full of rattlesnakes which he raised on his farm in Texas. On the road, he would attract large crowds in the numerous small towns where he appeared. He would demonstrate how to kill a rattlesnake by beheading it. He would then skin the snake, plunging its body into a vat of boiling water. Smithsonian were surprised to find that it had no mouth, no digestive system, and no way of eating or excreting food. What it did have, however, was an organ that was covered with sulfur crystals gleaned from the chemicalladen water of the hot vents. The crystals were covered with a dense layer of microbes, at an astounding one million per gram of sulfur. • They found that the microbes were oxidizing sulfur and freeing up energy that was feeding the tube worm. It was a case of creatures using chemosynthesis instead of photosynthesis.
• One type of bacteria called Wolbachia is present in caterpillars who feed on apple leaves. When secreted by the caterpillar, it prevents the apple leaf from turning yellow in the fall, giving the caterpillar more food to eat as autumn progresses. The same microbe, when present in bees, ants, and wasps, prevents the development of males. • A type of squid that lives in the waters off the coast of Hawaii uses bioluminescent bacteria to light up the underside of its body, mimicking moonlight shimmering on the surface, and causing the creature to be camouflaged to the point of invisibility when seen from below.

* It was noted 20th-century American humorist and journalist Don Marquis who made the following sage observation: “Procrastination is the art of keeping up with yesterday.” * Kangaroos can reach speeds of up to 44 mph, but they can’t take a single step backward. * As the holiday shopping season gets well under way, here’s an interesting tidbit to keep in mind: According to the annual Coinstar Holiday Survey, 31% of Americans don’t remember what gifts they received last year. Perhaps unsurprisingly, more women remember those details than men do.

Savvy Shopper Tricks You think shopping is what you do when you buy things. That’s true, but it’s more than that. Shopping is a competition with you on one side and retailers on the other. And whenever the ® store gets more of your money than you planned to leave behind, they’ve executed a brilliant by Mary Hunt shopping trick. They win.
Everyday CHEAPSKATE
What follow are the tricks that retailers don’t want you to know. Learn them well, and you’ll turn the tables on them. You’ll start winning at the shopping game!
TRICK: Say no to the "extended warranty." This is all you need to know: The profit margin on an extended warranty is HUGE -much greater than the profit on the item itself. It is in the store’s best interest to get you to fall for the warranty. Just keep saying, “No, thanks, the manufacturer’s warranty will be sufficient.” Why stores hate this trick: Retailers count on the easy sell and added profit bonus extended warranties provide. Short of telling you the item is a piece of junk and sure to fail, they need to do whatever they can to scare you into buying. Just say no. You win.

TRICK: Wait to buy seasonal items at clearance prices. Retailers put seasonal stuff on sale at the close of one season or after a holiday to clear their inventory storage for new, full-price merchandise. It's a self-serving purpose; they don’t do this just so you can buy stuff at huge discounts. But you should definitely do so by stocking up on holiday greeting cards, gift wrap, decorations, clothes, candy, gifts, etc., -- and then put them away for the next season or holiday. That's the way to trick them -- and win. Why stores hate this trick: Retailers are in the business to make big profits on full-priced items. They want you to feel compelled to buy new stuff each season and each holiday. Doing otherwise foils their plan. Track down these bargains starting the day after Christmas - and you win! * * * Mary invites questions, comments and tips at EverydayCheapskate.com, “Ask Mary a Question.” This column will answer questions of general interest, but letters cannot be answered individually. THE POISON SQUAD • In the late 1800s and early 1900s when food began to be more and more mass-produced, there was an increasing need to ship the goods long distances, rather than being grown locally and sold fresh. Prior to the passage of the Pure Food & Drug Act of 1906, there were no regulations whatsoever governing food processing, production, or food safety. Refrigerated shipping would not be avaiable until the 1920s. • If a package was falsely labeled turkey and contained only chicken parts, there was no law to prevent selling it that way. If formaldehyde was used as a food preservative, if flour was mixed with chalk dust, if charcoal was added to coffee grounds or if milk was diluted with river water – there was no law prohibiting that. One irate consumer returned a ten-pound bag of sugar to his local grocer with a note saying, “Not enough sand for building, and not enough sugar for cooking!” One study found that out of ten kinds of maple syrup tested, only one contained even a trace of maple syrup. • Dr. Harvey Wiley, chief chemist at the Department of Agriculture, became concerned about the worsening state of the situation, and was especially worried about the harmful substances being used as preservatives. • In 1902 Dr. Wiley received a grant of $5,000 (about $150,000 today) to set up a series of trials to test the safety of food additives. During the holiday season we hear much about Christmas, Hanukkah and the New Year, but little about a lovely, cherished custom of Scandinavia. Here, the Christmas season begins on Dec. 13 with St. Lucia Day, and ends on Jan. 13 with the feast of St. Knut. St. Lucia Day is more widely observed in Sweden than in other Scandinavian countries, and although primarily a family observance, there are public ceremonies in most offices, hospitals, factories, schools and churches. In the home, in early morning, the eldest daughter wakes the parents and the rest

Alas, it was canceled in May 2019 and at this time there are no plans to revive it. According to Slate.com, “At its peak, ‘Millionaire’ was more popular than ‘Monday Night

Chrishell Stause, who changed her name to Chrishell Hartley after marrying “This Is Us” star Justin Hartley two years ago, has worked as a real estate agent in the Los Angeles area for a while now. When she’s not acting on soaps (most recently as Jordan on “Days of Our Lives”), she’s selling homes in the Valley. “Selling Sunset” is produced by Adam Divello, who created the fictionmeets-reality hit series “The Chrishell Stause Hartley Hills.” So if you’ve watched “The Hills” or its predecessor, “Laguna Beach,” you know that it’s not exactly a straight documentary. Only Chrishell knows how much of herself she’s bringing to her character and how much is scripted. If there’s another season, it will be interesting to see if Chrishell mentions her recent split with Justin Hartley, who has filed for divorce.

Q: Okay – that makes sense. What
else?
A:
You don’t have to decide up front, but you can start thinking about if buying or leasing your solar system might be better. If you lease, there’s no money down, free installation and fixed payments for 20 years. If you don’t want to write a check all at once, there’s also a loan program from SunPower that also offers no money down and free installation. Your consultant will go over all the options with you.
Q: Nice. Anything else? A: Your installation company should

Gift Ideas for Seniors Most of us don’t need a single thing. We certainly don’t want more cute knickknacks to add to whatever clutter we already have on the shelves. Yet this is the time of year when others think they need to give us presents. Sometimes they’ll ask in advance what we’d like, and we can breathe a sigh of relief when they do. So, what do we say when they ask? Here are some thoughts: * Pay for our cable for a couple months. Or pay for our Netflix or newspaper for a whole year. Add a year to a subscription to our favorite magazine or maybe a new one for us to try out. Consider a subscription to a fruit of the month club, or one for coffee or tea. * Spend an afternoon with us sorting a
box of photos and scan them for us. Or make a special photo album of family and grandchildren. Create a 2020 calendar or load a digital photo frame with family photos. Give us a copy of “The Book of Me,” 2nd edition (Peter Pauper Press), an autobiographical journal we can fill out.

YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau
More Complaints About Social Security Service A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned the fact that the new commissioner of Social Security, a guy named Andrew Saul, has promised to improve the service people get when they call the Social Security Administration 800 number or visit a local Social Security office. I said I hoped he would be true to his word and wasn’t just blowing a lot of political smoke. Today’s questions illustrate the kinds of problems he is facing.
Q:
I wanted to share my recent expe riences when I filed for widows benefits. First, I called the Social Security Administration 800 number. I was told there would be a twohour wait before an agent would be available to help me. Can anyone really be expected to wait on hold for two hours? So I decided to hang up and tr y my luck at our local Social Security office. Because I didn’t have an appointment, I was given a number. I could tell by the numbering system that it would be a ver y long time before I would see anyone. It turned out to be four hours! The woman I was finally assigned to seemed tired, overworked and frazzled. Throughout the entire inter view, she never once looked up at me, except at the ver y end when we were all done. And frankly, I was disappointed that she never once acknowledged my situation. I had recently lost my husband and a simple expression of sympathy would have meant so much to me. I left the office feeling much worse than when I went in. What can be done about this?
shortly before 7 p.m. Some readers may wonder why I didn’t recommend that women file for their widows benefits online. It’s because claims for widows benefits must be done in person.
Q:
A few months ago, I tried filing for spousal benefits on my husband’s Social Security account. I called SSA’s 800 number, and after a 90-minute wait, I finally talked to a nice young woman named Janet. She reviewed our records and told me that I was due some extra money on my husband’s account. She set up an inter view for us at our local Social Security office. Fast-forward two months. We finally had our appointment yesterday. And imagine our shock when the local representative, a guy named Rodney who seemed to be new to the job, told me I would not be due any extra benefits until my husband dies. We left the office confused and disappointed. How do we know which agent to believe?
policy. I asked what this had to do with tr ying to start my Social Security. She said these were just routine questions. I finally decided to end the inter view. I plan to go to my local Social Security office and start the process over again. Are they also going to be asking me these strange questions?
A:
You were right. That was indeed a very weird interview. I can guess what might have happened. I wonder if you used the term “SSI” when you talked to the telephone representative? I have written many past columns about how many people confuse SSI (which stands for Supplemental Security Income, a federal welfare program), with Social Security. In other words, I think you may have possibly said, “I want to file for SSI,” when you really meant to say, “I want to file for Social Security.” The reason I think that is because all those questions you were asked about your bank accounts and property ownership are standard questions on an SSI application form. Still, even if you used the wrong term, the MON., SSA telephone representative, withJAN. a little7 bit of extra questioning, should have been able to figure out P Pleasesimilar review to carefully. Gosh, I feel so sorry for what you went through. I hope your experience with the local Social Security representative was not typical. Many years ago, when I was taking claims from Social Security customers, I used to constantly remind myself that even though I did this every day for a living, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the person I was talking to. And I knew the experience, for them, was fraught with tension, anxiety and in cases of survivors benefits like yours, a great deal of sorrow. So I always did my best to make sure the person I was talking to felt welcome and at ease. Let’s hope most SSA representatives today offer the same level of compassionate service -- and that maybe you just got stuck with someone who was having a bad day. And sadly, if my emails are any indication, your experience with SSA’s 800 number was typical. People are always complaining to me about long wait times before an agent comes on the phone to help them. They also gripe about the fact that if they are trying to set up an interview at their local Social Security office, the first available appointment is often many months in the future. As far as dealing with the long wait times, the only advice I can offer is to try calling at the very beginning or end of the workday. SSA representatives are available to answer calls between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. (local time) every Monday through Friday. I would try calling right after 7 a.m. or

be kept away from flames. They should be stored properly and separate from other types of objects. From the early 1900s to the 1940s, celluloid was used to make a variety of collectibles that included ornaments, toys, dresser sets and jewelry. Your Santa was probably also used as a Christmas tree light, which would not be advised today. Your circa-1930, lighted Santa ornament might be worth $50 to $125.

Electric Santa Ornament Lights Up Four Generations
This mark is on the back of a set of four sauce bowls that I have. Each one is decorated with dense pattern of pink flowers against a black background and trimmed with gold. They are all in mint condition. Anything you can tell me about the vintage, origin and value of my bowls will be appreciated.
Q:
Enclosed is a picture of a Santa ornament. He is about 9 inches tall and made of plastic with a metal back. There is an electric cord, and he lights up when it’s plugged in. His metal back is flat, so he can be hung on the wall or can stand on a shelf or table. All is in ver y good condition, including the electric cord and plug. There are no markings on it that would tell us anything about its origin. We know he is at least 85 years old because my husband’s mother gave it to us when our first child was born, and it was a Christmas decoration when my husband, who will be 89 next year, was a child. Now the fourth generation is enjoying this Christmas decoration, and we would appreciate any information about its background. We would also like to know if it is of any value other than as a family keepsake.
A. G. Richardson and Co. made Crown Ducal Chintzware.

* On Dec. 16, 1773, in Boston Harbor, a group of Massachusetts colonists disguised as Mohawk Indians board three British tea ships and dump 342 chests of tea into the harbor. The raid was in protest of the British Parliament’s Tea Act of 1773, which granted the East India Company a virtual monopoly on the American tea trade. * On Dec. 19, 1843, Charles Dickens’ classic story “A Christmas Carol” is published. Dickens was sent to work in a factory at age 12 when his father was thrown into debtors’ prison. * On Dec. 22, 1864, Union Gen. William Sherman presents the city of Savannah, Georgia, to President Abraham Lincoln. Sherman captured the key Confederate port after his famous March to the Sea from Atlanta.
Your bowls are examples of Crown Du cal chintzware and were made by A.G. Richardson and Co. Ltd. in England around 1930. Chintzware patterns were made by several potteries that included Shelly, Royal Winton and Royal Ducal/ A.G. Richardson and Co. Ltd. The busy transferware patterns were inspired by the chintz fabrics that were made in India from 1600 to 1800. Your set of four sauce bowls would probably fetch $50 to $75 in an antiques shop.

* On Dec. 18, 1878, John Kehoe, the last of the Molly Maguires, is executed in Pennsylvania. The Irish secret society, which had allegedly been responsible for incidences of vigilante justice in the coalfields of eastern Pennsylvania, defended their actions as attempts to protect exploited Irish-American workers. * On Dec. 21, 1945, Gen. George Patton, commander of the U.S. 3rd Army during World War II, dies from injuries suffered not in battle, but from a freak car accident less than two weeks earlier. He was 60. * On Dec. 20, 1963, more than two years after the Berlin Wall was constructed by East Germany to prevent its citizens from fleeing its communist regime, nearly 4,000 West Berliners are given one-day passes to cross into East Berlin to visit relatives. * On Dec. 17, 1979, Hollywood stuntman Stan Barrett blasts across a dry lakebed at California’s Edwards Air Force Base in a rocket- and missile-powered car, becoming the first person to travel faster than the speed of sound on land. He reached an estimated top speed of 739 mph.
Electric Santa ornament was made in the early 1900s.
A:
Without a manufacturer’s name, it can be problematic to identify the maker and origin of your Santa. Many were made in the United States, Germany and Japan. Judging from your picture and description, he was made of celluloid, an early plastic that was invented in the mid-1800s. Celluloid objects can be extremely flammable. They should not be exposed to heat and must

When most rodents eat creosote, they get sick, and if they eat enough of it, the toxins shut down the liver and kidneys, causing death. But the desert woodrat can eat all the creosote leaves it wants without any ill effect. That’s because microbes in the animal’s digestive system detoxify the offending resin before it can do any harm. If those microbes are transplanted into other rat species who don’t have them, those rats also develop the ability to digest creosote.

Keeping your eye on the ball has been a misleading phrase for decades of golf instruction. The worst misuse of the concept results when players try to keep their head down or the eyes facing the ground long after the ball has been struck. These golfers get stuck not transferring weight correctly and inhibiting proper arms swing release in the follow through. It’s better to simply allow the head to turn toward the target with the follow through. Players like Dustin Johnson and Henrik Stenson even turn their head toward the target before the ball is struck. “Looking off the ball” was a principle made popular by teacher Jimmy Ballard, who hated the eyes down syndrome. So if you do watch the ball take off in flight toward the target, you’ll truly be ADVERTISING PROOF keeping your eye on ball. Finalthe Changes DUE: 5:00
