THE PERIODIC TABLE

• Elements on the periodic table are listed in order of the number of protons they have. This is known as the atomic number. There are currently 118 elements listed on the periodic table. Of these, 98 are found in nature. The rest are man-made, usually involving either a nuclear reactor or a particle accelerator to alter the composition.

• In the periodic table, the names of the elements are abbreviated using one or two letters. Some abbreviations make easy sense: hydrogen is H, oxygen is O, carbon is C, and cobalt is Co. Copper, which might sensibly be abbreviated “Co” is instead “Cu.” Why? Because elements that had Latin names were abbreviated according to those names. Copper in Latin is “cuprum”; gold is “aurum” (Au) and iron is “ferrum” (Fe).

• The poison is contained in the shell of the bean and it is water-soluble. It can be extracted and concentrated using the same methods that are used to extract cyanide from almonds. If a bean is chewed and then swallowed, water in the intestinal tract absorbs the poison. As few as four to six beans can be fatal. If the bean is swallowed whole, the poison is not absorbed. Because ricin is water-soluble and not oil-soluble, castor oil does not contain ricin. • Ricin kills by disrupting the ability of cells to synthesize protein, so the most basic level of cell metabolism is interrupted. • During World War II, the U.S. and Canada tried to use ricin in cluster bombs. • Ricin poisoning can be survived with supportive medical care, and a vaccination is also effective. • Bulgarian dissident Georgi Markov was killed by a ricin pellet as he waited for a bus in London in 1978. He was injected with a pellet embedded on the tip of an umbrella. He died days later, and the autopsy found a tiny sphere embedded in his thigh.

The Elements: (from page one) of all acids. ELEMENTAL NAMES

• The planet Uranus was discovered in 1781.In 1789 a scientist named the element uranium (U) after the planet despite the fact that there is no uranium on Uranus. Neptunium (Np) was named after Neptune, and plutonium (Pu) was named after Pluto. Polonium (Po), a radioctive element, was named for Marie Curie’s native Poland. Radium (Ra) was so named for the fact that it radiates and glows. • In 1949 when scientists working at the University of California Radiation Laboratory in Berkeley, California, discovered a new element, they named it “berkelium” after the city. They hoped that the chemical symbol would be “Bm” because the element had been such a “stinker” to find. However, the symbol for the new element became “Bk” instead. Berkelium is a radioactive metal which can only be produced inside nuclear reactors. Only a single gram of this element has been produced in the U.S. since 1967. BUILDING BLOCKS

• Our bodies are largely composed of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen. Phosphorus is needed in bones and in DNA. Sulphur is needed for proteins to form. Iron transports

Mercury is not allowed on airplanes by the TSA because it combines so readily with aluminum, which forms the basic structure of commercial aircraft. Aluminum is used because of its lightweight durability and resistence to rust and decay. However, when mercury comes into contact with aluminum it forms an amalgam which causes aluminum to corrode, just as iron does.

• Hydrogen is extremely flammable and oxygen is required for burning, but when you combine them you have water -- which puts out fires. Uranium is one of the heaviest elements, but when it decays, it produces helium, which is one of the lightest elements.

GETS NUG LEDGE NOW OF K On Earth, sulfuric acid does not exist in its natural form but must be manufactured. However, on Venus, there's lots of it. * The biggest polar bear ever recorded weighed a whopping 2,209 pounds -roughly the weight of 12 adult men. * Russian health authorities are very familiar with cold-weather injuries -- and fatalities. For instance, every winter, about 100 Russians are killed by falling icicles. * Noon and midnight are the only times that have their own names. The origin of the term “midnight” is obvious, since it occurs in the middle of the night, but how did 12 p.m. come to be called noon? The word itself is derived from the Latin word “nono,” which means “nine.” Still doesn’t make sense? Here’s how lexicographers trace the evolution of the word: If hours are counted from dawn -- roughly 6 a.m. -- instead of midnight, nine hours into the day would be 3 p.m., or midafternoon. Lacking accurate portable timepieces, ancient Romans used the term “nono” to refer to the midafternoon in a general sense. Over time, as the pronunciation of the word shifted to “noon,” the meaning of the word shifted to “midday.” Once society began to be run according to the accuracy of clocks, noon was pinpointed CLOSED as 12 p.m.

It exists naturally as a toxic pale yellow gas but it is extremely difficult to isolate due to its highly volatile, explosive properties. Many early scientists were seriously injured or killed while trying to work with fluorine. Its name comes from the Latin word “fluo” meaning “flow.”

• If you put chlorine and fluorine together in a vat made of nickel and heat the mixture to 536° F (280°C) the result is chlorine trifluoride. • When chlorine trifluoride is exposed to air, it boils. When exposed to water, it explodes. When it decomposes, it gives off deadly corrosive gasses. Things not normally thought of as flammable will burn explosively when in contact with chlorine trifluoride, even without any kind of ignition or accelerant, including glass, Teflon, asbestos, sand, rocks, bricks, and concrete. There are no effective methods of extinguishing the fire. • A chlorine trifluoride fire will continue to burn even without oxygen, and pouring water on the flames will instantly result in explosions and toxic gasses. In chemistry books listing its properties, you will find this entry: “Suitable extinguishing media: None.”

Grownups say the darndest things. Recently, I had the opportunity to speak with a director of one our nation’s many humane societies. I asked him what single factor more than any other drives people’s decision to abandon their dogs to a shelter. He said, unequivocally: behavioral problems. Then I asked him what he tells the people who want to adopt these troublemakers. He said, without flinching: I tell them the dog needs training. I then advised him to take his own advice. You see, he had called me because his 6-year-old Great Dane had been growling at his wife of three years and finally bit her in the face. When I asked him what took him so long to seek help, he said the darndest thing: “He doesn’t do it all the time!” Another grownup, this one female, called to inquire about her dog, who has bitten several of her family members and friends. I warned her that she’s going to get sued eventually, and she, too, said the darndest thing: “Not if he only bites my family and friends!” A woman who runs a rescue later called regarding someone who had returned a dog because it bit her. She wondered what went wrong. “Did the dog have a history of aggression,” I asked, to which that rescue worker replied: “Yes, but the woman said she’s good with dogs!” I’ve never met a dog lover who didn’t think they were good with dogs. The man with the 6-year-old 125-pound Rotweiller that growls at his kids believes he has a special touch with the canine crowd. “I taught him to sit and come. And whenever he growls, I say, ‘Bad dog. No.’” I asked, “Does he stop?” I think we all know the answer. People with smaller problems are even less likely to cry uncle. It’s too late to become a veterinarian, so instead they imagine themselves dog trainers. These folks call to complain that their dog barks at the mailman or at the phone, or that he chews the furniture or urinates on the carpet. They Casey's Corner: Turn to page 10

Waiting on First Check From Social Security

If you’ll be eligible for Social Security soon and are counting on having the money in hand on your birthday, beware. That’s likely not when you’ll receive it, especially not your first check. The month is broken down into thirds. If your birthday is somewhere between the first and the 10th, expect the money on the second Wednesday of the month. Between the 11th and 20th, you’ll get your money on the third Wednesday. After that, you get yours on the fourth Wednesday. Those who began receiving benefits before 1997, however, get their benefits on the first of the month. Starting in 2013, Social Security stopped sending out checks. I write a column similar to this one every January. But I don’t mind plagiarizing myself because it contains a very important message for people planning to retire in 2017. January is a critical month for the hundreds of thousands of potential Social Security beneficiaries who are reaching 66, their so-called full retirement age, in 2017. The important message: Most of them should consider filing for their benefits this month, even though they may not reach their retirement age until later in the year. Please note: This technique should not be employed by folks who plan to use the soon-todisappear maximizing strategy called “file and restrict” (still available to people turning 66 in 2017) because that procedure requires you to wait until age 66 or later before filing for benefits. If you want to delay filing for your own Social Security benefits until age 70 to get a 32 percent delayed retirement bonus, then you also should forgo the procedure discussed in this column. But if you are not interested in either of those strategies, and plan to start your benefits at 66 in 2017, then, as I said, you may want to file for benefits in January. The reason for this early filing timeframe has to do with some quirky and complicated features of Social Security’s earnings penalty provisions. Those provisions generally keep seniors who are still working off of Social Security’s rolls until they reach that magic “full retirement age.” The law essentially says if you are over 62 but under your full retirement age and are still working full time, you are not eligible for Social Security. Specifically, the rules require that the SSA deduct $1 from any retirement benefits you might be due for every $2 you earn over $16,920 in 2017. However, the rules say that once you reach your full retirement age, you are due full Social Security benefits, even if you are still working and no matter how much money you are making. We’ll follow an example. Let’s say Ed was born in July 1951, which means he’ll reach his full retirement age of 66 in July 2017. And let’s further say Ed generally makes about $80,000 per year, and he plans to continue working indefinitely. Based on the earnings penalty rules I briefly outlined above, Ed figures he must wait until July (his full retirement age) to begin collecting his Social Security benefits. As I said, at that magical point, the earnings penalty rules no longer apply and he can get his Social Security. And prior to that, he’s making

The mark you described was first used around 1937. Your berry dish would probably be worth $15 to $25.

Q:

This is a photo of the paper label on a porcelain figurine that I was given around 1958. The figurine is a young woman with two poodles on leashes. She stands about 6 inches tall and is wearing a white gown with applied flowers, and her hair is blond. She holds a gold chain leash in each hand. I bought a poodle puppy in the late 1950s and collected images of poodles. This is one of my favorites. Other than sentimental value, is my figurine worth anything?

ARDALT Corp. exported china from Japan.

Q:

I have enclosed a photo of a small ironstone bowl that belonged to my mother. She was born in Ireland in 1911 and immigrated to the United States in 1929. According to family legend, the bowl was part of a set that her family owned. All that is left is this shallow bowl, which is decorated with a dark blue and rust pattern and a gold-trimmed border. The body is white. It measures 5.5 inches in diameter, and it is in mint condition. There is a mark on the back with a crown and the words “Royal Cameron -- Alfred Meakin -- England.” What can you tell me about my bowl?

A:

The “AA” label was used by ARDALT Corp., a company of importers that established offices in New York City in 1945. It exported giftware, tableware and vases from Japan. The number on the porcelain is a design number. There is not a large market for ARDALT figurines of young females with poodles. Yours would probably fetch $25 to $35 in an antiques shop or online.

Good News. Anywhere. Anytime.

Say what you will about 2016, but if you thought it was boring you have got to get your head checked. It was a year of stunning achievements. Without question, the highlight being the Chicago Cubs finally winning a World Series, ending the Hack Wilson era. It was a year that saw LeBron James cement his all-time superstar legacy by bringing a championship back to Cleveland, a year that saw Peyton Manning leave on top. The Golden State Warriors did their best Seattle Mariners impression, setting the mark for the best regular season record, then not winning it all at the end. Villanova kept Philadelphia basketball front and center, taking the NCAA tournament. Alabama continues to roll in college football, and Penn State returned to the good graces of the game. The Pittsburgh Penguins only need one more for the thumb after winning their fourth Stanley Cup. Army beat Navy. There were individual achievements. Jaromir Jagr moved past Mark Messier for all-time points in the NHL. Andy Murray finally broke through to become the top-seeded player in men’s tennis. Kobe Bryant put up 60 points in his final game. Angelique Kerber and Serena Williams dominated woman’s tennis. Jimmie Johnson won his record-tying seventh NASCAR Sprint Cup title. Michael Phelps won his 23rd gold medal, Max Scherzer struck out 22 in a game, and Conor McGregor conquered the rest of the world. McGregor, who really helped propel the UFC to a higher ratings breakout after Rhonda Rousey’s hiatus from the sport, might well be considered the sportsman of the year if it weren’t for Joe Madden’s deft hand at managing the brilliant Theo Epstein Cubs. There were some events more recognized as someone’s loss than another’s win: Jordan Spieth’s collapse, allowing Danny Willet to add a green jacket to his wardrobe being the foremost example thereof. Tyson Fury, who acts like a loser, wobbled around the ring to beat Vladimir Klitschko for what used to be the well-respected heavyweight belt. Tom Brady, in one of the stupidest suspensions in NFL history, missed four games. (Way to market your stars, Goodell.) And then there were those who slipped this vale of tears. Giants like Ali, Arnie and Gordie are gone. Legends from the past century, their names will forever remain in the upper echelon of sporting statistics, men of exceeding valor both in their respective sports and away from the cheers of the crowd in gainful retirement. They will be missed, but this year, one of the greatest in recent sports history, will not be forgotten.

Sb IS FOR ANTIMONY

• Antimony is a silvery grey metallic element. Today it’s used as an alloy with lead and tin to make lead-acid batteries, solder, bullets, and cable. Long ago it was used as a laxative. Ingestion of Antimony pills causes violent digestive purging, but the pills pass through the digestive tract unchanged and could therefore be recovered and reused over and over again, giving it the name “the everlasting pill.” • Some people conjecture that Mozart died as a result of taking too much antimony to combat a fever. King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon painted his palace walls yellow using paint pigmented with a mixture of antimony and lead. Perhaps a result of this toxic mixture contributed to his later going insane. When antimony is mixed with hydrofluoric acid, the combination produces an acid that is billions of times stronger than stomach acid and will eat through everything but the Teflon-lined containers it’s stored in. 

Hips in a Barrel All Rights Reserved

During the early years of golf instruction, turning in a barrel became a popular image as to how the legs and hips were to move in a confined, rotary type fashion. Players like Bobby Jones seemed to exemplify this over turning image, at least in the backswing. Yet, Bobby and all the greats that followed him made one huge, significant change to that vivid barrel turning image….they broke through the barrel on the forward swing with demonstrative weight shift and footwork. Turning in a barrel may not be a terrible poor backswing image, but it implies never really shifting the weight during the motion. Instead, picture turning back and brushing up against the side of the barrel going back, then busting through the other side with the left knee and hip in the forward swing.

By using an alignment stick in the ground along the left leg at address, you should notice the leg leave the stick in the backswing, and then knock into it on the forwardPROOF swing. Trying ADVERTISING to stay glued to the stick or not ever touching it Finalresults Changes DUE: 5:00 in poor pivot motion.
