• Even with the success of Home Alone in 1990, Candy’s career took a bit of a dive, as he appeared in several unsuccessful films in the early part of the decade. He renewed his success with a dramatic role in Oliver Stone’s JFK, and in 1993’s Cool Runnings, in which he played the coach of the real-life first Jamaican bobsled team.

James Bond (from page one) • The fictional Bond’s parents were a Scots gentleman Andrew Bond, employed by a weapons company, and a Swiss woman named Monique Delacroix. When his parents died when the fictional James was age 11, he was sent to live with an aunt, then was enrolled at Eton, and was later recruited into the Royal Navy. (This portion of the storyline parallels Fleming’s life as he himself also attended Eton and was involved in naval intelligence). • The prolific Fleming wrote a Bond novel every year until his death in 1964, a total of 12. Since then, seven other authors have continued the series, including John Gardner who penned GoldenEye, which became the 17th Bond film. Fleming gave the name GoldenEye to his Jamaican vacation retreat which overlooked the Caribbean. It was named after a World War II military mission he had once carefully planned in the event the Nazis invaded Spain. After Fleming’s death, the estate was sold. • The 1958 novel Dr. No came to the big screen in 1962, the first of 23 Eon Productions “official” James Bond films. A casting contest was held to find the perfect James Bond, seeking a man age 28 to 35, about 6 feet tall, with dark hair, and a British accent. Sean Connery landed the role, edging out Cary Grant and Richard Burton. Dr. No was the only official Bond film seen by Ian Fleming before his death in 1964.

● It was American author and critic H.L. Mencken who made the following sage observation: “Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit upon his hands, hoist the black flag and begin slitting throats.” ● The condor is the largest flying land bird in the Western Hemisphere -- and one of the slowest in reproducing. The female lays only one egg every two years. ● Those who study such things claim that Napoleon Bonaparte was afraid of cats. ● Confectioner Milton Hershey suffered through founding two candy companies that ended in failure, then succeeded on his third attempt, and finally sold that company and used the proceeds to found the Hershey Company. After all his hard work, though, he seemed to be less interested in enjoying the fruits of his labors than in helping others. In 1909 he established the Hershey Industrial School for Orphaned Boys, and 10 years later he donated control of the company to a trust for the school. Today the institution is called the Milton Hershey School, and it continues to have a controlling interest in the candy company. ● Don’t consider yourself uneducated if you’ve never heard of anthropodermic bibliopegy; the practice of binding books with human skin is not (one can hope) common in modern times. ● Scotsman John Paul Jones is best known for his naval exploits for the nascent United States during the Revolutionary War, and for his infamous utterance, “We have not yet begun to fight!” Most people don’t realize, though, that he was born John Paul and only adopted the surname “Jones” on his first trip to America, where he came to flee charges in the deaths of two sailors under his command. *** Thought for the Day: “Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler.” -- Albert Einstein

James Bond
• The Bond girl in From Russia With Love was the 1960 Miss Universe runner-up, Italian Daniela Bianchi. She spoke no English, and began taking classes as soon as she was selected for the role, but in the end, producers opted to dub over her voice. •
• The Bond films have been filled with interesting gadgets and weaponry, along with some pretty fast cars. But these weren’t Ian Fleming’s only stories about fascinating automobiles. In 1964, Fleming penned the story Chitty Chitty Bang Bang for his young son Caspar. The story about a magical flying car was made into a musical film in 1968, starring Dick van Dyke and produced by Albert Broccoli. It was the only non-Bond film Broccoli produced after the Bond series began. • Beautiful women have always been a significant part of the Bond films and gave many actresses their start in the movie business. The very first Bond girl was Swiss-born Ursula Andress, who had the role of Honey Ryder in 1962’s Dr. No. Andress received a Golden Globe for the New Star of the Year for her work. Her career was set, as she appeared the following year with Elvis Presley in Fun in Acapulco, and went on to star in nearly 30 movies and several television appearances. • Several beauties received a career boost from their Bond girl role, including Jill St. John, Britt Eklund, Kim Basinger, Jane Seymour, Denise Richards, Barbara Bach, and Halle

MAKE YOUR OWN. Extra pillowcases can be pricey, so consider making your own: When you buy your next set of sheets, buy an additional flat queen-sized sheet match (individual sheets are readily available online), regardless of the matching set. Out of the queen flat sheet, you can make three pairs of matching pillowcases for a fraction of the cost of buying them ready made. Batteries, for example, might not raise a red flag. But batteries are bite-sized! Swallowing one whole may or may not be a major problem. But chewing a battery to the extent that its corrosive fluid leaks out could be a painful event that leads to serious health concerns for the dog. In this the era of technology, a household without batteries is unimaginable. So the best solution to this problem is prevention: the safe and secure storage of all batteries and any chewable objects they power.

But many species of mushrooms are harmful to dogs and can cause toxic shock and death. Unless you are a professional mycologist, don’t take any chances. Keep your dog away from all mushrooms. SENIOR NEWS LINE by Matilda Charles © King Features Synd., Inc.
Valuable Tips For Seniors who Live Alone Nearly 30 percent of seniors live alone. Home safety is very important to us, and even more important during the short, dark days of winter. Here are a few hints to stay safe:
-- Macadamia Nuts: If your dog consumes macadamia nuts, he might luck out with some minor gastrointestinal upset. But these nuts can also cause lethargy, muscle tremors and stiffness, and bladder stones. -- Avocado: At the center of an avocado sits a large pit that looks suspiciously similar to a ball. But even if your pooch avoids choking on the pit, avocados contain persin, which can be toxic to animals. Persin toxicity can damage the tissue of the heart and lungs and can cause pancreatitis.

As always, keep human medications safely stored in medicine cabinets. And find a safe, out-ofreach place for the storage of veterinary medication, as well. If you know or even suspect your dog has ingested or otherwise been exposed to anything on this list -- or anything you are not 100 percent sure is safe -- contact your veterinarian or the 24-hour Animal Poison Control Center hotline (888-4264435) immediately. Don’t wait. When combating toxicity, early detection and proper treatment yield the best outcome.

However, my friend seems to be able to put her finger almost instantly on anything. She knows where a certain photo is, or quickly finds the receipt for the item she wants to return, and so on. I have asked her to share her secrets and train me to do the same. She says ever yone is different and needs to find their own method that works for them. -- HELP
A:
All of us at one time or another wastes time looking for something we know we’ve placed somewhere. Your friend is right. To minimize your search time you will need to change your present habits. You need to establish a permanent place for bills, receipts, photos, letters and whatever, and put each one in that same place -- every time. Whether it’s a file cabinet, a desk drawer, empty jar or shoe box doesn’t matter. The important thing is that you automatically put it there each time without fail. Another easy way to stay organized is to jot down your daily to-do list on a small 3x5 index card. It’s small enough to carry in your pocket or purse. If you don’t get everything done, add your un-done items to the following day’s card. Once you’ve started your new habits, take your friend to lunch and tell her how you are improving. She may well suggest other ideas to help you PROOF findADVERTISING your lost time. -- Doug

I suggest simply observing the situation without being intrusive as a good way to anticipate the person’s needs and be ready to help. Step in to do little acts of kindness and assist them where you can. It only takes a few extra moments of your time to hand down an unreachable shelf item. You can step aside and let a senior move ahead of you in the checkout line, or lend a hand with a heavy door or a stubborn wheelchair. Similar opportunities for acts of kindness are around us every day. It can be bringing in your neighbor’s empty trash container, picking up their newspapers and putting them at their door on a rainy day, helping them carry their groceries, picking up their mail or shopping for them. The list goes on. These thoughtful acts make a difference in you as well. You will feel better about yourself when a stranger walking their dog approaches you and you smile and greet them and with a friendly “hello.” Everyone wins when we take these initiatives -- I guarantee it! -- Betty. * * *

The idea of Go Figure! is to arrive at the figures given at the bottom and right-hand columns of the diagram by following the arithmetic signs in the order they are given (that is, from left to right and top to bottom). Use only the numbers below the diagram to complete its blank squares and use each of the nine numbers only once.

We have several pieces of amber Baccarat Glass. Enclosed is a photo of five of them. The round plate is 7 inches in diameter, the oval dish is over 9 inches long, the smaller dish is 5 inches, the tumbler is almost 4 inches tall and the goblet is almost 5 inches tall. The oval dishes and the goblet are signed “Baccarat.” They are in mint condition. Can you tell us the value of our dishes?
This mark is on the back of a por celain pedestal cake plate that I inherited from my grandmother in 1973. The plate is decorated with pastel flowers and trimmed in gold. It stands about 5 inches tall and is in perfect condition. My granddaughter was recently married and I plan to pass it along to her. Any information you can give me about the maker, age and value will be greatly appreciated.

The mark you provided was used by Robert Hanke Porcelain Factory. They were located in Ledvice, Bohemia, now the Czech Republic, from 1882 to 1945. Rich deposits of white clay (Kaolin) were found in the nearby area Teplice (Teplitz) and spawned many porcelain factories. Porcelain is a mixture of fine grained kaolin, feldspar and quartz and fired at high temperatures. The name Teplice, Teplitz in German, is based on the Czech word for hot because there are natural hot springs in the area. The area was rich in resources and was on a heavily travelled route, giving rise to successful potteries. Robert Hanke Porcelain Factory produced high-quality porcelain dishes and decorative pieces. Your pedestal cake plate would probably be worth $75 to $125.
