Donna Gardner of Allentown, Pa., went out to run some errands and decided to bring her 11-year-old chocolate Lab, Max, along for the ride.

When she arrived back home, she collected her bags, locked up her car and went inside to tackle the demands of a busy household.

About an hour later, Gardner began hearing the persistent sound of a honking car horn. She went outside to check but saw nothing out of the ordinary, so she resumed her business inside. The beeping, however, continued. When she eventually peered out the window to take another look, she saw Max sitting in the driver’s seat of her car.

Everything Gardner did from that point on was exactly right: She cooled down an extremely overheated Max with wet rags, gave him some water and rushed him to the vet. The vet told local media that Max was weak upon arrival but should make a full recovery.

Gardner, the vet and everyone else are calling the incident a miracle. And there’s no doubt Max is one lucky Lab. But we don’t have to rely on miracles, luck or exceptionally intuitive canines to prevent our dogs from starring in the more prevalent version of this story, which doesn’t wrap with a happy ending.

With summer comes heat: Sidewalks can make a barefoot boy dance a jig. Drop an egg into a bowl of water that’s been sitting in the sun for hours, give it five minutes and -- voila! -- breakfast is served. Slipping into your car suddenly makes you feel sympathy for anything labeled “oven roasted.”

All of these examples affect your dog. Hot sidewalks are hard on his paws. Scalding water is undrinkable. And even a couple of minutes in a hot car can be enough to induce heat stroke or death.

Yes, that’s how lucky Max was.

Filing for Social Security Benefits

I get lots of questions about the mechanics of filing for Social Security benefits. Some of the questions seem very basic to me. But then I remind myself that even though I’ve been doing this stuff for 45 years, for most of my readers, filing for Social Security is an overwhelming and once-in-alifetime experience. Here are some questions from overwhelmed people.

Q:

I am turning 62 in November and plan to start my Social Security benefits then.

When and how should I file? Friends have told me I need to start the process at least six months ahead of time because it takes the government that long to get things right.

A:

I know people like to think of the federal government as this inefficient monster bureaucracy that can’t do anything right. But handling Social Security claims doesn’t fall into that category.

In fact, the Social Security Administration processes most retirement claims in just one or two weeks.

So you could even wait until November to file for your retirement benefits and everything would be OK. But it’s probably best to start the ball rolling two or three months ahead of time. I’d suggest going online at www.socialsecurity.gov sometime in September to file your retirement claim.

Q:

Both my wife and I turn 66 in August. I called SSA’s 800 number to set up an appointment to file for our benefits. But I was told the first available appointment at our local Social Security office isn’t until November.

They offered us an earlier appointment at another Social Security office 50 miles away. We don’t want to drive that far. What should we do?

A:

I guess it’s a sign of the times that your local Social Security office is booked up six months in advance. This is what happens when 10,000 new retirees are signing up for Social Security every day, and at the same time, the powers-that-be in Washington have enforced a 15% cut in SSA’s staff.

However, I guess we all just have to deal with that. In your case, I’m a little puzzled why you didn’t take that appointment at the other Social Security office. Gosh, I know people who would drive 50 miles to go shopping or to eat at a restaurant.

So why not take a one-hour drive for a once-in-alifetime event like signing up for Social Security benefits?

Anyway, if you don’t want to drive, you could file online at www.socialsecurity.gov. However, since both you and your wife are turning 66 this year, I suppose there is a chance you might want to employ the soon-to-be-eliminated strategy called file and restrict. That means one of you would file for retirement benefits while the other files a spousal claim with plans to save his or her own retirement application until age 70 to get a 32% “delayed retirement” bonus. I’ve been told by many readers that the online claims process isn’t conducive to the file and restrict strategy. So if you want to file and restrict, I’d gas up the car and take that 50-mile drive.

I signed up for Social Security when I was 62 years old. I got checks for about 18 months. Then I returned to work full time, so my benefits were stopped. I am about to turn 66 and the earnings penalties will no longer apply to me, so I need to file a new claim to start things up again. I tried doing it online, but it wouldn’t let me. What should I do?

Just concentrate on which month you want your Social Security entitlement to begin. In your case, that would be August. So when the application asks which month you want your benefits to begin, you will answer August. Your first check will come in September, but it will be the payment for August.

Should I be worried about being on Xarelto? -- E.H. ANSWER: Xarelto has the same or somewhat lower risk of bleeding than warfarin (Coumadin), but it cannot be reversed in an emergency. Aspirin significantly increases bleeding risk when added to Xarelto (or warfarin, or any of the other newer anticoagulants).

Throwing up blood is potentially a medical emergency, and you should at least talk to, if not see, your doctor that same day. If you threw up more than just a little blood, you should be on your way to the emergency room.

The decision to take anticoagulation to prevent stroke in atrial fibrillation is based on your benefits weighed against your risks. Given a history of vomiting blood and rectal bleeding, I would have a long talk with your doctor before making a decision. ***

Dear Needs: There are several financial assistance programs that can help lower-income Medicare beneficiaries who are having a difficult time paying their out-of-pocket health care costs.

Here’s what’s available, along with the eligibility requirements and how to apply: Medicare Savings Programs

Let’s start with a program that helps pay premiums and out-of-pocket costs for Medicare Parts A and B. It’s called the Medicare Savings Program (MSP), and it has several different benefit levels for people based on their income and asset level. At its most generous the program will pay your Part A and B premiums and pretty much all your Medicare deductibles, coinsurance and copayments. At its least generous the program will pay just your Part B premium.

I have enclosed the mark that is on the bottom of a covered tureen that I have. We aren’t sure how old it is, but do know it has been in the family for generations. I can remember holiday dinners at my grandmother’s, and she always placed it on the middle of the table.

The tureen is decorated with multicolored flowers, garlands and trimmed in gold. It is in perfect condition.

I plan to pass it along to my daughter and would like to know more about its histor y.

Antique Picture Reveals Clues to Victorian Era Q:

Enclosed you will find an antique picture of some relatives of mine, probably taken in Switzerland around 1870. This picture has been in my family for a long time and has been passed down from my great-grandmother.

The last name of one of the persons in the picture is Zwingli. He is a descendant of Ulrich Zwingli, who was known as the “Martin Luther of Switzerland” in the 1500s. He was stoned to death for his beliefs.

Since I’m not sure how old the picture is, I would like to know if it is possible to date a picture by the clothes the people wore. Is the picture of any value, other than sentimental? Any information you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Tureen was made by Maddock’s Works in Trenton, New Jersey.

With a three iron (21-24 degrees of loft), the openness of the face will aim the leading edge to the right as well as the face itself. Because the loft is small the face angle and leading edge are similarly aligned. But when lob wedge (60 degrees of loft) is opened, the leading edge does aim right, but the face angle just points more skyward (or more lofted). Yes, there is a slight misalignment to the right, but the clubface is now a 70-80 degree tool more than anything. Trust that open equals high not right!
