• So what happens when you pour salt on a slug? In simple terms, salt over-stimulates the slug’s skin glands, causing them to involuntarily secret large amounts of their bodily fluids, often to lethal extents. Salt causes them to dehydrate by basically sweating to death. The active ingredient in most commercial slug poisons is metaldehyde, which has the same effect on slugs as salt. Metaldehyde will last through rain storms without dissolving.

• Ernest Ebbitson of England spent 30 years trying to breed a frog with transparent skin in order to avoid the destruction of so many frogs that are dissected each year in biology classes.
• Before the advent of firearms, natives of South America were well known for hunting with poisoned arrows. The toxin was obtained from the skin of a number of brightly colored frogs commonly known as dart frogs. The most notable species is the one named Phyllobates terribilis. According to one researcher, the poison manufactured by this frog makes “strychnine look like table salt.” When the frog is under stress, it secretes an oily white poison from glands in its skin. By tormenting a single frog, hunters could collect enough poison to dip about 50 arrows. The poison would remain deadly for about 6 months.

• Five minutes after the end of the dream, 50 percent of the content is forgotten, and after ten minutes about 90 percent is lost. • Our brain waves are more active when we are dreaming than when we are awake. Blood flow to the brain actually increases during dreaming. • We usually spend more than two hours each night dreaming, and we dream at least four to six times a night. • Babies in the womb dream. Babies born prematurely will spend ten percent more time dreaming than full-term babies. • People never snore while they’re dreaming. People never sleepwalk when they’re dreaming. • It is not uncommon for deaf people to use sign language in their sleep • Those born blind experience dreams involving things such as emotion, sound, and smell rather than sight. They also dream without experiencing rapid eye movement. • Chronic use of barbiturates or alcohol can lead to nightmares, especially after their use of the substances is recently discontinued. • The same sleeping pills that people take to regulate their sleep can cause profoundly

The continuous brain recordings that led to the discovery of REM sleep were not done until 1953, partly because the scientists involved were concerned about wasting paper. The paper needed to do an EEG of just one night's sleep was about a half a mile long. Today the information is digitized so no paper is needed.
• Making lead shot for shotguns was difficult and time-consuming in the 1800s. Lead was rolled into sheets and the sheets were chopped into bits, or it was drawn into wire and cut into pieces. The resulting shot was expensive and of poor quality. James Watt, inventor of the first practical steam engine, had a recurring dream. In the dream he seemed to be in a heavy rainstorm but instead of water drops, he was being showered with tiny lead pellets that rolled around on the floor by his feet. Intrigued by the dream, Watt experimented by dripping molten lead from the top of a church tower into a water-filled wash tub on the ground below. When he recovered the hardened droplets he was amazed to find that they were perfectly smooth and round pellets. To this day, lead shot is made by the process Watt dreamed up. • Elias Howe was trying to invent a sewing machine, but he was having a major problem trying to figure out where to locate the eye of the needle. The needle's eye is always located in the end furthest from the point, but all his

INSOMNIA • Half the population of the U.S. suffers from insomnia at some point. Insomnia is almost twice as common in women as it is in men. • When deprived of sleep, senses diminish, reactions slow, motor speed decreases, and the memory fails. The body temperature drops, and hallucinations and/or psychosis and paranoia may result if sleeplessness is continued. The body will be completely restored to normal after a period of sleep. • In sleep-deprived people, it is most difficult for them to stay awake between the hours of 3:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. • In a sleep lab, volunteers who got eight hours of sound sleep were tested for reaction time on a number of different tasks. The following night they were shorted on their sleep. When the tests were repeated, it was not surprising that their marks fell as their reaction time was slower. Following a normal eight-hour sleep, reaction times returned to normal. The following night, they were allowed to sleep more than eight hours. Researchers were surprised to see that their reaction time was slower after oversleeping just as it had when they under-slept. • In a sleep deprivation study, subjects were asked to sit in front of a computer screen and press a button each time the letter X appeared. At the beginning of the experiment, the subjects performed flawlessly. But after two nights without sleep, only one in four Xs were noted, and the button was often pressed for the wrong letters. This is due to microsleep sessions, in which the body falls asleep for mere seconds. • Sleep-deprived subjects can perform almost any test perfectly if it’s a brief test. However, severe impairment occurs if tests are sustained, repetitive tasks. • The accident rate in industry for night workers is almost twice the rate for those who work only in the day.

* On Dec. 5, 1839, Gen. George Armstrong Custer is born in Harrison County, Ohio. Although he is best known for his demise at the Battle of the Little Big Horn, Montana, in 1876, Custer built a reputation as a dashing and effective Union cavalry leader during the Civil War. * On Dec. 10, 1869, motivated by interest in free publicity, Wyoming territorial legislators pass a law granting women the right to vote. Area men hoped women would be more likely to settle in the rugged and isolated country if they could vote. * On Dec. 6, 1884, in Washington, D.C., workers place a 9-inch aluminum pyramid atop a tower of white marble, completing the construction of a monument to the city’s namesake, George Washington. * On Dec. 9, 1917, after Turkish troops withdrew after only a single day of fighting, officials of the Holy City of Jerusalem offer the keys to the city to British troops, who promised to protect all religious shrines. * On Dec. 11, 1946, the U.N. votes to establish the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) to help provide relief to children in countries devastated by World War II. The United States has never ratified the treaty. * On Dec. 7, 1989, boxer Sugar Ray Leonard triumphs over a lackluster Roberto Duran in a unanimous 12-round decision in Las Vegas. Leonard, an Olympic gold medalist, became a boxing sensation in the 1980s. * On Dec. 8, 1993, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is signed into law by President Bill Clinton. NAFTA, a trade pact between the United States, Canada and Mexico, eliminated all tariffs and trade restrictions. NAFTA was criticized by businessman Ross Perot, who argued that Americans would hear a “giant sucking sound” of U.S. companies fleeing to Mexico and taking jobs with them. His prediction proved correct.

4. What film actor wanted to Throw Momma from the Train in 1987?
Along with about 65 million other Americans, I am thankful for my dogs. They light up my home. They remind me of what a gift true companionship is. And they keep me in touch with a playfulness and curiosity that are too often absent from the lives of grownups. Owners of aggressive dogs give thanks, too. Their prayers of gratitude sound something like, “I’m thankful little Fluffy hasn’t landed me in jail” or “I’m grateful the mailman didn’t press charges” or “Thank you, Allstate, for not canceling my homeowners insurance after that incident involving Sergeant and Mrs. Cobb next door. I really am in good hands.” The week leading up to our nation’s 394th Thanksgiving celebration served up three such families, all of which should give thanks that their dogs have not done more damage. “We’ve had our 3-year-old Labrador-Irish Setter mix since he was a couple of months old. He has always been a good “alert” dog, with no evidence that he would bite. In the past six months, though, he has gone after the cable man and the AC guy in my yard. He also got ahold of the hand of a worker who reached over our fence to pet him. He is great with our kids (2 and 3 months), but he has become much more protective since I got pregnant with our oldest. Any insight on how to teach him not to attack people who enter our yard would be great. Oh, and he usually goes for the foot, but did go for a hand once.” “My 3-year-old Staffordshire terrier is very well behaved with people, but he hates other animals and will go after them. I’ve caught him a couple of times with small dogs in his mouth, and I was lucky to get him to release them. This is my first dog, so I’m new at this. I need help to get him to be social and have fun with other dogs. I really love him and want him to be a happy dog.” “Our 3-year-old Wheaten terrier has always been aggressive with other dogs, but the real problem is with strangers who enter (and leave) our home. Four people have been bitten in two years. Our dog is an insecure animal who spends a lot of time behind furniture and in the bathtub. He is the submissive dog in the household, but is entirely unpredictable with new people. We have three children. He has never turned on any of us. We love Casey's Corner: Turn to page 10

YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau
Please Stop Confusing SSI with Social Security I sometimes feel like I should spend the first half of the column explaining to readers that the Supplemental Security Income program is not Social Security. And then I should spend the second half of the column explaining that the Social Security program is not SSI. But I will bet my next pension check that, after writing that same column each week for a year, I will still get emails from readers who confuse the two government programs. Here are two examples from this week’s email inbox. First email: “Both my wife and I are getting SSI. I want to know this: If we move from California to Texas, will our SSI checks continue in the same amount?” Second email: “My mother is getting Social Security. She wants to move to Costa Rica where she thinks she will be able to live more cheaply. Can she get her Social Security checks in Costa Rica?” I’m going to come back later and answer these questions. And given the subject of today’s column, I will give you a hint to unlocking the clue to the answers. Turns out the husband and wife who want to move from California to Texas are getting Social Security, not SSI. And the woman whose mother wants to move to Costa Rica is getting SSI, not Social Security. But before I get to the answers, I’m going to explain the difference between Social Security and SSI -- maybe for the one-thousandth time in this column! Most people know what Social Security is. You work. You pay taxes. And then when you retire or become disabled, you start getting Social Security checks based on what you paid into the system. Or if you die, your widow, widower or minor children start getting monthly benefits -- again, based on what you paid into Social Security during your working years. And it is obvious to me that most people do not know what SSI is. Supplemental Security Income is a federal welfare program that pays a small monthly stipend to people who are 65 or older who are very poor; or to people who are under 65 but disabled who are very poor. How poor? Usually they have to have monthly income of less than about $730 per month to qualify for SSI payments. Many people confuse SSI with Social Security for a variety of reasons. One is the name. Supplemental Security Income just sounds like some kind of supplemental Social Security program. It is NOT. Another reason for the confusion is the fact that the Social Security Administration runs the SSI program for the federal government. But that is all they do. They manage the program. To repeat: SSI is not a Social Security benefit. And SSI payments are not paid for out of Social Security funds. The money for SSI comes out of the government’s general operating funds. In fact, Social Security’s trust funds are even reimbursed from the general funds for the costs of administering the SSI program. And getting back to that name business. So many people think that SSI stands for Social Security income. In other words, when millions of people say, “I’m getting SSI,” they think they are saying, “I’m getting Social Security.” But when I hear you say, “I’m getting SSI,” or when a Social Se-

Can Too Much Walking Wear Out Our Knees?
there is conflicting evidence, and that certainly is the case with aspirin. The difference of opinion takes place at the highest levels: the United States Food and Drug Administration recommends, in general, against using aspirin to prevent heart attack and stroke in people who have not already had a heart attack or stroke. However, the US Preventive Services Task Force recommends aspirin in general for men age 4579 and women age 55-79. The USPSTF makes no recommendation about men or women over age 79. Both groups agree that your physician should be helping you make the decision about whether to take aspirin.

Victorian Table Size Is Puzzling Q:
I recently purchased an antique marble-top table for $120. The wood is walnut and has the original finish. The cur ved legs have burl trim and casters. It stands 20 inches tall, 27 inches long and 21 inches wide. There is a small crack in the marble, but other than that it is in ver y good condition. What can you tell me about the style, vintage and value?
A:
Von Schierholz Porcelain Manufactory used the mark you provided. It was founded in Plaue, Thuringia, Germany, in 1817. “Handmalerei” is the German word for “hand-painted.” Objects marked “East Germany” were made between 1949 and 1990. In 1972, the factory was nationalized by the German Democratic Republic in East Germany. Today it is called VEB Porcellan Manufactur Plaue. Von Schierholz vintage porcelain is highly valued by collectors. It is known for its figurines, decorative pieces, steins and music-box bases. Much of its porcelain was influenced by Meissen porcelain. Similar cake plates made by Von Schierholz Porcelain Manufactory can be seen on the internet selling in the range of $25 to $50. * * * Address your questions to Anne McCollam, P.O. Box 247, Notre Dame, IN 46556. Items of a general interest will be answered in this column. Due to the volume of inquiries, she cannot answer individual letters. Victorian Renaissance Revival furniture was made from 1865 to 1880.
A:
You have a Victorian Renaissance Revival lamp table. The style flourished from around 1865 to 1880 and was inspired by 16th-century Renaissance furniture. Scrolled legs with beveled edges, casters, raised burl trim and marble tops characterize the Renaissance Revival. The height of your table is puzzling. Coffee tables were not made until the early 20th century. It is quite possible your table was originally around 29 inches tall and was cut down. Although the damage in the marble is small, it does diminish the value. Nonetheless, it is worth at least what you paid, and the right collector might pay around $150 to $200.
Q:
My grandmother was given a porcelain pedestal cake plate sometime after World War II. I think it was given as a wedding gift in 1949. It is about 6 inches tall and 12 inches in diameter, and it is decorated with

“A Spirit filled fellowship”
There is something undeniable about Tony Romo. He is all but universally beloved by anybody who has ever coached or played with him. As the franchise face for America’s Team, his mug gets plastered on both sporting and celebrity gossip magazines alike. But you know, he’s got a bad back and he has yet “to win the big one.” “Yet to win the big one” is perhaps the most damning thing you can say about an NFL quarterback, particularly when you’re a Dallas Cowboy and have to live up to legendary names like Don Meredith, Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman. And it’s something that Romo has heard a lot. People are always unsure about him. Is he a fearless playmaker, or is he a guy who makes bad decisions and refuses to stick to the script? Well, we may never know that answer, at least not in Dallas, because a new story is being written there as we speak by Rayne Dakota “Dak” Prescott. Prescott is accustomed to rewrites. He rewrote Mississippi State’s record book, setting 38 school records and setting the record for most passing yards in Orange Bowl history. Picked in the fourth round by the Cowboys in 2016, he broke the rookie record for most completions without an interception as a rookie, a record once held by a guy named Tom Brady ... a guy who didn’t break 38 records at Michigan. Prescott plays like the pro he is every week, he plays as if he’s been there before, and he plays like a leader who will take you places that you’ve never been before. When you can orchestrate not one, but two gamewinning full-field drives to come from behind at Pittsburgh, you are treading on untouched real estate. But that is, of course, exactly what Prescott did. The Cowboys as a franchise know how to deal with the press. While more than a few players aren’t smart enough to keep their names out of the police blotter, they know better than to tip their hand regarding the quarterback situation. “I’ll let those in charge of making that decision make that decision” is the common refrain. The team’s larger-than-life owner is a near-obsessive fan of Tony Romo. (He has gone on record saying that he would be heartbroken if he didn’t win Romo a championship. Huh? Shouldn’t that be the other way around?) Even he had to begrudgingly admit that the team had to go with “the hot hand.” The aforementioned hand is Prescott’s, and no doubt about it, it is scorching hot. Romo may be burning to get back into the game, but with each passing win -- and I do mean “passing” win -- the more it appears that we will be seeing Romo in another uniform come next fall. Time waits for no one, and in the NFL, you’re only as good as your backup’s first game.

• Author Robert Louis Stevenson wrote a story called “The Traveling Companion” and sent it to an editor. The editor rejected the story saying, “This is an ingenious piece of work but your plot is weak.” Stevenson was at a loss to figure out how to improve the tale. Then one night he reread the story before falling asleep. In a dream he had that night, he saw his story being acted out, with a different plot twist. When he awoke, he wrote down the details of the dream and then began re-working the storyline. The result was “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.”
