• On November, 21, 1620, after dropping anchor in Massachusetts, and prior to leaving the ship, the colonists signed the Mayflower Compact, a written agreement that set forth the rules of government and a code of conduct, establishing legal order for the settlement.

• After docking, Commander Myles Standish led a party of armed men to explore the area and find a location for settling. A month was spent studying the region before settling on Plymouth, 77 miles away. The Mayflower anchored in Plymouth 30 on December 21, and 1 on Christmas Day, construction of dwellings began.

• Eighteen men brought their wives on the arduous journey. Three of the wives were pregnant, and one baby was born while the ship was at sea. The baby, Oceanus Hopkins, was so named for the Latin word for “ocean,” since he was born on the Atlantic. While anchored in Provincetown Harbor, Susanna White gave birth to a son, Peregrine, aboard the Mayflower, the first English child born to the Pilgrims in America.

I Can’t Get Involved in Personal Social Security Cases

Over the more than 20 years that I’ve been writing this column, I’m sure I’ve helped tens of thousands of people get a better understanding of the Social Security system. But one thing I can’t do is get involved in a reader’s personal Social Security case. Yet, every single day, I get emails from readers asking me to do just that.

One very unhappy reader told me that she is getting disability benefits but there is some kind of mix-up involving unpaid student loans. She said that the government held back some of her Social Security benefits to repay these overdue college loans. But she claims she has already paid off the loans. She asked for my help in getting her Social Security money back.

In another email, a reader went off on a long rant about how the Social Security Administration was supposedly incorrectly holding back some of her Social Security check to repay an overpayment.

I guess she’s been haggling with SSA over this issue for a long time. She wanted me get involved and “do something!”

Yet another reader told me that he had allegedly been approved for Social Security disability by a judge. But somehow that decision got reversed, and he’s trying to fight this. He wanted me to tell him why the decision was changed.

DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: What can you tell me about senior home sharing programs? I am a 76-year-old man living alone and am interested in renting out a spare room in my house for extra cash and for some help around the house. I have never done this before and could use some advice.

Dear Senior: Renting out a spare room in your house is a great way to generate some extra income and even get some help with with household chores. To find a good fit, older homeowners often turn to “home sharing programs” that will match an empty nester with someone needing affordable housing.

But be aware that home sharing isn’t for everyone. You need to carefully consider the pros and cons of renting out a spare room in your house and make a list of what you want and don’t want in a housemate/renter.

To help you figure this out visit SharingHousing.com, a website dedicated to understanding home sharing. It offers a guide and workbook ($25) to help you find and choose a good housemate.

Finding a Match

Most home sharing programs are free to use or request a small donation. Others, however, may charge the homeowner and potential renter a fee for this service. To look for a home sharing program in your area visit the National Shared Housing Resource Center website at NationalSharedHousing.org.

Other Options

If you don’t find a program that serves your area, you can also search for housemates through an online home sharing service like Silvernest.com or SeniorHomeshares.com.

These sites work more like online dating sites that require homeowners and home seekers to fill out a profile. Once a match is made, you’ll be responsible for contacting and interviewing prospective renters and making the final agreement.

If you don’t have any luck with any of these home sharing sites, put a call in to your Area Agency on Aging (call the Eldercare Locator at 800-677-1116 for contact information).

They may be able to offer assistance or refer you to local agencies or nonprofit organizations that offer shared housing help.

Style Is a Melange of Earlier Designs

As one of the oldest porcelain factories in Germany, the company survived turmoil, world wars and changes in management and owners. In the beginning, their high-quality porcelain was intended for royalty. They soon realized the advantage of providing porcelain for the public.

In the late 1800s, the company branched out and began making more than dinnerware, coffee and tea sets. It introduced novelty series including Sunbonnet Babies, Devil and Cards, Shell Shapes, Art Nouveau Lady, Rose Tapestry, Santa Claus and the Tomato figural pieces.

Royal Bayreuth has used several marks over the years. The mark you provided was used beginning in 1900.

Enclosed is a photo of an antique chair I purchased in 1969 in Columbus, Ohio.

The elaborately car ved frame is walnut. When I cleaned it with Murphy Oil Soap, the color really came alive. It was originally upholstered with needlepoint and stuffed with horsehair.

There was a myriad of revivals of ear lier design periods in the late 1800s and very early 1900s. You have an early 20th-century revival armchair that reflects a batch of styles, including 18th century English, French rococo and baroque furniture.

Your ornately scrolled, carved frame embellished with the Ornate, oak-carved arm chair was made in the early 1900s.. carved shell motif represents this melange of styles.

Impact with a golf ball may be one of the most mysterious actions in any sport due to the speed of the swing and the conditions of the ball and club design. One of the great myths in golf is that the impact position should mirror the address position.
