Gambling and Losing the Social Security Game

I have written many columns cautioning people to not play around too much with their Social Security benefits by trying to squeeze every last nickel out of their nest egg.

And I know where the compulsion to do this comes from. Senior citizens are barraged with messages in the mail, in media and online, telling them that they are missing out on thousands of dollars in benefits if they don’t employ some kind of “maximizing” strategy. And then they are encouraged to attend seminars or buy books that supposedly will tell them the secrets to this hidden treasure trove of benefits.

Essentially, the “secret” message comes down to this: Wait as long as possible to file for your benefits. If you know you are going to live into your late 80s and beyond, that might be good advice. But of course, no one really knows how long he or she is going to live. Today’s questions come from people, or from spouses of people, who gambled on their longevity and, sadly, lost that bet.

There is an upside to your husband delaying starting his Social Security benefits. Because he did that, you will get higher widow’s benefits. Assuming you are 66 or older and are not getting higher benefits on your own record, you will get his full benefit, including the 32 percent in delayed retirement credits he got for waiting until age 70.

Q:

I just turned 68 years old. I was planning to wait until 70 to apply for my Social Security. However, I was recently diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma. I probably have less than six months to live. I realize now I made a bad decision by not filing for my Social Security earlier. But what I want to know now is what can I do to make sure my wife gets the highest widow’s benefit possible? Just so you know, my full retirement age benefit would have been $2,480.

According to family histor y, it is called an inverted grand and has been in the family since the 1920s. It has three pedals and a matching bench. It sounds ver y good, but probably needs tuning and some restoration.

Paul G. Mehlin emigrated from Germany in 1853. In 1889, he and his sons established their piano company in New York. They introduced their inverted grand models in the 1920s. Mehlin devised a procedure of placing the fundamentals of a grand piano inverted in an upright cabinet. One of the original Mehlin and Sons catalogs says his inverted grand embodies a similar plate, scales and sounding board as horizontal grands.

The sound was extraordinary, powerful and had an openness that was sought after by pianists. His were the first and only inverted grands made.

Based on your photo, your piano may be Mehlin’s model 3, Sheraton made with mahogany and Circassian walnut.

Unless your piano had been tuned and in mint condition, it may need work or even restoration. Contact a professional tuner for an evaluation.

P.T. Barnum (from page page 3) complain about the use of six acrobatic children in the bicycle-riding act. Barnum walked up to the superintendent of the organization and offered him $200 a week to exhibit himself to his audiences as the man who wanted to take the bread out of the mouths of children.

• Barnum discovered that elephants were a big draw so he bought several, including the famous Jumbo. When Barnum paid a fortune sightunseen for an elephant billed as a rare white elephant, he found upon receiving it that it was light grey instead of white. So Barnum had it whitewashed before each show. One aging elephant was retired from the circus and sent to live on a farm. Barnum hired the farmer to dress in Oriental garb and keep the elephant busy plowing fields. The farmer was given a railroad schedule so the elephant was hard at work in the fields whenever a train went by. Passengers would wave and snap photos of the colorful scene, resulting in much national publicity.

BARNUM MEETS BAILEY

• It was an elephant that led to Barnum teaming up with Bailey. Businessman James Bailey also owned a circus, and one of his elephants became the mother of the first baby elephant ever born in captivity. Barnum couldn’t stand to see someone else get more publicity than himself, so he offered to buy the two elephants for an exorbitant sum. But Bailey used Barnum's own technique for getting free publicity by simply leaking Barnum’s offer to the press to gain more attention for himself.

• Impressed by that clever move, Barnum recognized that Baily was a person who, like himself, was a shrewd businessman and master of publicity. “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em,” thought Barnum, and a deal was struck teaming up the two to launch the largest event show to ever go on the road: the Barnum & Bailey Circus.

• When their first show was scheduled to open in New York's Madison Square Garden, Barnum paid for 100 top newspaper reporters from all over the country to attend and review the extravaganza. The wide publicity that resulted ensured the success of the newly formed team.

• By the mid 1880s, the Barnum and Bailey Circus was earning over a million dollars a year.

Barnum invented the concept of the three-ring circus, setting a high standard for the professional circus industry.

• P.T. Barnum died in 1891 at the age of 82.

Several years later, the Ringling Brothers bought the rights to the Barnum & Bailey circus.

The combined conglomerate of resources and equipment immediately became the largest traveling circus show ever assembled on the planet. As Barnum had coined it, truly it was “The Greatest Show On Earth.” ‪
