• Chemist Leo Sternbach was responsible for calming the anxieties of millions of Americans with his invention of Valium in 1961, just one of his 241 drug patents. Valium decreases the rate of brain activity, tranquilizing those areas of the brain responsible for sensing fear. Although it was the biggest-selling drug in the nation from 1969 to 1980, it was found to be addictive, with some users dependent on it after only two weeks of use. Unfortunately, many users became dependent on Valium to cope with life’s everyday troubles, and it also numbed their ability to experience excitement and joy. The 1960s: Turn to page 3

• Meerkats have an elaborate “sentry” procedure that protects the entire mob and their domain. All the adults take a turn at guard duty in onehour shifts, constantly scouting for predators while the others forage for food throughout the day. While things are quiet, the sentry makes periodic peeping sounds to let the others know all is well. If there is danger, the meerkat has six different alarm calls that indicate the degree of urgency. There are more than 20 different calls with different meanings, including distress calls, feeding calls, and a call to forage. • Although they are a close-knit community and appear to be friendly, even sharing their burrows with the yellow mongoose and ground squirrels, these animals can be quite aggressive. They are vicious fighters, and have sometimes been known to kill the young members of their own mob in order to maintain or advance their position in the hierarchy.

Dark patches of fur around their eyes effectively reduce the glare of the desert sun, similar to the result achieved by baseball players who streak dark lines under their eyes with grease paint. In the mornings, they typically enjoy basking in the sun while grooming themselves.

• The diet of a meerkat is quite varied as they dine on lizards, birds, bugs, snakes, rodents, eggs, and fruit. Poisonous scorpions are a staple of the meerkat’s diet. It can catch a scorpion, pull off its deadly stinger in a second, and swallow it. With a unique immunity to the scorpion’s venom, the stinger is somewhat of a meerkat delicacy. • Meerkats are equipped with sharp claws that enable them to quickly dig holes and burrow underground. The 1960s: (from page one) • The first James Bond movie “Dr. No” was released in 1962, starring Sean Connery in the first of his seven appearances as the British secret agent. Bond creator Ian Fleming didn’t want Connery in the role, and after viewing the film declared it was, “Dreadful. Simply dreadful.” The film’s budget was $1,000,000, and when costs exceeded that by $100,000, the producers wanted to halt production, fearing they would never make their money back. However, “Dr. No” went on to gross $59.6 million worldwide.

• A popular 1994 movie tried to convince us that Forrest Gump was responsible for the invention of the “smiley face” when he wiped his mud-splattered face on a yellow T-shirt. In reality, the image was the creation of American graphic artist Harvey Ross Ball. Ball was hired in 1963 to create an illustration to raise morale among the employees of an insurance company that had undergone several arduous mergers and acquisitions. He designed the image in less than 10 minutes, receiving $45 for his labors. The State Mutual Life Assurance Company issued posters, buttons, and signs embellished with the smiley face, trying to get their workers to smile more.

* It was American science-fiction writer Hal Clement who made the following sage observation: “Speculation is perfectly all right, but if you stay there you’ve only founded a superstition. If you test it, you’ve started a science.” * Americans have more debt from student loans than credit cards and car loans combined. * For centuries, the month of June has been the most popular choice for weddings. One of the purported reasons was that some hundreds of years ago, this time was just after May’s annual bath, so the happy couple and the guests were about as clean as could be hoped. * It is the policy of the United States government to never insure federal buildings. The rationale? With such vast holdings, it’s best for the government to assume its own risks. * During this holiday season, you might want to add to your vocabulary. In the Eurasian nation of Georgia, there is a term to describe the feeling of being full but unable to stop eating due to the deliciousness of the meal: “Shemomedjamo” means, literally, “I accidentally ate the whole thing.” * You’ve probably heard that classical Greek philosopher Socrates died after drinking hemlock, carrying out the death sentence imposed on him for impiety and for corrupting the minds of the youth of Athens. You might not realize, though, that the poison is not derived from the hemlock tree, but from a flowering plant known as poison hemlock, a relative of the carrot. * Oysters and worms, although unable to see images, are able to sense dark and light. *** Thought for the Day: “The door of a bigoted mind opens outwards so that the only result of the pressure of facts upon it is to close it more snugly.” -- Ogden Nash (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

THE BERLIN WALL

As Berliners slept on the night of August 12, 1961, soldiers and construction workers labored in East Berlin, tearing up streets that led into West Berlin, erecting concrete posts, and stringing barbed wire, creating a barrier between the two parts of the city. Phone wires between East and West were cut, severing communications out of East Berlin. • At the end of World War II, Germany had been divided between the Allied Powers and the Soviet Union. The Allied powers fostered democracy and a capitalist society in West Germany, with freedom to travel. The result was a rapid post-war economic recovery. The Soviet Union, however, viewing East Germany as a “spoil of war,” quickly moved factory equipment and valuable assets to their own country. East Germany was then established as a communist/socialist society with very few freedoms for its unfortunate citizens. • As East Germany’s living conditions became more and more oppressive and the economy deteriorated, by the late 1950s, many had packed up and moved to West Berlin. By 1961, 2.5 million people had fled to the west, depleting the east’s labor force and population. • On the morning of August 13, East Berliners found themselves trapped. The 60,000 laborers who lived in the East but worked in the West could not get to work. Family and friends could no longer cross the border to meet or even call each other. East Berliners were no longer allowed to attend any type of artistic entertainment, such as the theater or concerts. • The Wall extended through the center of Berlin, then wrapped around West Berlin covering moreCapital than 100 miles, completely restricting Wright Group travel the two areas 1/3 pg. 4Cbetween 13x disc. Nov. 13, 2016 • Vol. 12 - No. 47

• Within a few short days, the original concrete post and barbed-wire fence was replaced with a permanent wall of concrete blocks, topped with barbed wire. In 1965, steel girders and a concrete wall separated the two halves of the country. • A five-year-long upgrade began in 1975, made up of 12-ft x 4-ft. concrete slabs, and a large, slippery pipe around the top to deter any climbing. On the other side a 300-ft. open area “No Man’s Land” was guarded by soldiers with rifles, dogs, electric fencing, watchtowers with giant spotlights, and minefields.

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

Why Trump Won’t Privatize Social Security In the past week or so, I’ve heard from dozens of fearful readers asking about Donald Trump’s plans to privatize Social Security. I’m going to suggest that people relax. President-elect Trump and his cohorts may have plans to privatize the Social Security system, but I highly doubt those plans will ever see the light of day. Actually, every Republican president since Ronald Reagan has vowed to privatize Social Security. And each one of those presidents rather quietly dropped the idea shortly after taking office. Why? Because the plan simply doesn’t work. Or to be more precise, it would be prohibitively expensive to switch from our current Social Security system to a privatized one. I will explain. Almost every privatization plan I’ve ever seen backed by a legislator or president is what is commonly known as a “carve-out plan.” It is called that because it gets its funding by carving out a chunk of the current Social Security system. For example, currently 6.2 percent of a worker’s salary is deducted for Social Security taxes. A carve-out plan might specify that 4.2 percent continue to be used to fund Social Security, while 2 percent would be turned back over to taxpayers for them to invest on their own. On paper, it may sound great. You get to keep a chunk of your payroll tax to do with what you want. And, of course, it is hoped you will invest that money, and not buy a new car or boat! (A better version of these plans mandates that the payroll tax portion you keep must be invested in one or more of several managed IRA-type accounts.) But the often unexplained downside to these plans is that huge reductions would be necessary in future Social Security benefits. It’s just simple math. If you are going to carve out about one-third of the Social Security payroll tax to fund a worker’s private IRA account, then, obviously, future Social Security benefits for that same worker are going to have to be cut by at least one-third. And here is the bigger problem with carveout plans. It’s not just future benefits for current workers that would have to be cut. But also benefits to current retirees would have to be radically reduced. Remember: Our Social Security program, like every major social insurance system in the world, is funded on a pay-as-you-go basis. This means the money deducted from today’s workers’ paychecks is used to fund benefits to current retirees. So if you cut the amount of money going into the system by a third, then the money coming out of the system must also be reduced by the same amount. In other words, you must eventually cut benefits to all current retirees by about 30 percent. Of course, that is politically (and morally) unacceptable. Many past carve-out privatization plans promised not to reduce benefits to current retirees. But the only way to accomplish that is to take money out of the general funds of the Treasury to make up the Social Security payroll tax deficit in order to pay all promised future Social Security benefits. And we are not talking millions, or even billions, of dollars. We are talking many trillions of dollars.

In other words, the transition costs of priva- individual worker’s investments, but rather the tizing Social Security are simply too high. As has been explained countless times in ture Social Security benefits, or the economic costs this column, those funds have always been investare too high to dramatically increase the deficit to ed in U.S. Treasury bonds. One way to “privatize” avoid future benefit reductions. And I am betting Social Security would be to diversify the system’s that Donald Trump and the privatization schemers portfolio -- to invest some or all of Social Security on his transition team will eventually realize those funds in the private markets. Such a practice could generate much steep costs and drop their plans -- at least their higher returns, albeit it with greater risk, than carve-out plans. But there is an alternative to the carve-out Treasury bond yields. But here is the downside privatization plan. It is usually referred to as an to such a scheme. Once again, we are not talking millions or billions of dollars, but rather many tril“add-on plan.” This type of plan would require workers to lions of federal dollars that would be flooding the contribute an extra amount to fund any private ac- markets. Bald Spot on Cheek? Get Thyroid Checked

Vol. XII Issue 49

DEAR DR. ROACH: For two to three months, I have been taking 17 grams of polyethylene glycol mixed in 8 ounces of water three times a week. Finally, I have found something that is effective in relieving my lifelong chronic constipation problem. In the past two months, however, I have lost approximately 10 pounds and at 5 feet, 4 1/2 inches tall, I now weigh 100 pounds. Could the weight loss be related to the use of the polyethylene glycol? -- P.D.M.

Thyroid Disorders Often Missed in Seniors Dear Savvy Senior: Can you write a column on the overlooked problem of thyroid disease? After struggling with chronic fatigue, joint pain and memory problems, I was finally diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Now, at age 70 I’m on thyroid medication and am doing great. Five years of feeling lousy. I only wish I’d have known. --Frustrated Patient

Those with the greatest risk of developing thyroid disorders are women who have a family history of the disease. Other factors that can trigger thyroid problems include: autoimmune diseases like Hashimoto’s or Graves disease; thyroid surgery; radiation treatments to the neck or upper chest; and certain medications including interferon alpha and interleukin-2 cancer medications, amiodarone heart medication and lithium for bipolar disorder. Get Tested If you have any of the aforementioned symptoms, or if you’ve had previous thyroid problems or notice a lump in the base of your neck, ask your doctor to check your thyroid levels. The TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) blood test is used to diagnose thyroid disorders. Thyroid disease is easily treated once you’ve been diagnosed. Standard treatment for hypothyroidism involves daily use of the synthetic thyroid hormone levothyroxine (Levothroid, Synthroid and others), which is an oral medication that restores adequate hormone levels.

ment for the chamber pot and racks that pulled out from one side to hold towels, and many had marble tops. With the arrival of indoor plumbing, the need for wash sets declined. Your wash set was made around 1900 and would probably be worth $150 to $275.

The enclosed mark is on the bottom of a set of six matching porcelain cups and saucers. Each piece is decorated with lavender flowers against a white background. The set is in perfect condition. It is all that is left of my great-grandmother’s dinner ware. My daughter would like to have them and wants to know more about the histor y and value.

Wash Set Was Made in Germany Q:

This is a photo of an ironstone wash set that belonged to my grandmother. It was given to her by a ver y wealthy family in Fort Wayne, Indiana, in the late 1890s or early 1900s. The set is in perfect condition and decorated with purple flowers, gold leaves and green bands. Included in the set are a large pitcher with a bowl, smaller pitcher, cup, covered soap dish and covered toothbrush dish. Marked on each piece are a crown and the words “Germany -- RW -- Rudolstad,” along with gold letters and numbers. What can you tell me about my wash set and its value?

Theodore Haviland has produced fine china since 1890.

A:

It all began when David Haviland, a New York porcelain importer, founded his first factory in Limoges, France. His son, Theodore, later started his own factory in Limoges in 1890. He introduced new innovative methods of decorating and firing and eventually became one of the leading manufacturers. The mark on your cups and saucers was used from 1895 to 1952. Each cup and saucer set might sell for $15 to $25. * * * Address your questions to Anne McCollam, P.O. Box 247, Notre Dame, IN 46556. Items of a general interest will be answered in this column. This ironstone wash set was made in Europe around 1900.

A:

The mark you provided was used by L. Straus and Son, an importing firm located in New York from 1882 to around 1930. It imported fine porcelain from Rudolstadt, Thuringia, Germany, and later from its subsidiaries in Bohemia and France. A plethora of ironstone and porcelain wash sets were made in Europe and the United States from the mid-1800s to the early 1900s. The sets usually also included a chamber pot and slop jar. The pieces were placed on a washstand in the bedrooms. Some washstands had a special compart-

Hope You’re Happy Now We all hope you’re happy now, Chicago. The World Series championship ... I mean, that’s just great for you, Chicago, except for one little thing: You ruined sports. Yes, we know how much you detested being the “loveable losers.” We know how badly you wanted to be like the rest of the obnoxious winners across this great land. We hope you got your money’s worth at the bars in Wrigleyville, hope it was everything you ever wished it could be, because you took away the one charming thing left in team sports. America is now completely devoid of a loveable loser, and there doesn’t appear to be any heir apparent. In essence, the Cubs success has left no successors to the (non) crown. Green Bay fans, New Orleans Saints fans ... they have been satiated. You could have made a case for the New York Rangers fans that had to endure the chants of “1940,” or the Boston Red Sox fans that had to gnash their teeth amid jeers of “1918” while being force fed a steady diet of Babe Ruth fables. The Royals won the World Series. Shoot, even the Maryland Terrapins won an NCAA basketball championship. The Cubs were the last team that everyone kind of pulled for deep, deep down (St. Louis being the notable exemption), and there is no team on the horizon that even remotely fits the bill to replace them. First of all, let’s dispel the myth that Chicago has been championship starved. This generation has seen the Second City finish first more often than any other city in America since 1990 when it comes to championships. When you add up all of the NBA, MLB, NHL and NFL championship wins from 1990 to today, Chicago leads the pack with 11 wins. Boston (9), New York (9) and Los Angeles (8) bow to you, and you’re not going to get any sympathy from anyone for being forced to watch Michael Jordan win six titles. You were never losers ... and with the exception of those stuck inside O’Hare for a layover, everyone likes Chicago, so knock it off. The question now is, whom do we collectively pull for? The Buffalo Bills would have been a good candidate, but let’s face it, you can’t root for the Ryan brothers. Notre Dame? Nah ... win or lose, they air every week on NBC. Rutgers? No ... they’re too stabby in New Brunswick. You can’t root for the Cleveland Indians but you can now make a case for the Browns -- post-Johnny Football. I’m thinking that maybe the St. Louis Blues could work, or maybe the Sacramento Kings, but they’re not sexy enough, really. Army, Navy and Air Force ... imagine if an armed forces squad could make it to the NCAA playoffs and knock off Alabama ... those are teams I think we all can get behind. Sure it sounds a bit crazy, but weirder things have happened ... just ask the newly minted “lifelong” Cubs fan in the next cubicle. But to paraphrase Chicago’s own Chance the Rapper, hope you’re happy, hope you’re real happy, Chicago ... that was such a selfish thing to do.
