• The use of proper etiquette can be traced back as far as biblical times, with proverbs advising a person to “Eat as it becometh a man, and devour not, lest thou be hated.” Ancient leaders advised against licking one’s fingers and belching after a good meal, drinking wine in one gulp, and being free of offensive body odor. • Greed was considered the basis of all evil and was to be guarded against, and society was advised instead to cultivate the practice of kindness and generosity. • Medieval knights were held to very strict rules of conduct, including “gallantry and courtesy to women” and respect for and defense of the weak.

• Amy Vanderbilt published her book of etiquette in 1952. A distant cousin of the famous railroad magnate Vanderbilt family, Amy had worked in advertising and public relations, while doing five years of research for her book of manners. She also hosted a 1950s television program, “It’s in Good Taste,” and a radio show “The Right Thing to Do.” Her book offered the standard of conduct for everything from how to write thank-you notes, including which stationery to use, to hosting a party to planning a wedding. Her book is still in print after many revisions.

essays instructed people not to eat with mouths open or sneak sideways glances at others. They were encouraged to engage in self-restraint and bodily control, both of which were described as “civilizing processes.” • In the 1730s, Britain’s Lord Chesterfield first used the word “etiquette” in a series of 400 letters written to his son on the “art of becoming a man of the world and a gentleman.” These letters instructed the boy on good breeding and social graces as a method of social status and advancement.

diners asks you to pass the salt, you should always pass both the salt and pepper. They’re a pair that should be kept together in case the person asking wants them both. It’s also a cardinal rule to always pass to the right, so the request should be made to the person on your left (Tidbits regrets that we're not entirely sure what to do if the salt is close to the person to your right, while to your left it's all the way down at the end of the table).

The tradition of a man positioning himself on the All Rights Reserved curbside when walking with a woman dates back to horse and buggy days, when it was the duty of the man to protect the woman from being splashed by either the horse or the buggy wheels. hands if you are not cleaning these filters regularly. I take them to a sink of warm, soapy (blue Dawn) water and give them a good and thorough bath. I wash both the foam and felt filters, being especially careful to not damage those made of felt. (NOTE: The manufacturer does not recommend washing the felt filter. I carefully hand-wash and have done so many times with no problem. Do this at your own risk.) Once cleaned and rinsed, the filter(s) may or may not return to their new white appearance. But don’t worry. As long as they are not torn, broken or otherwise disintegrated, they’ll be just fine, even if they remain stained. Do not return the filter(s) to the vacuum at this point. They must be completely dry first. Otherwise prepare for mildew and mold -- the last thing you ever want growing inside a vacuum. When everything is clean and dry, replace the filters and canister. Sharkie will be so happy he’ll return the favor with an even more exceptional cleaning job the next time you vacuum. Filters will eventually wear out, and you can easily replace them. Just make sure you are purchasing the correct filters for your particular Shark model.

How to Clean a Shark Vacuum and Its Filters
By Samantha Weaver
* It was industrialist Andrew Carnegie, who was born into a poor Scottish family and emigrated to the United States as a teen, who made the following sage observation: “There is not such a cradle of democracy upon the earth as the Free Public Library, this republic of letters, where neither rank, office, nor wealth receives the slightest consideration.”
You know by now just how much I love my Shark vacuum cleaner. And given my readers’ letters and comments, I know that many of ® you have Sharkies, too. Marymessages. Hunt I lovebyyour They make me smile because I understand the range of emotions that come from using a Shark vacuum for the first time -- from amazement to flat-out embarrassment. Where on Earth did all of this dirt and debris come from? I can’t believe what’s been lurking in my carpet! With all of the miles I’ve put on my numerous Shark vacs over the years, I’ve never had one fail. And while the manufacturer boasts that Sharks never lose suction, that is predicated on regularly cleaning their canister, filters and rotating brush. It’s right there in the owner manual, which most of us don’t think to read until we have a problem. You need to clean your Shark every three months to keep it working at top efficiency -- more often with heavy use. It’s easy. Signs that Sharkie needs a bath: -- Loss of suction. -- Dirt being left behind. -- Sounds weird, like Sharkie is gasping for air. -- An unpleasant, dirty odor.

* You might be surprised to learn that the United States Department of Commerce has designated approximately 30 houses across the country as authentic haunted houses. * Despite the fact that 95 percent of the world uses the metric system of measurement, we in the United States still stubbornly cling to the archaic units of measurement derived from the old British Imperial system. This hodgepodge ranges from the mile (originally the distance a Roman soldier could march in 1,000 double steps) to the foot (originally the length of Emperor Charlemagne’s foot, later “standardized” to the length of 35 barleycorns laid end to end) to a yard (the distance between King Henry I’s nose to his extended fingertips) to an inch (the length from the tip to the first joint of a man’s thumb).

ROTATING BRUSH Next, lay the vacuum on the floor so you can see the rotating brush. You may want to place a bag or towel underneath to catch the debris and dirt you’re about to release. More than likely you will see strings, hair and other material wrapped around the brush. This is normal. I use scissors to cut through whatever has wound itself around the brush. That makes it easy to clean up the brush. You may have to pull and tug a bit, but it will come off. Dog Talk with Uncle Matty By Matthew Margolis
Creators News Service
Protection ... or Aggression in Sheep’s Clothing? A lot of people say they got a dog for protection. But do those people know the difference between protection and aggression? Barking at anyone who comes into your yard or house is not protection. Charging the mailman is not protection. Snarling at passers-by from that coveted spot at the front window is not protection. Growling at or biting family members and friends is certainly not protection. So what is? A protection dog will recognize a potentially life-threatening situation and act to prevent it. This kind of recognition requires training to develop, as does the dog’s ability to respond reliably and appropriately to the situation. Anything less is simply aggression. Aggression is an overreaction. It’s a form of imbalance. An aggressive dog responds to stimuli, however innocuous, without reason or logic. He’s irrational, out of control, unpredictable and even dangerous. I recently spoke with a couple whose dog bit their upstairs neighbor’s child. Their response? “He didn’t mean it. He was protecting our son.” From what? The playfulness of another kid? The dog overreacted. He wasn’t picking up on a life-threatening situation. He misread the signs, and his response was grossly inappropriate. With a dog like this, the question becomes: How do you prevent unpredictable behavior? “He doesn’t do it all the time.” I hear this all the time. It just underscores the challenge of making safe an unpredictable dog. If he did it all the time, it would be predictable, and you could, in that case, desensitize the animal to those tried-and-true triggers. “He doesn’t do it all the time” is by no means a good thing. When it comes to aggressive behavior, that he does it at all should be cause to call in a professional. If you want a protection dog, there are plenty of specialty trainers who can help you find Casey's Corner: Turn to page 10

They were told that customer privacy was more important than mere suspicions. Now authorized bank employees, specially trained to identify questionable activities, will have immunity, or freedom from a lawsuit for stepping in to investigate such matters.
SENIOR NEWS LINE by Matilda Charles © King Features Synd., Inc.
Senior$afe Act Lets Banks Call the Cops Congress took a big step last year to protect our financial interests. The Senior$afe Act gives immunity to bank employees who contact authorities if they suspect that one of their senior customers may be getting scammed. It’s not quite that simple, but that’s the end result. Too often when seniors are being scammed they call or go to their bank to ask about transferring or withdrawing large sums of money and wiring it to others. If the bank employee notices that this is an unusual request for their senior customer, they can start an alert that may prevent the customer from being scammed out of a large sum of money.

the right one for your needs. Begin by deciding what your needs are -- watchdog, deterrent dog, varying degrees of personal protection. You might be surprised by what you find when doing your research. A trained Yorkie can make an excellent alarm system if you discover that’s all you really need. But if the cold, hard facts determine that you have an aggressive dog, don’t dress it up in sheep’s clothing. Don’t wait until someone gets hurt. Aggressive behavior doesn’t mean a death sentence for the dog, and it doesn’t mean you’re a bad person. In my experience, 95 percent of aggressive dogs can be rehabilitated and their behavior controlled to allow for a good and safe existence in the right environment. Whereas, calling aggression “protection” will only get you trouble. Woof!
And it’s not just banks. Other types of financial institutions will also be given this ability to help. Our investment advisers, brokers, insurance agents, credit unions and others can also train and designate certain employees to act on our behalf. In return, the institution itself will also have legal immunity for the disclosure of private information to law enforcement.
That’s not to say it’s now required that banks and other institutions call investigators if they suspect a senior is being scammed. YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau
Gloom, But No Doom, for Social Security In the spring each year, flowers and trees bloom. And so do gloom and doom stories about the future of Social Security. And that’s because in April of each year, the Social Security board of trustees is required to issue a report on the status of the Social Security trust funds. (They also issue a status report on Medicare. But this is a column about Social Security, so that is the only report I will cover today.) And although there is some gloom associated with the trustee’s report, there is no reason for doom. This year, the report says Social Security will go belly up in 2035. Well, that’s what the headlines say. An in-depth reading of the trustees’ findings show that if no changes are made to Social Security by 2035, the trust funds will be depleted, and the incoming payroll taxes will only be enough to cover about 75 percent of promised benefits. So Social Security would not be bankrupt in 2035, but the system would certainly be in some serious doodoo! (That’s the gloomy part of the story.) So why am I not concerned? Because we’ve been down this road before. If you are a typical baby boomer, you were into “sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll” in the ‘60s and ‘70s. But in those same years, I was a nerd, recently hired by the Social Security Administration. And I very quickly became interested in the history of Social Security legislation. I learned then what I still know today: Social Security has been reformed many times in its long history. And more often than not, major reforms don’t happen until politicians’ backs are up against the wall. Why does Congress wait so long to do anything? Because though Social Security reform choices are rather obvious, they are politically difficult to implement. To be more precise, Social Security reform almost always means two things are going to happen: Somebody’s tax is going to go up, and somebody’s benefit is going to get cut. Congress just doesn’t like to do either. Still, they inevitably act responsibly and do the right thing. For example, back in the late 1970s, Social Security was in much more dire straits than it is in today. At that time, the trustee’s report was predicting that the system was just five years away from meltdown. One of the first major things Ronald Reagan did after he was elected president was to appoint a bipartisan National Commission on Social Security Reform. The commission had 15 members: eight Republicans and seven Democrats. Some were members of Congress. Some were private citizens. A couple of the more recognizable politicians on the commission were Senators Bob Dole and Daniel Patrick Moynihan. The private citizens included bankers, insurance company executives and management consultants. Alan Greenspan, the noted economist and chairman of the Federal Reserve, served as the commission’s chairman. The commission members met nine times, on approximately a monthly basis. In January 1983, they issued their report with a number of recommendations for reform. The report and their reform proposals filled a 150-page book, which I have on my desk. Though I can’t summarize all of it in

Blood Pressure Drops When He Stands Up DEAR DR. ROACH: Will you write about orthostatic hypotension? I’ve been told I have this disorder. I’m a retired 86-year-old man in fairly good medical shape. I want to regain my regular activities. My regular doctor put me on labetalol. I think he is researching this a bit himself. This apparently is not a frequent problem. I have found articles about it on the internet, but the medical language is not easy to understand. -- R.T.F.

hypotension worse. Some general advice may be of benefit. First, don’t try to get up too quickly. If lying down, sit up for a few minutes before trying to stand, to give your body time to adapt. If your doctor says it’s OK, increase salt and water intake. In your case, it might be worth finding someone, like a hypertension expert or a cardiologist, with more expertise in managing orthostatic hypotension. I assure you it is far more common than you might think. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been experiencing shortness of breath whenever I vacation and walk in the mountains. I was a smoker, but I quit 31 years ago. My doctor sent me for the lung capacity breathing test, and I passed with flying colors. The technician said my number was one of the highest she has seen. This concerns me. Why is it happening? -- N.L. ANSWER: I have two concerns. The first is that lung capacity is a measure of just what it sounds like -- how big the lungs are. When the technician says it’s among the biggest she’s seen, I worry that it’s too big. An elevated lung capacity can go along with emphysema, which can be due to a condition called alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency. Emphysema can be diagnosed by other components of pulmonary function tests, particularly a test called the DLCO, and confirmed by X-ray or CT. However, breathing problems also might indicate heart problems and anemia, so you might need another visit. On the other hand, there is less oxygen in the thin mountain air, so some degree of shortness of breath might not be abnormal.
ANSWER: “Orthostatic hypotension” literally means “low blood pressure on standing upright.” It is a symptom, not a diagnosis. There are many medical conditions that can lead to the symptom of orthostatic hypotension, but many people, especially those over 65, have no discernable cause that can be found. On standing, the blood pools in our veins, and the heart and blood vessels need to rapidly adjust to prevent blood pressure from falling too much. Even a brief drop in blood pressure can lead to a sensation of lightheadedness, and to fainting if it is more severe and prolonged. Normally, blood pressure drops about five points, but the body compensates by increasing heart rate * * * and by constricting blood vessels. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer indi As we get older, our body’s ability to vidual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. VETERANS POST by Freddie Groves
Mental Health Care 24/7 The Department of Veterans Affairs is serious about providing mental health care for veterans, especially in light of the ongoing, unchanging statistics for veteran suicides. A recent press release serves as a reminder that mental health resources and crisis intervention are available 24/7 at any VA health care facility. In 2018, 1.7 million veterans received mental health services at the VA. That includes 84,000 psychiatric stays, 41,700 residential stays and 21 million outpatient visits. For that year, 48 percent of in-person mental health visits were held on the same day as the veteran’s primary care visit. So far in 2019, 51 percent of in-person visits were held on the same day as the primary care visit. What happened, one wonders, to the remaining 49 percent? The 24/7 mental health coverage includes other services: a telehealth or video visit, scheduling an appointment, talking on the phone to a nurse or getting a prescription filled. Is that how the others received same-day services? Still, all it takes, per the VA website, is to walk into any VA medical center, day or night, or into a Vet Center during operating hours and you’ll get help. If you’re in crisis or know a veteran who is, call the Veterans Crisis Line at 800-273-8255 and press 1. Or you can send a text to 838255. Or chat at VeteransCrisisLine.net. If you’re concerned about someone else, check Defense Suicide Prevention Office (www. dspo.mil) for symptoms you should watch for. Scroll down to the Prevention (service members & veterans) and Intervention (warning signs) categories. If you just need advice and want to talk to a veteran who’s been where you are, the Military One Source Be There peer program will hook you up with a peer coach, if you’re freshly out of the service (up to one year). Call them at 800-342-9647. * * * Freddy Groves regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. The Long-Term Care Benefit Many Veterans Are Missing Out On DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: I have heard that the VA has a benefit that can help veterans and spouses with long-term care costs. We recently had to move my 86-yearold father – who served in the army nearly 60 years ago – into an assisted living facility, and my mom isn’t far behind. Can the VA help with these expenses? --Seeking Aid Dear Seeking: The Veterans Administration does indeed have a little-known, underutilized benefit that can help wartime veterans and their surviving spouses pay for a variety of long-term care costs. This benefit, called “Aid and Attendance,” is a special pension that’s paid in addition to a basic pension. It pays a maximum of $2,230 a

When she was downsizing, she gave it to me as a memento of the good times we shared over a cup of tea. It is decorated with shiny brown glaze and a white overlay of classical figures. The spout, handle and lid are gold. I would appreciate learning more about my teapot.

Strawberries and Raspberries -- Oh, My! Q:
This is a photo of a clear glass, footed bowl. I had forgotten about it and found it while looking for a small bowl to ser ve raspberries. I bought it at an antique shop years ago just because it appealed to me, and I don’t know anything about its histor y. It is decorated with strawberries, blossoms, leaves and vines and is in mint condition. The height is about 3 inches, the diameter is 5 inches, and there are mold marks on the base. I am hopeful you can tell me something about the maker, pattern, vintage and value.
A:
Cambridge Glass Co. made your bowl. The factory was established in Cambridge, Ohio, in 1873. The pattern is called Inverted Strawberry. The company introduced these kinds of patterns around 1908, making pieces in clear, color and carnival glass. The glass was available in clear, green, blue and purple. The intaglio pattern is depressed into the surface rather than raised. The words “Near Cut” and the letter “C” in a diamond were two of the Cambridge marks. “Near Cut” can be found on some examples of this pattern. The factory experienced a series of financial difficulties and passed through several owners. It closed in 1954 only to reopen again in 1955. By 1958, it was forced to close once more. In 1960, Imperial Glass Co. bought their molds. By 1984, an era of versatile glassmaking came to an end: Imperial Glass filed for bankruptcy and closed. Your footed bowl was made in the early

All of us probably remember our mothers admonishing us, “Don’t point!” The rule of thumb is that you can point at something, but never at someone. If you are pointing out an individual across the room, it is permissible to gesture with an open hand.
• It’s an automatic reflex to cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough. But did you know that it’s bad manners to cough into your right hand? Etiquette experts say that the right hand is your “social hand,” used for shaking hands and other social activities.
