aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands. That’s writer Douglas Adams’ version, anyway. The point is, things usually are what they seem, notwithstanding physical evidence to the contrary. The key is to treat them as such. This cuts to the core of our relationships with our dogs. Understanding that your dog is a dog is the solid slab of concrete on which the rest of your relationship is built. Understanding what it means that your dog is a dog is our first priority as responsible dog owners. The vast majority of the people who call me for help with their dog problems are actually, themselves, the real problem. They refer to their dogs as their baby, their sweetheart, their cutie pie -- terms usually reserved for a romantic partner. And yes, women are more guilty than men of anthropomorphizing their dogs. Dog commands from these people sound a little something like: “Don’t do that.” “Don’t sniff there.” “Don’t you run away from me.” None of which is decipherable to a dog. This type of dog owner calls me because they’re convinced their dog is angry that they have to go to work in the morning, or he’s upset about their upcoming move to a new city, or he’s jealous because she’s started seeing someone new. Would you ask a horse whether he was content with his new stall? Why is it any different with a dog? When most people bring a dog home, he becomes a full-fledged member of the family. He’s lovingly welcomed into the nest, where he remains for about 15 years. As it should be. But he’s still a dog. A woman called me recently to discuss her dog, who sleeps in her bed. “Why does he growl when I move around?” she asked. Because he thinks it’s his bed. He’s no longer being treated as a dog, he’s now confused, and here comes the trouble. If you treat your dog like a dog, love your dog like a dog and train your dog to be the best dog he can be, you won’t confuse him -- or yourself.

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

Not Your Same Old Same Old Questions As my regular readers know, I sometimes worry that I am getting too repetitious -- giving the same answers to the same questions that I’ve been getting for the 20-plus years that I’ve been writing this column. Several readers have told me to stop fretting. They point out that more often than not, new readers are learning a lot. And even long-time readers can’t possibly remember all the rules and regulations associated with Social Security. So a little redundancy in the topics I cover is a good thing. Well, even with that good advice from my faithful readers, today’s column is one I don’t have to worry about. It’s filled with questions I’ve never covered before because the situations they involve are so unusual.

Q:

My ex-husband was a minister. He opted out of Social Security when he was in his 30s. He is now 62, and I heard he is tr ying to claim spousal benefits on my record. Can he do that?

A:

Well, he might be able to do that. But I sometimes hope there is a special place in purgatory for guys like him who pull off this little scheme! Let me explain. I will start out with some general rules. Ministers and certain other members of religious sects can opt out of paying into Social Security if they sign a statement indicating that they are morally opposed to paying taxes and receiving benefits from a government pension system like Social Security or a government health system like Medicare. And if they opt of Social Security and Medicare, they are usually out for good. I say usually because I’m treading on a bit of unfamiliar territory; these are Internal Revenue Service rules, not Social Security rules. In other words, ministers sign a form with the IRS to get out of paying Social Security and Medicare taxes. But ministers who opt out of Social Security still could collect benefits on a spouse’s Social Security record. And that leads me to this little story: During one of my stints while with the Social Security Administration, I worked in an office that had a church-sponsored training center for ministers. And part of my job was to do some outreach for the would-be ministers. Many of these guys would routinely tell me that they were opting out of Social Security “on moral grounds.” Then they’d sort of wink at me and say, “And someday when I’m old, I’ll just get Social Security and Medicare from my wife.” I held my tongue. But this attitude really bothered me! I mean, they were supposedly morally opposed to paying Social Security taxes, but they sure weren’t morally opposed to collecting Social Security benefits! Before I go on, I must admit my views are a bit jaundiced by those experiences earlier in my career. I’m sure there are many ministers and other religious members who truly are morally opposed to paying for or receiving government benefits and live a life true to those convictions. But lately, I have been hearing from more than a few ministers who are pushing Social Security age and who are regretting the decision they

Tidbits of Coachella Valley

made to opt out of Social Security and Medicare. And now they are looking for ways to get back in. Some of them are searching for jobs where they can pay into Social Security and Medicare for a long enough period of time to qualify for at least some benefits. And others, like your ex-husband, are look ing to cash in on a spouse’s (or ex-spouse’s) lifetime of Social Security and Medicare tax payments. Despite his alleged moral opposition to Social Security, I think he will be able to do it.

benefits from his company so that your husband could get a higher retirement pension. So when your husband dies, you will get widow’s benefits on his Social Security record -- assuming his benefit rate is higher than yours. For example, let’s say he is getting $2,000 per month from Social Security and your own benefit is $1,300. When he dies, you will keep getting $1,300, and then you will get $700 on his record to take you up to his $2,000 level.

had a stroke, it is generally not recommended to close the PFO. This surgery has risks, and these risks probably outweigh the small potential benefit. For people who have had a stroke, the risk of recurrent stroke from PFO is higher. One group has created a model (the RoPE score) to help predict the likelihood of recurrent stroke. This can help the clinician examine the benefits of surgical repair of the PFO. Surgery is most likely to benefit younger people without traditional risk factors for stroke.

Does Hole on Heart Increase Stroke Risk?

***

DEAR DR. ROACH: Articles on strokes or TIAs rarely mention that they can be caused by a congenital heart defect. I had a family member with a patent foramen ovale, found at age 54, after he’d had several strokes. He had surgery to repair it and has been well ever since. I would like to know why a PFO isn’t often mentioned or considered. When I see an obituary for a young person who died suddenly, I wonder if there was an undiagnosed hole in the person’s heart. One in 6 people has a hole in the heart; that is a high percentage. I think the public should be educated and made aware of this congenital condition. -- J.R.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I heard that letting vinegar touch your skin causes arthritis. Is there any danger in using vinegar as a cleaning agent? -- N.J.A. ANSWER: I often get asked whether apple cider vinegar cures arthritis (it doesn’t) or can help relieve symptoms (it might, but there is no good evidence that it does), but I have never heard anyone ask about vinegar touching the skin causing internal problems. Vinegar is a mild acid (most are about 5 percent acetic acid), which normally isn’t particularly irritating to the skin, and shouldn’t be absorbed. Even if it were, acetic acid is found in the body (it’s an important molecule in several metabolic pathways), and your body can use it as an energy source. There is no reason to be concerned about being exposed to household vinegar.

VETERANS  POST  by Freddie Groves

Still Seeking Records 45 Years After Fire In July 1973 a fire broke out in the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis. By the time it was finally put out four days later, with the help of firefighters from 42 different jurisdictions, as many as 18 million personnel files were lost, accounting for 80 percent of the Army’s records and 75 percent of the Air Force’s holdings. Records that weren’t burned were soaked by millions of gallons of water. Employees were able to save 6 million records in that soggy condition. A federal bulletin went out ordering other agencies to cease disposing of any records that might help re-create the lost files. But reconstructing so much information, from military hospitals, Selective Service records, pay vouchers and Department of Veterans Affairs claims, can’t replace those millions of lost records.

Another popular benefit available to all eligible veterans buried in either a national or private cemetery is a military funeral honors ceremony. This includes an honor guard detail of at least two uniformed military persons, folding and presenting the U.S. burial flag to the veteran’s survivors, and the playing of Taps by a bugler or an electronic recording. The funeral provider you choose will be able to assist you with all VA burial requests. Depending on what you want, certain forms may need to be completed which are always better to be done in advance. For a complete rundown of burial and memorial benefits, eligibility details and required forms, visit www.cem.va.gov or call 800-8271000.

Bushberry Pattern Was Introduced in 1948 Q:

This is a photo of a pottery vase that I bought at a yard sale in the 1970s for $5. It is around 15 inches tall and is decorated with a mattebrown glaze. The leaves and berries are embossed against a ribbed background. On the bottom are the words and numbers “Roseville -U.S.A. -- 40 -- 15.” I don’t know anything about antiques and just bought it because I liked Roseville Pottery introduced its it. A friend “Bushberry” pattern in 1948. who collects antiques told me it might be worth more than I paid for it. I hope you can provide some information about its age, maker and value.

tinued to be in demand. Your vase is an example of Roseville’s “Bushberry” pattern. It was introduced in 1948. The number “40” is the design number, and “15” is the height. The pattern was available in at least 60 different pieces that included vases, candleholders, pitchers and jardinieres. Bushberry pottery was hand-painted and in green, blue, orange and brown matte-glazed finishes. Roseville Pottery slid into a decline in both design and demand in the late 1940s and closed around 1954. Your vase is very collectible and would probably fetch $150 to $300 in antiques shops or on the internet.

Hanukkah (from page 3) or “fried.” Israeli folklore states that when Adam and Eve were ejected from the Garden of Eden, God cheered them up with sufganiyot. The treats certainly cheer up today’s residents of Israel – they consume more than 18 million jelly doughnuts in the weeks around Hanukkah. • The game of dreidel is a popular one during Hanukkah. The Hebrew word for dreidel is “sevivon,” which translates “to turn around.” The game piece is a small, flat-sided top that spins on a stem. Each side is marked with a different Hebrew letter -- N, G, H, and S, which stand for Nun, Gadol, Haya, and Sham, meaning “A great miracle happened there.” Each player has tokens to be placed in or removed from the “pot.” A spin landing on “N,” which means “nothing,” denotes that the player does nothing. Players that spin a “G,” which translates “everything,” takes the entire pot. An “H,” or “half,” takes half the pot, while a spin of “S,” meaning “put in,” requires the player to add a token to the pot. • Members of the South Palm Beach community of Jewish people helped create the world’s most valuable dreidel, one valued at $14,000. In 2015, members donated precious and gems to fashion the dreidel, which has a diamond foundation and spins on the diamond’s point. • Hanukkah is the only Jewish festival not mentioned by name in the Hebrew Bible, although a “feast of dedication” is mentioned in the book of John, perhaps a reference to the celebration of Hanukkah. The story of Hanukkah is told in the books of Maccabees in the Catholic Bible. ‪

Deadly Headly

STAN SMITH’S TENNIS CLASS

There are several movements in the very beginning of the golf swing that can be quite detrimental to the success of the rest of the swing. One of these deadly moves is when the head moves toward the target as a result of poor body movement or weight shift. As a matter of fact, no great player in the history of golf has ever moved their head toward the target in the takeaway. The takeaway should be a culmination of club, arm, shoulder, and body movements away from the target. The head does not have to move more than a few inches, but it should never go against the grain of the club and arm movement. To get a better awareness of your own takeaway, place something on the ground in front of you where it aligns with the shadow of your head (left ear preferred). Watch your shadow to see that you don’t move toward the target!
