Star Wars (from page one) • Darth Vader only appears for 12 minutes of screen time but is one of the most instantly recognizable villains of all time. • The Darth Vader role was actually played by four men. The on-screen body of Vader was bodybuilder David Prowse; the stunt double was professional fencer Bob Anderson; the voice was James Earl Jones; and the de-helmeted face of Vader in “Return of The Jedi” was Sebastian Shaw. • David Prowse’s Bristol accent was inappropriate for a master villain. George Lucas wanted Orson Welles as the voice of Darth Vader, but dropped the idea because he thought Welles’ voice was too recognizable.
• James Earl Jones was so sure the film would be a flop that he refused to allow his name to be published on the original credits. • Lucas did not learn until after his villain was already named Darth Vader and revealed as the father of Luke Skywalker, that “vader” in Dutch happens to mean “father.”

* Ever wondered why those athletic lace-ups on your feet are called sneakers? The moniker came about in the late 1800s, from their rubber soles that allowed people to walk or “sneak” around without a sound. * Laura Ingalls Wilder’s “Little House” books were once used as post-World War II propaganda. Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s occupation headquarters chose “The Long Winter” as one of the first American books to be translated into Japanese, in an effort to boost the morale of defeated, starving citizens. German translations soon followed, with a similar goal. * During the mid-1970s, author Anne Fine walked by a shop selling jewelry and old furs, the proprietor of which was a Madame Doubtfire. Fine recalled the name in 1986 when she wrote her novel “Madame Doubtfire.” Her one request to makers of the film starring Robin Williams and Sally Field was that they “not make the children bratty, and they did indulge me in that.” * Michelangelo, renowned painter of the Sistine Chapel and brilliant sculptor to boot, was surprisingly averse to personal hygiene. He also rarely changed his clothes. One of his servants remarked that the artist would spend so much time in his shoes that when he finally did take them off, “the skin came away, like a snake’s, with the boots.”

THE FOSSIL FOREST
• Axel Heiberg Island is one of the larger islands in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, and is Canada’s second northernmost island. It’s the size of Switzerland, located about 700 miles south of the North Pole. • The island has been inhabited sporadically in the past by the Inuit but was uninhabited when it was explored in 1900 by a Norwegian crew, who named it after the man who sponsored their expedition. • Norway claimed ownership of the island, but in 1930 it became part of Canada. In the 1940s the island was photographed in an aerial survey, and in 1955 two Canadian geologists surveyed it on the ground, resulting in the construction of a permanent research station in 1960.

vapor which diffused the sunlight, creating a greenhouse effect that spread the light evenly across the globe, warming both northern and southern latitudes alike.
• It’s clear that at some point in the millenia the island somehow flourished while it was still a high-latitude wetland forest, with a climate similar to that of Florida or California today. And despite allowance for the effects of contental drift, the island has consistently been located north of the Arctic Circle.
• The theory suggests the 40 days and 40 nights of torrential rain recorded in the biblical account occured with the steady collapse of the vapor canopy above, while at the same time “all the fountains of the great deep burst forth” with explosive force from the earth below. According to the account recorded in Genesis 7:20, the deluge flooded the entire earth to 20 feet above the tallest mountain. The immense volume of water required to achieve such a global catastroply is supported in large part by geological discoveries of great numbers of marine fossils found worldwide today high atop mountains thousands of feet above sea level.
• At the time, the climate at that location needed to have been much warmer. However, this island at its extreme northern latitude would have experienced about three months of perpetual light in the summer, and three months of continuous darkness during the winter. • Trees can only live where temperatures remain above freezing for at least one-third of the year, and where temperatures in July average at least 50°F. • The average temperature would have needed to be in the mid-60°s F, and seldom to have dropped below freezing in spite of experiencing three months of darkness. It’s impossible to assume that a healthy, diverse forest like this somehow adapted to these hostile, prolonged periods of harsh cold and darkness, yet still fourished.
• Excavations show that the Heiberg Island forest was wiped out by massive flooding and buried by a thick sediment of mud and silt. The forest never regrew, and the remnants remained buried in the protective sediment until being eroded away over a period of thousands of years. • Today, the permafrost on Axel Heiberg Island averages about 1,600 feet deep and the average temperature runs -33°F in January and 42°F in July. A third of the island is permanently ice covered, and the rest is bare ground.
• A remarkable discovery was made in 1985, when • Many species of trees grew there, including • Remnants of extinct animals have also been spruce, pine, redwood, larch, sycamore, and remnants of ancient trees that have been dead found, including a turtle, a bird, an alligator, and chestnut. While you may not have seen Justin Guarini much on television since he was introduced to audiences on “American Idol” in 2002, he has carved out a nice career on Broadway. For the past decade he’s starred in the Broadway and offBr oadway productions of “American Idiot,” “Romeo and Juliet” and “Wicked.” Next up for him is the new Br oadway musical based on Britney Spears’ Justin Guarini hits called “Once Upon a One More Time.” It’s a fairy tale take on the pop songs in which Guarini will play Prince Charming, with Briga Heelan as Cinderella. • James Baldwin was a British Colonel during World War I and noticed how effectively the German army used dogs to carry first aid to wounded soldiers, to run messages, and to help lay landlines. When World War II began, Baldwin petitioned Parliament to approve a similar program for using dogs to perform various functions just as the Germans did. • Baldwin invited over 80 Army officers to attend a demonstration, which proved very effective. He was then named Canine Advisor and Chief Training Officer in 1942, serving under the Royal Air Force. • What Baldwin needed now was dogs, and he placed an advertisement in newspapers throughout England asking for donations of puppies. A litter of five German Shepard pups was donated. One of the pups, a pure black dog named Jet, was particularly alert and intelligent.
He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him will I trust.” Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence. He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge. His truth shall be your shield and buckler. You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day. Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness. Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday. A thousand may fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you. Only with your eyes shall you look, and see the reward of the wicked. Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge, even the Most High, your dwelling place, no evil shall befall you, Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling; For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone. You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot. “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name. He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him, and show him My salvation.” -- Psalm 91
• Jet’s handler found the last man hiding twelve feet down. He had gone below ground and wormed his way to the cellar of another building, sealing off the entrance hole. There he lay in wait with just the small opening for a breathing hole, the small hole that Jet had found. • This gave Colonel Baldwin the idea that if a dog could detect the presence of someone so concealed below ground, then dogs could be used to find people buried after massive aerial bombardments. In 1944, Jet received training as one of the Britain’s first search and rescue dogs.

• Jet attended his first air raid rescue in 1944. Together with his handler, Jet went on to recover 125 people, 50 of whom were rescued alive. • In one remarkable instance, Jet was searching the rubble of a bombed-out hotel when he indicated a survivor high overhead. The rubble had already been thoroughly checked and rescuers were sure no one remained in the wreckage, yet Jet refused to leave the tall brick chimney shaft. He stood his ground refusing to leave for several hours, until tall ladders could be found that would reach the top of the leaning chimney stack. There rescuers found a 63-yearold woman, barely alive and covered in plaster dust, stuck on a narrow ledge which was all that remained of the top floor of the hotel. For this remarkable rescue, Jet was awarded a medal.

A lot of parents worry about empty nest syndrome: the depression, the boredom, the creeping quiet, the lonely nights and empty weekends. But the following “parents” know something far worse: Overcrowded nest syndrome: “Our three dogs are our babies; we have no human kids. Boomer is one of our three dogs (all with some pit bull heritage), and we adopted him from a no-kill shelter when he was 6 months old. He is 6 years old now. He is the second dog of our three-dog household. Lexi, his 7-year-old sister and our first dog, was a stray when we took her in. Boomer followed a couple of months later. Santos, his 8-year-old brother and the third dog that joined the household, was a fully trained Protection Sports Association (PSA) national champion who was retired by his trainer. “Boomer is a mellow dog. He is closest to me, always following me wherever I go. My dad dubbed him my “guardian angel” as a testament to what he does on a daily basis. We lived peacefully together for more than a year. We were responsible owners, putting them through obedience classes, socializing them at dog parks and taking them for walks around the neighborhood. “Despite that, during Boomer’s terrible 2s, he developed aggression issues toward other dogs. Boomer started barking at animals he saw outside the window or on TV. We tried to resolve his aggression by sending him to a month-long live-in boot camp. He got along with his brother and sister for a few more years, and we thought the aggression issue was under control. “Then one day, he went after Santos, trying to gain position at the door and leaving puncture wounds in the process. In the past four years, there have been three more “incidents” between Boomer and Santos. (Lexi stays out of it.) Boomer bit me during one of them, and my husband was injured on a separate occasion. We sent him to another livein boot camp with a local dog trainer. “We have been keeping Santos and Boomer physically separated using dog gates for the past Casey's Corner: Turn to page 10

YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau
What To Do When Social Security Reps Give You Misinformation I really do not like writing columns that are critical of my former colleagues at the Social Security Administration. But doggone it! Almost every single day, I get emails from readers who share stories with me about misinformation they’ve received from SSA representatives they’ve talked to either at the national 800 number or at their local Social Security office. It’s bad enough if the misinformation involves an incorrect answer to a relatively minor question. But when it causes someone to miss out on benefits they are due, it is a downright shame. That is why I always advise my readers to do this: If an SSA rep tells you that you are not due some benefit, but you think you are, insist on filing a claim for that benefit. You have every right to do so. That way, you will get a formal and legal decision about your eligibility, not just some rep’s (possibly incorrect) opinion. Here are some examples just from this week’s mailbag.
Q:
I am 66 years old, and two months ago, I went to my local Social Security office and filed for my own retirement benefits. I didn’t work ver y much during my married life and will be getting a rather small monthly check -- about $600. I am divorced. My exhusband is a doctor and has paid the maximum Social Security tax all his life. He is also 66 and doesn’t plan to take Social Security until he is 70. I asked the Social Security agent who took my retirement claim if I was eligible for any of his Social Security now. She told me no. She said I have to wait until he files for benefits before I can get anything on his record.
A:
The Social Security rep you talked to about this is just downright wrong. Although a woman who is currently married to her husband must wait until he applies for his own Social Security benefits before she can collect on his record, those rules do not apply to divorced women. The rules for divorced spousal benefits merely say the ex-husband has to be old enough to be eligible for benefits. (That essentially means he has to be at least 62 years old.) He does NOT have to be actually receiving those benefits.
Page 11
Tidbits of Coachella Valley
I’m guessing your ex-husband’s monthly age benefit is in the $2,600 range. At retirement full age 66, your share of that is $1,300. So, you would be due your own $600 Social Security check and another $700 from your ex-husband’s account to take you up to that $1,300 spousal level. You should march right back into your lo and insist on filing a claim for divorced office cal wife’s benefits. And in your case, the good news is that the claim you filed for your own retirement benefits a couple of months ago is what the SSA calls a “protective filing date.” That means your spousal benefit claim can be backdated to the time you filed your retirement claim.
Q:
I’m 62 and not working. My wife died last year. Our marriage was a little unusual in that my wife was the principal breadwinner. I wanted to file for widowers benefits now and save my own retirement benefits until I’m 70. I called the SSA’s helpline, and the representative I talked to told me the loophole that allowed people to do that was closed last year, and my only option was to file for my own Social Security. With her help, I started doing that claim but told the rep I wanted to put things on hold so I can think about it. That’s why I’m writing you. Was this Social Security rep correct?
benefits at 62 and then, at 70, switch to 132% of your own retirement benefit. So, get back in touch with the SSA, and tell them you want to withdraw that retirement claim you filed and instead file a claim for widowers benefits. But before you do that, you should sit down with a calculator and think about this. Because your wife had the higher wages in your family, I wonder if doing the widowers option the other way around might work out better for you? In other words, you could finish filing your claim for reduced retirement benefits. And then at age 66, you could switch to a 100% widowers rate. (Unlike retirement claims, there are no extra widowers benefits payable beyond age 66, so there would be no advantage to waiting until 70 to make that switch.)
Q:
I am 62. My husband is 66 and plans to wait until he is 70 to file for his Social Security. I wanted to file for my retirement benefits now and then switch to higher spousal benefits on my husband’s record later. But the local Social Security representative talked me out of doing this. His reasoning was this: He told me that if I took reduced benefits on my record, that reduction will also reduce any future widows benefits I am due. Is this right?
A:

What Are the Benefits of Medical ID Tags? DEAR DR. ROACH: My question is about medical bracelets and necklaces. I’ve never seen any recommendations as to what conditions would warrant wearing one nor what the inscription should say. When are they either necessary or beneficial? -- D.A.M. ANSWER: Medical ID tags can be useful. They serve to alert medical personnel of potentially important medical conditions when someone is not capable of providing that information, whether due to temporary incapacity (such as being unconscious in a motor vehicle accident) or permanent disability (such as intellectual disability). In my opinion, the most appropriate use of these tags is when there is a potentially lifethreatening medical condition that would not be obvious to emergency medical personnel. Some examples of these would include anaphylactic reaction to medications or latex; the presence of an illness that can cause temporary disability (epilepsy, diabetes, Addison’s disease); and medical conditions that might affect use of some common treatments, such as bleeding disorders, organ transplant status and medical implants (such as implantable defibrillators). Personal and contact information is a natural set of complementary information to have on a medical tag. Some newer tags include electronic information, but this is in its infancy. These include the use of near-field technology to let emergency personnel read the information (if they also have the technology); phone numbers the emergency personnel can call to get more information; and QR codes to allow emergency personnel with a smartphone to go to a webpage with more detailed information. Most smartphones also have the ability to store information that can be read

Tidbits of Coachella Valley in an emergency, even by someone without the person’s phone password. I highly recommend taking advantage of this feature. Many of the ID tags I see have information that is not likely to be helpful. Listing chronic conditions like high blood pressure or high cholesterol is not necessary. Finally, one of the biggest benefits of a medical ID tag is a little peace of mind. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Regarding a recent column: If a body does not need help in maintaining pH balance, why does the consumption of different foods cause changes in urine pH? -- K.F. ANSWER: The body has two main organs with which to regulate pH, the acid/base status of the body based on food intake, exercise, medications and other causes that would perturb the body’s pH, which is very tightly regulated and slightly alkaline at about 7.4. The more important and faster-acting is the lung. By increasing the respiratory rate, we excrete more carbon dioxide, which is in equilibrium with carbonic acid. Breathing more deeply and quickly can move the blood pH toward the alkaline side. This usually happens without our being aware of it. The kidneys are the other important organ for long-term regulation of pH. The kidneys can regulate reabsorption of carbonic acid in the tubule, increasing or reducing acid secretion. So, urine that is more acidic than normal may mean the body is ridding itself of excess dietary acid and thus making blood pH more alkaline. Ammonia is another way the kidney can regulate pH balance. Blood pH does not vary more than a minute amount from its expected level except in cases of critical illness, disturbances in kidney function or diseases that affect control of breathing. * * * Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. VETERANS POST by Freddie Groves
VA to Suspend Schools That Abuse GI Bill The Department of Veterans Affairs plans to stop the enrollment of veterans under the GI Bill at a number of universities due to “erroneous, deceptive, or misleading” practices involving enrollment, advertising and sales. The Federal Trade Commission and various state attorneys general took a close look over the past five years and determined that the schools’ actions were in violation of U.S. laws. The enrollment suspensions begin on May 9, 2020. Those schools with suspended GI Bill certifications include: Bellevue University, Temple University, University of Phoenix, Colorado Technical University and American InterContinental University. Current students can stay in their programs if they have been continuously enrolled, but the schools won’t be allowed to give enrollment certifications to new students or any student who is coming back after a break. The schools have 60 days to take corrective action and provide proof of that to the VA, should they want to fight the suspensions. The VA isn’t the only entity that could take steps. Individual state departments that approve the courses might take actions of their own. If a state steps forward and withdraws approval for courses, the VA would no longer pay benefits to enrolled students who choose to continue. At the end of a five-year investigation, in August 2019, Career Education Corp. (parent company of Colorado Technical University and American InterContinental University) paid $30 million to settle charges levied by the FTC that it claimed to be affiliated with or recommended by the U.S. military or could help with job searches. In December 2019, the FTC went after Phoenix University to the tune of $191 million for deceptive advertising aimed at military and Hispanic students, and false impressions of jobs at major companies such as Microsoft and Twitter. Current GI Bill recipients have been notified by the VA. For more information, contact the VA’s Education Call Center at 888-442-4551. * * * Freddy Groves regrets that he cannot person-
ally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply2@gmail.com.

How to Get Help from Social Security During the Coronavirus Pandemic DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: I’ve heard that the Social Security Administration has closed all their offices because of the coronavirus pandemic. How are they still helping people if they’re closed down? -- Recently Retired Dear Recently: You are correct, the Social Security Administration has closed its 1,200 field offices throughout the country to protect benefit recipients and workers from the coronavirus pandemic. Their offices have been closed since March 17, and how long they will be closed is unclear because it depends on the course of the pandemic. Brittany Girls Series Inspired by British Countryside Q:
I have enclosed a photo of an antique porcelain pitcher. It is decorated with a scene of a young woman holding a basket. She is wearing a long dress and a head scarf. Above her is a countr y scene against a blue band. The pitcher is about 6 inches tall and is in excellent condition. On the bottom of the pitcher are the words “Royal Bayreuth, Bavaria.” Any information regarding the age, maker and origin will be appreciated.
Oyster plates were popular during the Victorian Era.
A:
You have an antique oyster plate. Each depression, or well, was used for serving an oyster, and lemon or vinaigrette was served in the center. Oyster plates were extremely popular in the Victorian Era. Yours was made by Remy Delinieres in Limoges, France. He started his whiteware factory around 1879. He did not decorate his porcelain until 1881 when he established his decorating workshop. China painting was all the rage with ladies of leisure in the United States. Some of his whiteware was exported to the United States to be used by enthusiastic amateur artists. In 1900, the factory was acquired by L. Bernardaud and Co. Oyster plates were also produced in Germany and the United States. Yours was made between 1891 and 1900. Values cover a wide range, from $50 to $125. Some prices can go as high as several hundred dollars. * * * Address your questions to Anne McCollam, P. O. Box 247, Notre Dame, IN 46556. Items of a general interest will be answered in this column. Porcelain Brittany Girls series was made by Royal Bayreuth.
A:
Your pitcher was made at the Tettau Porcelain Factory. in Bavaria. They have been located in the small village of Tettau in the beautiful Bavarian ski country since 1794. Porcelain that was marked “Royal Bayreuth, Bavaria” was made from 1870 to 1919. It is believed that porcelain pieces marked “Royal Bayreuth” were intended for export to the United States. Your pitcher is decorated in the style of their Brittany Girls series that was inspired by the Britain’s rural countryside. The transfer print scenes decorated novelty pieces that include pitchers, candlestick holders, dresser sets, teapots, small dishes and salt and pepper shakers. Your pitcher was made around 1900. Similar pieces can be seen selling on the internet in the range of $45 to $65. *** Enclosed is the mark on an an-

Rehinge the Finish
One of the swing’s power leaks that I often see, particularly with a lot of adult male golfers, is a restricted release of the hands or wrists in the follow through. These players have a tightening of the left arm and hand in such a way that the club rarely makes its way behind the player’s neck. It should be considered a fundamental that the left wrist re-hinges in the follow through so that by the finish position it’s noticeably bent. Most of the problem stems from excessive grip pressure and a “controlling” effort to guide the ball to the target. The correction usually rests in finishing the swing with a note to the left wrist’s bent orientation. These players shouldn’t worry so much about when and where to think about the proper wrist action through impact, but simply finishing in the correct orientation. This usually is a progressive fight through the course of ball striking on the range, so continue to rehearse the full finish before each shot. The ADVERTISING PROOF swing speed will surely pick up when the wrists are freed up throughout the entire full swing. 5:00 Final Changes DUE:
