● It was English poet Martin Farquhar Tupper who made the following sage observation: “Well-timed silence hath more eloquence than speech.” ● If you’re in the neighborhood of Bessemer, Alabama, you might want to stop in its Hall of History. Though the connection to local history isn’t clear, Hitler’s typewriter is on display to curious onlookers. ● You may be among those people who think good deeds and selfless acts are on the decline. If so, consider this story: In 2010, an employee at a recycling company came across 23 U.S. savings bonds while sorting through a bin of discarded papers. Instead of trying to cash the $22,000 worth of bonds himself, Mike Rodgers decided to track down the owner. It turned out that the woman who had bought the bonds, Martha Dobbins, had been dead for almost two decades. Rodgers didn’t give up, though; he began a search for Robert Roberts, who was also named on the bonds. Though the name is common and Rodgers hit many dead ends, he eventually located the correct Robert Roberts, the son of Martha Dobbins. Roberts hadn’t even been aware of the bonds’ existence. Rodgers, his good deed finally being done, refused a reward. ● The next time you look out the window and see banks of freshly fallen snow, remember that only about 8 percent of that fluffy whiteness is actually water; the remaining 92 percent is air.

Before pencils were invented ancient Romans used a writing instrument called a stylus to make legible marks on papyrus, an early form of paper. When graphite was discovered in 1564 in Borrowdale, England, it made darker marks possible and lead to what is today called a pencil. • The term “lead” pencil has been used throughout history but was actually never accurate. Lead has never been used as the marking material inside pencils. However, it was used in the exterior paint of pencils and caused possible health problems when pencils were put in the mouth or chewed. • In the beginning years of use, pencils were not covered with wood. People would use cloth or some other covering as they held the graphite to keep their fingers and hands from turning black as they wrote. • The birthplace of mass-produced pencils was in 1761 in Nuremberg, Germany, where one of the earliest known pencil makers was Kaspar Faber, a Nuremberg cabinetmaker. Faber used some ingenuity by glueing narrow sticks of graphite between small, smooth strips of wood, making the writing utensil easy to hold and use while avoiding dirty hands. His idea caught on immediately and he began producing them in large numbers in his shop.
• Nicholas Jacques Conté of France is credited with the invention of pencil “lead.” He mixed graphite with clay to create pencils with varying degrees of hardness. The rods of graphite and clay were fired in a kiln to prepare them for use. He received a patent for this process in 1795. • With the pencil’s origins in Germany and the United Kingdom, Americans imported pencils for years. Early settlers in North America depended on the imports until the supply was cut off during the Revolutionary War. Seeing the need for pencils, William Monroe, a cabinet-maker in Concord, Massachusetts, then stepped into the role as the first pencil maker in America. • James Musgrave was also involved in the early years of the pencil industry in America. The owner of a sawmill in Shelbyville, Tennessee, his main business was cutting used cedar fence posts into small strips of wood to ship to German pencil manufacturers. Musgrave bartered with farmers and ranchers to replace their fences with wire and pole fencing in return for their used posts and rails.

in the U.S. annually. If these were laid end to end, they would circle the earth nine times. • French mathematician Bernard Lassimonne applied for the first patent for his pencil sharpener invention in 1828, but it was not until 1847 that the pencil sharpener in its recognizable modern form was invented by fellow Frenchman Thierry des Estivaux

• When the United States entered World War I, Musgrave could no longer send his wood to Germany, so he decided to start his own business, the Musgrave Pencil Company. His success led to other pencil companies opening in the area. Before long, pencil manufacturing became an important part of the local industry. In the 1950s, Tennessee Governor Buford Ellington officially named Shelbyville, “Pencil City, USA.”

A:
Luke can be seen next starring in the Hallmark Movie Channel’s original movie “The Memory Book,” which premieres Saturday, July 26, at 9/8c. The story centers on photographer Chloe (played by Meghan Ory), who stumbles Luke Macfarlane upon an old photo album from the 1970s. She sets out to find the couple in the album to prove that true love exists. Along the way, she meets Gabe Sinclair (Luke), a mysterious but charming bartender who soon finds himself falling in love with her. I spoke with Luke about what the movie means to him: “I think it’s about investigating the past and learning from those who’ve come before us about how to live our lives. That sounds a little over the top, but I think the movie is about what the generation before us has to teach us. I’m a big history buff myself. I always look to the past, and I think

Years ago, cartoonist Gary Larson drew a The Far Side strip depicting husband, wife and their very large dog greeting another couple at their front door. The caption read: “Hey! Jack and Paula! You made it! … Now, quickly: Keep one hand across your throat and put the other one confidently down on Bruno’s head -- stupid dog’s going to get Agnes and me into a giant lawsuit one day.” What came first: the cartoon or the epidemic? This week I received a request to help a 2-year-old Shih Tzu named Verdell. “From the time Verdell turned 1 year old, he began to act very agitated whenever he heard anyone approach the front door. When a stranger entered the house, he would run away and hide. After a few months, he stopped hiding and instead barked, growled and turned aggressive toward anyone other than the family. This has escalated to biting anyone who comes into our house. “I hired a trainer when this problem began, but I became very frustrated because her solution was to constantly distract him from aggression with treats. This worked for a few minutes, but after eating 5 or 6 treats, he lost interest in them and went right back to full aggression mode. “I am now truly desperate. He has bitten over a dozen different people in our home, and although he is a small dog and won’t cause severe injuries, this behavior is absolutely unacceptable…” I spoke with this woman about her dog and asked all the obvious questions: Why do you keep inviting people to your home? And why, when you do, don’t you keep Verdell alone in a room away from your guests? He, like Larson’s dog, should not be greeting anyone at the door. What it boiled down to -- what it always boils down to -- is she didn’t want to feel like a failure. More than 12 victims in, she still couldn’t accept that Verdell is a biter. People are more willing to admit behavioral problems with their children than with their dogs. Another woman called this week to discuss

Sugar alcohols, such as sorbitol, xylitol and mannitol, raise blood sugars somewhat and often cause cramping, gas and diarrhea if taken in large quantities or by people sensitive to their effects. So, while all are generally safe, any can cause side effects. I don’t recommend any of them above the others, though I have seen reactions to sugar alcohols most frequently. *** DEAR DR. Enclosed is a photo of a pair of Asian umbrella holders that I inherited from my aunt. Actually, I’m not sure if they are umbrella holders or what they are. They are approximately 18.75 inches high and 8.5 inches at the widest part. Marked on the bottom of each are blue lines with cur ved lines. The scenes are against a cream-colored background and decorated with small white raised dots. The finish has a crazed appearance. Each is in ver y good condition. There are no cracks or chips. Any help you could give me will be greatly appreciated.

Your have a pair of Satsuma vases. They are too small to be umbrella holders. Satsuma-ware is Japanese glazed pottery. It was usually cream-colored and decorated with raised enamels and often had a crackled finish. Satsuma was first made in the Satsuma Province in Japan by Korean potters around 1600. There are four periods of design: Edo, Meiji, Taisho and Showa periods. Your vases were made during the Meiji period, which lasted from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. The raised dots are mo-

I have and still use a “Universal” kitchen meat grinder that belonged to my grandmother. The handle contains the words: “L.F. & C. New Britain -- Conn. -- U.S.A.” The mark includes several patent numbers from 1897 to 1900. There are four attachments that I also use to grind bread crumbs, nuts, meat and to shred potatoes. I would appreciate all you can tell me about my grinder and its value.
A: Landers, Frary and Clark made your meat grinder. Founded in 1853 by George Landers, “Universal” was added to the name in 1890. Over the years, they produced a variety of household appliances from meat grinders to toasters. Their grinders were a boon to American homemakers. They could chop, grind and slice both meats and vegetables. Universal grinders can be seen selling on the Internet for $85 and higher. * * *

You have an ironstone Flow Blue platter that was made by WH Grindley & Co. It was founded in Tunstall, Staffordshire, England, in 1880, and they made both ironstone and earthenware. The firing process often caused designs to run and appear blurry, thus the name, Flow Blue. Based on your description of the design, the platter is an example of Grindley’s “Lorne” pattern. The pattern is a transfer print. This mark was used from 1891 to 1914. Your platter would probably be worth $150 to $175.
