• But in 1676, his credibility came into question when he sent them observations of microscopic single-celled organisms, whose existence had previously been entirely unknown. The Royal Society viewed his report as preposterous. One type of bacteria is used as a natural organic pesticide. When caterpillars ingest it, it causes tiny holes in the caterpillar's gut. When the caterpillar's own natural microbes leak through those holes, it provokes an out-of-control immune response that kills the caterpillar.

by Mary Hunt

By Samantha Weaver

* It was English novelist and essayist Virginia Woolf, one of the foremost modernist literary figures of the 20th century, who made the following sage observation: “For most of history, Anonymous was a woman.” * Would you rather give up TV or your phone? In a Pew Research poll conducted last year in the United States, only 31 percent of those surveyed said it would be “very hard” to give up TV, while 52 percent said the same thing about their cellphone. * In the language known as Ewe, spoken by some natives of West Africa, the concepts of “yesterday” and “tomorrow” are expressed by the same word. If you were to translate that word literally into English, you’d come up with “not now.” * Most people are aware of the fact that scorpions have eight legs -- they are, after all, arachnids -- but you probably didn’t realize that they also have eight eyes. * According to the Crayola Company, you can eat 3,500 of their crayons a day and still not reach the level of toxicity found in an ordinary glass of drinking water. They don’t mention how -- or why -- anyone would consume that many crayons in a lifetime, let alone a single day. * Those who study such things say that Niagara Falls will only last another 2,400 years. * Historians say that Mary, Queen of Scots was informed of the murder of her husband, Lord Darnley, in 1567 while she was playing golf. She must have been quite a dedicated sportswoman (or an indifferent wife) because they also say that she completed the round. *** Thought for the Day: “I never lecture, not because I am shy or a bad speaker, but simply because I detest the sort of people who go to lectures and don’t want to meet them.” -- H.L. Mencken (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

How to Cut Your Pet Expenses in Half

For many of my readers, their pets are like children. So, of course, you love your furry friends and want the best for®them. But if the cost to keep them fed, healthy, cared for and lookby Mary Hunt ing good has gotten so high and you’re the one coughing up fur balls, take heart. There are lots of little ways to cut pet expenses that together will help you save big on your pet costs. According to one survey, pet owners spend on average of $126.19 every month on their pets. Dogs are more costly than cats, but canines are not the most expensive pets. Fish are the cheapest pets; fish owners spend $62.53 a month on their aquatic friends. So how can you afford to care for your furry friend in sickness and in health? Make prevention and maintenance your top priorities. Carefully track every expense, and then consider these tips that will help you cut your pet expenses in half without putting your pet’s health at risk. FREE EXAMS Search for free initial exams. Local veterinarians often advertise a free initial examination to market their business and attract new customers. Take advantage of the offer. This kind of office visit typically runs between $40 and $60. MOBILE LOW-COST CLINICS For vaccinations, microchips, and heartworm and flea prevention, check around for low-cost or mobile clinics. While you may want to stick with the same vet for annual exams, you can save a bundle on preventive services.

Everyday CHEAPSKATE

RESTRAIN A fence is the best way to avoid big vet bills, says David T. Roen, D.V.M., board-certified veterinarian and owner of the Clarkston Veterinary Clinic in Clarkston, Washington. “I see more dogs in my office because of injuries sustained while unrestrained than for any other reason,” he says. “Dogs should always be leashed, fenced or supervised. CHOOSE THE RIGHT FOOD Dr. Roen advises pet owners to skip all the fancy premium foods sold by vets. Use name-brand pet food from the supermarket labeled “complete and balanced.” Or look for the seal of approval of AAFCO (the Association of American Feed Control Officials). Stick with the same brand. Switching abruptly can cause health

issues for some animals. And less is better, as slightly underweight pets have fewer health problems. SPAY AND NEUTER Reproductive issues aside, spayed and neutered dogs have fewer health and behavioral problems. MAKE WELLNESS ROUTINE Some pet supply stores offer in-store clinics and special events. Humane societies and veterinary schools offer low-cost clinics where inoculations and wellness exams are administered by professionals. Keep good records of your pets’ inoculations and treatments. FORGET PET HEALTH INSURANCE Pet insurance will probably cost more money than it saves, says Dr. Roen. But you should anticipate future medical bills. “Instead of sending premiums to an insurance company, put the amount you’d pay in premiums into a savings account,” he says. GET SECOND OPINIONS Even if it’s an emergency, if the estimate is more than a few hundred dollars, get a second opinion. If the estimate is $800 and you can only afford $400, speak up, says Dr. Roen. There may be less aggressive and cheaper treatments. SHOP AROUND FOR MEDICATIONS Ask your vet for prescription drug samPlease review ples to get started. Then call around to retailers such as Walmart or Costco pharmacies to compare prices. Many meds are the same for Contact Office: 7 humans and animals. EXCHANGE PET SITTING Hiring a pet sitter or boarding at a kennel can run from $40 to $60 per pet per night. W That can add up fast! Instead, when you travel, 1 exchange pet sitting with a friend or neighbor. A Choose someone you trust who doesn’t vacation more than you do so it’s an equal exchange. FIND THE BARGAINS When you need a crate, a cat carrier or other pet equipment, don’t rush to the pet store. Instead, look at Craigslist.org. You won’t believe all the bargains on gently used,Please even review ca brand-new, pet gear. Make sure you sanitize Contact you crates, carriers and the like even if they look Office: 760clean. A 50-50 ratio of either vinegar or bleach (never mix the two) and water should do the trick. * * * Mary invites questions, comments and tips

I’m still not convinced to go solar. What am I missing?

A:

I know, it’s a new technology and it seems amazing that blue things on top of your roof can make electricity. Let’s discuss options for what’s holding you back. Maybe you don’t understand the technology. The photons from the sun “get excited” and create a DC electric current that is captured and is changed to an alternating current (AC), which is what you use in your home.

It’s one thing to battle over who gets the dog once divorce is imminent. It’s another to argue about the dog until divorce is imminent. This is a real problem -- poorly behaved dogs that destroy marriages and deflate budding romance. What to do about these canine homewreckers? Heed the following letter from a reader: “My dog will not let my boyfriend kiss me without growling or barking the whole time, and it is impossible to be intimate without my dog wanting to be on the bed with us. I have tried removing him from the room, but the barking only gets worse. It has become very awkward and uncomfortable. Please help.” It’s clear who’s wearing the pants in this relationship -- and that someone else would prefer to be wearing less of them. But the dog is definitely running the show, and he’s determined to drown out the competition. Since we can’t sit our pups down in front of an after-school special on the birds and the bees, we’re left with only one solution: training. Basic obedience training is an education all dogs should receive. It’s like sending your child to school: nonnegotiable. Simple commands like “come,” “down” and “stay” are powerful tools in thwarting a canine homewrecker. And the appropriate supplies are essential. Provide your pup with a crate or doggie bed, and teach him to retreat to it on command. Adorn it with soft blankets and favorite chew toys to make it a desirable place to visit. If he resists, stand firm. You want your dog to love his resting place -- never banish him to his bed as punishment -- but he doesn’t get a say in when and whether to retire. Your “bedtime” is his bedtime. But your bed is not his. No pup should have the run of the house before the age of two. When you are home, confine the dog in an area of the house where you can at all times see him and quickly reach him to correct problem behaviors. Baby gates work great. When you are not home, leave your dog in

 The U.S. Food and Drug Administration isn’t happy about it, because the FDA thinks it’s protecting us from the possiblilty of receiving bad or worthless drugs.  The drug companies in the U.S. definitely aren’t happy about it -- for obvious reasons.

SENIOR NEWS LINE by Matilda Charles © King Features Synd., Inc.

Are Canadian Drugs in Our Future? If you watch the news you might have seen that there’s a proposal underway that the Trump administration is looking into that would allow states to import prescription drugs from Canada, where costs are lower. Drugs are cheaper in other countries because their governments control the prices rather than the pharmacutical companies themselves. As it now stands, we can go across the border and bring back a three-month supply of our medications for personal use, but there are pitfalls. Technically it’s illegal, but it’s often overlooked at the border. Going to Canada for your drugs can be inconvenient, especially if you don't happen to live in a northern area close to the border. The high cost of travel can very quickly eat into the savings gained by buying lower-cost prescriptions. ADVERTISING PROOF

Final Changes DUE: TUES., APR. 24

The drug industry can do what it likes, including passing along the costs of research and development to us, the consumer. Medicare, for example, isn’t allowed to negotiate for lower prices. If your drugs are expensive and you are struggling or even sacrificing in order to buy the medications you need, talk to your doctor. There might be a suitable generic that can serve as a substitute and be equally as effective. Price shop at various pharmacies. Call the manufacturer and ask if they have coupons or a discount program that can offer reduced costs. Ask your pharmacist for the lowest possible discounted price they can offer you. If you’re on Medicare Part D, be sure you’re using a preferred pharmacy. Look online at www.goodrx. com for low cost drugs near you.

a comfortable crate with good visibility or confine him in a small area of the house. This is a necessary element of training and will help to establish you as the head of household, to keep him safe, and to give him time to learn the house rules and prove himself trustworthy. Finally, if it’s all that incessant barking that’s coming between you and true love: -- Keep a shake can nearby -- a tin can with a few coins inside will do. When your pup barks, give the can a firm shake. The sudden loud noise will immediately divert his attention and eventually deter his barking. -- Another approach is to use a squirt bottle instead of a shake can. The sudden spray of water to the face will startle and distract him. -- There are also safe and effective antibarking products on the market -- not recommended in lieu of training, but in tandem with training. Citronella collars release a nontoxic yet irritating spritz of citronella around your pup’s face whenever he barks. Sonar collars work by emitting a high-pitched sound that is annoying to the dog and inaudible to the dog owner. A belligerent dog should not mean the end of an otherwise sound romance. In cases such as these, don’t get rid of the dog or the relationship -- get rid of the problem. Woof!

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

Don’t Listen to Friends and Neighbors About Social Security I’ve said this before and written columns about this before. Do NOT listen to your friends and neighbors when it comes to Social Security advice. Whatever they are telling you is probably wrong. Here is another batch of questions saved up from this week’s mailbag that proves my point.

Q:

My sister’s husband died on July 24. He was 76 and started getting his benefits at 65. He was getting $1,920. She is 70 and is getting her own $1,250, which she started at age 62. One of our best friends told her that because she took her own benefits at 62, she isn’t due any widow’s benefits. Is this true?

A:

It’s absolutely not true. What she is due in Social Security widow’s benefits usually depends on one thing only: her age when she became a widow. And at her age, her own benefit will be supplemented up to 100% of what he was getting at the time of death. In other words, she will keep getting her $1,250 per month, and then she will get an extra $670 in widow’s benefits to take her up to his $1,920 benefit rate.

Q:

My best friend’s husband died in June. He was 85. She is 81. Her neighbor told her that she would be automatically switched to widow’s benefits because that is what happened when her husband died. But it’s been more than two months now and nothing has happened. How long does it take?

bor. Retroactive benefits can only be paid for claims filed after full retirement age, and then only for a maximum of six months. Or to be more precise, the law says retroactive checks cannot be claimed if they involve the payment of reduced retirement benefits. Here are three quick examples. Huey files for Social Security at age 68. He can claim up to six months of retroactive benefits if he wants. Duey files for Social Security at age 66 and 3 months. He can claim three months worth of retroactive benefits but nothing before age 66. Luey files for Social Security at age 65. He can’t claim any retroactive benefits.

Q: I have been getting my Social Se-

curity since I was 66. I’m now 68, and I’m still working. My neighbor tells me that he is in the same boat as me but that he gets a small increase ever y year in his Social Security check because of his extra earnings. But I haven’t seen any increases. What’s going on?

A: Your neighbor is probably in a differ-

Q:

I am 64 years old. Recently, I ap plied for my Social Security and told them I wanted six months worth of retroactive benefits. The SSA clerk told me no such benefits were due. But a neighbor told me that he got retroactive benefits and that all Social Security claimants have the option of selecting this back pay. So did I get a misinformed Social Security agent?

A:

No, you’ve got a misinformed neigh-

before Januar y 2020. He said if I do that, then I could take spousal benefits on my wife’s record and save my own until I am 70 to get a 32% bonus for doing so. Is this true?

A:

It’s not true. Your friend is mixing an apple with an orange. The apple is a rule that says you must always file for your own Social Security benefits first, before you can try claiming anything off of a spouse’s Social Security record. The orange is a loophole to that law that says if you turn 66 before January 2020, then you can file for spousal benefits first and save your own until 70 -- and get that bonus you mentioned. But you will not be 66 before January 2020. So you can’t have the orange. You’re stuck with the apple. Your only choice will be to file for your own Social Security benefits at whatever age you decide to do that.

Q:

I turn 66 on Feb. 19, 2020, and that’s when I want my Social Security to begin. Someone I trust told me to file for it now because it takes the government about six months to line up my benefits correctly.

If it was a simple conversion from wife’s benefits to widow’s benefits, the changeover would happen very quickly. Probably in less than a week. But I’m guessing that it’s not that simple in your friend’s case. I will explain. I will bet that your friend’s neighbor was getting straight spousal benefits. In other words, she wasn’t getting her own Social Security, just a dependent wife’s benefit on her husband’s account. In that situation, when the husband dies, the wife is automatically switched to widow’s benefits with just a push of a few buttons at the Social Security Administration. On the other hand, I’m guessing your friend was getting her own Social Security benefits. In cases like that, there is no automatic conversion to survivor benefits. Your friend has to contact SSA and file a claim for widow’s benefits. She can do that by calling them at 800-772-1213.

Confusion Over Women’s Heart Attack Symptoms DEAR DR. ROACH: My question is about symptoms for women’s heart attacks. I have always heard that symptoms for women can be much different from men’s. Instead of the chest-clutching, sharp pain that men can have, I have read that women’s symptoms can be any of these: heartburn or indigestion; pain in the jaw, neck, shoulders, back, one or both arms; fatigue and troubled sleep; dizziness and nausea; or extreme anxiety. Are you KIDDING me? I am a healthy, active 63-year-old woman. I have had all of these symptoms at one time or another. If I acted every time I had one of these symptoms, I would be at the doctor’s office every day. How is one to know which symptoms to take seriously and act on immediately, and which to wait a few days to see if it is temporary? -- J.

Tidbits of Coachella Valley

new symptoms seriously. If you never get heartburn, for example, then heartburn at age 63 should prompt concern. Third, context matters. Symptoms such as nausea or jaw pain that occur with exercise -- even carrying a bag of groceries or walking up stairs -- is definitely a reason to talk to your doctor. Most women don’t know that heart disease remains their No. 1 killer, far outstripping breast cancer (or any cancer). Both women and men need to take even vague symptoms seriously, especially if the symptoms are new, exertional or if the person has several risk factors. As a primary-care doctor, I’d rather see my patient for her concerns that symptoms may be heart disease than see her in the ICU with a heart attack. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have diverticulosis. At one time I was told not to eat nuts. I have since read that eating nuts is OK. What is your take? Also, are chia seeds safe? -- E.M. ANSWER: There are two answers to this question. The first comes from clinical research, and a very large trial showed that nut and popcorn consumption tended to protect against diverticulitis and diverticular bleeding. This may be due to the high fiber content, recommended in people with diverticula. So most experts allow their patients with diverticulosis to eat nuts and seeds, including chia seeds. The second is practical experience. If someone has had clinical diverticulitis after eating nuts and seeds, especially if it happens repeatedly, it makes simple sense not to do so.

ANSWER: I have seen many letters similar to yours. The confusing problem is that it’s true: In women, heart attack symptoms and the symptoms of angina before a heart attack * * * can include all of those vague symptoms. The Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer indisame is true of men as well, although it’s more vidual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenlikely for women than for men to have symptoms ever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodother than the classic left-sided chest discomfort Health@med.cornell.edu. (people are much more likely to describe angina as “discomfort” or “pressure” than “pain”). So your question is entirely valid: How do you know when to take common symptoms seriously? The first thing I would say is that the greater your risk for heart disease, the more seriously you should take any symptom. Age, family history of heart disease, high blood pressure and cholesterol, lack of regular physical exercise and diabetes are among the most important risk factors. VETERANS  POST  by Freddie Groves

A Cure for Hepatitis C Hepatitis C is one of those illnesses you can have for years and not know it -- until it starts damaging your body. Untreated hepatitis C can lead to cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver, brain damage, liver disease and liver cancer, and it can take decades to show up. Until recently it has been nearly impossible to cure. The Department of Veterans Affairs now says in a press release that it has cured 100,000 veterans with hepatitis C. In the past, treatment involved daily pills and weekly shots for a year, and even that had a low cure rate with bad side effects. Now the new treatment is a pill a day, with fewer side effects, and it takes just weeks. But that’s only if you know you have it. The VA said recently that it has tested 85 percent of veterans who either have hepatitis or are at risk. Hepatitis is a blood-borne disease with a long list of possible routes of transmission: sharing drug needles, getting a tattoo, sharing a toothbrush, blood-contaminated wounds, blood transfusions before 1992, contact with blood if you’re in the medical field ... and those injector guns they used to give vaccines back when we went into the service. Those injector guns have been a big bone of contention, one they’ve known about for a very long time. Miniscule drops of blood splatter back into the injector, waiting for injection into the next patient. Now the VA has to admit that the injector guns are “biologically possible” as a means of transmission. Even if you’ve never shared drug needles or gotten a tattoo, you could have hepatitis C and not know it. The rate of veterans who have it is five times the civilian rate.

To learn more, go online to www.hepatitis.

How to Find a Good Financial Planner DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: Can you recommend some tips on finding and choosing a good financial planner? I wish I could say we are younger, but my wife and I are already in our late fifties and should have been thinking seriously about this years ago. We need to get some professional advice to help us better prepare for our retirement years, which are not so far off anymore. --Advice Seekers Dear Seekers: With all the different financial planners, advisers, services and specialties available today, finding and choosing a trusted professional that can help you meet your financial goals can be confusing and a bit overwhelming. Here are a few suggestions to consider: Where to Look A good place to start your search is by asking friends or relatives for recommendations. If you don’t know anyone who can give you a referral, and you’re looking for broad-based financial advice, hire a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) as they are considered the “gold standard” in the industry. CFPs must act as fiduciaries, putting their client’ best interest above their own.

Monk Figure Made by Van de Meulebroucke Q:

I have enclosed a photo of a monk figure that was given to me many years ago. It is made of some type of brown, bronze-colored stone and is slightly heavy for a figure this size. The monk is seated and holding a book in his hands. It is on a platform about a quarter-inch high, and the overall height is almost 8 inches. Impressed into the base are the words “M. V. D. Meulebroucke.” On the bottom of the piece are the words “Made in Belgium.” I would like to know the histor y and value of my figure.

made by Marcel Van de Meulebroucke. He was a Belgian artist, sculptor and restorer born in 1902. Your figure is half of a plaster cast bookend. Van de Meulebroucke produced images of saints and folk figures. He died in 1992. Your early 20th century monk f i g u r e Marcel Van de Meulebroucke was a bookend Belgian artist, sculptor and restorer. would probably be worth $25 to $50. *** This mark is on the bottom of set of six blue-and-white cups with matching saucers. They are decorated with scenes of ancient churches and a background of trees and foliage. The borders of the saucers are wide, with blue-scrolled cartouches. What can you tell me about my cups and saucers?

saucers made by George Jones & Sons. The company made earthenware, porcelain and majolica in Staffordshire, England, from 1861 to 1951. Flow Blue is a term for blue-and-white porcelain, semi-porcelain and stoneware pieces that have a blurry finish rather than a crisp pattern. The color appears to have bled or flowed onto the white surface during the firing. The process began in Staffordshire in the 1820s. The “Abbey” pattern was a transfer print of a 1790 engraving. Potters liked transfer prints because they could be used over and over. It was much cheaper and quicker than hand-painting objects. The pattern was also known as “Abbey Wreath” and made by William Adams and Co. in the 1840s. George Jones & Sons made this pattern from 1864 to 1907. It was also available in a red transferware print. Your set of Flow Blue cups and saucers might fetch $150 to $300 for the set of six.

“Abbey 1790” was a pattern used by several English potters.

* On Aug. 30, 1776, Gen. George Washington rejects British Gen. William Howe’s second letter of reconciliation. Howe had failed to use Washington’s title of “general” when addressing the letter. * On Sept. 1, 1864, renowned Confederate spy Rose O’Neal Greenhow drowns off the North Carolina coast when her craft capsizes while fleeing a Union gunboat. Greenhow was carrying Confederate dispatches and $2,000 in gold sewn into her underclothes. The weight of the gold pulled her under. * On Aug. 28, 1917, 10 women suffragists are arrested as they picket the White House to demand that President Woodrow Wilson support a Constitutional amendment guaranteeing women the right to vote. After the jailed women went on a hunger strike and had to be force fed for months, Wilson finally agreed to a suffrage amendment. * On Aug. 26, 1939, the first televised Major League baseball game is broadcast. Announcer Red Barber called the game between the Cincinnati Reds and the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field in New York. The video coverage was somewhat crude. There were only two stationary camera angles. * On Aug. 31, 1955, William Cobb of General Motors demonstrates his 15-inchlong “Sunmobile,” the world’s first solarpowered automobile, at an auto show in Chicago. * On Aug. 27, 1967, Brian Epstein, manager of the Beatles, is found dead of an accidental drug overdose in his Sussex, England, home. In 1962, Epstein was hired in a deal that gave him 25 percent of the band’s gross earnings for five years. * On Aug. 29, 2004, Brazilian distance runner Vanderlei de Lima is attacked and dragged off the course by a spectator while running the marathon in the Summer Olympics. The spectator was a defrocked Irish priest dressed in orange and green. De Lima, who held a 30-second lead when he was attacked, finished in third place.

• The rise in many allergies and inflammatory diseases was accompanied by the growth of modern civilization’s tendency to drink chlorinated water, eat sanitized food, live in concrete cities instead of farms, have smaller families, and have little contact with animals. • Households with no pets are microbial deserts compared to households with at least one cat, and in particular, at least one dog. Continued contact with these microbes develops the human microbial zoo. When dust from homes inhabited by dogs was fed to mice, the mice developed better resistance to allergens. • Even though the microbial balance has a huge impact on health, there is no concrete evidence that eating probiotic-laden foods such as yogurt, or taking probiotic capsules, has any effect whatsoever on the human microbial balance, or has any measurable effect on health.

Cross Over to Better Putting For years, any deviation from a conventional putting grip was thought to be a sign of a player having the yips or suffering from poor putting in the past. The cross handed, or left hand low, technique should really be considered a norm for any golfer who wants to putt better. If you need any proof, just look at recent Master’s champion Jordan Spieth’s putting statistics. Better yet, look at his putting performance on the world’s most difficult greens under pressure.

The left hand low set up creates two very helpful mechanics that ordinary putting techniques don’t employ. One, the left wrist becomes flat and can stay that way throughout the entire stroke. Two, the shoulders become more level to the horizon making it easier to swivel the shoulders more consistently. Try using the left hand low technique on shorter range putts to create a feel for the process. Use a conventional grip on longer putts if it ADVERTISING PROOF helps your feel. Don’t let criticism keep you from Finalbeing Changes 5:00 a betterDUE: putter!
