• Elmer McCurdy was born in Maine in 1880. As a young adult, he travelled the country picking up odd jobs, working mostly in mining and plumbing.

(from page one)
was wiping out Europe’s population by the tens of millions, bathing oneself actually became a public no-no. People were somehow convinced that the plague entered the body through the pores in the skin, and bathing oneself only helped to open the pores. It was believed that the more body filth a person had the better they were protected. Those who dared take a bath were actually thought to be putting themselves at risk of death! One can only imagine the massive rush for soap when it was learned that the plague was actually caused by diseased rat fleas rather than airborne germs. • While we assume today that people wear a scent to disguise or enhance their own fragrance, the use of body perfume was originally intended to keep people from having to smell the stench of others. Also present was the fact that indoor plumbing was basically unheard of, so street gutters were spilling over with raw sewage. Upperclass women would often carry a small bouquet of fresh flowers in their hand called a nosegay, which they would discreetly sniff as necessary when the stench became unbearable.

He subsequently had a larger tub installed. • Edmond Rostand was a French author who hated to be interrupted while he was working, but he did not like to turn his friends away just because he was writing. So he spent much of his time writing while in the bathtub -- and then turned away his friends because he was taking a bath. In 1898 Rostand published his work, “Cyrano de Bergerac.”

Everyday CHEAPSKATE
®
by Mary Hunt
By Samantha Weaver
* It was noted 20th-century American playwright Arthur Miller who made the following sage observation: “Maybe all one can do is hope to end up with the right regrets.” * When creating its cocoon, the silkworm spins a continuous thread more than a thousand yards long, or 12,000 times the length of its own body. To accomplish a comparable feat, a 6-foot-tall man would have to spin a thread that stretched unbroken for 15 miles. * You may be surprised to learn that the onion is actually a lily, botanically speaking. * In 2016, Michigan State University received a delivery of inedible mayonnaise -- the mayo had been frozen and thawed during transit, spoiling all 10,000 pounds of the condiment. Instead of just throwing it out, MSU decided to put the bad mayo to good use. The campus already had an anaerobic digester -- a device that decomposes organic waste and converts it to methane -- so they poured in all 500 2.5-gallon tubs. * Guinness, that notoriously dark and bitter brew, contains fewer calories than skim milk or orange juice. Stout for breakfast, anyone? * If someone were to ask you to name the sunniest spot on Earth, you might be tempted to answer “the Sahara Desert” or some other such exotic place. You would be wrong, though; that distinction belongs to a town right here in America. Out of the possible 4,456 daylight hours each year, the sun shines for an average of 4,050 in Yuma, Arizona. That means that there’s cloud cover or rain for only about 10 percent of the time there. *** Thought for the Day: “Whatever a man prays for, he prays for a miracle. Every prayer reduces itself to this: Great God, grant that twice two be not four.” -- Ivan Turgenev
How to Buy Carpet: What You Need to Know to Make the Perfect Decision
It’s not something you buy every day. But when it’s time to buy carpet, ®you’ll want to know your stuff. Make a bad decision and you’ll pay a by Mary Hunt significant price in dissatisfaction and disappointment for years to come. First, decide the style of carpet and type of fiber you want, determined by where it will be installed and how much money you have to spend. Visit several retail carpet stores that will let you take carpet samples home for a few days. Walk on them. View them in a different light. Set a heavy piece of furniture on them to see if the fibers will rebound once removed.
Everyday CHEAPSKATE
STYLES OF CARPET PLUSH Usually one solid color with even, smooth pile height. Varies from lightweight (apartmentgrade) with fewer tufts per square inch to heavier weights that are very dense. Comes in a vast range of colors. Shows footprints and vacuum marks. FRIEZE Very tightly twisted tufts of yarn. More expensive than plush but wears much longer -- five years is not unusual. Comes in a variety of pile heights. Durable, holds up to heavy use without matting or showing traffic patterns. Rebounds well. SCULPTURED Has two types of tufted loops and cut pile in varying heights. Often called “high-low.” Doesn’t show much dirt. Often used in apartments. SAXONY Very dense-cut pile carpet with well-defined tufts. You can actually see the individual tuft tips, giving it a very textured look. Has a rough, textured appearance, although quite similar in appearance to plush. BERBER Made of short looped yarn that is aligned in rows for a uniform look. Loops can snag and

run easily like a pair of hose. When that happens, it is nearly impossible to repair. CUT-PILE BERBER Not really berber, as the loops are all cut to make short pile from fat yarn. The speckled look resembles berber. Looks good when new but wears poorly. COMMERCIAL Known for small, low-level loops and short-cut pile. Usually glued to the floor. Not typically used in residential areas, as it’s not soft underfoot. TYPES OF FIBER NYLON A synthetic fiber that outperforms all other fibers. It wears well, cleans like a dream, resists matting and comes in all colors and styles. And it is inexpensive. OLEFIN A fiber made from polypropylene, a type of plastic. Olefin is quite cheap. Most berber carpets are made of olefin. But it is difficult to clean -- more like impossible -- so it tends to look dingy in traffic areas. Feels rough underfoot. POLYESTER OR P.E.T. Feels very soft, but beware -- polyester carpet mats terribly and is not resilient. WOOL Quite expensive but a truly elite fiber for carpet. Requires cleaning by a specialist who deals in wool. Wears well. Lasts for decades. Price can be astronomical. PADDINGS UNDER CARPET Each carpet manufacturer recommends a specific pad for a specific style. Don’t go higher or lower than recommended. Go with exactly the type of padding recommended to ensure the best result. FOAM Will not hold up to traffic. Will flatten quickly and is not recommended for residential use. REBOND The most common for residential installations. Made of recycled polyurethane foam, is usually multicolored and looks like lots of little pieces stuck together (they are). Comes in a variety of densities and thicknesses to accommodate all manufacturer specifications. FIBER Very dense and more expensive than rebond. Fiber pad will help a berber carpet wear better. LONGEVITY The best thing you can do for carpet is to vacuum often and thoroughly -- twice weekly if at all possible. And in conclusion ... Have you figured it out? There is no better carpet for the price than a 100% nylon frieze installed over rebond padding. Nylon frieze resists stains. Spots come up very easily. It does not mat or become crushed. Nylon frieze is reasonably soft underfoot and will bring you many years of enjoyment. That was easy. Now comes the hard part -- selecting a color you will enjoy for 15 years or longer! * * * Mary invites questions, comments and tips at EverydayCheapskate.com, “Ask Mary a Question,” or c/o Everyday Cheapskate, 12340 Seal Beach Blvd., Suite B-416, Seal Beach, CA 90740. I’ve been watching “Mountain Men” for a few seasons. I know parts of the series must be staged, but I wonder how much. Also, do any of the “Mountain Men” actually live at the homesteads depicted, or do they have beach homes in Malibu or Boca? -- E.F.

I did some research, and like most reality shows, the History Channel’s “Mountain Men” appears to be the real deal. They mostly make their living on the terrains of North Carolina, Maine and Montana, but have acquired some money and, whether they want it or not -- fame due to being on the hit show. Incidentally, Oar and his wife, Nancy, have retired to Florida and aren’t featured on the current season. However, I’m not sure if they have a Boca Raton ZIP code. I was going to wear my camouflage shirt today but I couldn't find it. If tomatoes are technically a fruit, is ketchup a smoothie?
That answers a lot of my questions – and so far I think solar is a great idea. What’s next?
A: All companies and all solar
panels are not the same. The Desert is a harsh environment and you need a panel that can stand up to the heat -- a local company that understands how to properly install here. Start by looking at SunPower panels because they are the most efficient and you won’t need as many to produce the power you need. They’re from an American company and the electricity is conducted on the back of the panel with copper, not on the front with a screenprinted metal paste, which breaks down over time. You can compare warranties at this point as well, including details like parts, labor and shipping in addition to the length of the warranty. Those details could matter down the road. Renova Energy is an award-winning local company founded a decade ago that designs and installs commercial and residential solar and advanced battery systems. Solar consultants will answer all your questions and help you decide if solar is right for you - not pressure you into buying a system. Learn more at

Dog Talk with Uncle Matty By Matthew Margolis
Creators News Service
Costly Follies H.L. Mencken said, “The most costly of all follies is to believe passionately in the palpably not true. It is the chief occupation of mankind.” The following letter from a reader demonstrates that it is certainly the chief occupation of those who champion the companionship of a particular canine at any cost. “We recently got an 8-month-old yellow lab from a family with three small children. The lady said the dog could be aggressive and had nipped at her 2-year-old. “She is a very nervous puppy -- jumps at the slightest movement or noise. She also jumps and twitches when she sleeps. We have experienced her aggression now, and it is quite scary. The second morning we had her, something spooked her and she would not let us near our truck. The doors were all open, and she sat in the driver’s seat growling and showing her teeth. I got a treat and put it on the ground near us. When I said “release,” she got out, snatched the treat and jumped right back in. She calmed down, but was nervous all day after that. “She has showed her teeth a few times, and we’re not sure how to handle it. I read that it isn’t always good to approach or discipline her when she is showing her teeth and growling because it could initiate an attack. I know that she is scared and confused. Within one week she stayed in four different houses, with all new people. We’ve had her for a week, and we’d love to keep her. We have no children, but we have nieces and nephews around often. We need to break her of these aggressive behaviors or we will not be able to run the risk of her hurting a child. “She is a good dog -- excellent when playing fetch, gives up the ball or toy every time. However, she gets aggressive with some of her toys when indoors. We gave her a pig’s ear last night and she got extremely aggressive. Every time we moved, she growled and showed her teeth -- even when we were nowhere near her. She came out of it, but again she was nervous for the rest of the night.” Casey's Corner: Turn to page 10

YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau
Happy Anniversary My wife and I recently celebrated our 45th wedding anniversary. We were married on June 1, 1974. I was a relatively new employee of the Social Security Administration, having been hired just a year earlier. How that came to be makes for an interesting story. After graduating from college, I floundered around for a year or two looking for work. Finally, I decided to take a federal civil service exam. Within a month or two, letters arrived from various federal government agencies inviting me for interviews. The first letter came from the Federal Aviation Administration for a job as a “sky marshal.” Older readers may recall that in the late 1960s and early 1970s, there was a spate of airline hijackings. So the government was beefing up the air marshal service that had started in the 1960s. The interview did not go well. They were looking for tough young men, preferably with military training, who were familiar with guns, not a bookish nerd who barely knew the difference between a six-shooter and a peashooter. Next, came a letter from the Internal Revenue Service. Once again, I didn’t impress them. They wanted someone who was good with numbers. I was never into math, and could barely balance my checkbook. After three or four more failed interviews with different agencies, I had pretty much concluded that a career with the federal government was just not in the cards. And so, when a letter arrived from the Social Security Administration about a job in Springfield, Illinois, I just threw it in the trash. About two weeks later, I got a call from the manager of the Springfield Social Security office. I was living in my hometown, Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and he said the reason he called was that he was born and raised in the Lake Michigan seaport city and he thought he’d try to help a fellow Sheboyganite. He asked if I had received their letter. Thinking quickly on my feet, I lied and said, “What letter?” I then cursed the post office (apologies to all my postal service friends out there). He promised to send a follow-up invite.

'Blue Cloud' Mars Vision DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed last year with a Hollenhorst plaque. I have a “blue cloud” in the corner of my left eye at all times. My doctors’ only instructions were to notify them of any changes. I am scared. Am I going to have a stroke in the near future? When I asked one of my doctors, he said to “just keep an eye on it.” -- D.D.M.

waking up from eight hours of sleep. (I’m a new mother, and babies are next-level exhausting.) He said to try an experiment: Take a Pepcid at night and if I start to feel more refreshed, then I’m probably having acid reflux that prevents me from going into deep, refreshing sleep. Do you recommend this? -- H.C. ANSWER: I admire your dentist for noticing the enamel loss and considering the diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease. Dental enamel can be lost in an acid environment, so it’s a reasonable thought. However, it is normally severe acid reflux accompanied by frequent acid taste in the mouth that leads to tooth damage. There certainly are cases of asymptomatic GERD, but I think tooth damage is unlikely without further symptoms. Repeated vomiting, especially in people with a history of an eating disorder, is a much more common cause of enamel loss than GERD, and that may be a possibility. I would not recommend a medication trial because there are no reliable symptoms. (I agree with you that poor sleep in a new mom is not always due to reflux.) If GERD is really a concern, a diagnostic test, such as a 24-hour pH monitor or an endoscopy, would be my preference before considering a long-term course of treatment.
ANSWER: A Hollenhorst plaque is a cholesterol crystal that is seen in the blood vessels of the retina. In most cases, the cholesterol plaque had broken off from the carotid artery, the main blood vessel providing blood to the brain. While I understand your concern about its effect on your stroke risk, it seems to be fairly small -- in one study of 130 patients with Hollenhorst plaques, none of them had a stroke in the two years or so that they were followed in the study. However, all of the patients studied had * * * some degree of blockages in the carotid artery, Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenand your doctor should consider looking for ever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodblockages in yours if he hasn’t already. In most Health@med.cornell.edu. cases, carotid blockages are treated with medication, especially a statin medication. Aspirin might be appropriate for some people, but that is a discussion you should be having with an expert, such as your internist or cardiologist. Warfarin should not be used to treat cholesterol plaques. The manufacturers of warfarin recommend stopping warfarin if a cholesterol plaque is found, as warfarin can increase the risk of further events. However, there might be some situations in which anticoagulants must be used, such as in the case of a pulmonary embolism. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently went to my dentist. He noticed that the enamel on the back of my upper teeth, especially the front, is wearing away. He asked me if I experience acid reflux. VETERANS POST by Freddie Groves
Does This Remind You of Agent Orange? In the 1960s, the Navy, along with a civilian manufacturer, developed a flammable liquid-fuel firefighting foam called Aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) that the Navy began using in 1967. In the 1970s, the manufacturer had concerns about the chemical being found in humans at toxic levels. In the 1980s, the Air Force began research into toxicity in rats. In the 1990s, the Army Corps of Engineers said the foam was hazardous, and a Navy study determined that AFFF was toxic. In 2011, the Department of Defense finally issued a human health and environmental risk alert. In 2018, the DOD sent a note to Congress about using an alternative foam. This year, the EPA released an action plan. The Navy will begin using a new AFFF formulate in 2020. The gears of government grind slowly ... If they knew in the 1970s that the chemical was toxic, what took so long? Pease Air Force Base is an example. Pease closed in 1991 and the water was first tested in 2014. Workers who had been at the base were dying at an accelerated rate -- a cancer cluster. Communitywide testing in 2015 showed that everyone had elevated levels of PFAS. The result: The chemicals in the foam, called per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), got into the groundwater and wells. People were drinking it. Once introduced, those chemicals stay put. They’re called Forever Chemicals because they never go away. Studies indicate that they can cause cancer a decade later, increase cholesterol, interfere with pregnancy and more. If you served at any military installation since the 1960s, look online for “SSEHRI PFAS Contamination Site Tracker” and find a chart showing the locations of PFOA and PFAS sites. It currently has 210 sites listed. Search online for the Environmental Working Group PFAS map called PFAS Contamination in the U.S. To keep up with news on PFAS, bookmark https://pfasproject.com. * * * Freddy Groves regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. How to Protect Yourself from the Social Security Imposter Scam DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: My neighbor recently received a strange call from a Social Security employee who said her Social Security number had been suspended because it was involved in a crime. Cash Register Value Is Diminished Q:
We have been spring-cleaning and found a few objects we don’t want but are not sure if they have any value. In my letter, I have included a picture of a vintage cash register. It is metal with a wood frame, and it is not in good condition. The drawer won’t open; the top marble plate is missing. The price keys are white with black numbers. The overall weight is at least 50 pounds. There is a metal plate on the front with the words: The National Cash Register Co. was “The Nafounded in 1884. tional Cash Register Co. - Dayton, Ohio, U.S.A.” We would appreciate any information you can provide on our cash register.
A:
John Henry Patterson established the National Cash Register Co. in 1884 in Dayton, Ohio. The company grew slowly in the first 10 years until he found that aggressive marketing and advertising proved to be the key. By 1904, the factory was producing over 100,000 cash registers. Patterson also believed in maintaining a good work environment. He provided lunches, chairs with backs rather than stools, indoor restrooms and proper ventilation for his employees. He passed away in 1922, and his son took over. Eventually, the company became more diverse and began making other office equipment. It is still in business, operating today as the NCR Corporation. Your cash register is circa 1915 and in great need of restoration. Its value is diminished due to the poor condition, and it is probably only worth $125 to $150 as is. If it were in excellent operating

Theodore Haviland Co. is located in Limoges, France.
A:
Theodore Haviland established his porcelain company in Limoges, France, in 1892. Over the years, the company experienced several changes in management and reorganizations, but it continues to operate today. You have a berry bowl with matching serving dishes that was made around 1930. It would probably have a value in the range of $80 to $125.

One day as he prepared to take a bath, he slipped himself into the over-filled tub and several gallons of water overflowed, spilling to the floor. As he soaked there contemplating the physics involved in the spilling incident, he suddenly realized that a body immersed in fluid loses weight equal to the weight of the fluid it disp laces -- an important law of physics. He then realized that by weighing the amount of water displaced by the crown before it was melted, and then again after the jeweler had completed his work, he could tell whether any of the original gold had been replaced. It would work! He was so exuberant by his discovery that he allegedly burst from his home and rushed naked into the streets of Syracuse, shouting “Eureka! Eureka!” which means “I have found it!”
