They shoved Semple to the ground while shouting at Switzer to “run like hell!” A photograph of

Predictably, the public rejected the banana-flavored fried chicken, except for a single food chain in Florida whose customers ate every last one. All banana dinners were recalled and sent to Florida.

• Undeterred, Kingsford started experimenting with corn at home on his own time. He tried one thing after another. One day he mixed corn mush with wood-ash lye. It failed, and he dumped the results into a garbage pail. Next he tried mixing the corn mush with a solution of lime, a calcium-rich mineral that comes from heating limestone. This failed too, and he dumped the glop on top of the previous failure in the garbage can. • A few days later as he was emptying the garbage can he was amazed to notice a layer of perfectly white starch on the bottom. The lye and the lime he had discarded had caused a chemical reaction with the corn mush mixture and produced pure corn starch. Furthermore, the corn had yielded far more starch than wheat.

* It was 20th-century American author Margaret Mitchell -- best known, of course, for her Civil War-era novel “Gone With the Wind” -- who made the following sage observation: “Until you’ve lost your reputation, you never realize what a burden it was or what freedom really is.”

® If you’ve been reading this column for any length of time, you know that my husband and I by Mary Hunt have repaired or performed regular maintenance on a number of our home appliances. And I love hearing when my readers do the same. Today’s first great reader tip is a good reminder for anyone with a dishwasher.

• In 1973, employees at United Canning in Ohio found that some cans of mushrooms looked swollen. This is never good news, and testing revealed that those canned mushrooms were contaminated with botulism, a disease that causes grave illness and can result in death. • Per FDA regulations, the company issued a recall of the product. Then they had to track down other companies that had purchased the contaminated mushrooms for use in other products. And that led them to Mario Fabbrini. • Fabbrini had moved to Michigan from his native Italy after World War II ended. He and his wife began making and selling pizzas, first in Detroit where they became one of the country’s first pizzarias to offer free delivery. After selling that business, he set up shop in Alpena, Michigan, where he began producing and selling frozen pizzas. He supplied local bars with frozen pizzas and even included a small oven to cook them in. Business boomed and Papa Fabbrini’s Frozen Pizzas became a popular item.

LOCKSMITHING

• But a few weeks later it was announced that the botulism scare had all been a big mistake. Autopsies on the dead mice showed they had not died of botulism after all, and Fabbrini’s pizzas had not been contaminated as believed. • Fabbrini’s cost of burying the pizzas had amounted to over $30,000. His business suffered greatly as the public was now wary of the health health hazard associated with his pizzas. Opportunists had moved into his markets selling their own brand of pizzas. His business was on a rapid downhill spiral.

Though skeptical, she tried it several times a day on travel days. “Sixteen flights and not a sniffle!” Businesswoman Rosaleen says when people are sick around her she uses CopperZap morning and night. “It saved me last holidays,” she said. “The kids had colds going round and round, but not me.” Some users say it also helps with sinuses. Attorney Donna Blight had a 2-day sinus headache. When her CopperZap arrived, she tried it. “I am shocked!” she said. “My head cleared, no more headache, no more congestion.” Some users say copper stops (paid advertisement)

nighttime stuffiness if used just before bed. One man said, “Best sleep I’ve had in years.” Copper may even stop flu if used early and for several days. Lab technicians placed 25 million live flu viruses on a CopperZap. No viruses were alive soon after. People have used it on cold sores and say it can completely prevent ugly outbreaks. You can also rub it gently on wounds, cuts, or lesions to combat infections. Copper even kills deadly germs that are resistant to antibiotics. If you’ve been near sick people, a moment using it may keep serious infection away. It may even save a life. The EPA says copper still works even when tarnished. It kills hundreds of different disease germs so it can prevent serious or even fatal illness. CopperZap is made in the U.S. of pure copper. It has a 90-day full money back guarantee when used as directed to stop a cold. It is $69.95 but you get $10 off each CopperZap with code TBCA11. Go to www.CopperZap.com or 1-888-411-6114. Buy once, use forever.

Q:

That sounds really good. Now what about that Federal Tax Credit? If you lease your panels, then the tax credit goes to the company that’s providing the panels, but it’s reflected in lower payments for you. If you decide to purchase, the tax credit comes to you, and if you get a loan from SunPower (also $0 down), then the tax credit comes to you as well, although you will probably want to use it towards your loan payment so you can pay off the panels as quickly as possible with your savings and then enjoy free power for up to 40 years, the expected life of the panels. Yellow Journalism People who have little dogs tend to agonize like Hamlet over the question of: To housebreak, or to paper train? Those with big dogs don’t think twice about it. Owners of Great Danes and Newfoundlands unanimously agree that they don’t want their dogs doing their business in the house. Which is exactly what paper training is: teaching your dog to do his business in the house. The truth about paper training is that you really can’t do it. Not successfully. Not consistently. It isn’t natural. In fact, it goes against a dog’s very nature. Dogs are territorial. When walking your dog, I’m sure you’ve noticed that his sniffer kicks into overdrive. That’s what dogs do: They go outside, they sniff around, they lift their leg and they mark their territory. Usually, they mark more than one spot. Left to their own devices, they’d mark many more spots than the average dog owner will tolerate on a single excursion. Paper training your dog means expecting him to go on the same spot every day, day after day, month and month, year after year, without fail. It means asking him to forgo a very basic instinct. This is why housebreaking is the better choice for big dogs and small dogs. Housebreaking is teaching your dog to do his business outside and only outside. It allows your dog to be a dog, and it allows your house to remain clean, sanitary and free of unpleasant surprises. I talked to a man with a 7-year-old Yorkie the other day. From Day One, his dog was paper trained. And those piddle pads worked for four years, when suddenly and without warning, everything changed. This man and his wife spent the next three and a half years dodging puddles and picking up poop. Now, their house stinks, their carpets are a mess, and they called me right after the straw broke the camel’s back. That’s right. He stepped in it. When you have a little dog, it’s easy to get lazy. And paper training is the lazy man’s solution to the age-old question of what to do when your dog has to go. Plop some newspaper on the kitchen floor and call it yellow journalism. YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

One Year Left to Jump Through the Restricted Claim Loophole Anyone turning 66 this year who has a spouse already collecting Social Security or who is potentially eligible for benefits should consider jumping through the loophole that slams shut in 2020. Or to be more precise, the loophole that closes for anyone turning 66 in January 2020 or later. What’s the loophole? It’s the rule that allows 66-year-old retirees to collect spousal benefits on a husband’s or wife’s Social Security record while letting their own benefit continue to grow until age 70, at which point they get a 32 percent bonus added to their monthly retirement checks. Some may wonder: Why is this considered a loophole and why is it closing? Normal Social Security rules do not allow a retiree to get spousal benefits if his or her own rate is higher. After all, benefits to a spouse are classified as dependent benefits. In other words, you generally don’t get such benefits unless you were financially dependent on your spouse. Obviously, someone who worked and earned his or her own retirement benefit that is higher than any spousal rate that might be due should not be considered “dependent” on the other spouse. But a fluke in the language written into some amendments to a Social Security law that passed in the 1990s opened up that loophole and allowed millions of generally well-to-do retirees to “game the system” and collect dependent spousal benefits between age 66 and 70 before switching to 132 percent of their own. A couple years ago, Congress finally recognized their mistake. But instead of sealing up the loophole immediately, they established the January 2020 closing date. So again, if you are 66 before then, you might want to consider filing a restricted claim. Filing a what? -- you may ask. Well, that calls for some more explanation. Social Security rules have always included a “deemed application” policy. In other words, when you file for one kind of Social Security benefit, you are deemed to be filing for any and all other benefits you might be due. So that is why you normally cannot file for spousal benefits without filing for your own retirement benefits at the same time. But what that 1990s loophole in the law did was to allow someone who was 66 or older to ignore that deemed filing rule. It allowed retirees to “restrict the scope of their Social Security application to spousal benefits only.” In other words, you could file for spousal benefits now and delay taking your own benefits until later. I’ve been calling that procedure the “file and restrict” method. But again, that law is changing for people turning 66 beginning in January 2020. Today’s questions come from people turning 66 before then who are lucky enough to use the loophole.

Q:

I will turn 66 on Jan. 1, 2020. My wife is 64 and started taking her Social Security at age 62. Based on ever ything I’ve read, I guess I’m out of luck and can’t file for husband’s benefits on her record while delay-

I was planning to discussed in this column before the strange little delay taking my Social Security until age 70. quirk in the law that says you legally attain your age on the day before your actual birthday. That But I just did the math, and I think I will be normally means nothing. For example, I will be ahead to start my benefits now. Do you think 70 on June 22 of this year. But I legally turn 70 on that’s a good idea? By the way, my wife is 66 June 21. That’s no big deal to me and to most other and still working and she is also thinking of waiting until 70 to file for her Social Security. people. But it’s a huge deal, from a Social Security I’m not a financial advisor. So I really perspective, if you were born on the 1st day of the can’t tell you what to do. But I can give you some month. The Benefits of Aspirin DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently read an article on the pros and cons of a daily aspirin for protection against both heart disease and colon cancer. This is not a new topic, I realize, and I know that the benefits of daily aspirin apply only to certain segments of the population.

Does he have difficulty seeing, backing up or changing lanes? Does he react slowly, get confused easily or make poor driving decisions? potter y pitcher that I have. It stands 8 inches tall and is decorated with a matte-orange peel glaze. No one in our family knows anything about its histor y. We just know we have had it for years. Anything you can tell us about our pitcher will be appreciated.

by Anne McCollam

Teapot Is as Cute as the Dickens Q:

This is a picture of a potter y teapot that we have had for decades. It stands 6 inches tall, is over 7 inches from handle to spout and is in excellent condition. Marked on the bottom are the words “Peggally -- Beswick -- England -- 1116.” We have been in the process of auctioning off our heirlooms and would like to have an idea of the value of our teapot.

Muncie Pottery was founded in 1922.

A: Your pitcher was made by Muncie Pot-

tery in Muncie, Indiana. Charles Benham, along with designer and master mold maker Boris Trifonoff, opened the pottery in 1922. After Trifonoff left in 1924, James Willkins joined as head ceramist and created new drip glazes and molds. Unlike several other potteries in the early 1900s, Muncie pottery pieces were not decorated with surface paintings. The innovative glazes were beautiful and set apart from other pottery art lines. From 1922 to 1925, the pottery was unmarked. In 1925, decorators signed their work with either a letter or a specific mark. After 1927, “Muncie” was stamped on the work. Muncie Pottery closed in 1939. Your pitcher would probably be worth $75 to $125. * * *

Beswick Pottery was located in Staffordshire, England.

A:

Take another look at the bottom of your hand-painted teapot. It should say “Peggotty,” rather than “Peggally.” You have a figural teapot that was made by Beswick Pottery in Staffordshire, England. The face of your teapot is that of Mr. Peggotty, a character from the novel “David Copperfield” by Charles Dickens. The number “1116” is the model number. Your teapot was designed by Arthur Gredington around 1946. It was in production until it was discontinued in 1973. Beswick Pottery was founded by James Wright Beswick in the 1890s, and after he passed away, his grandson, John Beswick, joined the firm. Beginning in 1933, most pieces were marked with the model number. Beswick Pottery is very wellknown for its animal figurines, especially the equestrian figurines. Beswick was sold to Royal Doulton and Co. in 1989. Your figural teapot is circa 1946, and it can be found for sale on the internet for $25 to $50. * * * This mark is on the bottom of a

• Dutch traders then turned their attention to the town of Cognac, 60 miles north. The wine produced there was not as good as Bordeaux wine, but there were no tariffs on it at all. • In order to maximize profits, the Dutch decided to burn off some of the extra water in the wine by distilling it. They could fit twice as much of this concentrated wine on their ships. The plan was to reconstitute it once they arrived at their destination.
