot, and walking heel-to-toe across the room. For additional balance and leg strengthening exercises the National Institute on Aging offers free exercise guides and a DVD that you can order at Go4Life.nia.nih.gov.

A Collectible You Can Bank On Q:
I read one of your recent columns regarding the Tootsie Roll bank. I’m in a similar situation, and I’m hoping you can shine some light. Attached is a picture of a bank that I have. I am 61, and I believe I’ve had it since I was about 10. The bank was originally a Nestle Chocolate Nesquik container. We always had Nesquik in the house, and once the container was empty we used it as a bank. The sides are cardboard, and the top and bottom are metal. There is a slit in the top for inserting coins. It can hold about $150 worth of change. It’s quite heavy when full, but it has never showed any sign of giving out. It’s really amazing that I have held onto it for some 50 years and that it’s still in great shape. A couple of years ago I sent a picture to Nestle Group inquiring about its histor y. The response I received said that no one had any record of the bank promoNestle was founded in Switzertion. I found land in 1867. that rather odd. Surely, there must be a record somewhere. Fuhgeddaboutit Here’s a conversation nobody really cares about: whether or not Alex Rodriguez deserves a plaque in the New York Yankees’ Memorial Park. A-rod, as we all know by now, has officially retired and was given his unconditional release, followed by an uncontrollable show of emotion by Yankee manager Joe Girardi. Girardi made the point that A-rod was, by any measure, the best third baseman in Yankee history. Naturally -- something that can never truly be said about A-rod -- heavily accented tongues started to wag at the Big Ball Orchard in the Bronx: “Do we get dis guy a plaque or what?” and “You gotta problem?” Well, fuhgeddaboutit. The Memorial Park used to be a very cool, telegenic part of the old Yankee Stadium before some architectural genius decided to hide it behind the center field wall. It has since been turned into a marketing tool for bobble heads, and if there was one thing the Yankees made clear about A-rod, it’s that they had no interest in marketing the man. How else can you explain pulling the plug on the guy when he was only four swings away from hitting 700 home runs? There is no conceivable chance that the three-time MVP -- twice with the Yankees -- will be elected into the Hall of Fame. A-rod, who was a (brief) natural talent, done did wrong, and everyone knows that he did ... full-year suspensions without pay have a funny way of planting such suggestions in one’s mind. Still, the facts show he put together one of the finest seasons of any Yankee ever with his 2007 campaign, entering into the rarified air of Gehrig and Ruth in '27, Dimaggio in '37, Mantle and Maris in '61 and Mattingly in 1985. That season he scored 142 runs, smashed 54 home runs, batted in 156 runners, stole 24 bases and put up a slash line of .314/.422/.645, garnering all-star, MVP and Silver Slugger nods. His 12 seasons for the Yankees definitely show him to be the best third baseman the team ever had from a statistical standpoint. My exgirlfriend had a huge crush on the guy. His records will always be in the books, the only place where fans are going to get to see any trace of the guy’s career.

If you don’t believe that Memorial Park is little more than a marketing tool, crack open not only the record books, but the roster of the Hall of the Fame. What if I told you that the Bronx Bombers had a center fielder who put together a slash line of .356/.414/.511 one season, averaging .325 and nearly .400 OBP over a 12-year career, retiring with the 40th highest batting average out of the tens of thousands who played the game? That guy, Earle Combs, aka “The Kentucky Colonel” is in the Hall of Fame, but you won’t see his name in Memorial Park. Nor will you find Hall of Famers Tony Lazzerri, Frank “Home Run” Baker, “Wee” Willie Keeler, Herb Pennock, Lefty Gomez, Waite Hoyt or Jack Chesbro. When the Yankees want to get serious about Memorial Park again, the ghost of those guys will be waiting to hear from the powers that be in the Bronx. In the meantime, A-rod certainly can wait his turn. * * * Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

An editor of Funk & Wagnalls dictionary commented that “the term widely publicized several months ago as applying to those who violate the prohibition laws, is fast fading to obscurity.” • But that prize-winning word did survive. In fact, it is a common term still used today to denote a petty criminal who disregards the rules and regulations followed by law-abiding citizens. • A man walked into a Providence, Rhode Island convenience store with a gun and demanded all the money in the till. The clerk handed over the cash. The robber then demanded the bottle of Scotch he saw on a shelf behind the counter. But the cashier refused to give it to him saying he didn't believe the robber was over 21. The robber insisted that he was, and pulled out his driver's license to prove it. The cashier studied it carefully, then handed him the Scotch. As soon as the robber left, the cashier called the police with the man's name and address. Police were waiting when the man arrived home.
