The dictionary definition of ‘irony’ says: “A situation WHEN IT COMES TO SERVICE WE’RE IN A that is strange or humorous, in which the outcome happens in a way that seems contrary to what would LEAGUE be normally expected.” Now that we have it defined, follow along as we look at a few choice examples of irony at work in the world around us -- and haveADVERTISING a PROOF chuckle or two while we're at it. In recognition of this month's Shark Week, Tidbits thought it appropriate to mention some quick facts about these formidible predators of the sea. • The word shark is thought to come from the German word ‘schurke’ meaning villain or scoundrel. • Shark teeth are replaceable. Their jaws are lined with several rows of teeth ready to move forward as the front teeth fall out. A shark can use up to 20,000 teeth in a lifetime. Some shark mouths have 3,000 teeth in use at once. • Fossil shark teeth found near Chesapeake Bay were five inches long. The prehistoric shark they came from would have been large enough for a person to stand upright between its jaws. • The largest shark ever caught in modern times had three-inch teeth and was 30 feet long. In contrast, the midwater shark of the Gulf of Mexico is only six inches long when mature.

• The rough skin of a shark is not covered with scales, but with dentricles, which are akin to tiny teeth. A shark can do much damage by simply brushing against a human. • Two-thirds of the brains of some shark species are devoted to odor detection. Sharks can detect one part of blood per ten billion parts of water, which means they could detect one drop of blood in a volume of water the size of an Olympic swimming pool.

ATTACK FACTS

King Features Weekly Service

• Sharks will eat anything. Some of the odd things that have been found in their stomachs include a roll of roofing paper, a telephone book, pots and pans, a full bottle of wine, a keg of nails, and a toilet bowl. • The chances of being attacked by a shark are about equal to being struck by lightning. About 20% of shark attack victims die. • Between 50 and 100 fatal shark attacks occur worldwide each year. In the U.S., the majority of attacks occur off Florida and California, because both sharks and people prefer to swim in warm waters. • Half of attacks occur within 200 feet of shore,

• Sharks seem to be attracted to bright, contrasting colors. Yellow is their favorite -- a color commonly used in flotation devices, rescue equipment, and scuba gear. Black is the color that sharks are most likely to ignore. • When sharks choose a victim, they tend to concentrate only on that person, totally ignoring other people who are trying to help. Feb. 2016thing • When under attack by aMon. shark, the15, worst to do is to freeze motionless. That’s what sharks expect. What they don’t expect -- and don’t like -- is prey that fights back. Swim directly at the shark, blow scuba bubbles, wave your arms and legs, and try to hit it on the snout, gills, or eyes. • Dolphins have been trained to protect divers from sharks. To stop the panic, they decreed that anyone spreading such false rumors would be put to death. When the Spartan army was actually sighted, the citizenry was too frightened to report it. By the time the Amyclae rulers realized the enemy was at their door, the city was overrun and taken without a fight.

* It was award-winning Canadian novelist, poet and literary critic Margaret Atwood who made the following sage observation: “War is what happens when language fails.” * Many people don’t realize that the parachute was invented before the airplane. The first person to use a parachute and survive was Louis-Sebastien Lenormand, who jumped off the tower of the Montpelier Observatory in 1783. * You’ve doubtless heard of Edgar Allan Poe’s poem “The Raven” -- or at least the famous line “Quoth the Raven, nevermore.” When the poem was published in 1845, it immediately became wildly popular, catapulting the previously obscure poet to national celebrity. Future president Abraham Lincoln liked it so much that he reportedly committed the lengthy verse to memory. Despite criticism from such literary lights as William Butler Yeats (who called the poem “insincere and vulgar ... its execution a rhythmical trick”) and Ralph Waldo Emerson (who said, “I see nothing in it”), the popularity of “The Raven” continued unabated, inspiring a plethora of parodies, including “The Gazelle,” “The Turkey” and “The Pole-Cat.” Popularity didn’t translate into financial success, however; Poe died in 1849, shortly after being found a penniless wanderer on the streets of Baltimore. His death has been blamed on consumption, alcohol poisoning or an opium overdose, but the true cause remains a mystery. * If you’re planning to take a cruise this summer, try to remember to use your right foot when you take your first step aboard; it’s considered bad luck to step aboard with your left foot. * You might be surprised to learn that in Russia, there are laws that prohibit the production, import or sale of lace panties. *** Thought for the Day: “You have not converted a man because you have silenced him.” -- John Morley (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

I have been watching “Person of Interest” since the beginning, and I read in your column that it won’t be back next year. I’m so bummed! Can you give me any scoop as to what to expect for the series finale? -- Steff S., Mims, Florida The sci-fi crime drama -- which stars Jim Caviezel and Michael Emerson --takes its final bow on Tuesday, June 21, on CBS. I was fortunate to get to speak with Michael about these last few episodes of this creative and intense series, and he revealed: “I think that the ending is really satisfying. And you do worry about that. You think: ‘Well, what can they do? Samaritan has taken over the world.’ We’re going to try to find a Michael Emerson way for The Machine to do battle with it, but as you can see from the episodes that have already aired, it’s not looking that good. So, what cards have we left to play? It seems like a losing battle now.” Michael enjoyed working with Jim Caviezel these past five years, telling me: “It’s been good, and we made a good odd couple, because in real life we are an odd couple. We lucked out. You can’t plan to have good chemistry among your actors, but we actually do. It was a good, odd chemistry.” As for his future plans, Michael is taking a well-deserved break. “The one thing I cannot contemplate is going right back onto a network series. I want to mix it up a little bit and knock around a little and recharge my battery and do some other kinds of things. Maybe do a play somewhere or get some guests spots. Play some odd, quirky character that I haven’t been able to do before. I would be happy to do a series that shot only 10 episodes a year. Then you would have seven or eight months to do other things, whatever you please. I’ll just see what comes my way.” *** A while back, you had mentioned a sequel to “Trainspotting.” Is that still hap-

Take this recent letter from a reader: “My Yorkie Randy urinates in my home, and I’m seriously at the point of giving him away. We love him dearly, but I can’t have my home ruined. He has a doggy door that he uses, but I keep finding puddles in the house. Help! You are my last resort.” Reads like the TV Guide log line for this week’s episode of “Desperate Housebreakers.” What the writer fails to mention is that Randy is 9 years old and never trained. That’s 3,285 days’ worth of Yorkie urine on the carpet -- which, in fact, is the impetus for the cry for help. She’s recarpeting the whole house and that’s not cheap. “I’m not going to spend all this money on new carpet just to have Randy ruin it.” Readers, take note: Most people will spend thousands on new carpeting and nothing on dog training. Why not put a little something into dog training and save thousands on carpeting? Housebreaking a dog should not break the bank. It requires a system and consistent adherence to that system. A reasonably intelligent person can housebreak a dog in three to seven days. Here’s how: 1) Establish and adhere to a feed-water-walk schedule. This conditions your pup’s body to eliminate waste at specific times of the day and night, as determined by you -- so stick to the schedule. 2) Use proper confinement. Baby gates and wire crates work well to keep your dog comfortable and confined. Free rein of the house is not allowed during the housebreaking phase. You can’t correct a mistake if it’s happening in another room. You must catch him in the act. 3) Neutralize odors. If you don’t catch your pup in the act, all you can do is clean it up. This is where that effective odor neutralizer comes in. Fact: The average dog can sniff out one part urine to one million parts water. He will return to that marked spot time and again if you don’t neutralize the scent. 4) Provide a proper diet. The right amount and kind of food for your dog will be determined by his age. But an age-appropriate diet is essential in keeping his digestion regular and predictable. This makes life easier for you in the training stage and

Is Knee Replacement Surgery the Only Option? DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a female in my 60s, and for the past couple of months I have been having some discomfort and swelling in my right knee. I am slightly overweight and have osteoarthritis. I have no pain when walking, but when leaning over, I get a tight pain in the front of the leg, below the knee. I saw my orthopedic doctor, who told me that the cartilage is worn away, and said that I would need a knee replacement. I was given a cortisone shot, which helped the pain. Would losing weight help me avoid surger y? I take an anti-inflammator y and rubbed Bengay on the knee, which helped. I went for another opinion from a second orthopedic surgeon, had more X-rays taken and was given the same diagnosis. Is there anything more I can do to avoid having a knee replacement soon? -- C.W. ANSWER: Osteoarthritis of the knee can cause permanent loss of the cartilage. Once the cartilage is gone, the knee replacement is by far the best option to reduce pain and improve function. However, there are some things you can do to delay the need for surgery, as well as to feel better. Losing weight is important, if you are carrying more than you should. Your body weight is multiplied when you are going up and down stairs, so losing even a few pounds means much less pressure inside the knee.

DEAR DR. ROACH: What do you know about Himalayan salt? Is it harmful to take ever y day? I am told that it can help lower blood pressure, because it has minerals and trace elements. -- M.S. ANSWER: Himalayan salt, though it has a pretty pink color and trace minerals, is still almost all table salt -- sodium chloride -- and salt raises blood pressure for most people. Keeping sodium intake down is likely to reduce risk of heart disease and stroke. Generally, people with a healthy diet get all the trace minerals they need. Most studies on multivitamin and mineral supplements have shown no benefit. ***

Some scientists believe that stem cells may become the basis for treating diseases such as Parkinson’s, heart disease, cancer and diabetes. VETERANS  POST  by Freddy Groves

Veteran Transitions Study Is Eye-Opener The RAND Corporation has spent a decade researching concerns for veterans, especially when it comes to transitioning to civilian life. It has recently released a study with 10 areas of investigation, and some of the answers are eyeopening. Here are a few of the questions: How widespread is veteran unemployment? The answer depends on the age of the veteran. Older unemployed veterans are on par with civilians, but the younger ones, aged 18-24, have more hurdles to jump, at least for a short period after leaving the service. RAND points out that the media lumps everyone into a group and doesn’t account for demographics. Are tax credits for hiring veterans useful and cost-effective? Bottom line: Yes. The credits cost $610 million but increased veterans’ income by $1 billion. It helps that the credit-eligibility rules have changed. It used to be limited to disabled veterans who had to leave the military because of service-related disabilities, but credits now can be used for any disabled veteran who was recently discharged or unemployed for more than six months. Do service members and veterans earn less than civilians? Short answer: No. Veterans earn more than civilians, as do active duty when the benefits are added in. Further, if the veteran worked in communications, intelligence or health care, he or she will earn more as a civilian than other veterans will. How effective are support services for veterans’ transitions? Bottom line: It depends on the service. But no matter what support service is used, some employers still can’t figure out how to translate military jobs into their civilian equivalent. More questions in the study include: How widespread and costly are mental-health problems among service members and veterans? And is suicide a crisis in the military? To read the whole report, “10 Frequently Asked Questions About Veterans’ Transitions,” go online to www.rand.org.

Freddie Groves regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply2@ gmail.com.

Deciding What to Do in Retirement DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: I just turned 62 and although I am financially prepared for retirement, I am not certain about how to spend my time after leaving work. Can you recommend some resources or tools that can help me with this once I'm no longer part of the work force? -- Feeling Lost Dear Lost: This is a great question! Many people, when asked what they want to do when they retire, will say they want a mix of travel, play and meaningful work. Specifics, however, tend to be few and far between. But planning how to fill your time in retirement is just as important as the financial planning aspect. Here are some resources that can help. Online Tools A good starting point to figuring out what you want to do in retirement is at LifeReimagined.aarp.org. This is an AARP website (you don’t have to be a member to use it) that can help you rediscover what truly matters to you and focus on what you really want to do. It offers a variety of online exercises and programs that will hopefully spark some ideas and give you inspiration. Encore.org is another good resource that helps people who are seeking work that matters in the second half of life. Click on “Resources” on the menu bar and download their free Encore Guide, and consider purchasing a copy of their “Encore Career Handbook” (available at Amazon.com or BN.com for $10.50) by Marci Alboher, which is excellent. Also check out the free E-book called “The Age for Change,” which can help answer the question: “What now?” You can download this at ComingOfAge.org. And, if you’ve never taken a personality test before, this too can be a good tool to help you figure out what type of activities or work you’d like to do. A good option for this is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator assessment, which you can take online at MBTIcomplete.com for a $50 fee. Personalized Guidance If you want personalized help, you can also get one-on-one guidance from a retirement or life planning coach. Some resources that can help you here include LifePlanningForYou.com, which has a free exercise called EVOKE to help

Since barcodes were first used in 1974, your bank was made circa the mid-1970s and would probably be worth $15 to $25 in an antique/collectibles shop. * * * This mark is on a cut glass relish dish that belonged to my mother-in-law. It is stamped into the glass and hard to find. My mother-in-law gave it to me just after my husband and I were married in the 60s. She told me it was a wedding gift to her parents in the early 1900s. It measures about 8 inches long by 2 inches wide. It is in mint condition. Could you give me any information on my dish?

Bank Is a Sweet Collectible Q:

This is a photo of a Tootsie Roll bank I own. It is shaped and decorated like a Tootsie Roll candy and made of cardboard. Tin lids cover both ends, and one end has a coin slot. It is about 11 inches tall and 2.5 inches in diameter. Marked on the side are the words “Tootsie Roll Industries, Inc., Chicago, Ill. U.S.A.” There is also a barcode. I don’t remember where I got it or how long I’ve had it. The candy is gone, and now I empty change from my pockets into the bank. Is this a collectible? Tootsie Roll bank is a How old is it? collectible. Does it have any value?

Imperial Glass Company was founded in 1901.

A:

Your relish dish is an example of Early American Pattern Glass, not cut glass. It was made by the Imperial Glass Company located in Bellaire, Ohio, from 1901 to 1984. Its Nucut line was introduced in 1911 and designed to look like cut glass. Your relish dish was made around 1915 and would probably be worth $20 to $25. * * * Address your questions to Anne McCollam, P.O. Box 247, Notre Dame, IN 46556. The Tootsie Roll was created by candymaker Leo Hirschfield. He was born in Austria and immigrated to the United States around the turn of the 20th century. According to one source, Hirschfield opened a candy shop in Brooklyn, New York in 1896. The Tootsie Roll was named after his daughter Clara’s nickname. It was an individually hand-wrapped chocolaty taffy penny candy. Hirschfield eventually merged with the candy manufacturer Stern & Staalberg and went on to become vice president of the company. Tootsie Rolls were trademarked in 1908. Some believe that each daily batch of Tootsies included some of the previous day’s batch.

The year is 1996, and the place is Atlanta’s Centennial Olympic Park, the “commons area” for that year’s games. Located just outside the Athletes Village at Georgia Tech and the dorms at Georgia State, and forced into a small, once-barren urban parcel between the Georgia Dome and CNN headquarters, Olympic Park was a place to grab a beer at the spacious AnheuserBusch tent, listen to a slate of live bands and queue up for a taxi ride home or shuttle to your car. This was where I spent much of my time, working for a large tech company inside the Athletes Village. It was a magical Olympics: Ali lit the torch. Kerri Strug landed a vault on a broken leg. The Dream Team was regulating. And on July 27, after a shift, I decided to celebrate at the Olympic Park and listen to a few bands. At that point, I ran into a girl from days gone by, and consumed with nostalgia, we decided to leave the park to visit with one another. After all, the next band was “Jack Mack and the Heart Attack,” and who the heck were they? I had just seen Run DMC play the Olympic Athletes Laundromat and spent the afternoon chilling with Ziggy Marley underneath a tree ... I was good. I also was lucky. Twenty minutes later, a bomb went off in the park, killing two people and injuring more than 100. Had we stayed, we would have been within 50 yards of the blast, and almost certainly taken a nail or two from the insidious bomb. I went back to work the next day and joined the chorus of volunteers and amateurs who wanted to see the games go on. That was then; this is now.

It may come as a surprise to you to learn that the mosquito is the most deadly animal on the planet. Each year, the little female of the species bites, drinks from and in so doing infects, millions of people and animals around the world, killing more than even we humans do. This year’s Olympics are to be held in Brazil. They are not ready, nor are they prepared to deal with the ramifications of the Zika virus, a virus we are just beginning to understand, a virus that deforms babies and can be transmitted sexually.

Like all great stories, here’s one that starts with a girl and ends with a heart attack. And, like many misapplied missives, let’s try and apply it to the upcoming Olympic Games at Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

That last part has me the most worried: Athletes are proud of their bodies. They actually made the hookup app Tinder a household name due to its handiness in the last Athletes Village. The World Health Organization is calling for a delay. Rio is in disarray. We should heed its advice. This is how outbreaks occur, and for what? We can still play the Games, but we can’t be stupid. Zika is for real, and figuring out how to handle this threat is as serious as any Jack Mack and the Heart Attack. *** Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey.
