blood-letting, believing that sickness was caused by imbalance of the body’s fluids. Draining their blood, they reasoned, would aid in their recovery.
George Washington's death, in fact, was hastened by excessive bloodletting. After riding his horse all night through a cold, wet storm, he came down with what was probably strep throat. His team of three top physicians bled him four times within a 12-hour period, withdrawing about 2.5 quarts, which was nearly half of his blood supply. This extreme blood loss weakened him to the point of death. He likely would have recovered given simple bedrest and supportive care.

hoping to turn enough of a profit to get him out of the hole he clearly knew he was digging for himself. • When a Boston financial writer wrote an article stating that Ponzi’s financial scheme was impossible, Ponzi sued for libel and won a $500,000 settlement, quashing further attempts to expose him as a fraud. When another newspaper wrote a favorable article about Ponzi’s ability to guarantee a 50% return on investment after only 45 days, the article appeared next to a local bank’s ad promising a 5% return annually. Throngs of hopeful people crowded into Ponzi’s office to invest.

• In 1919, Charles Ponzi decided this would be a good way to turn a profit: buy IRCs low, sell high. Explaining this to friends, he received small investments, and doubled those investments in 90 days. Word spread.
• Still, suspicious investigative reporters and state officials began seriously looking into the matter. One of those investigators revealed that Ponzi was not investing his own money in his own company. Someone else calculated that in order to pay off all of his investors, Ponzi would have to monetize approximately $160 million IRCs, when there were only 27,000 in circulation. • The District Attorney ordered an audit. A newspaper article revealed that whereas Ponzi claimed he was $7 million in the black, he was actually $7 million in the red. • There was an immediate run on Ponzi’s company. The Bank Commissioner immediately seized the Hanover Trust Bank, halting Ponzi’s last-ditch efforts to cover all his debt using bank funds. Ponzi was ruined. He surrendered to federal authorities.
• In 1920, Ponzi set up his own company and sold stock. Transfusions
(from page one)
when blood was added to a sick or injured person instead of draining it from their system. • In the early 1800s, London obstetrician James Bundell worried about the number of women who died of blood loss after giving birth. He experimented with blood transfusions and made several important discoveries: First, he found that only human blood should be transfused into other humans, and not the blood from animals. Second, he concluded that blood transfusions did not cure any illness. Third, he learned that transfusing blood into dead patients would not revive them. But with this knowledge, Blundell never understood why some transfusions were successful while others failed, often ending in death. • Austrian pathologist Karl Landsteiner researched this subject to discover why blood transfusions would sometimes kill the recipient, while other times it would save them. In 1901 he took blood samples from one random group of people and added them to blood samples drawn from another random group. Paring them under a microscope he observed that sometimes the red cells appeared to clump together, sometimes they burst, while other times nothing happened at all. Landsteiner first thought that some blood was “sick” and other blood was “healthy” but further research showed this wasn't the case.
cell called hemoglobin collects oxygen in the lungs, delivers it to the body’s cells, and then carries carbon dioxide away, to be exhaled through the lungs. But there are different types of red blood cells, determined by different types of proteins that adhere to the outer surface of the flattened donut like, if you will, different types of sprinkles: Type A blood has certain kinds of proteins that stick to the outside of the red blood cells, while Type B blood has other kinds of proteins that also stick to the cells. If a person with Type A blood receives Type B blood, or vice-versa, in a transfusion, it triggers an immune response. • Landsteiner thought Type C blood had a third kind of protein adhering to the red blood cells, but later found it has no proteins attched to it at all—it’s a flattened donut without any sprinkles.

until it was discovered that an injection of a blood product called Rh immune globulin would prevent problems. The discovery of the Rh factor brought the number of blood types to eight.

• Landsteiner also discovered that he could determine a person’s blood type from a single drop of dried blood, laying the groundwork for forensic science. Later it was found that blood types are inherited from parents in predictable patterns, leading to the ability to find out who the father of a child was likely to be. Landsteiner won the Nobel Prize for his work.

Everyday CHEAPSKATE
®
by Mary Hunt
By Samantha Weaver
* It was American actress, screenwriter and notorious sex symbol Mae West who made the following sage observation: “You only live once. But if you do it right, once is enough.” * The world’s highest tides are found in the Bay of Fundy, located in Nova Scotia, Canada. There, the difference between high and low tides can be as much as 50 feet. * If you’re a blood donor, you’re part of a significant minority. In the United States, less than 5 percent of the population donates blood every year. * The first sound recording ever made was created in 1877 by Thomas Edison. It was a musical selection: “Mary Had a Little Lamb.”

The Most Critical 6 Months in a College Grad’s Life Graduating from college is one of life’s most thrilling events. Finishing my degree, walk® ing the aisle and receiving a fancy document in a leather-bound case remains one of the high by Mary Hunt points of my life. Unfortunately, I still had a lot to learn about managing finances. I knew nothing, and worse, wasn’t aware that I knew nothing. What was there to know, anyway? Sadly, I am not alone. Today’s graduates are smart but generally financially ignorant. For college graduates gearing up to enter the real world, I offer the following for starting off on the right financial foot.
Everyday CHEAPSKATE
MAKE PAYMENTS You need to immediately begin paying back your student loans, whether a little or a lot. Do not luxuriate in the six-month grace period. That is not some kind of gift. Interest is accruing every day (unless you have subsidized loans, which almost no one has these days). Your debt is growing because the interest you owe but are not paying is being added to your principal balance. AUTOSAVE Even though in debt, you need to save money. You cannot continue to live on credit. I am a big fan of any kind of auto pay or auto save. When you set this up, you eliminate the need to make a decision every payday. “Should I save money this week or go to a movie?” “Should I save this week or get those really cute shoes that are finally on sale?!” But if you are auto-saving, even $25 a week, you’ve eliminated that irritating decision of whether to save or not. You’re on autopilot, and that’s a nice way to roll. And in closing ... Finally, please accept my heartfelt congratulations on a job well done. You made it -- not to the finish line but to the starting gate! * * *
Dear Graduating Class of 2019: The decisions and choices you make in the first six months after graduation have the power to set the course of your life, for good or bad. Of course, you’ve been a poor starving student long enough. You deserve a new car. And certainly, you need a better apartment. And some decent clothes. Oh, and who could possibly deny you Mary invites questions, comments and tips * Are you a cacographer? When exposed to wind and rain, most resin breaks down over time, flaking off the tree and turning to dust. You are correct: Actress Sophia Bush isn’t returning to the hit series. She chose to depart, and her character left to take a job with the FBI. Bush has a development deal with 20th Century Fox TV that could have her starring in another series soon, but in the meantime, she has the upcoming film “Hard Luck Love Song,” with Dermot Mulroney. Bush says she chose to leave “Chicago P.D.” due to intolerable Sophia Bush conditions on the set. On Dax Shepard’s podcast “Armchair Expert,” she said they often had to film scenes for hours in below-freezing temperatures in Chicago and that people on the set were getting sick. Bush also allegedly was verbally abused on the set: “When someone assaults you in a roomful people, and everyone literally looks away ... and n of you’re the one woman in the room, and every man who’s twice your size doesn’t do something, you go, ‘Oh, that wasn’t worth defending? When the new season begins in October, the show will have moved from Bravo to the Ovation channel and will use a rotation of hosts interviewing actors about their craft. Ovation executive Scott Woodward said America’s arts television network is “perfect” as the new home for “Inside the Actors Studio.” “We plan to honor the legacy of James Lipton’s master class while also exploring the craft with eclectic, talented guests,” he said. Students of Pace University’s Actors Studio MFA program will once again be audience members. I still remember seeing a young Bradley Cooper watching Lipton interview his guests. Cooper would one day be a guest himself on the show as

Definitely, yes. Renova is the Desert Solar Specialist – not just with panels that perform the best in the heat, but with techniques that help ensure the reliability and longevity of your system, unlike companies from out of the area who aren’t familiar with the special needs in the desert, or companies that don’t spend the extra money or time to correctly install for the heat extremes we have here.

Dog Talk with Uncle Matty By Matthew Margolis
Creators News Service
Teach, Don’t Bully It is a well-known moral and mathematical fact that two wrongs don’t equal a right. Lesser known is the surprising notion that one doesn’t, either. The following letter from a reader culminates with the explosive assertion of a single disturbing wrong: “I just got this dog from the pound. She eats well and sleeps with me, and she’s very intelligent. But she keeps leaving me little poops and puddles in the house. I leave the door open and she still poops in the house, right by an open door. She is 4 years old or so, and the pound has no history on her. I have not beaten her yet, but I am about to.” Brute force is never an effective teaching tool. Most people, if told their child’s eye had been blackened not by a bully but by his English teacher because of his inability to spell, would run to the nearest happy hour full of ACLU lawyers and scream “civil rights violation! Sic 'em!” And the teacher’s defense would be embarrassingly feeble: “No, I never taught him how to spell, but I left the dictionary right there on his desk.” Dogs are not born housebroken. It is not a matter of better breeding, bad genes or big bucks. To date, with all that modern technology affords we humans and our canine counterparts, no breeder has been able to deliver into the world an inherently potty-trained dog. Or child. If you want your dog to perform his bodily functions out of doors, you have to let him know that. This is done through training. Training is essentially the creation of a shared, albeit limited, language between man and beast. The good news is that housebreaking is easy to achieve and takes less than a week to accomplish. The bad news is that a lot of people would prefer not to make even that minimal effort. Unfortunately, the headache that results packs enough of a wallop to lead a person down the wrong path -- toward abuse, squalor and abandonment. The basics of housebreaking boil down to the regulation of three components: food, water and walks. If you and your pooch are steadfast in your adherence to what I call the Feed-Water-Walk Casey's Corner: Turn to page 10

If you see an ad on TV about free medical equipment you can get because you’re on Medicare, write down the information and give it to your doctor. Ask whether that device or service is something you really need. If it is, and if it’s something approved by Medicare, you can still get it for free. In fact, whether it’s for free medical equipment, or insurance coverage, or for any reason, if it’s related to Medicare, all the scammers really want is your Medicare number.

YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau
You Say Tomato; I Say Tomahto I’ve learned over the years that lots of people get hung up on the lexicon of Social Security. I will use a Social Security-related word or phrase in a column without giving it too much thought. And the next thing I know, there are emails in my inbox taking me to task for supposedly getting or saying something wrong. Here are a few examples:
Q:
I notice that when you discuss the Social Security deductions from people’s paychecks, you always refer to them as Social Security “taxes.” But I think if you do your homework and check out the histor y of the law, you will learn that the proper term is “contributions.” Would you please start using the right language?
A:
Whether to call Social Security payroll deductions “taxes” or “contributions” has been debated for decades. But I can tell you this. In the 20 years I’ve been writing this column, you are the very first person to suggest I say “contributions.” Usually, it’s just the opposite. For example, every time I use that term in my column, I get dozens of angry emails from people saying some version of this: “How can you possibly call the Social Security tax payments. I am making a contribution? I’m not contributing anything. I am being forced into paying this tax!” That’s why I shy away from the controversy and call it either a “tax” or a “payroll deduction.”
plished through a benefit formula that is skewed to give people on the lower rungs of the economic ladder a slight boost up that ladder when they retire. They don’t get higher benefits, per se. But as a percentage of what they put into the program via their premiums (I mean, taxes), they get a better deal in terms of the monthly Social Security benefit checks they get. So, people getting Social Security checks are getting monthly “benefits” and it is entirely appropriate to refer to them as “beneficiaries.” I’ve got immediate neighbors on either side of me, both of whom have been getting Social Security checks TUES., 2485-year-old And APRIL I have an I have a huge problem when you for quite a few years now. neighbor just up thestreet whose husband recently Pri a “benefit” call Social Security payments Please reviewand carefully. your Social Security benefits after full retirement age you get an extra two-thirds of 1 percent credit added to your Social Security checks. If you wait until age 70 to file, that comes out to 32 percent in additional benefits. I will occasionally say you get a 32 percent bonus. And you are right. I suppose that is the wrong term. I could call them what they are, delayed retirement credits. Or maybe I could just say extra credits. But if I occasionally slip up and use the term “bonus,” I’ve got a hunch that 99 percent of the people reading this column would know what I mean.

A:
You are right, sort of. Actually, in the original law passed in 1935, it was referred to as Old Age and Survivors Insurance, or OASI. (Although the law itself was called “The Social Security Act.”) The disability program wasn’t added until the 1950s, and then it became Old Age Survivors and Disability Insurance. But I will bet you $50 that if you go up to 100 people and ask them what OASDI is, fewer than five of them will know what it means. In most newspapers around the country, this column is called “Social Security and You.” I just don’t think it would have the same snap if it were called “OASDI and You.”
Q:
I wish you would stop calling the extra benefits someone gets for waiting until 70 to start their Social Security a bonus. The term “bonus” implies something extra. It is essentially a gift or a reward. People who wait until age 70 to claim benefits have worked and earned the extra money they get. Call it something else, but don’t call it a bonus!
A:
The legal term for what you are talking about is a “delayed retirement credit.” The law says that for each month you delay starting

Like almost ever yone else, you continue to misname Social Security. That is not the official name for the program. According to the law, it is the Old Age Sur vivors and Disability Insurance program, or OASDI. I think you would be doing your readers a service if you start calling it what it is.

ANSWER: Your best bet is not to get stung in the first place, which for you means simply not stepping barefoot where bees might be. It’s particularly important for you, as local reactions to bee stings do tend to get worse over time. Fortunately, they do not usually predict the life-threatening anaphylactic reaction. Once stung by a bee, remove the stinger, within seconds if possible, since the venom can continue to be released for several seconds. The local reaction usually lasts less than a day in most people, but it can last up to five days.

financial troubles occurred; the pottery went into receivership and was taken over by the Edmund Yorke family. “The Alhambra” is the name of the pattern, and the number “739062” shows that the pattern was registered with the British government in 1928. Although the registry date is 1928, it doesn’t necessarily mean the teapot was made in 1928: It is the date when the design was registered.

We are enclosing a photo of a dessert set that has been in the family for three generations. My husband’s mother gave it to us, and she got it from her mother-in-law. The set is ver y thin china and consists of a cake plate, six cups, saucers and dessert plates. Each piece is decorated with orange and blue flowers, trimmed in gold and marked “Germany.” It is in perfect condition and appears to be hand painted. We have been married for 67 years and are now downsizing. We would appreciate knowing the value of our set along with its histor y, as we plan to pass it on to our children.
The Moorish Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain, was the inspiration for the design. The name Alhambra appears to be popular with many pottery and porcelain factories from the 1800s to the present, all with different designs. Your circa 1930 teapot would probably be worth $75 to $125. * * *

• On May 10, 1877, President Rutherford B. Hayes has the White House’s first telephone installed, although he rarely received phone calls. In fact, the Treasury Department possessed the only other direct phone line to the White House at that time. The White House phone number was “1.” • On May 9, 1926, according to their claims, American polar explorer Richard E. Byrd and pilot Floyd Bennett fly over the North Pole in a triple-engine Fokker monoplane. However, the discovery in 1996 of Byrd’s diary suggests they may have turned back short of the pole because of an oil leak. • On May 12, 1949, an early crisis of the Cold War comes to an end when the Soviet Union lifts its 11-month blockade of West Berlin. The blockade had been broken by a massive U.S.-British airlift of supplies to West Berlin’s 2 million citizens. • On May 6, 1954, in Oxford, England, 25-year-old medical student Roger Bannister cracks track and field’s most notorious barrier: the four-minute mile. Bannister won the mile race with a time of 3:59.4. • On May 8, 1973, in South Dakota, armed members of the American Indian Movement surrender to federal authorities, ending their 71-day siege of Wounded Knee, site of the infamous massacre of 300 Sioux by the U.S. 7th Cavalry in 1890. • On May 11, 1988, Kim Philby, a former British intelligence officer and double agent for the Soviet Union, dies in Moscow. Philby was perhaps the most famous of a group of British government officials who spied for Russia from the 1930s to the 1950s.

A:
Hand-painted porcelain dessert sets were very popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Around this time, many similar sets decorated with poppies were made in Germany, France and Japan. Without a manufacturer’s mark, it can be difficult to identify the maker. Your set was made in the early 1900s and would probably be worth $225 to $375. *** I have enclosed the mark that is on the bottom of an antique teapot I have. It is decorated with rust, blue and cream-colored flowers and trimmed in gold. It was given to my grandmother as a wedding gift sometime in 1930. My daughter would like to have it, and I would like to provide her with more information about its maker, vintage and value.

blood type to the blood type of the blood donor. Blood typing became common in the 1920s.
• As bloodlines have mixed through centuries of generations, it has had an impact on human disease resistance. For example, cells infected with malaria don’t stick well to Type O red blood cells, so people who have Type O blood are less affected by malaria and have better odds of surviving in order to pass on their blood type to their children. Similarly, people with Type AB blood are more resistant to cholera. Gradually entire populations where cholera was common began to have largely Type AB blood, while people who lived in malaria-prone areas had mainly Type O blood.
