sansevieria trifasciata, nicknamed “snake plant” or “mother-in-law’s tongue” (best nickname ever), likes full sun to low light source and even moisture. It will survive even under the most severely neglectful conditions. Sansevieria trifasciata is prized for its stiff, upright leaves that range from 1 to 8 feet tall, depending on the variety. KNOW WHERE TO BUY I’m a huge fan of the Walmart and Target garden departments. Home improvement centers like Home Depot and Lowe’s are excellent sources as well. Just look for the bargain table and you’ll run right into the plants on my list above. KNOW WHEN TO WATER Unlike silk and plastic, live houseplants do require water, and watering weekly is good. Pick a day, any day -- and then water your plants on the same day every week. Don’t overdo it. KNOW YOUR MAINTENANCE Keep the leaves of your plants clean. Dust plugs the pores and prevents plants from taking in the carbon dioxide from the air. A damp cloth once every few weeks will do the trick. Live plants are an inexpensive way to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere in any living space. As a bonus, they improve indoor air quality. Select plants that require little or no care, and you’ll save yourself both time and money. * * * ADVERTISING PROOF Would you like more information? Go to MON., AUG. 19

7 Houseplants That Are Really Hard to Kill
* It was American journalist, author and humorist Don Marquis who made the following sage observation: “Procrastination is the art of keeping up with yesterday.”

I love houseplants, and I do have some beauties! The truth is I don’t have a green thumb; ® I just know a few tricks and tips that I will gladly share with you. Healthy, beautiful houseplants by Mary Hunt are an economical way to bring instant warmth and beauty to a home, condo, apartment, dorm room, recreational vehicle -- or wherever else you call home. I have friends who, I swear, were born with a green thumb. These talented people effortlessly grow lush, beautiful, exotic plants indoors. Then, there are the rest of us. Here’s my best-kept horticultural secret: I only consider plants in what I call the “thrivus neglectus” family, which comes from the Latin root meaning “really cheap and thrives even under the harshest conditions of poor light and owner neglect.” KNOW YOUR VARIETIES If growing beautiful houseplants in your home or office isn’t your forte, I have good news. It is possible to have lovely plants if you pick the right variety -- those that are hard to kill. The second largest pitcher plant on record, nepenthes attenboroughii secretes a nectar that lures insects, frogs and even rats into its trap, where enzymes and acids break down the animal and digest it. * There has been a lot of debate about whether older drivers should be required to pass driving tests in order to renew their licenses, with failing sight and diminished judgment being cited as reasons for the more stringent requirement. However, statistics tend to indicate that, as a group, teenagers are the more dangerous drivers, with their auto-accident death rate roughly triple that of seniors. * The men’s formal attire known as the tuxedo takes its name from the Tuxedo Park Club in New York, where the clothing first became popular. The futuristic space comedy brought to you by Seth MacFarlane (“Family Guy”), who not only created the show but also stars in it, will be back for a third season, but not until late 2020. Sorry, a specific day or even month hasn’t been pinned down, but MacFarlane explained at the San Diego Comic-Con last summer that “the show has evolved and become more ambitious production-wise,” and that the delay between seasons would be “challenging for the network [Fox].” Hence, a deal was struck with Hulu to air Seth MacFarland the third in “The Orville” season exclusively after a long hiatus. Hulu had been streaming “The Orville” after it aired on Fox, and apparently it was a big hit with its subscribers. According to Deadline.com, Craig Erwich, Hulu senior vice president of original programming, stated: “The Orville has a very loyal following on Hulu, so when there was an opportunity to bring a new season to our viewers, we jumped at it. I will see the first episode next week. We’ll monitor and evaluate the show as it goes.” *** Is it true that the Silver Surfer character will be in Mar vel’s next Thor movie? -- J.B.

The dictionary defines etymology as the history of a word shown by tracing its development since its earliest recorded occurrence in the language where it is found. Here are some examples:
• Although it’s commonly thought that the phrase “bite the bullet” refers to biting down on a bullet during a painful operation, doctors would have known better than to put a small object into the mouth of someone who might swallow it and choke. The phrase more likely originates from the British Enfield rifle, which required a soldier to bite off the top of the bullet to expose the charge prior to being loaded.

afford the care of a good doctor, Clinton sent him some money and wished him well. A year later, the recovered chemist walked through Clinton’s door to thank him, and to ask what he could do for him in return. Clinton said, “Find me a way to make a better brushless shaving cream!” Carl promised to try, and went to work.
TIDBITS REMEMBERS
A Piece Of
Americana
• One day two years later, after nearly 300 attempts and as many failed results, Clinton was re-trying the contents in some of the rejected jars. When he applied the mixture from jar #43, to his amazement it actually worked -and Burma-Shave was born!
by Bernard Blammo
If you’re of a certain age group that still remembers those clever Burma-Shave signs that once dotted the two-lane roadsides of America’s highways and biways, Tidbits thought you’d appreciate a nostalgic look into this pleasant little slice from America’s past. If you’re too young to remember Burma-Shave at all, follow along and learn how this once-iconic brand name grew to become a part of American culture -- and how it all finally ended. • During the early 1920s Minneapolis attorney Clinton Odell was trying to market a healing linement he had created called Burma-Vita. He gave the product the name since most of the ingredients came from Burma, and vita is the Latin word for life. • One day Clinton’s aunt burned herself badly. Desperate to sooth the pain, she decided to try spreading some of Clinton’s Burma-Vita liniment on the burn. It healed so well without scarring that Clinton was encouraged enough to drop law altogether and focus on producing and selling Burma-Vita full time.
• Clinton immediately went to work mixing large batches of the new product. His sons became the company salesmen, selling primarily to druggists store to store. One day his son Alan was on his way to make a sales call when a series of individual signs along the road advertising a service station caught his attention: “Gas, Oil / Restrooms / Coffee & Etc. / 1 Mile Ahead.” Why couldn’t shaving cream be marketed the same way? After some persuasion, Clinton finally agreed with the idea and the Burma-Shave sign campaign was born.

• Being careful not to offend anyone, the signs quickly became part of the popular culture. Clinton’s slogans also included moral messages and safety cautions:

LICKITY-SPLIT
BEAUTIFUL CAR
WASN’T IT? BURMA-SHAVE
• For years Clinton wrote most of the jingles himself. When he began running out of ideas, national contests brought in mail bags full of entries, sometimes 50,000 at a time. With over 7,000 sets of signs across the nation, BurmaShave thrived for a period of almost 40 years. • But it was not to last. In the early 1960s, as increasing numbers of travelers began driving faster cars and avoiding slow country roads for the speed and convenience of freeways, BurmaShave could no longer keep up. Decreasing sales and the increasing cost of keeping the signs posted and maintained for a diminishing audience spelled the end of an era.
• The first sets of signs were assembled with boards, nails and paint. They consisted primarily of marketing claims: “Shave the modern way / Fine for the skin / Druggists have it / Burma-Shave.” With their first set of • In 1963, the Odell family sold the business to a dozen signs placed along the most traveled Philip Morris, Inc., who decided to spend their roads around Minnesota, the company began ADVERTISING advertising money in other areas.PROOF Across the MON., SEPT. 9 getting their first repeat orders. country the DUE: signs slowly disappeared. NABCEP? The Consumer Protection Guide suggests that you use a company whose installers have passed the entry level exam from the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners. And we’re fortunate that in the Coachella Valley we have the first in the country to be accredited as an entire company - Renova Energy – one of only 11 in the nation and just three in California.
Q:
That sounds important. What else should I know?

Are you located within an HOA? A good local solar company will be familiar with the guidelines from your HOA and will have incorporated them into your design so there are no surprises or changes later. It will also ensure there are no objections from your HOA. Because they will also know their meeting schedule, a local company can advise you on a projected waiting time for this part of the process. Many HOAs also require that neighbors be notified so a good company will also handle this aspect for you and be familiar with any project deposits that must be paid.
Q:
Wow – sounds like it makes sense to deal with a local company. Anything else I should know?
A:
Up-to-date insurance is crucial to protect you when workers are at your home. Are they current and covered by Workman’s Comp? You could be vulnerable if not. Renova Energy is an award-winning local company founded a decade ago that designs and installs commercial and residential solar and advanced battery systems. Solar consultants will answer all your questions and help you decide if solar is right for you - not pressure you into buying a system.

8 Ways to Fight Memory Loss by Matilda Charles King Features Synd., Inc..
Memory loss does not have to be inevitable as we age. While 40 percent of seniors will experience some type of memory decline, fortunately it's something we can fight against and will win if we, literally, put our minds to it. The Mayo Clinic has provided a list of eight things we can do to sharpen our brain: 1. Take care of any chronic conditions you have, and follow your doctor's advice. 2. Stay mentally active. Read a portion of the newspaper that you normally ignore. Invest in a puzzle book. Volunteer in the community. (Offer to shelve books at the library, as it can help with both your mental and physical fitness). Learn to play a new musical instrument. Ask the senior center to invest in one of the memory improvement/brain fitness computer programs, and use it often. (Studys show that they really do work!) Dial the phone with your opposite hand. Learn new games or activities. Keep your brain from getting lazy!

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau
Let’s Just Reach Into the Mailbag I have just returned from a six-week trip to Australia and New Zealand. (I met more than a few Australian and New Zealand pensioners on this trip, and I’m thinking of a future column comparing their Social Security systems with ours.) But right now, I’ve got hundreds of backedup emails to answer. So, for today’s column, instead of concentrating on a single issue, I’m going to just reach into that electronic mailbag and answer whichever question I pull out.
Q:
My husband recently died. I am 60 years old and working full time, making about $70,000 per year. Should I file for Social Security now? Or should I wait until I retire, which will probably be in three years?
A:
First of all, you can’t file for Social Security now. Anyone who is under full retirement age (currently 66) and working full time isn’t eligible for any kind of Social Security. But once you retire, you will have some options. It sounds like you’ll be about 63 at the time. At that age, you could file for reduced widows benefits. You’d get about 86% of your husband’s normal retirement benefit. Then, at 66, you can switch to 100% of your own retirement rate. Or you could wait until 70 and switch to 132% of your full benefit. On the other hand, depending on the money amounts involved, it might be more advantageous for you to file for reduced retirement benefits when you retire and then switch to a 100% widows rate when you reach age 66. (There is no bonus for delaying widows benefits beyond full retirement age, so there would be no advantage to waiting after age 66 to file for widows benefits.) And just so other readers know, this option of starting one benefit at a reduced rate and later switching to another benefit at a higher rate is available only to widows and widowers.
Q:
I don’t understand this. Why should a woman who has been married to her husband for only 10 years get the same widows rate that I do? My husband and I were married for 40 years. I think the benefit should be prorated based on the number of years you were married.
A:
I’ve heard arguments similar to yours before. I’m not really sure why ideas like yours have never seriously been considered. I’ve got a hunch it would be kind of messy to calculate and administer such prorated benefits. I will share this bit of trivia from my Social Security past. When I started working for the Social Security Administration in the early 1970s, the law said a divorced woman had to be married for at least 20 years to get benefits from her ex-husband’s Social Security. Sometime in the 1980s, following pressure from lots of women in this country, Congress lowered the duration of marriage rule to 10 years. I remember watching Congressional hearings on the issue in which the women testifying essentially said: “Being married to that jerk for 10 years was
Q:
I am 66 and plan to wait until age 70 to file for my Social Security. My wife is 62 and eligible for a smaller Social Security check on her own account. If she takes a reduced retirement benefit now, will that reduce her future widows benefit on my account?
A:
No. Only two things affect your wife’s eventual widows benefits on your record. One is whether or not you took reduced benefits. If you did, that reduction carries over to her future widows rate. But you’re not doing that, so it’s not an issue. The other thing that affects your wife’s eventual widows benefit is her age at the time she files for such benefits. Assuming she is over her full retirement age when that happens, she will get 100% of whatever you were getting at the time of death. And that will include the 32% bonus that is going to be added to your retirement check for waiting until age 70 to file. And one more note about that 32% bonus: As I said, a widow shares in that bonus. But a wife does not. In other words, while you are alive, any spousal benefits she might be due on your record will be based on your age 66 benefit rate. But after you die, her widows rate will be based on your age 70 rate.
Q:
I am 42 years old and normally would never be interested in your column or other Social Security matters. But I’ve just learned that I may not have long to live. I have a wife and two young kids. What will happen to them from a Social Security perspective after I am gone?
of your full Social Security benefit rate. The benefit computation formula is way too complicated to explain in this short space. But essentially, they figure your benefit as though you had turned full retirement age at the time you die. And again, each child gets 75% of that every month. And they will get those benefits until they are 18 years old. The checks will come in your wife’s name on behalf of the kids. If your wife is working, she won’t get her own survivor benefit. But if she is not working, she might be due a small monthly amount on your record. The rules are too messy to explain, but there is a maximum amount that can be paid to the family of a deceased parent. The two survivor benefits paid to your kids won’t reach that maximum. But usually, adding a third beneficiary (in this case, your wife) would cross that maximum threshold. So, she wouldn’t get a full 75% benefit, but she might be due something. * * * If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has the answer. Contact him at thomas.margenau@comcast.net. PERFECT CHOICE!
ANSWER: Cotton-ball sensation is one way that many people describe the beginning of neuropathy, a general term for a variety of different conditions that affect the nerves of the body. In a person with cancer (like CML, chronic myelogenous leukemia, a cancer of the bone marrow) and a new symptom, it is always wise to consider whether it could be due to the cancer, the treatment for the cancer or from something else. In your case, usually CML is not associated with neuropathy. However, the medicine you are taking, dasatinib (Sprycel), has been associated with a severe kind of reversible neuropathy. I read the case reports of this condition carefully, and I doubt that is what is going on with you, as the symptoms you have are different from those reported. People with longstanding diabetes frequently develop a particular disease of the nerves, diabetic neuropathy. This almost always begins with sensation changes in the feet. I agree with your doctor that diabetes is the most likely cause. Seeing a podiatrist is absolutely a good idea. He or she can test you for this condition (usually a careful physical exam will make the diagnosis), in addition to looking carefully for any early signs or risk factors for injury or infection. You also should learn how to do a daily inspection of your feet and recognize the signs, so you can get to medical attention promptly should any damage to your feet occur. The podiatrist will make sure you have appropriate footwear. Many people with diabetes benefit from weight loss, but the important thing is to be sure your diabetes is under good control. This is achieved through good diet, regular exercise and medication, if needed, in addition to weight loss in people who are overweight. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Due to cancer, my prostate was removed about seven years ago. My PSA reading has increased since 2012 from 0.09 to 0.304. Should I be concerned? I am 78 years old and in relatively good health. -- B.D.

Item: A VA employee working in IT cooked up a scheme to make fraudulent transactions on a government purchase card and have the proceeds sent to his own bank account. He then rigged the system to make it look like the VA had received the goods. For this he could get 10 years in prison.

DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: What kinds of legal documents do I need to prepare to help my family after I’m gone? I would like to get my affairs in order but could use some help. --Almost 75 Dear Almost: All adults – especially seniors – should have at least four essential legal documents to protect yourself and your family. These documents will make sure your wishes regarding your estate are legal and clear and will help minimize any conflicts and confusion with your family and your health care providers if you become seriously ill or when you die. Here are the key documents you need, along with some tips to help you create them. Will: This document lets you spell out your wishes of how you’d like your property and assets distributed after you die, whether it’s to family, friends or a charity. It also allows you to designate an executor to ensure your wishes are carried out and allows you to name guardians if you have dependent children.

Egg Cup Does Double Duty Q:
This is a photo of an antique milk glass double egg cup. It stands about 4 inches tall, has a basket weave pattern and is in mint condition. On the inside of the small part are the words “Pat’d June 30th, 1874.” When I hold the cup to the light, I can see a red-orange flame quality to the glass. I have had it for over 50 years and would like to know more about its maker, age and value. Your opaque double egg cup is a good example of antique opal milk glass. The flame you see when the cup is held to the light is similar to fire opal stones. The smaller portion of the cup was used for placing a soft-boiled egg, and the larger part is for an egg that has been broken. The patented date, “June 30th, 1874” documents when Milk glass double egg cup was the pattern patented in 1874. was registered with the government. Atterbury Glass Co. made your cup. They were in business in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, from 1859 to 1902. Their basket weave pattern was available in several other pieces that include cream pitchers, candy dishes and sugar bowls. Opaque milk glass was also made in blue and green. Whimsical milk glass pieces were made in the late 1800s. Covered chickens, covered ducks and animal figures appeal to collectors of milk glass. Milk glass production reached a peak in the late 1800s and waned after World War I. Your circa-1874 double cup egg dish would probably be worth $25 to $50. *** This is a photo I took of the mark

Irish Belleek was made in Belleek, on banks of the Erne River in county Fermanagh, Ireland, from 1857 to the present. John Caldwell Bloomfield inherited an old castle and established his pottery. The region was rich in feldspar, flint, kaolin, clay, shale and peat. In the beginning, they produced earthenware. By the late 1860s, they were making Parian china. Your cream pitcher is an example of Belleek’s Lotus pattern and is marked with their third black mark that was used from 1926 to 1946. Similar Belleek pitchers are offered on the internet in the range of $15 to $30.
Belleek, Ireland, was located in County Fermanagh.

* On March 15, 1820, Maine is admitted into the Union as the 23rd state. Administered as a province of Massachusetts since 1647, the entrance of Maine as a free state was agreed to by Southern senators in exchange for the entrance of Missouri as a slave state. * On March 12, 1894, Coca-Cola is sold in glass bottles for the first time. It had previously been available only as a fountain drink. A bottle of Coke cost 5 cents, and it stayed that way until 1959. * On March 11, 1918, a U.S. Army soldier reports to the hospital at Fort Riley, Kansas, complaining of cold-like symptoms. By noon, over 100 of his fellow soldiers had reported similar symptoms, marking what are believed to be the first cases in the influenza pandemic of 1918. The Spanish flu would eventually kill 675,000 Americans and up to 50 million people worldwide. * On March 13, 1942, the Quartermaster Corps of the U.S. Army begins training dogs for the newly established War Dog Program, or “K-9 Corps.” * On March 9, 1959, the first Barbie doll goes on display at the American Toy Fair in New York City. Barbie was the first mass-produced toy doll in the United States with adult features. Ruth Handler, co-founder of Mattel, named the doll after her daughter, Barbara. * On March 14, 1967, the body of President John F. Kennedy is moved to a permanent spot at Arlington National Cemetery. The president had been assassinated on Nov. 22, 1963. The gravesite includes a natural gas line with a continuous electronic flashing spark that reignites the flame in case it is extinguished by rain or wind. * On March 10, 1988, disco sensation Andy Gibb dies at the age of 30. With his heart greatly weakened from years of cocaine abuse, Gibb succumbed to an inflammatory heart virus. (c) 2020 Hearst Communications, Inc.

Keeping the Club in Center
All Rights Reserved
Pitching the ball around the green with any wedge requires consistent control of the hands and arms through impact. One of the simplest images for the average golfer is trying to keep the butt end of the club pointing to the center of the body on the finish. “Keeping the club in center” gives the image of a unified action of body turn, and passive forearm and wrist action. Most pitches around the green can be hit with low to medium height finishes where one can check the alignment of the butt end of the club to the body. It should be aligned near the belt buckle or navel if everything works together. Avoid excessive positions where the grip end points too far outside the body on either side. If the body doesn’t turn thru to the target slightly, or the hands become too active, it’s nearly impossible to “keep the club in center”. This is a visual that can be rehearsed easily in preparation to hit those critical scrambling shots around the green.
