You will recall in past columns where I’ve told you about Nok-Out, the odor eliminator product. I’ve used it for years and have recommended it to you for stubborn odors that have the potential to make your life miserable or cost you a lot of money because of the harm they can do. I love the stuff because it is non-toxic, has no odor or fumes and is completely harmless to pets and children. And boy does it work! Like a miracle, it kills every kind of odor you can imagine. But it’s more than just a powerful deodorizer. Nok-Out is antiviral and antibacterial, too. In fact, Nok-Out is so effective against stubborn viruses like H1N1 and H1N2, Nok-Out has recently been confirmed as a hospital disinfectant. I hope that means that soon every hospital in America -make that the world -- is being doused with Nok-Out on a regular basis! Learn more at NokOut.com. And if you are interested in getting Nok-Out to disinfect your environment against the flu viruses and get rid of odors at the same time (so far, Nok-Out is only available online), be sure to use the coupon code DPL to get 10 percent off single items. Bundles are already discounted with a built-in 10 percent discount.

In spite of the name, SFF helps post-9/11 veterans from all the services. They cover family support, adaptive housing and transportation, special equipment, rehabilitative sports and so much more for injured and critically ill service veterans, as well as families of active-duty members. Unlike many veterans “help” organizations, this one is mostly made up of either retired military or spouses of military personnel. In fact, it was one of those spouses who started SFF nine years ago. The Semper Fi Fund (http://semperfifund.org) has garnered what so many veterans help groups haven’t: a four-star rating by Charity Navigator and an A-plus rating on CharityWatch. According to its 2013 Annual Report, only 6 percent of donations are spent on overhead. In 2013 alone, it helped 5,472 service members and their families and delivered 15,545 grants for a total of $14,559,793 in assistance. Here’s a partial list of what that included: 92 adaptive vehicles, 2,277 Team Semper Fi grants for rehabilitative athletics, 198 companion dogs, 160 camperships for the kids, 541 PTS/TBI devices, 16 grants for adaptive home purchase, 6,286 family-support assistance grants, 2,733 medical-support assistance grants and $1,151,777 from its America’s Fund, which supports families of injured and critically ill service members. Here’s where your checkbook comes in: SFF continues to receive applications for help on a daily basis. Usually, when I write of training, I’m referring to a dog. But there are times when only a coin flip can decide who -- dog or master -- is in greater need of education. This is one of those times. “We got our Doberman, Sasha, from a breeder when she was 8 weeks old. She’s now 4. “When she first came to live at our house, we had a male pug named Max and a female black Lab named Quincy, who stays outside in a kennel. Max and Sasha loved each other, but Sasha didn’t love Quincy. They got into a few fights when Quincy came inside on winter nights. Sasha always went after her neck, but Quincy was never hurt. “A few weeks later, Max died from unknown diabetes. We tried to bring Sasha around other dogs, but she wouldn’t accept them. “Then, when Sasha was a year old, we found kittens in a woodpile. She loved them! She thought they were her babies. So we kept a male cat we call scoop, disinfect and remove yo Patch, and those two We never had any problems, exweekly for But only $9.75 cept for one time when Patchpoop scratched Sasha. Sasha didn’t fight back. “We also have a parakeet that Sasha loves to stalk and chase around. “So far, Sasha has bitten six people; three of them had to go to the hospital for stitches. Two of the people she bit live in the house, me being one and my mom the other. She bit me to the extent that I had to get plastic surgery on my cheek. “She also has bitten my aunt and three friends who walked into my house without me accompanying them -- which is understandable but not tolerable. “A few weeks ago, we brought a puppy that we wanted to keep home to see Sasha. He is a Boxerblack Lab mix. Sasha loved him. It’s obvious that she always wanted to play with other dogs, but was just too scared. “We’ve had the puppy for about four weeks now. The second week, Sasha bit him on the nose

I just finished reading (or actually re-reading) Russell Baker’s memoir, “Growing Up.” For those of you who don’t know him, Russell Baker is a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer who worked for many years as a columnist for the New York Times. He and I have several things in common. No, this little column of mine has never won a Pulitzer Prize. And the closest I’ve ever come to writing for the New York Times is scribbling in the answers (well, at least some of them) each Sunday in their ubiquitous crossword puzzle. Instead, what Russell Baker and I have in common is a similar family history -- just one generation apart. Baker was born in 1925. I was born in 1949. He had two sisters. I had two brothers and one sister. His parents were poor. My parents were poor. His father died when Russell was just a young boy. My father died when I was just a young boy. His mother struggled to make ends meet, taking on any job to help pay the rent and put food on the table. Choosing Happiness! Q:

A good friend of mine said something to me recently that I can’t get off my mind. I had mentioned that it seems like people are not as friendly toward me as they once were. In fact, some even seem to be avoiding me. She said honestly that it’s because I’ve become so negative about ever ything the past few years that no one really wants me around. She said people think I am always feeling sorr y for myself and they don’t want to hear my complaints. This blindsided me and it comes as a real shock. I am feeling hurt and I don’t know what to do. Now that I know what they are thinking I suppose I should improve. I am 76. Is it too late for me to change my outlook?

need to rise above the feelings of hurt and rejection we have experienced that often manifest themselves in later years through anger. Bad experiences can become internalized and become part of our personality. Train yourself to reject negative thoughts and to not speak when you feel like complaining. It will take time, but eventually people will notice the difference in you. And the time for you to start that self awareness training is now! * * *

Q:

I’m a 63-year-old lifelong bachelor. I’ve had several long-term relationships but never married. Now I have found a new lady that I genuinely care about and vice-versa. This seems like the real thing and we are even talking about marriage. Given my histor y with relationships, could this be a mistake for me?

I have enclosed the mark that is on the back of a porcelain cake plate I have. The plate is decorated with three bunches of pastel roses against a white background. It is 11 inches in diameter and has small handles. Both the handles and the edges are trimmed in gold. It is in excellent condition. The plate was given to me by a friend who has passed away, and I would like to know more about its histor y.

I was given the set of dishes in this photo and would like to know more about them, as well as their value. There are eight each of dinner plates, salad plates, soup bowls, dessert bowls and saucers, but only seven cups. The set also includes ser ving platters, a cream pitcher, a sugar bowl with a turquoise lid and five water glasses. A few of the dishes have chips, but most look as though they were never used. The dishes have an off-white background and are trimmed with turquoise, elongated diamond shapes alternating with starbursts that circle the borders. Based on the decoration style, the set was made in the 1960s, I suspect. Marked on the back of most pieces are the words “Nest Stone -- Hand Decorated -- Made in America -Oven Proof -- Detergent Proof -- Underglazed.” Any information you can provide will be appreciated.

Main Street (from page page 3) nine motorcyclists who held a race. Now the rally attracts as many as 600,000 bikers from all over the country, and it’s really a big deal! • Our Canadian neighbors to the north have thier share of main streets as well. One of the most famous is the Main Street in Winnipeg, where it intersects with Portage Avenue. It is considered the heart of Winnipeg, the center of the country and thereby the heart of Canada. It is also said to be the coldest intersection in Canada! (eh?)

TEE UP

• “The Main” in Montreal is actually named Boulevard St-Laurent, also known as St. Lawrence Boulevard. It is considered the symbolic dividing line between the city’s English and French communities. Designated a National Historic Site in 2002, the street was made famous by the music of Leonard Cohen and books by Mordecai Richler. • Another Canadian Main Street was once listed as the longest road in the world. Yonge Street in Toronto runs from the Lake Ontario shore through Toronto north to become Highway 11 and continue through many country towns and wilderness to Lake Simcoe.

YOUR AD

HERE!

• Yonge Street was removed from Guinness list of records in 1998, possibly because of road changes near Barrie, Ontario. The distance for the road is 1,178 miles (1,896 km), which sure seems long enough to be distinctive! A brass plaque is embedded in the sidewalk on Yonge Street near Toronto’s waterfront across from Dundas Square, that marks distances to key cities of Ontario. The street was named by John Graves Simcoe, Ontario’s first governor, after Sir George Yonge, an expert on Roman roads.  CLIP AND SAVE
