The rest of the fortune was to be held in trust for 75 years, until the year 2005 when Zink’s womanless library would be funded. Signs reading “No Women Admitted” were to be posted above the doors, and no books or art by women were to be allowed. Fortunately, Zink’s family successfully contested the will.

during the winter of 1573, the Zuider Zee Bay froze over and the Spanish ships that were anchored there found themselves solidly frozen in and trapped. The Netherlanders waited until the ice was thick enough, then rode out to the ships on horseback and captured them. This is the ony known instance in military history when a naval battle was won on horseback!

pez, Keith Urban returns to lend his expertise to the judging panel. Ryan Seacrest will continue to be our fearless host, and Harry Connick Jr. upgrades his season 12 mentor status to becoming a season 13 judge. Former judge Randy Jackson will return for a few episodes as an in-house mentor. ***

Q: I can’t wait to see Sting and Paul

Simon touring together this spring -- Sting has always been one of my favorite artists. Until then, do you know of anything that can tide me over? -- Nina T., Omaha, Neb.

A:

Well, Nina, I’m sure you already know that Sting’s most recent album, “The Last Ship,” was released in September 2013. But did you know that on Feb. 21 at 9 p.m. ET on PBS, you can catch Sting on Thirteen’s “Great Sting Performances”? The concert was filmed this past year on Sting’s birthday (Oct. 2) at a special fan-club performance during a 10-night run of benefit concerts where Sting performed songs from his new album. A friend’s husband was fortunate enough to attend this event, so I can tell you with certainty it’s a concert that should not be missed. ***

It seems like forever since “Vikings” ended its first season. When will it be back? -- Danny J., via email

A:

“Vikings” will return for a 10-episode second season on the History Channel in February, and you can count on plenty more drama, gore, sex and political intrigue. According to “Vikings” creator Michael Hirst: “The first episode of the new season will be absolutely gobsmacking. There are huge dangers at the personal level (for Ragnar). Certain things are resolved in conflict and certain things continue. The scale will be bigger. He’s gone into business now with a king. So, he can raid with bigger parties. He can be more ambitious. “There is going to be a new big, big character who is the King of Wessex. Wessex is a much larger kingdom than Northumbria, with a much more powerful and more clever king, a king who spent half of his young life at the court of Emperor Charlemagne. Ragnar is going to be up against a very formidable foe in the King of Wessex.” *** Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Everyday CHEAPSKATE

®

by Mary Hunt

Check Cashing Fees: Are They Legal? Dear Mary: A friend repaid a personal loan of $900 by giving me his personal check, drawn on Bank of America. I took it to a local branch. They charged me ®$6 to cash it. Is this fee legal? Would it have been less had the by Mary Hunt amount? check been for a smaller -- James, California

Everyday CHEAPSKATE

Dear James: It is both legal and fairly common for non-account holders to be charged a check-cashing fee. It’s a lot like using an ATM that belongs to a bank where you don’t have an account. Not all banks or credit unions have such a charge, however. Some apply it differently depending on whether the check is drawn on a business or personal account, while others have a fee if the amount of the check exceeds say $150. It’s random. I think we will see fees like these increase as banks look for more ways to enhance their profits margins. * * * Dear Mary: Thank you for making our world a better place with your common sense advice. I would like to explain why I think our daughter may inspire you. In 1976, our daughter Stephanie was born with cerebral palsy, Spina Bifida and a premature birth weight of 2 pounds, 4 ounces. She was tiny, but very bright and beautiful. Although Stephanie experiences lower paralysis and has never walked, she has never let her physical limitations disable her ability to live a productive and happy life. Her early life was dominated by multiple surgeries to improve balance and muscle tightness, yet her determination to achieve self-reliance and independence grew. She graduated from high school, went on to receive a BA degree from Oakland University and a Masters from both Michigan State University and the University of South Florida. Stephanie is currently a licensed mental health counselor in Florida and has worked for a faith-based homeless shelter in Tampa Bay for approximately the past eight years. She enjoys her work very much and works with wonderful people. She contributes to a 403(b) each year, has no debt and does have some savings. She is very grateful for her job, her friends and her co-workers. She gets up before 4:00 a.m. each day to ready herself for work and to give herself

enough time to catch the bus. She never complains, instead she praises God for the miracles she perceives daily. She inspires me, gives me hope and makes me proud to be her dad. Last year she underwent a risky lower back surgery to relieve muscle tightness and almost-constant pain. It was successful, but we worried about what would happen to her if she ever lost her limited mobility. Would you consider advising her on how to plan for her financial future? She is a very hard worker who I believe makes our world a brighter place. At 36, she is not thinking about life at 66, so receiving good advice now could prove to be priceless later. -- Gary, Michigan

Good advice, bad advice, utterly useless advice -- people love to pass it on.

Created by Tom Underwood

In working with people and their dogs, I hear all kinds of “surefire” strategies for shaping canine behavior -- tactics passed down from generation to generation, neighbor to neighbor, stranger to stranger. And there’s little chance any of it ever worked for any of the people who so generously share it.

Recently I was talking with a woman who has an 11-week-old puppy who is nipping. She had something in the neighborhood of four family members and 20-something friends and acquaintances weighing in on what to do to curb this “behavioral problem.”

“He’s trying to talk to you.”

Really? What’s he trying to say... “Please don’t listen to anything this person has to say”? (Mega Maze Solution on page 12)

“Tap your dog on the nose and say ‘bad bite.’”

“Bad bite”? I’m an English-speaking human being and I don’t even know what that means. You might as well say “tuna on rye,” because it’s all the same to your pup. What’s worse, “tapping” your dog on the nose -- whether with your hand or the much-vaunted rolled-up newspaper -- has a better chance of making your dog hand-shy, fearful or even aggressive than it does of curing him of any “problem behaviors.”

lifelong health Dr. David Lipschitz

Faith, Love and Charity Foster Health, Longevity For me and millions of other Americans, the Christmas season is among the best times of the year. Even for those of us who do not follow the Christian faith, it is hard not to get swept up in the joy and enthusiasm of this special season. Unfortunately, a “good” Christmas is often gauged by how much we spend and who gets the “best” presents. While the mercantile elements are obviously important, it is the spirit of the season, and the message of peace and love, which sustains us and actually helps to improve health. The link between faith and health is clearly documented in much research. So, no matter your religious belief, I urge you to take this Christmas season to consider the importance of spirituality in your life. Health is promoted not because of which religion you adhere to, whether or not you attend religious services, or read religious texts, but by practicing the principles of love, compassion and peace that are the cornerstones of every faith. Here are the core elements of faith that contribute to your health: First, seek peace, not only for the nation but also yourself. A stressful life leads to illness. Stress is a major contributor to heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, depression and obesity. Learning to be peaceful requires commitment and education. A qualified therapist can help teach easy techniques to control stress and improve the ability to cope with challenging situations. Second, be hopeful. Have more hope the Ad Proof: future will be better, our lives richer and our bodies healthier. We must also have faith in our friends, neighbors and community. Next, have more love. More than anything, love is the essence of spirituality and the key to longevity. ANSWER: You were right in starting out with your dentist. When no oral conditions are found that produce bad breath, then the most likely cause is mouth bacteria that produce odoriferous, sulfur compounds. Let me repeat what your dentists told you for the sake of others. Brush after every meal, and brush your tongue as far back as you can. You might want to get a tongue scraper for the backmost part of the tongue. That’s where the sulfur-producing bacteria live. Keep your mouth moist by drinking water or chewing sugar-free gum. What is Your Family’s History?

Our car is 6 years old and still in good shape. However, we now have five grandchildren and need more passenger space. One grandson is 18 and needs transportation for his job, and we plan to give our car to him. We also know that the accident rate among teenagers is alarmingly high. What advice should we offer before giving him this responsibility?

● On Jan. 5, 1920, the New York Yankees major-league baseball club announces its purchase of the heavy-hitting outfielder George Herman “Babe” Ruth from the Boston Red Sox for the sum of $125,000. The deal paid off as Ruth went on to smash his own home run record in 1920, hitting 54 homers. ● On Jan. 1, 1946, on the island of Corregidor, in Manila Bay, 20 Japanese soldiers approach a lone soldier -- literally waving a white flag. The soldiers had been living in an underground tunnel and only discovered that the war was over by reading it in the newspaper. ● On Jan. 3, 1967, Jack Ruby, the Dallas nightclub owner who killed the alleged assassin of President John F. Kennedy, dies of cancer in a Dallas hospital. The Texas Court of Appeals recently had overturned his death sentence for the murder of Lee Harvey Oswald and was scheduled to grant him a new trial. ● On Jan. 4, 1974, President Richard Nixon refuses to hand over tape recordings and documents that had been subpoenaed by the Senate Watergate Committee. Nixon would resign from office in disgrace eight months later. ● On Dec. 31, 1984, Bernhard Goetz, the white man dubbed the “subway vigilante” after he shot four young black men on a New York City subway train, turns himself in at a police station in Concord, N.H. Goetz claimed that the men, all of whom had criminal records, were trying to rob him and that he had acted in self-defense. 30 1 (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

I have an old stoneware jug. Round and 8 inches in diameter, it has a wooden handle and its original stopper. “The Adaptable Hot Water Bottle and Bed Warmer” is the phrase marked on the front. What can you tell me about my jug?

A:

Bed warmers have been used for hun dreds of years. Even with the advent of central heating, they have remained popular. Your bed warmer was made by the Old Fulham Pottery, which was founded in the late 1600s in England. A word of caution: never use very hot water without first gradually warming up the jug. Your bed warmer was made around 1900 and would probably sell for $150 to $200 in an antiques shop. *** Address your questions to Anne McCollam, P. O. Box ! E be 247, Notre Dame, IN 46556. Stetson China Company was founded in Chicago in 1919. In the beginning, it was a decorating and distributing firm, which purchased blanks from Mount Clemens Pottery located in Lincoln, Ill. By 1946, it purchased the Illinois China Company, also in Lincoln, so it would have a steady flow of blanks, not having to rely on an outside manufacturer. As soon as it bought the new company, it relocated to Lincoln and the name was changed to “Stetson China Company.” Their dinnerware was sold in department stores, and the company also made premium pieces for Procter & Gamble. The factory was family-operated. By 1966, as with so many other china firms, Stetson couldn’t compete with inexpensive imports so it closed. Your plate was made around 1946 and would probably be worth $5 to $10. * * *

Sports in an Instant Google, the company of the moment, has for quite some time offered users a product called “Instant,” which automatically returns possible search terms as soon as just one letter is typed into its celebrated search bar. It works as advertised. Depending on the speed of your Internet connection, Google itself will return potential search terms in a blisteringly fast 0.27 seconds (my personal time trial), but “Instant” happens almost simultaneously, So, playing around with Google Instant and Google Trends, I was able to gauge the top five or six sports topics of the day with relative assurance and ease. On this day, I learned that endurance matters. A few months back, when I initially tried this experiment, my results would kick out names like Lebron James, Kobe Bryant and Manti Te’o. Also, names like Jackie Robinson, Michael Jordan and even Brett Favre persisted. One time, I even recall seeing Babe Ruth’s name back up in lights. This week it was Jameis Winston, Kobe Bryant and Lebron James. And Jackie Robinson and Jordan. That take reminded me of popular phrases used in sports over the years: “I am not a role model,” and “Don’t hate the player ... hate the game.” Both have bothered me through the years, and I wasn’t really able to explain why until today, I guess. Robinson, Jordan, Bryant and even Charles Barkley (who coined the “role model” phrase) are indeed role models. Contrary to their notions, however, nowhere is their role more dissected and valued than on the courts and playing fields. A player starts his career in practice, in clinics and Little Leagues before moving on to the higher levels of play. If I was to teach a child how to rebound, I would choose Barkley’s style if it made sense to teach. I may choose to skip over the off-duty proclivities of all players mentioned, but during the tutorial I would point out their sportsmanlike qualities instead. Don’t hate the player? Hate the game? No way! You can hate the player ... the bad players (though “hate” is a strong term) but, like the Earth, the game was here far longer than the player was and it will continue to be here long after that player has gone. Sports, many agree, is an allegory for life. Google “meaning,” and “meaning of life” returns within milliseconds and in the top three picks for Google Instant. All things considered, I would say that “love of the game” has inspired many a person to create enduring legacies. In order to create an enduring legacy, you need to have the will to win, respect for the right role models, and yes, endurance. The longer you can endure, the more chances you will have to seize the particular moment that will propel you to everlasting fame. Nobody lives forever ... they live in the moment. Your moment is now, and remember ... it is gone in an instant. Make the best of it while you can. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in Kansas City. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.
