• The “second-generation” New Beetle was introduced in 1998, combining the old classic arched shape with a newer modern design. The engine moved from the rear to the front, with the luggage compartment in the back for the new models. A flower vase next to the steering wheel was added as a quirky accessory. “Motor Trend” magazine named the New Beetle “Import Car of the Year” for 1999, and sales in the U.S. were 80,000 that year.

• Production of the Beetle began in 1938, marketed officially as the “Volkswagen.” The “New York Times” was the first to refer to the vehicle as the

• The advertising slogan for the 1969 Beetle was “It’s ugly, but it gets you there.” That year’s Bug sold for $1,799.

Answers

• In 2012, the Beetle received another facelift when the design became sleeker without the trademark rounded top. Although we think of the Beetle as a German car, the new vehicles were actually manufactured in Puebla, Mexico.

• Although Porsche and his team finalized the design, the original design for the Volkswagen has since been credited to Bela Barenyi. Barenyi was a Hungarian man who earlier as an engineering student had submitted a chassis design for the Volkswagen in 1925 at age 18, many years before Porsche presented his initial design. Because Porsche claimed credit for the design while Barenyi’s version was not acknowledged, Barenyi sued Volkswagen in 1955 for copyright infringement. Barenyi won the dispute, and his contribution to the Volkswagen was finally legally acknowledged.

4. MOVIES: Where was the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy filmed?

• During the 1930s, only one in 50 Germans owned a car, and Nazi party leader Adolf Hitler conceived an idea for a simple, affordable vehicle that could be mass-produced for use by the common German citizen.

• After World War II when the American military took control of Germany, U.S. officials scrutinized the factory where Volkswagens were made. The Germans offered the factory to the U.S. to help pay down their obligation for war damages, but American officials scoffed at the ugly little Beetle car, saying it would never sell in America. Since the U.S. refused the offer, the Germans kept the factory and resumed their VW production.

• In 1937, he commissioned automotive designer Ferdinand Porsche to engineer a car that could carry two adults and three children, and could zip along at up to 62 mph (100km/h), while still being cheap enough for the average citizen to afford. The result was the Volkswagen, which in German means “people’s car.”

“Beetle” that same year.

• By 1955, Volkswagen of America had been formed to regulate sales and service in America. The millionth Beetle was built in 1955, and the car was offered in more than 150 countries worldwide. In 1962, the VW accounted for 60 percent of all imported car registrations in the U.S.

• The VW proudly holds the record as the longestproduced vehicle in automotive history. □ Emma Khatchaturian Mobile Notary Services BZ BW 6x disc. While drinking coffee has health benefits, using your Keurig machine daily without routine cleaning and maintenance can lead to awful con sequences. It’sessential to clean a Keurig because it can be a health hazard if not cleaned properly. Like any coffee maker (or espresso machine), Keurigs can grow mold if not properly drained, descaled and cleaned. Cleaning keeps mold and bacteria at bay but also removes the mineral buildup in the machine that affects the coffee taste and quality. A clean Keurig makes bettertasting coffee. The folks at Keurig say you should clean your machine once every three to six months. And that leaves a big question mark in my mind because three to six months is quite a range.

A better answer perhaps is to assess your use and the water source you use to brew coffee in your Keurig. If you make coffee several times a day and live with hard tap water, every three months is not often enough; you may need to descale once every month. Check routinely for hard water deposits and let that be your guide.

STEP NO. 3: Reassemble the machine, making sure you get everything back into its proper place.Next, it’s time to descale your Keurig. When you fill a Keurig reservoir with water with a high mineral content level, over time, this will result in a buildup of hardened calcium and min eral deposits, known as scale. That impacts the taste of your coffee but also prevents the ma chine from working properly. If it is not cleaned and descaled regularly, you should expect your Keurig to face a slow, painful death. But don’t worry, you can descale a Keurig using a few dif ferent methods.Itshould be noted that the manufacturer recommends only one method to descale your machine: its proprietary Keurig Descaling Solu tion. You can purchase this online or possibly at the store where you purchased your machine.

• The Talkers were able to translate three lines of English to code in 20 seconds, while the norm for an existing code-breaking machine was thirty minutes. They participated in every U.S. Marine operation in the Pacific theater between 1942 and 1945.

• In 1942, Johnston suggested the use of the Navajo language to military generals, devising a sample code for testing. When Defense Department cryptographers attempted for four days to break the code without success, it was approved for battle. The first 29 Navajo recruits reported for boot camp at Camp Pendleton in May 1942.

• In 2001, a group of surviving talkers received the Congressional Gold Medal from President George W. Bush. • In 1945, there were about 50,000 total Navajo tribe members. Of this number, about 540 served in the U.S. Marines. About 400 of those participated in the Code Talker program.

• In the midst of war, it’s of utmost importance to an army to transmit crucial information and plans to its forces as quickly and confidentially as possible. During World War II, the U.S. Marine Corps sought to create a code that was unbreakable to the enemy. The Navajo Code Talkers were the result.

• The Battle of Iwo Jima was a major World War II conflict that took place in 1945, from February 19 until March 26, with the purpose of capturing two strategic Japanese airfields on the island. During the five brutal weeks of the battle, six Navajo Code Talkers operated continuously, transmitting more than 800 coded messages, accurately and without error. Marine Major Howard Connor, the signal officer of the Code Talkers at Iwo Jima, said, “Were it not for the Navajos, the Marines would never have taken Iwo Jima.” The Japanese were utterly confused by the code and were never able to crack it. Had they managed to do so, the war would have had an entirely different outcome.

• The recruits developed the code by using Navajo words to apply to implements of war, such as names of different birds to denote various kinds of planes. “Dah-he-tih-hi,” the Navajo word for “hummingbird,” meant fighter plane. “Besh-lo,” meaning “iron fish” signified a submarine. From there, they devised a “code within a code,” first translating a Navajo word into English, then using only the first letter of the English equivalent. To spell the word “Navy,” by using just the first letter, they would apply the Navajo word “tsah” (needle), “wol-la-chee (ant), “ah-keh-di-glini,” (victory), and “tsah-ah-dzoh,” (yucca) to form the code word. About 450 military terms were created from the native language.

This lets you know whether they have undergone a background check and that the company is committed to following all the proper practices. If they knocked on your door to try to set the initial appointment, do they even have a permit for that? If they’re not following these basic laws, assuming that you can trust them to follow the correct and proper procedures for the design and installation of your solar system is not a good idea.

A: First, don’t get distracted by flashy ads or a fast-talking sales rep at your door. Focus instead on the true quality of the solar deal being offered. “About a year ago, my sister accepted a Shar-Pei/Labrador puppy from a guy whose wife gave him the “me or the dog” ultimatum. Zoey is a sweet dog, but she was randomly aggressive to ward my sister’s 5- and 7-year-old children. They did get her crate trained and house trained, and she will respond to certain commands briefly. Up to this point, she didn’t seem to be aggressive to ward strangers, adults or other animals -- only the children. The dog is probably 18 months old now.

The Best Hope Is the Right Match

Dog Talk with Uncle Matty

“My sister says children with emotional problems often get worse with therapy before they get better, and we were wondering whether the same is true of dogs. Could this just be a reaction to having been sent away for a while?

Think about that statement for a minute. Did any of us imagine, back in the summer of 2020, that the problems would still be with us in 2022? I for one was betting that once the vaccines started com ing out, Covid would surely be vanquished. Oh, how wrong I was.

on getting through this com ing winter: Increase the level of exercise you get. Hunt for interesting YouTube videos of exercise and yoga for seniors. Find ways to address anxiety. Double up on communication with others to avoid isolation. Find a new hobby. Buy a few new house plants. Splurge on home delivery of groceries now and then, instead of curbside pickup.

wants to save the dog. But what does that mean? Does it mean keeping the dog alive? Period. Or does it mean more? Helping the dog to better get along in the world? Finding the dog a world that better suits her? Matching the dog with a person better equipped to accommodate her needs?

Not everyone has the benefit of an extra room for a library. However, books can be placed in almost any room. Other than a designated li brary or office, my favorite place for a bookcase is a dining room. Besides creating an elegant back ground, a dining room table can double as a place to sit and read or do some research or homework. It is quite convenient to have books within reach. As such, everyone will use them. Books can go everywhere.Other locations that are suitable for storing books include entryways, hallways and even large powder rooms that can accommodate a bookcase or cupboard. Books can also be stored in a coffee table that has shelves. A stack of books that can also function as a side table. A table in an entry hall can be stacked with mountains of books for a casual chic look. A narrow shelf or shelves can be even placed on an ample stair landing for books so that you can grab one on your way to bed or out the door.

WhenEverywhereIwasastudentinthe

We’re winding up our third summer of the Covid pandemic here in the New England area and another winter is not far away.

The quick-fire answer to storing books is a book case, of course. But what kind of bookcase? A built-in one made of painted or stained wood is pretty standard in homes with a designated library or of fice. A moveable bookcase made of wood or met al is just another option and can be used in any room. Even a repurposed old china cabinet filled with your favorite tomes is a viable “library.”

For Zoey, the right match is her best hope. You could save a dog like this with the right environ ment. Zoey needs space and exercise. She needs to live in a house with a large yard. She requires a secure fence and a strong handler, someone who either is a professional dog trainer or behaviorist, or is able to hire one.

I’ll be a lawyer or writer That’s what I’ll be Well, part of that was right. Like most peo ple with a knack for writing, I have an addiction to books. If you are a book lover like me, the question that comes to mind when organizing books is how to display them. Books are im portant as a source of knowl edge, but to some, books are also cherished treasures, al most like friends, and deco rating with them is a serious matter. The late short story writer and poet Jorge Luis Borges said, “I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library.” Most rooms with stacks and stacks of books are sanctuaries for book lovers.

Finally, another often-over looked area for books is the bedroom. Again, Jorge Luis Borges also stated, “I cannot sleep unless I am surrounded by books.” The truth is that books lend a certain warmth to a room, and perhaps what Borges was referring to is the feel ing of comfort provided by books. An idea to take away from this quote is to incor porate books into a room by using a bookcase as a headboard, making your books easy to reach while you’re in bed. So now you know where you’ll find me most of the time -- in bed.

But in this situation, at the time this woman would file for her Social Security, the husband is not yet getting any benefits. So, this so-called “deemed filing rule” doesn’t apply in her case. She can file for her own benefits now, and later, once her hus band files, she can claim the extra spousal benefits on his record.

©

In fact, here is roughly how they will fig ure your wife’s spousal rate once you file at age 70. They will take her full retirement age benefit and subtract that from one-half of your full retirement age benefit. (Not your age 70 rate.) Any difference will be added to your wife’s reduced retirement

I frequently hear from readers who tell me about Social Security-related advice they got from a friend or relative, or from a Social Security Administration representative. They are writing to ask me if the information they received is cor rect. Sometimes it is. But many times, it’s not. Ac tually, let me clarify that. Social Security informa tion they get from a friend or neighbor or relative is frequently wrong. The advice they get from an SSA rep is usually right. But sadly, more than a few times, it’s also been wrong. (I’ve written past col umns about this issue, primarily blaming the lack of training that current SSA representatives get.)

People who are under their full retirement age and still working usually are not due any So cial Security benefits. Let’s look at your situation. The law says that for every $2 you earn over a pre scribed limit, $1 must be withheld from your Social Security checks. The 2022 limit is $19,560. So, your $40,000 in earnings are $20,440 over that limit. And half of that, or $10,220 must be withheld from any benefits due this year. Let’s say your benefit rate is $2,500 per month. If you filed now (in August), you’d be due five Social Security checks for 2022 totaling $12,500. But from that, the SSA would have to withhold $10,220, leaving you with only $2,280 to invest in real estate. I’ve got a barn in my backyard worth about that if you want to buy it. So, I suggest you wait until you retire or turn full retirement age, whichever comes first, to file for Social Security and start your real estate adventures.

If you have a Social Security question, Tom Mar genau has a book with all the answers. It’s called “Social Security: Simple and Smart.” You can find the book at www.creators.com/books, or look for it on Amazon or other book outlets. Before I end this discussion, I must clarify something. Some of you may remember that I’ve said many times that when people file for Social Se curity, they must file for any other benefits they are due at the same time. For example, if the guy who asked this question was already getting his own retirement benefits, then his wife must simultane ously file for her own benefits and whatever spou sal benefits she might be due.

Well, all I can tell you is this. No. 1: I worked for the Social Security Administration for 32 years -- in a variety of increasingly responsible jobs in a variety of locations around the country. No. 2: I never really thought of myself as just another gov ernment bureaucrat. I was always a student of the history of Social Security. I was keenly interested in Social Security laws and rules, but also in the rationale behind those laws and rules. No. 3: I’ve been writing this column for the past 25 years. No. 4: I’ve written a book about Social Security that from time to time shows up on Amazon’s “bestsell er” list.

Final Changes DUE:

A: If you were a widow, you could do that. But it sounds like your husband is very much alive. In that case, you have to wait until you are 62 years old before you’re eligible for any Social Security. And because your husband is already getting ben efits, the deemed filing rule mentioned above ap plies. So, you’d have to file for your own benefits first. Then IF you are due any extra spousal ben efits, you would file for them at the same time. But you notice that was a pretty big IF. At 62, you’d be due about 70% of your own benefit, or about 30% of his. And I’ll bet your own benefit is more than 30% of his.

Q: I’m 63 and I’m planning to wait until I’m 70 to file for my Social Security. My wife just turned 62. My wife didn’t work much outside the home, so her Social Secu rity benefit is much smaller than mine. I was planning to have her file for Social Security now and then switch to part of mine when I turn 70. But a Social Security rep told us over the phone that she can’t do that. He said if my wife files for her benefits now, she can’t switch to mine later on. Is that true?

Why Should You Believe Me?

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 60-yearold woman at the end of a five-year regimen of hormone therapy. My doctor has advised me to eventually stop the use of estrogen and progesterone by this summer, as she says women have an advanced risk of breast cancer at this age. Another friend a few years younger than me was told by her doctor that she could continue with hormone-replace ment therapy until she is 70.

VETERANS POST 

Rememberit.

Do you ever wonder if you possibly have PTSD? The Department of Veterans Affairs has created a very short PTSD screening webpage designed to see whether any symptoms you have could be related to post-traumatic stress disorder. The screening test consists of five short questions. At the end you’ll click to submit and get your score.

by Freddie Groves

Ad Proof:

Many women choose to continue taking their hormones when their symptoms are sig nificantly affecting their quality of life. I feel very strongly that it’s the physician’s job to advise so a woman can make the best decision for herself.

pharmacist if you are taking other medication. Many women ask about phytoestrogens (such as in soy protein or red clover) and other herbs with estrogenic activity (such as black cohosh). There is a theoretical risk, and although there are some studies suggesting they may be safe, many experts advise against these for women at high risk. That group would include women with a history of an estrogen-sensitive tumor.

The instructions suggest you take a screen shot or print the score page to take with you to a health-care provider. Probably not a bad idea, be cause it gives your provider a place to begin.

For more information about PTSD, go to sics.asp.www.ptsd.va.gov/understand/what/ptsd_ba Scroll down to the three information blocks and explore what they offer. “Understand ing PTSD and PTSD Treatment” (PDF) is a 16page guide to PTSD basics and is a good place to get a handle on

40% of women will have symp tomatic hot flashes until age 65, and continu ing estrogen is reasonable in women who are willing to accept the increase in risk. The risk is not just breast cancer. Women taking combined estrogens and progestins have a small increase in the risk of heart disease, stroke and pulmo nary embolism (blood clot to the lung), but a decreased risk of colon cancer and hip fracture. That all sounds scary, but the increase in risk of any of these is less than 0.5%. Overall, women on combined hormones were slightly LESS likely to die than those who were not.

My other question is, am I able to use other herbal compounds, specifically saw palmetto and/or St. John’s wort, without any risk of breast cancer? Or are these and other estrogen-mimicking compounds also a con tributor to breast cancer? -- R.N.

that this screening isn’t a true diagnosis. Only a real provider can diagnose PTSD, but this can give you a start in the right direction if you have concerns. Saw palmetto is not commonly used for menopausal symptoms (it’s used very frequently by men with prostate issues), and there is in consistent evidence on its contribution for breast cancer. Similarly, there is no consensus on the risk of St. John’s wort for breast cancer, and only limited evidence that it helps menopausal symp toms. St. John’s wort can interact with many medicines, so it’s wise to discuss its use with a

ANSWER: There is no one-size-fits-all answer to the first question about how long to continue hormone treatment for symptoms of menopause. I disagree with any absolute rule, such as stopping at five years or waiting until 70, because any woman may place a different value on her well-being, and a woman’s individual risk for breast cancer also needs to be considered.

You haven’t told me about any particu lar risk, but my answer would be very different for a woman with average risk compared with a woman with increased risk due to family history, for example.About

DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: What tips can you recommend for choosing a good active adult housing community? My husband and I are recently retired and we're planning to relocate to an area closer to our grandkids. We are interested in buying a house in a gated 55-plus neigh borhood, but how do we find out which community would be best suited for us? They are not all alike.

Some developments will let you stay in a model home for a few nights to get a feel of what it would be like to live there. While there, try the amenities and activities, and speak with as many residents as you can. They will reveal a lot more than you'll ever hear at the sales office.

Today’s active adult communities come in all shapes, sizes and price ranges, ranging from small city-based apartment complexes, to single-family homes, to sprawling resort-style locations on a gated golf course. Most are owned by their oc cupants, but a growing number are rentals. Typically, at least one occupant of each property must be at least 55.

It’s also important to understand that 55-plus active adult communities are not the same as retirement or independent living communities. Those are primarily designed for older seniors in their 70s and 80s. Active adult communities do not typically include meals or have a central dining area, but many of them will offer a central clubhouse and recreational amenities and activities.

Schedule a Visit. Once you’ve nar rowed your choices, call to make an appoint ment and visit them. Be sure to allow plenty of time at each community and, if possible, go back to your favorites more than once. Also be sure to ask questions while you are visiting, particularly about the community rules.

Will you like the surrounding area? Will the area around your prospective com munity serve your needs now and in the future? Ideally, this means having easy ac cess to good doctors and hospitals, and a local airport if you plan to travel much. You’ll also want to research how far you’ll be from essential services like grocery stores, banks and pharmacies, as well as churches, dining, shopping, and recreational attractions.

These fees, which typically run a few hundred dollars per month, go toward lawn care and possibly snow removal, as well as community areas like a clubhouse or pool. Some communities may require additional memberships or fees for golf, tennis, class es, or other activities.

What’s your budget? To help you choose the right active adult community you’ll first need to determine what you can afford. Consider the home’s purchase price, whether you’ll need a mortgage, how much the property taxes and insurance are, and how much the homeowners’ association (HOAs) or community fees are.

This line of compression is what creates maxi mum energy transfer and enables center contact more consistently than poorer impact alignments. In front of a mirror or window, rehearse slow swings that you can pause at impact. Notice the dynamic changes of the body, but pay particular attention to forming that compression line.

A good finish should have the left leg straight, the right thigh up close to the left leg, the right foot up on the toe, and the upper body arching back slightly. The trick is that the hips are now “tucked under” the upper body or the stomach is pushed forward. Many beginners, or players who don’t have good core strength, will finish with their hips pushed out behind their upper body. Learn to correct the finish by tucking the hips under or pushing your belt buckle forward in order to feel the correct position. Good leg work will assist in correct hip positioning as well.
