• Built in Bristol, England, the SS Great Western was an iron-strapped, oak-hulled, double sidewheel paddle steamer, the first steamship purposebuilt for crossing the Atlantic. At the time it was the largest passenger ship in the world. As it was about to sail for New York on March 31, 1838, a fire broke out in the engine room. Although damage was minimal, departure was delayed until April 8th. Fifty of her passengers cancelled their bookings, leaving only seven remaining to make the voyage. • Taking advantage of the delay and determined to beat the Great Western across the ocean, rival steamship Sirius embarked for New York on April 4th, four days ahead of the Great Western. Even with that head start, the Sirius only narrowly beat the Great Western by a single day, arriving on April 22nd. • The average speed of the Sirius was 8.03 knots but the Great Western made the trip at 8.66 knots, and her fuel consumption of coal was far less. The Great Western went on to make 45 ocean crossings Steamboats: Turn to page 3

river had met their end by striking such “snags.” Nearly 300 ships were lost this way. His contribution to both the shipping industry and the Louisana commonwealth was so profound that they named the city of Shreveport after him.
and John Stevens worked on the invention before him. Fulton adapted ideas of others and put steamboats in the public eye. He applied for exclusivity of steam traffic on the nation’s rivers. The state of New York granted him alone the right to operate steam powered boats within its boundaries. Fulton then asked for similar rights from other states. All turned him down except Louisiana. Controlling steam traffic in Louisiana meant that Fulton ultimately controlled much of the traffic on the Mississippi, because he could legally prevent all other steamships from reaching New Orleans and the Gulf of Mexico.

● It was Benjamin Franklin who made the following sage observation: “It takes many good deeds to build a good reputation, and only one bad one to lose it.” ● If you’re like 87 percent of American adults, you use the Internet. The only thing I find surprising about this statistic is that there are 13 percent of adults who don’t use it. ● In a recent survey, more Americans said they would have a hard time giving up the Internet than said they’d have a hard time giving up TV.

Creative Scams ScamBusters has exposed a wide variety of the latest scams. While it might be entertaining to think about the cons that scammers come up with, remember ... older Americans alone are bilked out of almost $3 billion a year. Fake Pregnancy Need to buy a positive pregnancy test to push a romance toward marriage? You can, if you hand over $25 or $30 for a fake positive test. Medical ID Theft An estimated 1.85 million people in one year became victims of medical identity theft. It’s become a huge business and will only expand. NAUTICAL CONNECTION • In 1851 Prince Albert hosted the Great London Exhibition to showcase Britain’s technological advances. In conjunction with the event, Queen Victoria invited all nations to participate in the annual 53-mile regatta around the Isle of Wight. Fifteen British vessels entered, plus one American boat. • The owner of the American boat, John Stevens, was the first commodore of the New York Yacht Club, and his boat was designed by engineer George Steers, who made his living designing sleek and fast boats. • Stevens’ boat easily won by a wide margin. Legend has it that when the Queen asked, “Who has won?” and was told who it was, she replied, “And who is second?” only to be told, “Your Majesty, there is no second.” It was still some time before the British second place winner even showed up. • The trophy, made of 134 ounces of silver, was called the ‘One Hundred Guinea Cup’ simply because that’s how much it cost to make it. It was ceremoniously awarded to Stevens and his crew. Stevens then donated the trophy to the New York Yacht Club in 1857 with the stipulation that it be awarded to the winner of international boat races held once every three years, in order to stimulate friendly competition between countries. • The competitive event and the trophy were both named after Stevens’ boat, and a new race was born -- the America’s Cup, named after the first boat to win it, the AmericA.

Q:
I finally was able to watch “Hatfields and McCoys,” and I absolutely loved it. When can I see Bill Paxton in something like this again? -- Paul T., Scranton, Pa.
A:
Well, I can’t tell you exactly when just yet, but I can tell you what. The History Channel has ordered “an eight-hour television event” called “Texas Rising,” with Bill leading an all-star cast featuring Brendan Fraser, Ray Liotta, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Olivier Martinez, Michael Rapaport and many more. The series will detail the Texas Revolution and the rise of the legendary Texas Rangers, and is set to premiere in 2015. ***
Q:
My book club finished reading “The Astronaut Wives Club,” and one of the ladies said she heard that it is being made into a TV show. Is that true? -- Danni W., via email
A:
ABC is indeed airing a 10-part series called “The Astronaut Wives Club,” based on the bestselling book by Lily Koppel, which tells the story of the women who were key players behind some of the biggest events in American history. The series premieres July 24 at 9/8c, and stars JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Odette Annable, Zoey Boyle and Azure Parsons. ***
Q: Sharon Lawrence is one of my favorite actresses. What has she been up to? -- Deanna W., via email
A:
The multitalented actress -- who has starred in shows like “NYPD Blue,” “Drop Dead Diva” and “Rizzoli and Isles,” to name a scant few -- can be seen in Lifetime’s “Starving in Suburbia,” a heartbreaking drama about the dark and dangerous world of eating disorders. The movie premieres Saturday, April 26, at 8 p.m. ET/PT, and you can read my full-length interview with Sharon as we discuss this important movie, as well as some other projects she has coming up, at www.celebrityextraonline.

3. Stop failing to return. It doesn’t fit right or the color is wrong, but who has time to trek back to the store? You do. Failing to return your shopping mistakes is way at the top of the biggest money wasters. Think of all those clothes you’ve worn once -- or not at all -- that could have been converted back into cash had you acted the moment you realized they’re just not right. If you still have receipts, try to get a refund for all the NWT’s (new with tags) you’re harboring. At least try for store credit. If that doesn’t work, there’s always re-gifting. In the future, always ask about the store’s refund policy. Save your receipts and do not fail to make the return.
Four Ways to Stop Wasting Money
The Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General (VAOIG) has, as usual, been busy investigating allegations of wrongdoing in the VA. I spend a lot of time talking about the problem behaviors -- and their fixes -- that sometimes surface in the shared lives of dogs and humans. I’m a dog trainer; it’s what I do. But while problems come and go -- especially when they’re properly addressed -- the good stuff that comes from shacking up with a dog can last as long as the relationship itself. Young to old, single to full house, without respect to race, gender or religion, dogs across the board simply make life better. But don’t take my word for it. Just follow the science. A study published in the August 2012 edition of Pediatrics found that infants who live “with dogs at home had fewer respiratory symptoms or infections and less frequent ear infections. The babies also needed fewer courses of antibiotics than other babies.” Turns out that dirty dog may be just what the doctor ordered. Dr. Mary Tobin, director of the allergy division of Rush University Medical Center, said, “It’s kind of exposing the immune system at an early age to all kinds of proteins the dogs would be exposed to in the environment, which somehow leads to a tolerance of the environment versus being more allergic to it.” Even as the commercial anti-bacterial crusade grows stronger, the truth is that there is such a thing as too much sanitization -- and dogs may be the natural antidote. But it isn’t just babies who benefit. In 1980, Dr. Erika Friedmann conducted a study of coronary patients that determined that “pet owners were more likely to be alive one year after discharge from a coronary care unit than non-owners.” And there are countless medical studies that link the companionship of animals -- particularly dogs -- to the improved health and longevity of humans: lower blood pressure and cholesterol, decreased levels of depression and anxiety, better physical fitness and more laughter. Yes, laughter. An experiment by Robin Maria Valeri on laughter in relation to humans and the animals in

DEAR DR. ROACH: I look down in the toilet and see that my urine is white and foamy. What is this, what causes it, and is there anything I can do? -- A.V.R.
M.D.
Vol. X Issue 17
SENIOR NEWS LINE by Matilda Charles © King Features Synd., Inc.
ANSWER: Foamy urine raises concern of excess protein. High amounts of protein in the urine could result from nephrotic syndrome, an indication of a serious kidney condition. Any doctor can do a urine test for protein; if it’s positive, your doctor will have you collect all the urine you make in 24 hours to see how much protein there is. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m wondering about the commercials regarding eating ice cream. The way they sound, it’s OK to eat it without fear of fat. I’m a male in his 70s, in fine health, and I am wondering if eating it is fine, but just once in a while. Thank you. -- A.A.
Hospital Patients Risk Infection
Hospital stays can make you sick. A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention discovered that one quarter of patients in hospitals get serious infections. SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau
My Mailbag I get dozens, sometimes hundreds, of questions emailed to me every day. As you might guess, many of them are the same questions I’ve been asked thousands of times in the past. And as I put those questions into a column, I worry about covering the same topic over and over again. I know I shouldn’t feel guilty about this, because I always here from readers who tell me something like this: “I know you wrote about [name a Social Security topic] in a past column, but to tell the truth, I didn’t pay enough attention to it at the time. Now I need that information. Could you please go over it again?” So today, I’m simply going to open my emails randomly and start answering as many as I can squeeze into the limited space of this column. * * *

A:
It won’t have any impact at all. Normally, if a woman remarries, she can only get benefits from the man she will be marrying. But the law says a widow who remarries after age 60 can keep getting those benefits even though she is married to another man. You are potentially due one half of your first (and now new) husband’s Social Security. Steamboats (from page page 3) only double-deckers, then a third and fourth deck were added. These towering boats could not hold their own against crosswinds and were often blown into shoals. Another danger was the fact that these boats were made entirely of wood and were extremely flammable. INTERESTING FACTS
• In 1853 the Rock Island Railroad built a drawbridge over the Mississippi River in order to let trains cross the river. When a steamboat called the Effie Afton smashed against the bridge and sunk with the loss of many lives, the owner hired a young lawyer who argued that the railroad was at fault and should be forced to remove the bridge. Although the steamboat company spent $20,000 on litigation, the case was lost. Soon railroad bridges were popping up along the length of the river. The defeated young lawyer, however, went on to greater things. His name was Abraham Lincoln. • In 1851 David Denny and John Low built a cabin on the Puget Sound and started a town. Shortly afterwards the first steamboat arrived, looking for lumber to carry to San Francisco. The pioneers had lots of lumber, but there was no easy place where the logs could be loaded onto the ship. The settlers decided to relocate their little town to a place where boats could more easily be loaded and unloaded. The local Indians helped them find a new townsite, and asked if the new town could be named for their chief. Today it’s the largest metropolitan area in the Pacific Northwest and is the 8th largest port in the U.S. -- and it’s still named Seattle.

Professional Golf Tips with Tina Mickelson
Cure for over-the-top move In a quest for more power and distance many players have a tendency to initiate their downswing with the dreaded over-the-top move. But many times, even though a player is aware they are guilty of this, it is still difficult to get themselves to stop this tendency. Here’s a drill I like to use: When I get to the top of my swing I picture my right elbow coming directly down to my right hip. I can’t do both at the same time; come over
the top AND bring my right elbow directly down to my right hip. So when I get to the top of my swing I think only of bringing that right elbow down to my right hip and although it’s an exaggerated move, it eliminates the over-the-top downswing. It is critical to make sure you have to Join. proper weight transfer as you do this and you Fun to Play! are not sliding through the ball. Keep in mind that if you do suffer from a consistent over-thetop move, this is a great drill to get you through your round of golf, but it would also be a good idea to see your local PGA or LPGA Professional and work it out for good.
