Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress - “Miss Angela”
Songs and poems have been written about the moon, lovers have smooched under its romantic light, and some cultures have even worshipped it as a form of heavenly deity. This week in honor of the 50th anniversary of man’s first landing on the moon, Tidbits heads into space to bring you the facts about this celestial body that has fascinated we earthly denizens since time began. • The moon is Earth’s only natural satellite. Compare that with Jupiter’s 79 moons, Saturn’s 62, Uranus’ 27, Neptune’s 14, and the two moons of Mars. Our moon is the fifth largest of its kind in our solar system.

• The diameter of the moon is 2,160 miles. Compared with Earth’s diameter of 7,926 miles, it is a bit less than a quarter of Earth's size. The moon is the brightest and largest object in our sky, illuminating the darkness of night by reflecting light from the sun.

the first successful docking of two space vehicles in space. • In December of 1968, Armstrong was offered the post of commander of Apollo 11, the spacecraft slated for a lunar landing. The mission was launched from Kennedy Space Center on July 16, 1969. On July 20, the craft touched down on the moon, and Armstrong radioed, “Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed,” referring to the name given to the lunar module.

• Six hours and 38 minutes after touchdown, Armstrong set his left boot on the surface, and spoke the words, “That’s one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.” There have been differing discussions about whether the “a” was included before the word “man,” due to static in the transmission. Armstrong snapped a picture of his first footprint, and after nearly 50 years, the print remains intact on the lunar surface. • About 19 minutes after Armstrong’s first steps, Buzz Aldrin joined him. The original plan called for Aldrin to take the first step, but due to their positions in the cramped quarters of the spacecraft, Aldrin would have had to crawl over Armstrong to reach the hatch and there was no room for that maneuver. The plan was changed, and Armstrong got the honor.

Top 10 Student Loan Tips for Recent Graduates -and Not So Recent, Too!
* It was Robert Wright, journalist, scholar and author of best-selling books about science, who made the following sage observation: “Like a lawyer, the human brain wants victory, not truth; and, like a lawyer, it is sometimes more admirable for its skill than its virtue.”
Everyday CHEAPSKATE
Whether you just graduated, you’re taking ® a break from school or you have already started by Mary Hunt loans, these tips will help repaying your student you keep your student loan debt under control. Put your thinking cap back on -- you're not through learning.
* Famously flamboyant country singer and songwriter Dolly Parton once anonymously entered a Dolly Parton look-alike contest ... and lost. * The small Asian country of Bhutan, nestled in the mountains between China and India, had no access to TV until 1999. * You’ve doubtless heard of narcolepsy, a medical condition that causes sufferers to sleep excessively -- sometimes up to 18 hours a day. But you’re probably not familiar with philagrypnia. People with this condition -- I won’t call them “sufferers” -require only three or four hours of sleep a day. What would you do with all that extra time?
1. Know your loans. It’s crucial that you keep track of the lender, balance and repayment status of each of your student loans. If you’re not sure, ask your lender or visit NSLDS.ed.gov. You can log in and see all this information. 2. Know your grace period. A grace period is the amount of time between leaving school and the due date of your fist payment. It’s six months for federal Stafford loans. For federal parent or PLUS loans, there is no grace period. Grace periods for private student loans vary, so consult your paperwork, or contact your lender to find out.
* Those who study such things say that the average woman changes her hairstyle 20 times between the ages of 18 and 24. Between the ages of 50 and 80, though, women change it only four times.

5. Don’t panic. If you’re having trouble making payments because of unemployment, health problems or other unexpected financial challenges, you have options for managing your federal student loans. There are legitimate ways to temporarily postpone your federal loan payments, such as deferment and forbearance. Just keep in mind that the interest will continue to accrue and be added to the principal amount, even though your payments may have been suspended. 6. Stay out of trouble. Ignoring your student loans has serious consequences that can last a lifetime. Not paying can lead to delinquency and default. For federal loans, default kicks in after nine months of nonpayment. Talk to your lender right away if you’re in danger of default. You can also find helpful information at StudentLoanBorrowerAssistance.org. 7. Lower the principal. When you make a federal student loan payment, it covers any late fees first, then interest and finally the principal. If you can afford to pay more than your required monthly payment -- even occasionally -- you can lower your principal, which reduces the amount of interest you have to pay over the life of the loan. Include a written request to your lender to make sure that the extra amount is applied to your principal. Otherwise, it will automatically be applied to future payments instead. 8. Pay off the most expensive loans first. If you’re considering paying off one or more of your loans ahead of schedule or trying to reduce the principal, start with the one that has the highest interest rate. If you have private loans in addition to federal loans, start with your private loans, since they almost always have higher interest rates. 9. Consolidation. A consolidation loan combines multiple loans into one for a single monthly payment and fixed interest rate. If this is appealing, make sure you know all of the pros and cons first. You can consolidate your federal student loans through the Direct Loan program. They have an online calculator to help you figure out what your interest rate would be. 10. Loan forgiveness. Public Service Loan Forgiveness is a fairly new program that purports to forgive federal student debt in certain situations. There’s a lot of misinformation out there making forgiveness appear to be a viable option for just about anyone. Since the program began, 99% of the applications have been rejected. Find out more at IBRinfo.org. Best advice: Don’t count on your loans to be forgiven, canceled or paid off for you. Instead, create a plan, and then buckle down so you are out of debt as quickly as possible. * * * Mary invites questions, comments and tips at EverydayCheapskate.com, “Ask Mary a Question.” This column will answer questions of general interest, but letters cannot be answered individually. Southern California Edison has a rebate on batteries and you can generally get a 30% Federal Tax Credit on them as well, although you will need to confirm that with your accountant. Renova is offering some good financing now as well, so you don’t have to come out of pocket for it all at once.

Right now, in Manhattan, a young mother is suing a preschool for, among other things, the return of the $19,000 tuition she paid in advance for the pre-education of her 4-year-old. For one year. One preschool year. In ever-rising numbers, parents are buying into the idea that admission to an elite preschool is a must -- the gateway to the Ivy League, assurance that your child will lead a “winning” life. Yet, so many of these same adults fail to grasp the importance of educating their dogs on even the most basic level. Money is often the reason -- and in light of certain early education costs, I can see how greenbacks might be in short supply. But it seems the worse the behavioral problem the greater the resistance to training. In these cases -- talking about aggression here -- an even more powerful force behind the resistance is that people just don’t want to believe their dog is aggressive. Take the woman whose two-year-old dog bit her husband, her child and her. Knowing that, she placed the dog in her niece’s lap. And he bit her. Knowing that, she set her dog down on a friend’s lap. He bit her in the face. When I asked her why she would do that, she hemmed and hawed and finally said it: “I don’t want to believe my dog is aggressive.” A woman with an aggressive pit bull mix put off dealing with it for two years -- calling it assertiveness, playing it down, deeming it everything other than what it was -- and now she’s pregnant. Suddenly, she wants to “fix” a dog that can never be trusted around a baby. She let the aggression go on too long. Last week, a man called me up and said, “My dog is a problem.” Refreshing, I thought to myself, calling it what it is. He told me that his dog just bit him. But during the course of the discussion, it came out that the dog had sunk his teeth into the man’s 15-year-old daughter two weeks prior. I asked him why he hadn’t called me then, and he said, “It wasn’t that bad of a bite. Mine was bad.” Casey's Corner: Turn to page 10

YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau
Two Views of Social Security From the 1970s
My sister lives in a home she inherited from my mother after my mom died in the early 1990s. She was recently cleaning out the basement, and in a far corner, she found a box my mom had labeled, “Tom’s writings.” It was full of essays and other reports I’d written while in grade school, high school and college. There were also clippings of Social Security-related artiicles I wrote occasionally for newspapers and magazines -- long before I started writing this weekly column. My sister sent the box to me. And going through it brought back many memories from my early days working for the Social Security Administration. I’m going to share two of them with you today. In my mom’s box was a 1973 newspaper clipping that generated a letter to the editor from me. It was the story about some university economists who said that “people under 35 have absolutely no chance of collecting Social Security.” Their advice to young people was to “avoid the system if you can and save for your old age on your own.” The story included the picture of a 30-something mother burning her Social Security card while her three small children looked on with puzzled looks on their faces. That faded newspaper clipping was yellowing around the edges. I thought that was entirely appropriate. (“Yellow journalism” -- get it?) What a pile of hooey that story was. I hope the economists cited in the article lost their tenure and have since been lucky to get bookkeeping gigs for bowling alleys and fireworks stands. Well, actually, they might deserve a small amount of credit if their advice to “save for your old age on your own” encouraged some readers of that newspaper story to do just that. Everyone knows that you were never supposed to live on your Social Security check and that you need to supplement it with savings and other investments. So if some people listened to them and did what they suggested, then they are now probably living comfortably in retirement with savings AND their Social Security check. If that mother who was burning her Social Security card is still alive, she must be in her 70s or 80s. And she has probably been getting a Social Security check for 10 or 20 years. I wonder if she burns those checks, too! (Well, OK, there is no check to burn because she would have direct deposit. But I think you get my point.) As I’ve discussed many times in past columns, for the past 50 years, hundreds, if not thousands, of people have come up to me following a speech, or sent emails to my column, predicting the downfall of Social Security. I have always told them the same thing. Sure, Social Security faces some challenges. But it has faced many other challenges before. And Congress always eventually does the right thing. It happened in the early 1980s, not too long after the economists gave their ill-considered advice. Back then, Congress raised the retirement age and added a very small increase in the Social Security payroll tax. And that has kept the system chugging along. And in the not-too-distant future, it will happen again. Some relatively modest reforms

I was immediately put on Lipitor and Plavix. The statin drugs made my arms and shoulders ache, and the doctor tested me and found no reason for it. He said anecdotally that he had many patients who complained of the same thing. He then put me on fenofibrate. The pain stopped immediately. Now he says new research shows that any cholesterol-lowering drug makes the blood tests show lowered cholesterol levels but it does not prevent heart attack or stroke. So he took me off it. I wonder if you know anything about this study that said there was no benefit to taking statins. I did not really understand what he said. -- G.C.

Yes, Men Can Get Osteoporosis Too DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: Can men get osteoporosis or is it a problem exclusively for women? When I fell and broke my wrist last winter the doctor that treated me told me I might have osteoporosis. I never followed through and got checked for it, but I am curious to know if this is really possible. Can you shed any light on this for me? -- Wondering William Dear William: Many people think osteoporosis is a woman’s disease, but men can get it too, especially in their later years. Here’s what you should know: Osteoporosis in Men Osteoporosis is a disease that causes the bones to become weak and brittle and more susceptible to fractures. Though women are four times more likely to acquire it, around two million American men have osteoporosis today, and another 12 million have “pre-osteoporosis,” or osteopenia. Unfortunately, men are much less likely than women to get the health of their bones checked even after they break a bone. That’s because some doctors are often unaware of the many factors that put men at risk of osteoporosis.
Tidbits of Coachella Valley
Page 13
Prevention and Treatment A good first step in preventing and treating osteoporosis is to get screened. All men over age 70 should have a bone density test, and those who’ve had a fracture or have other risk factors should be tested after age 50. Screening for osteoporosis is a simple, painless, bone density test, which takes about five minutes. Many health insurance companies will cover bone density tests, as does Medicare.

The most widely prescribed for osteoporosis are bisphosphonates, a class of drugs designed to slow or stop bone loss. Talk to your doctor about these and other medication options, as well as potential side effects.

Boost your calcium: The best way to get bone-building calcium is through your diet. Dairy products (milk, cheeses and yogurt), dark green leafy vegetables (broccoli, kale, collards), sardines and salmon, cooked dried beans, soy foods, almonds and fortified cereals and juices are all good sources of calcium. While menopause is a major factor that accelerates bone loss in women, some of the key risk factors that put men at risk for developing osteoporosis include: being over age 70; being thin or underweight; consuming more than three alcoholic drinks a day; having a parental history of osteoporosis; and having a previous fracture. Certain health conditions – such as rheumatoid arthritis, celiac disease, testosterone deficiency, hyperthyroidism, COPD, kidney or liver disease, and mobility disorders like Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis or stroke – can also increase your risk. In addition, so can taking certain medications like anti-inflammatory steroids, prostate cancer drugs, proton pump inhibitors for GERDs, antidepressants, immunosuppressants, and certain anti-seizure drugs. To help you determine your risk of osteoporosis, the International Osteoporosis Foundation has a quick, online quiz you can take at RiskCheck.IOFBoneHealth.org.

Armoire Reflects Two Eras
A:
Q:
Enclosed is a photo of an antique armoire I purchased from an antiques dealer in Los Angeles in 1990. I was told it originally was from England and made in the late 1880s. It is oak, and it has five drawers behind the left door and a pole for hanging clothes in the center, which I now use for a TV. For transport, it breaks into five parts: the top and bottom pieces, the left side with the door attached as one unit, the Armoire shown is a blend of two periods of design center section with the right door attached, and the left door to be carried separately. I would like to know the present value of my armoire and anything about its histor y.
A:
Your armoire is a blend of two periods of design. The straight lines and simplicity of design reflect the Arts and Crafts movement. The cornice with dentil molding and bun feet show the beginning of the Edwardian era. The Arts and Crafts period lasted from 1880 to 1920. The Edwardian period began around 1901 and ended in 1910. Your armoire was made around 1900 and would probably be worth $1,500 to $2,500. *** This mark is on the bottom of a porcelain bowl that was my great-grandmother’s. Also included with the mark are the words: “Hand Painted - T & V - Depose.” The bowl is decorated with red-orange poppies and gold trim. It is about 14 inches in
Your mark was used by Pickard China in Chicago. It was founded by Wilder Pickard in Chicago in 1894. They purchased porcelain blanks from European porcelain factories and decorated the pieces in their Chicago studio. John Loh, one of Pickard’s most prolific and talented artists, painted many of the poppy patterns around 1898 to 1912. He painted such a large number of the poppy patterns that he came known as “Poppy John.” “T & V” represents Tressemanes and Vogt, the porcelain factory located in Limoges, France, that made your bowl. “Depose” is the French word for registered. Loh often signed his work. Take another close look at your bowl: It may be signed. Your bowl was made around 1905 and would probably be worth $150 to $250. * * *

* On July 26, 1775, the U.S. postal system is established by the Second Continental Congress, with Benjamin Franklin as its first postmaster general. Franklin set up more efficient colonial routes and standardized delivery costs based on distance and weight.
* On July 22, 1933, American Wiley Post returns to Floyd Bennett Field in New York, becoming the first aviator to fly solo around the world. Piloting a Lockheed Vega monoplane named the Winnie May, he circled the globe in 7 days, 18 hours and 49 minutes. * On July 27, 1949, the world’s first jet-propelled airliner, the British De Havilland Comet, makes its maiden test-flight in England. The jet engine would revolutionize the airline industry, shrinking air travel time in half. * On July 24, 1959, during the grand opening ceremony of the American National Exhibition in Moscow, Vice President Richard Nixon and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev engage in a heated debate in a model kitchen set up for the fair. The “kitchen debate” became one of the most famous episodes of the Cold War. * On July 25, 1965, Bob Dylan went electric at the Newport Folk Festival, performing a rock-and-roll set publicly for the first time. The dismayed audience shouted and booed when he launched into an electrified version of “Maggie’s Farm.” * On July 28, 1976, a nighttime earthquake measuring between 7.8 and 8.2 magnitude on the Richter scale flattens Tangshan, a Chinese industrial city with a population of 1 million. The 23-second temblor leveled 90 percent of Tangshan’s buildings, killing an estimated 242,000 people in the city and surrounding areas. * On July 23, 1996, at the Summer Olympics in Atlanta, the U.S. women’s gymnastics team wins its first-ever team gold. The American women’s best finish to that point had been a silver at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.

• While paging through his nautical charts and astronomy books, Columbus noticed that a total lunar eclipse was to take place on February 29, 1504. Three days before the eclipse the explorer demanded to meet with the Arawaks leader. He sternly warned him that his God was so angered by his attitude that in three days he would make the moon disappear from the sky. • On the night of the eclipse the Arawaks watched in wide-eyed horror as the moon began to wane before them in the sky. Immediately, the terrified tribesmen ran to the ships carrying load after load of supplies, begging Columbus to ask his God to bring the moon back. After telling them he needed to speak with God in private, Columbus used an hourglass in his ship's cabin to time the eclipse. At just the right moment, he stepped out and announced that God had decided to show mercy, and the moon began to reappear -- to the immense relief of the tribe. • A few months later Columbus and his crew left the islands and sailed back to Spain with all the provisions they needed, and more.

Press On It’s often discouraged to make a forward press with the hands and club in a full swing, but many great putters have done so with their stroke. A forward press is used to ignite movement without the jerkiness or tension of starting backwards from a static position. With putting, it can aid with rhythm and good impact mechanics at the same time.
The simple trick is to take your normal putting set up. Next, move the hands and top end of the grip an inch toward the target first (without other body movement). Finally, rebound into the backstroke as if the putter head was going back as the hands were still going forward. The hope is that the putter head makes a smooth move away from the ball on a neutral path. Great putters like Ben Crenshaw were noticeable in their forward press, but it can be subtle with most golfers. Just get used to having a little move ADVERTISING PROOF forward before going back.
