• In 1929, astronomer Forest Ray Moulton performed calculations on the energy expended by the meteorite on impact. He reached the well-documented conclusion that the meteorite had most likely entirely vaporized on impact. He theorized that the massive ball of iron that Barringer had been searching for did not exist. His exhaustive report contained 127 pages of solid research conclusions and mathematical analysis that could not be refuted.

(from page one)
• The chicken is the most industrialized animal in history, and Americans consume more chicken than any other country in the world. Over 8.6 billion chickens are eaten every year in the U.S., while about 40 billion are consumed annually worldwide. CHICKENS GLOBALIZED
• The earliest records of chickens indicate they originated in Asia, where they were domesticated and carried worldwide on trade ships. It is thought that Christopher Columbus was the first to introduce chickens in North America. When he tasted roasted iguana in the Bahamas, it's possible that he was the first to utter the words, “Hmm.. tastes like chicken.” • The pilgrims brought chickens with them to Jamestown in 1607, and by 1609 they had a flock of up to 500 birds. • In the 1700s it was illegal for slaves in the U.S. to own livestock including hogs, cattle, or horses, but they could raise chickens, allowing them to sell the meat, feathers, and eggs. * It was novelist, poet and playwright Gertrude Stein who made the following sage observation: “Everybody knows if you are too careful, you are so preoccupied with being careful that you are sure to stumble over something.” * Up until the 1500s, the accepted way of dealing with a patient who was hemorrhaging was to cauterize the wound, often with boiling oil or red-hot irons. It was in the latter part of the 16th century that a French surgeon named Ambroise Pare began tying off the broken blood vessels with cord. That’s pretty much what surgeons do today. * Some people enjoy novelty when dining out, but restaurateurs take a big risk when adding new items to a menu; it seems that less than a third of diners will actually try a new menu item.

Whether you live in a house, apartment, condo, home or dorm room, havby mobile Mary Hunt ing enough electrical outlets to handle all of the accessories, appliances and tools you need can be a challenge. And that’s when knowing how to safely use a power strip sure comes in handy. While one of these devices can offer a reasonable solution for too few outlets, it’s a mistake to rely on power strips too much. Or to use them incorrectly. For safety’s sake, never plug these items into a power strip.
HAIRDRESSING APPLIANCES You need ‘em hot and ready to go, which makes a power strip on the bathroom counter pretty much a godsend when you have only one * The White House was not designed by an American. Plugging them into a power strip is just asking for trouble. * The name of the state of Vermont These types of hairdressing appliances must be comes from the French “mont vert,” which means “green mountain.” (If the explorers plugged directly into a wall outlet -- preferably who named the state saw green mounone with a ground-fault circuit interrupter breaker tains, they obviouslyADVERTISING were not there in the PROOF to avoid danger should those tools accidentally winter.) risk of tripping a breaker. COFFEE MAKER It seems pretty lightweight to heat up water, right? Not so fast. Most coffee makers need a good deal of amperage to turn gloriously roasted coffee beans into a hot beverage -- more than a power strip can guarantee to deliver. Make sure you plug the machine directly into a wall outlet. TOASTER Here’s the clue: It has exposed wires inside those slots that heat up to become redhot. It takes a lot of current to fire up those wires, which can easily overload a power strip. So, no, do not plug your toaster into an extension cord or power strip. Ditto for your toaster oven. SLOW COOKER I agree this is counterintuitive; wouldn’t you think a slow cooker uses microscopic bits of power? In this case, it’s not the amount of amperage but the length of time requiring continuous power. A power strip cannot guarantee to deliver that kind of energy. Plug the slow cooker safely into a wall outlet before you set it and forget it. ANOTHER POWER STRIP Power strips do not play well together. While it might seem smart to plug one power strip into another as a way of multiplying the number of outlets available, it’s really dumb -super dangerous, and violates every fire safety code out there. QUICK CHECKLIST OF DO’S AND DON’TS Power strips are fine in moderation as long as you observe proper power strip safety. The folks at Kolb Electric offer us this handy do’s and don’ts checklist so we can know when and how to use a power strip safely. Their advice: “Do. Only use light-load appliances on power strips. This can include computers, lamps, clocks, etc. “Do. Ensure that you purchase power strips with an internal circuit breaker. This is a very important safety measure that is designed to prevent property loss and risks of fire! “Do. Use power strips sparingly. They aren’t designed to maintain a load for extended periods of time, and can overheat quickly if used too frequently. “Don’t. Ever plug a power strip into another power strip (colloquially referred to as ‘daisy chaining’). Doing this is a great way to short out appliances, or drastically increase the risk of an electrical mishap. “Don’t. Use power strips in moist or potentially moist areas. No kitchens, no bathrooms, no utility rooms, and definitely no basements. “Don’t. Continue to use a power strip if it feels hot. That is a definite warning of danger! “Never. Cover, staple, tack or nail a power strip to anything. Covering can smother the strip, and provide ample flammable material in the event of failure, and stapling can harm the cords, making for dangerous situations.” TRIVIA AIVIRT * * * TRIVIA NEWSFRONT ANSWERS NEWSFRONT ANSWERS S R E W S N A T N O RFSWE N tips at Mary invites questions, comments and EverydayCheapskate.com, 1. Traditional Roast Turkey with Pan Gravy
Here it is, the traditional Thanksgiving centerpiece: turkey
1 (14-pound) fresh or frozen (thawed) 1 medium onion, cut into 1-inch chunks 2 stalks celery, cut into 1-inch chunks 1/2 bunch fresh parsley 1 bunch fresh sage 1 bunch fresh thyme 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper Pan Gravy
1. Heat oven to 325 F. Remove neck from inside turkey; reserve for making pan gravy. Discard giblets and liver or save for another use. Rinse turkey with cold running water; pat dry with paper towels. 2. Place onion, celery, parsley and 1/2 bunch each of sage and thyme (wrap and refrigerate remaining herbs to garnish platter) inside body and neck cavities of turkey. Fasten neck skin to back with 1 or 2 skewers. With turkey breast-side up, fold wings under back of turkey so they stay in place. If drumsticks are not held by band of skin or a stuffing clamp, tie legs together with string. 3. Place turkey, breast-side up, on small rack in large (17 by 11 1/2-inch) roasting pan. Rub turkey all over with salt and pepper. Insert meat thermometer into thickest part of thigh next to body, being careful that pointed end of thermometer does not touch bone. Cover turkey with a loose tent of foil, letting top of thermometer poke through foil. Roast turkey about 3 3/4 hours; start checking for doneness during last hour of roasting.

8-cup liquid measuring cup or medium bowl. Let stand 1 minute or until fat separates from drippings. Spoon 2 tablespoons fat from drippings into 3-quart saucepan; skim and discard any remaining fat from drippings. 4. Add 1 cup broth to roasting pan. Place pan over medium-high heat and stir until browned bits are loosened and liquid boils; boil 1 minute. Strain liquid into drippings in measuring cup. Add enough water to meat-juice mixture in cup to equal 3 1/2 cups total. 5. Stir 1/4 cup all-purpose flour and 1/2 teaspoon salt into fat in saucepan; cook over medium heat until flour turns golden brown, stirring. Gradually stir in drippings mixture and cook until gravy boils and thickens slightly, stirring occasionally. Stir in reserved meat; heat through. Pour gravy into gravy boat or serving bowl. Makes 12 servings.

Daughter Got Measles Despite Vaccination DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter is 4 years old and has, in the past five days, developed measles. She was vaccinated at 9 months and has been treated with antibiotics, Tylenol and vitamin A supplements. What concerns me is that she is now experiencing seizures, even without a fever. They are not grand mal seizures, but simple ones. They have me worried. What can I do? -- G.A.
is treated with steroids. This reduces the risk of permanent brain damage from the infection. Even so, 25% of children may be left with some impairment, including epilepsy. Unfortunately, vaccination at nine months is not adequate protection. Children’s immune systems may not be able to fully respond to the vaccine so early. Children are recommended to have the measles vaccine at 12-15 months and again at 4 to 6 years in the United States. In countries where risk of measles mortality remains high, children are vaccinated at 9 months, then again at 15-18 months. During an outbreak, a dose may be given as early as 6 months old, in addition to the other two doses. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I get horrible fever blisters when I go on any tropical vacation and am exposed to lasting sun. These blisters develop on my lower lip. I have tried sunscreen, but nothing has worked. On my most recent trip, the blisters appeared on the final day and took nearly three weeks to heal. It’s painful and horribly embarrassing. Is there anything I can do? Jobs and Careers for Military Spouses If you are debating whether to re-up and one of your concerns is your spouse’s employment opportunities, perhaps the Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP) program will help you decide. There are currently 350,000 job listings for military spouses on the MSEP website. In a partnership with 390 employers, the Department of Veterans Affairs has expanded opportunities as part of its Department of Defense MSEP program. Those employers have committed to hire, promote, recruit and retain military spouses in portable jobs. At this point they have hired over 134,000 military spouses. Portable means you can take your skills with you, possibly to one of the many other employers in the program, should you need to relocate. There are big names in the list, but not just retailers or convenience stores. Also included are organizations with community networks that provide career resources and mentoring, and federal agency partners. The program is part of the Spouse Education and Career Opportunities program that aims to reduce the horrible 25% wage gap that military spouses face. It offers career guidance, education, resources, tools, training, licensing and more. To search for open jobs, go online to msepjobs.militar yonesource.mil/msep and click Search Jobs, or call 800-342-9647 to speak to a career coach. You’ll need to sign up. Once you reach your personal online dashboard, you can search by location or special skills. Or if you think you’re not quite ready to land a job, go online to myseco.militar yonesource.mil. Click on career exploration, education and training, and employment readiness. Do not miss the list of coaching packages further down the page. They have everything to get you ready, some very specialized: health care coaching package, cybersecurity coaching package, K-12 education coaching package and more.

ADVICE Answers to YOUR Financial, Medicare and Health Insurance questions.
You should also know that while there are many gambling options for people to get hooked on today, casino slot machines are far and away the most popular among seniors. Today's slot machines are much more addictive than the old spinning lemons, cherries and melons of yesteryear. Many of today’s slot machines offer intense sensory stimulation with large video screens, music and vibrating, ergonomic chairs.

DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: I’m worried that my 79-year-old father has become addicted to gambling. He spends at least two days a week at an Indian casino about a half-hour’s drive from his house playing slot machines. I'm sure he's spending a lot of money he can't afford to lose. Or they may be confused or embarrassed that they can’t control their urges to gamble and reluctant to seek help because they think that at their age, they should know better. And even if they recognize that they have a problem, they may not know that help is available or where to get it.
Staying overnight in a hospital doesn’t always mean you’re an inpatient. Your doctor must order your hospital admission and the hospital must formally admit you for you to be an inpatient. Without the formal inpatient admission, you’re still an outpatient, even if you stay overnight in a regular hospital bed, and/ or you’re getting emergency department services, observation services, outpatient surgery, lab tests, or X-rays. You or your caregiver should always ask the hospital and/or your doctor if you’re an inpatient or an outpatient each day during your stay, since it affects what you pay and can affect whether you’ll qualify for Part A coverage in a skilled nursing facility. You can also ask a hospital social worker or patient advocate if you’re unsure.

YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau
Filing Date Still Confuses Readers Even after writing several recent columns about the issue, I still get many emails from readers confused about which date to choose as the starting date for their Social Security retirement benefits. The confusion essentially centers around the fact that Social Security checks are paid one month behind. For example, the Social Security payment for November will be sent to you in December. That’s a relatively straightforward rule, but it leads to all kinds of problems, especially when people are filing for their Social Security benefits online. Here is a typical example:
Q:
I will be 66 in Februar y 2020. I don’t want any reduced benefits, so I want to make sure my checks start at age 66. The online application is asking me which month I want to start my benefits. I know checks come one month behind, so I’m afraid if I put down Februar y as my starting month, that will be the Januar y Social Security check, meaning I will get a reduced amount for starting my benefits before age 66. So should I indicate March as my starting month?
A:
You turn 66 in February. So if you want your benefits to begin when you are 66, you should indicate February as your starting month. In other words, don’t concern yourself with the month your Social Security check is actually delivered to you. The application question isn’t asking, “Which month do you want your first check to be sent to you?” Instead, it is essentially asking you this: “Which month do you want to be your first month of eligibility for Social Security benefits?” And again, in your case, that is February 2020. In some cases, people sent me their questions after the fact. And it’s causing them all kinds of undue stress. Here is an example of that:
Q:
I was 65 in September, and that’s when I wanted my Social Security to start. But the question on the online form confused me, and I thought if I indicated August as the starting check, knowing that it would come in September, then September would be my starting month. But then I got a letter from Social Security telling me that my benefits had started in August, one month before my 65th birthday, meaning I now will get a reduced benefit for the rest of my life. Please help me. What can I do about this?
A:
What you can do is relax. You made a little goof. You can correct it if you want. But really, it’s not that big a deal, so you may want to just let things ride. You didn’t give me your benefit amount, but let’s assume your age 65 benefit rate would have been $2,200 per month. But you mistakenly started your Social Security at age 64 years and 11 months. Retirement benefits are reduced fiveninths of 1% for each month they are taken early. So your monthly rate (with an August start date) might be about $2,185 or so. In other words, you will lose around $15 per month forever. But on the
plus side, you got that one extra $2,185 Social Security check for August. It will take you about 145 months, or more than 12 years, before you come out on the short end of the stick by making this minor error in your starting date. Or to put that another way, you will be 77 years old before this mistake catches up with you. If I were you, I wouldn’t worry about it, and I’d just let things go. But if it is going to bother you, you can contact the Social Security Administration and tell them you want to withdraw your original claim and file a new claim with September as your starting date. If you do that, you will have to return the Social Security checks you’ve already received. Now here is a question from someone who also made a mistake, but in the opposite direction:
Q:
Page 17
that long.) You didn’t give dollar amounts, but let’s say your age 66 benefit would have been $2,500 per month. With this one extra delayed retirement credit, you might get 20 bucks or so added to your check each month. That’s the good news. The bad news is that you lost one check (the September payment). It’s going to take you about 10 years to make up that one benefit payment you lost. So, if you think you’re going to live past age 76, you will actually come out ahead because of this mistake you made. And finally, here is a question about filing dates with a bit of a twist:
Q:
I was 62 on August 15. I filed for my Social Security to start when I turned 62. I expected my first benefit payment (the August check) to come in September. But I didn’t get my first check until October. Did I do something wrong?
Oh, my gosh! I don’t know what to do! I turned 66 in September. I hope you can tell me something about its maker, age and value, if any.
Vol. XV Issue 48
A:
Wilhelm Greiner and Johann Schmidt founded Porcelain Factory Tettau in Tettau, Bavaria, Germany, in 1794. The factory was known as Royal Tettau Porcelain from 1902 to 1957. It is also known as Royal Bayreuth porcelain. Your platter was made in the United States zone of Germany during the 1945 to 1949 occupation of Germany after World War II. by Anne McCollam
Roses Blossom on Jardiniere Q:
This is a photo of a porcelain jardiniere that has been in our family since the early 1900s. It stands about 8 inches tall and 12 inches in diameter and is in perfect condition. It is decorated with hand-painted pink roses, trimmed with gold and has a reticulated rim. On the bottom, there is a crown above a circle with scrolled W’s and the words “Royal Worcester -- England.” Below the mark are 23 dots. Our jardiniere is a family treasure and we plan to have it insured. Any information you can provide on the age, maker and value will be appreciated.
Royal Tettau Porcelain was founded in 1794.
Your platter can be found online at one of the china replacement services for $139.95. If you plan to sell your platter, it would be difficult to sell at that price. There is little demand for vintage porcelain. If you need an insurance value, it would be in the area of $150 to $175.

* On Nov. 28, 1520, after sailing for weeks through the dangerous straits below South America that now bear his name, Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan enters the Pacific Ocean with three ships, becoming the first European explorer to reach the Pacific from the Atlantic. * On Nov. 27, 1703, an unusual storm system finally dissipates over England after wreaking havoc for nearly two weeks. Featuring hurricane-force winds, the storm killed between 10,000 and 30,000 people. Hundreds of Royal Navy ships and their crews were lost to the storm. * On Nov. 29, 1929, American explorer Richard Byrd and three companions make the first flight over the South Pole, flying from their base on the Ross Ice Shelf to the pole and back in 18 hours and 41 minutes. Byrd learned how to fly in the U.S. Navy and served as a pilot in World War I. * On Nov. 30, 1939, the Soviet Red Army invades the tiny nation of Finland with 465,000 men and 1,000 aircraft. Helsinki was bombed, and 61 Finns were killed in an air raid, sparking fierce Finnish resistance. * On Nov. 26, 1942, “Casablanca,” a World War II-era romantic drama starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, premieres in New York City. The Oscar-winning film featured a number of now-iconic quotes, including “Here’s looking at you, kid.”
The Hadley Roses pattern was the creation of Royal Worcester artist and designer James Hadley.
* On Dec. 1, 1959, 12 nations sign the Antarctica Treaty, which bans military activity and weapons testing on that continent. It was the first arms-control agreement signed during the Cold War.
A:
Royal Worcester Porcelain was estab lished in Worcester, England, in 1751. The name of the hand painted-pattern is Hadley Roses. The pattern was the creation of one of Royal Worcester’s finest modelers and designers, James Hadley. Most pieces were signed. You might closely examine your jardiniere for a signature. The 23 dots below the mark show your jardiniere was made in 1914. Your jardiniere has an insurance value of $1,500 to $2,500. *** This mark is green and on the back of an oval porcelain platter that I have. It is decorated with sprigs of violets and green leaves against a cream background and edged in gold. The shape is oval and about 16 inches long. It is in mint condition; there are no chips or crazing.
* On Nov. 25, 1963, three days after his assassination in Dallas, President John F. Kennedy is laid to rest with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. Kennedy was shot to death while riding in an open-car motorcade. He was 46.

• Today, a typical independent chicken farmer produces almost half a million broilers per year, yet it’s estimated today that two-thirds of people who raise chickens for a living live below the poverty line. • The difference between white meat and dark meat is the amount of myoglobin in the tissue, a protein used to deliver oxygen to muscles. The more a muscle is used, the more myoglobin it has and the darker the meat. • Chickens in cages are sometimes set out in cages in public parks in order to be bitten by mosquitoes so that their blood can be tested for West Nile virus.

• In 1879, Pasteur took a break, leaving the cholera-infected chicken heads lying on shelves in his lab, exposed to sunlight and air. When he returned months later, he tried to take cultures from the dried-out chicken heads, but was disappointed to find that the healthy live chickens he tried to infect with cholera would get sick, but wouldn’t die. He then had to go out and find dead chickens who had recently died from the cholera and begin the tedious culture harvesting all over again.
• But when the same group of chickens who had previously refused to die of cholera would fail to even get sick when infected with a fresh virulent strain of the disease, it was an “aha!” moment for Pasteur. It was from this chance discovery that the very first vaccines were developed, thus changing the course of modern medicine.

Fighting gusty days on the course can be a frustrating experience for many golfers. Any slight curves can be swept offline, so trajectory control is a major concern if you’re trying to keep the ball in play. There are three simple steps to hitting those piercing, driving shots into the wind: 1. Take at least one club extra, perhaps two, so the lower loft aids you in your effort to hit the ball lower. By trying to hit “too much club”, you won’t be forced to swing very hard, which helps keep the spin rates down as well. 2. Grip down around an inch and stand slightly closer than normal. Don’t adversely adjust the ball position, so keep the rest of your set-up fairly normal. By gripping down, you’ll effectively stiffen the club shaft further improving the odds of hitting it low. Soft flex shafts help “kick” the ball up in the air. 3. Abbreviate the follow through by extending the arms through impact. High finishes usually equal higher trajectory shots, therefore picture a ADVERTISING three-quarter finish.
