• The legs of an ostrich can be formidable weapons, capable of killing a human or even a lion with a powerful forward kick. Ostriches kick forward rather than backward. An ostrich at a zoo once bent a half-inch-thick bar of iron several inches off vertical with a single kick. • They often travel with other grazing animals, such as zebras or antelopes, because a herd of animals will kick up bugs, rodents, and lizards that the ostriches eat, while the ostriches provide the herd advance warning of approaching ADVERTISING PROOF predators.

• Ostriches have a strange habit of kidnapping other ostrich chicks and raising them as their own. Any time they have the opportunity, an ostrich will run another ostrich off from the nest, then hustle all the chicks over to its own nest. The brood may be stolen back by the original ostrich, or a third party may make off with the batch. This chick-napping goes on and on until a dominant ostrich is caring for a huge brood of chicks, with its own chicks mixed into the bunch. Scientists theorize they do this in order to provide protection for their own chicks: if a predator kills some chicks, their own offspring are more likely to survive if they are surrounded by other chicks. It’s the “safety in numbers” principle.

It seemed kind of short because it isn’t over yet, Gina. The show is on its winter hiatus, and will return to Hulu for seven more new episodes on Tuesday, Feb. 14, to round out the fifth season. Picking up where things left off after the midseason finale, Mindy (Mindy Kaling) is reeling from getting dumped by her boyfriend Ben (Bryan Greenberg) and finds herself with a magical chance to make things right. But it’s not just her love life that’s up in the air. Morgan (Ike Barinholtz), Jeremy (Ed Weeks) and the rest of the Shulman and Associates staff are back for more Mindy Kaling drama: Can Jody (Garret Dillahunt) finally get over his feelings for Mindy? Can Morgan and Colette (Fortune Feimster) survive as roommates given Colette’s turbulent dating life? Can Jeremy avoid having another heart attack amid all of the chaos? I can’t wait to find out the answers, and I’m sure you can’t either. *** Is it true that there is going to be another Vampire Lestat movie? I love those books! -- Kirby T., Wilmington, North Carolina

Tidbits of Coachella Valley
Tis the season in which people the world over willingly and with sound mind invite chaos into their lives. We dangle from ladders while stapling lights to our rooftops. We drag trees from the outside inside. We flit from party to party and engage in full-on battle at the stores. And through it all, there is the dog. While a dog doesn’t know Santa from the Pope, he’s no fool. He sniffs change in the air, excitement on the horizon, and he may or may not like it. That all depends on you. Here are a few things you can do to keep your dog safe and feeling secure during the holly, jolly madness of the holidays. Keep the food out of reach. This goes double for candy and chocolate, both of which can be extremely toxic -- even fatal -- for dogs. While turkey and gravy leftovers are unlikely to kill your dog, they aren’t good for him, either. Dogs have sensitive digestive systems, and sugary or fatty treats are likely to invoke a wave of upset -- on his stomach and your state of mind. Designate the tree, the lights and the decorations off-limits. You can make this easier to enforce by hanging things like lights, holly and mistletoe high overhead. (Holly, mistletoe and poinsettias are also toxic to dogs.) A small fence around the Christmas tree will keep the pooch out of its water and away from fragile, tasty-looking ornaments. Utilize the crate. For dogs that are cratetrained, this is the simplest solution to the problem of keeping the chaos of Christmas away from your dog. To properly crate-trained dogs, the crate represents a safe place of his own. Its floor is lined with a fleece bed or a soft blanket. A few of his favorite toys await inside. It’s quiet, comfortable and familiar -- qualities dogs love and need, and that are likely to be compromised come Christmastime. Remember the power of the leash. When used properly, the leash is perhaps the most powerful link between dog and owner. It gives the owner a degree of control he or she might not otherwise have, especially in crowded or overwhelming cirCasey's Corner: Turn to page 10

YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau
Mailbag Miscellany I’m drawing a blank. And I’m blaming it on my bad cold. My head is all stuffed up and I can’t think of anything to write about for today’s column. So I decided to open my inbox and turn the first four or five questions into a column. Here goes.
Q:
I appreciate the recent column you wrote about the confusion people have between Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income payments. Could you please do the same for Medicare and Medicaid? I work in a doctor’s office and I swear that three-fourths of the elderly patients I deal with mix them up.
A:
I know exactly what you mean. Every single week, I hear from dozens of folks who confuse these two government-run health insurance programs. In a nutshell, I can explain the major difference this way. Medicare is for anyone, rich or poor, who is 65 or older, or who is getting Social Security disability benefits. Medicaid is for poor people -- usually for folks who are on welfare or who are getting SSI benefits. Or to put that another way. Warren Buffet qualifies for Medicare benefits. But he will never be eligible for the Medicaid program. There are two major parts to Medicare, called A and B. Part A is hospital coverage that helps pay for inpatient hospital bills. It is paid for by payroll taxes deducted from worker’s paychecks. Because you pay for it while you are working, the coverage is free once you reach age 65, or once you’ve been getting Social Security disability benefits for 24 straight months. Part B of Medicare is called medical insurance. It provides coverage for doctor’s visits, lab tests, outpatient hospital care, etc. It is paid for by monthly premiums, usually deducted from your Social Security checks. Anyone 65 or older, or anyone who has been getting Social Security disability benefits for two years in a row, can apply for Part B Medicare coverage. (It is this Part B of Medicare that people usually mistakenly refer to as Medicaid. For example, many folks will tell me that they have “Medicare and Medicaid,” when what they really mean to say is that they have Parts A and B of Medicare.) There are also Parts C and D of Medicare. But they are not as common. Part C is sort of like an HMO version of Medicare. Part D provides prescription drug coverage. Medicaid helps pay for a broad range of medical services for poor people in this country. It is most frequently tied to our nation’s primary welfare program for the elderly and disabled population, the Supplemental Security Income program. So if you are getting SSI, you also will get Medicaid coverage. Even though Medicaid is tied to the federal SSI program, it is administered by state social service agencies, more commonly known as welfare offices.
Q:
I am getting Social Security disability benefits. When I die, will my wife qualify for my disability payments?
A:
Your wife wouldn’t qualify for your “disability payments,” per se. But what she could qualify for is monthly widow’s benefits, assuming she meets the eligibility criteria. In a nutshell, she would get widow’s benefits if she is 60 or older when you die.
Tidbits of Coachella Valley

Or if she is under 60 but has minor children in her care. So if there are no little kids at home, and if she isn’t 60 years old when you die, she won’t get any of your Social Security until she reaches that age.

We don’t know what causes it, but since the itchiness can be very uncomfortable, even severe in some cases, I think treatment, even though it may “mask” the underlying cause, is still helpful, and antihistamines are the

DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: My husband and I are thinking about making some modifications to our home so we can remain living there for as long as possible. Our advanced years are slowing us both down but we want to continue living in the comfort of our own home. Can you recommend some good resources that can help us with this aspect of aging? I think I've heard this referred to as "aging in place." -- Staying Put
To find an OT in your area, check with your physician, health insurance provider or local hospital, or seek recommendations from family and friends. Many health insurance providers, including Medicare, will pay for a home assessment by an OT if prescribed by your doctor. However, they will not cover the physical upgrades to the home. Another option is to contact a builder who’s a Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS). CAPS are home remodelers and design-build professionals that are knowledgeable about aging in place home modifications, and can suggest ways to modify or remodel your home that will fit your needs and budget. CAPS are generally paid by the hour or receive a flat fee per visit or project.

Dear Dorothy: Generally, once you’re 70½ years old, you need to start taking money out in what is called “required minimum distributions”, or RMDs. It’s not quite as simple as taking a little cash out and calling it good. If you don’t take enough, you’ll be severely penalized by the IRS.
