• In 1961, The Frito Company and H.W. Lay & Company merged to become Frito-Lay, Inc., and established their headquarters in Dallas, Texas. Plans to create and develop new snack products began immediately. • Before long, the company’s annual revenues had reached $127 million, largely generated from sales of its four main product brands at the time: Fritos, Lay’s Potato Chips, Cheetos, and Ruffles. • In 1965, the boards of directors for both FritoLay, Inc. and Pepsi-Cola announced plans for the merger of the two companies. The newly formed corporation began combined operations under the new name PepsiCo, Inc. At the time of the merger, Frito-Lay operated 46 manufacturing plants and more than 150 distribution locations covering all U.S. states. • Today PepsiCo is the largest globally distributed snack food company in the world, with sales of its products responsible for 40% of all “savory snacks” sold in the U.S. SNACK FACTS

• Lay’s chips currently uses about 8% of all the potatoes grown in the U.S. • Lay’s Potato Chips was the first snack food item advertised on television. • Lay’s flavored chips have five fewer chips per bag than Lay’s plain chips, which saves the company about $50 million a year.

• By 1956, and now with more than 1,000 employees and plants in eight cities, Herman Lay had become the largest manufacturer of potato chips and snack foods in the United States.

• While Herman Lay was continuing to expand his potato chip empire in the eastern U.S., Elmer Doolin was building his corn chip empire in the west, and each was aware of the other's competition in the bourgening snack industry. They eventually arranged to meet and discuss a way to leverage this to their mutual advantage.

more. Chef Crum then decided to add them to the menu as a novelty dish. • The other story claims that credit for the potato chip creation actually belongs to chef Crum’s sister, Katie Wicks. While Crum himself never claimed to be the originator, his sister certainly did. Her story, published in interviews and in her obituary, claims that this occured while she was assisting with potato peeling in the kitchen of the same Moon Lake Lodge. • While she was busy working, she noticed that one of the peels had fallen into the pan of hot oil and had fried crisp. After fishing it out and letting it cool, she nibbled on it out of curiosity and found it was crunchy and actually quite tasty. She decided to fry up a few more of the scraps and added salt for more flavor. She was excited with the result and brought some to her brother to sample. After a few bites, he said, “Now that’s a good accident! We always have plenty of peels to make these things.” • Whichever story is the most accurate, both accounts agree that the tasty treats originated in the same kitchen, and that the “potato chip” discovery was soon added to the menu for their guests to enjoy. Italian Sausage and Potatoes

Good Recipes from

The dynamic duo of pork sausage and peppers gets even heartier when earthy red potatoes are added. To cut out some of the fat, try this dish with turkey sausage instead.

The ricotta cheese in these Italian-style cookies keeps them moist, and the recipe yields a large batch, which is great since the baked cookies freeze so well.

ules and other PV equipment are harmful to the environment or especially carbon intensive. According to NREL (the National Renewable Energy Laboratory), a PV module will produce enough clean energy in about four years to offset the energy required to manufacture it. After a module is manufactured and installed, it will be a zero-emissions energy source for the rest of its life (which in the case of SunPower can be 40 years). The major manufacturing component of PV modules is silicon, one of the most abundant elements on earth. It is easily gathered from the top of the earth’s crust and is available all over the world, eliminating the need to transport heavy raw materials. For example, a 10kW system, the average size of a system in the Coachella Valley, should produce the energy equivalent of 20-24 barrels of oil each year. This is like saving 20,000 pounds of carbon or greenhouse gas emissions. Another way to express this system’s beneficial attributes is to say the greenhouse gas emissions it offsets are equivalent to planting about 40 mature trees each year or driving your car about 14,000 miles less than you typically would in a year.

Where do doggies come from? There is no one right way to go about finding your dog. This week, let’s shine a light on the work of responsible dog breeders and the impact it has on the dogs they bring into the world. Steve and Kelly Porter of Aldergate breed Corgis. This is their philosophy, in their words, and it explains why they are among the best: “From the moment puppies enter the world, they begin to learn and understand. At Aldergate, we work to get newborn puppies to be confident and comfortable with their surroundings. The result, we believe, is a firm foundation for training, which will ensure a happy, mentally healthy and eager-to learn-dog.” How do they build this confidence in their pups? “We concentrate on exposing every pup to as many textures and sounds and experiences with people, animals and objects as possible -- all in an effort to increase each puppy’s self-awareness and confidence.” The whole process is hands-on -- literally. Every day involves some degree of physical handling of the pups. Here’s a snapshot of what the first few weeks of a pup’s life look like in the hands of a responsible breeder: Week One: It’s all about sound. Puppies can’t hear at this early stage in their development, but they can feel the vibrations. Soft music at night, talk radio during the day, light vacuuming around the “whelping box” are all techniques put to use at Aldergate. During this week, they also begin gently placing the pups on their backs, while not keeping them away from mom for too long. Week Two: More handling! Daily activities include counting toes, trimming the hair between pads and toes, rubbing ears. This is the time to “vacuum, clean, sing, talk, turn that radio up!” Week Three: This is where things get really fun, according to the Porters. “Add ‘toys’ to the whelping box and change them throughout the day -- an empty plastic bottle, a small log, a rope with Casey's Corner: Turn to page 10

ly one-half of 1% for each month a Social Security check is taken before full retirement age. But here is an interesting and revealing point. The clickbait YOUR site says your benefit is “slashed” if taken early. The site also says you get a “generous” in SOCIAL SECURITY crease if you delay your benefits until after your full retirement age. The delayed retirement credit you by Tom Margenau get is actually two-thirds of 1% for each month you wait after FRA. And why do these clickbait sites exagger ate the downside to early retirement and overplay the upsides to delayed retirement? Because almost all of them have one goal: to get you to wait until age 70 to start your Social Security. To illustrate this further, let’s recall that I’m sure you’ve seen these teaser links on the internet that sometimes can be too irresistible other clickbait come on -- “The secret to how you to ignore. cussing how Social Security works. But when I am telling you what my wife and I did with respect to our own Social Security benefits, bear in mind that I am just another guy deciding what is best for me personally. I cannot and should not be telling you what to do. There are plenty of people out there willing to help you with that decision. And part of the reason for today’s column is to suggest you get advice from someone you trust. Don’t rely on clickbait. And speaking of people you might trust, I hear from readers all the time on this subject. In fact, just this last week or so, I received two rather passionate emails arguing diametrically opposite viewpoints. One made the point that you would be wise to wait until age 70 before starting your benefits. His arguments sounded very reasonable to me. But the other guy argued just as passionately that you should take your benefits at 62 (assuming you are already retired). He cited many reasons why that makes the most sense. His arguments also sounded very reasonable to me. Obviously, there are many factors to take into account when deciding at which age to begin your Social Security benefits. Do you think you will live to a ripe old age and will want more benefits in the long run? Wait until age 70. Are you unsure of your longevity and are looking for more cash up front? Take Social Security before then. Are you trying to guarantee higher survivor benefits for your spouse after you die? Wait until age 70. Do you and your spouse prefer to have more of that money in your early 60s as opposed to just one of you having more money later on? File at age 62. Are you the frugal type who worries about every nickel you have now and might have in the future? Wait until 70 to start your Social Security. Or are you like me: the “eat, drink and be merry” type? File early. Whatever you do, here is one bit of advice that I think you should take to heart. Gather all the facts, consider all the possibilities (including tax implications, by the way), and make the best decision you can. And then, as my wife and I are doing, enjoy the rest of your life! * * *

Electric Bikes Are Booming Among Baby Boomers DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: What can you tell me about electric bicycles? A friend of mine who is 74 recently got one and says he absolutely loves it. He seems quite excited about the freedom it gives him to get out of his home and into the community for errands and just riding for fun. Are electric bikes recommended for seniors? How much do they cost? -- Interested Boomer Dear Interested: Electric bikes have become very popular among U.S. baby boomers over the past few years because they’re super fun to ride and easier on an aging body.

trimmed in silver are not compatible with microwaves. Replacement or insurance value would be in the range of $300 to $500 for the service-for-eight dinnerware set. *** This mark is on an oak bookcase I bought at an estate sale around 1964. It is 60 inches tall, 15 inches deep and 36 inches wide. There is a single door with a copper latch; it has four stationar y shelves, and glass panes with mullions and glass sides. The mark appears to be burned into the wood. It has the original finish and is in excellent condition. Anything you can tell me about my bookcase will be appreciated.

Porcelain Dinnerware Decorated With Violets Q:

This is a picture of one of the plates in a ser vice-for-eight dinnerware set we purchased when we lived in California. Each piece is decorated with purple violets in the center and smaller violets on the scalloped borders against a white background, trimmed with silver. The dishes are marked on the back with a crown above a shield and the words “Bavaria - Schumann Arzberg - Germany.” Below the mark is a crown and the letters “E & R - Violette.” We tried researching the maker online but only found a violet pattern trimmed in gold. We hope you can help us determine the approximate time frame in which the set was made and any other information you may be able to find.

Gustav Stickley founded his Craftsman Furniture Co. in the late 1890s.

A:

You have an arts and crafts bookcase made by Gustav Stickley Craftsman Furniture. His guild-like shop existed from 1890 to 1916. The Arts and Crafts movement began in Europe and quickly spread to the United States. Stickley grew up with a strong work ethic that influenced his principles and was based in honesty and simplicity. He rebelled against the ornate, overly decorated designs of the Victorian era. His goal was to eliminate all decoration and return to sturdy, simple construction. The mark, with a joiner’s compass and the Flemish words “Als Ik Kan,” was used from 1902 to 1916. The words mean “as well as I can.” Your circa 1913 bookcase might be valued in the $7,000 to $8,000 range. * * *

“Violette” pattern was made by Carl Schumann.

A:

Carl Schumann Porcelain Factory made your porcelain dinnerware around 1960. The company was founded in Bavaria in 1881. The letters “E & R” represent distributors and importers Ebeling & Reuss. They were located in Devon and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the United States from 1866 to 2002 and imported fine china and giftware from multiple factories in Europe. “Violette” is the name of the pattern. There are several sets of your dinnerware offered online, ranging from $300 to $400. Just because they are priced at that value doesn’t mean they are actually selling. It can be difficult to find interested buyers. People prefer dishes that can be microwaved or put in the dishwasher. Dishes

Some of the 40 or so primitive tanks advanced over a mile into enemy lines, but were too slow to hold their positions and prone to mechanical breakdown. * On Sept. 12, 1940, a collection of prehistoric cave paintings is discovered near Montignac, France. Thumb Bridge Getting to a good position at the top of the swing is an orchestration of many different parts. Controlling the club’s movement and top position relies mostly on the hands and arms. Many top female players seem to have a beautiful support of the club, which can be seen temporarily in their transition to swing forward. Since it may be hard to see this illustration normally, I’ve used more of a player’s point of view without the right hand involved.
