2001: Oddysey (from page one) computer with a human personality named HAL. After the crew disapproves of some of Hal's decisions and decide to disconnect him, he retaliates by systematically killing off all the crew except Dave, who escapes. • After Dave manages to dismantle HAL's ability to function, he hears a pre-recorded message stating that the purpose of the mission, which had been unknown to the crew, is to locate another monolith on planet Jupiter. • It is presumed that HAL had been given conflicting orders: first, to keep the purpose of the mission secret; and second, to never tell a lie. The program conflict caused a psychotic break in the computer’s reasoning circuits. • Dave continues to Jupiter and finds a monolith orbiting the planet. He gets inside a pod to get a closer look, and is swept into a vortex-style StarGate where he sees himself at various ages and growing older. As another monolith appears before him, he dies and is evidently reincarnated as a fetus, presumably to start a new race of superior star children. • The film garnered a cult following and became the highest-grossing North American film of 1968. • The script was inspired by Arthur C. Clark’s short story “The Sentinel” and Clark worked closely with director Stanley Kubrick during the the film's production.

* In the 1st century AD, Roman men as well as women used cosmetics -- lightening their skin with powder, applying red pigment to their cheeks, and painting their nails, though you’d hardly want to use their form of nail polish today -- a nasty mixture of pig fat and blood. They also painted their heads to camouflage bald spots! * Princess Leia’s “Star Wars” hairdo, which she referred to as “hairy earphones” and a “hair don’t,” was inspired not by bagels but women of the Mexican Revolution. * Pound cake got its name from its original ingredients: a pound of butter, a pound of eggs, a pound of flour and a pound of sugar. * In 2009, 59-year-old Italian neurosurgeon Claudio Vitalae had a heart attack in the middle of performing a brain surgery. He powered through it when he realized his patient would never recover if he stopped, despite the urging of his staff and his chest pains worsening. Half an hour after finishing the surgery, Mr. Vitale had an angioplasty, later telling the press, “I’m not a hero, I only did my duty.” * The first documented use of toilet paper dates to 6th century A.D. China. * No U.S. president has ever died in the month of May. * Alcatraz was the only prison to offer its inmates hot showers, but don’t make the mistake of thinking that had anything to do with showing kindness to the prisoners. Rather, the assumption was that if they were used to hot shower water, they’d be unable to cope with the frigid waters of the San Francisco Bay and thus be deterred from an escape attempt. *** Thought for the Day: “I cannot teach anybody anything. The mixture won’t get as thick and creamy as buttermilk, but it will help create fluffy pancakes and quick bread just the same. UNIVERSE WEIGHTLESS

The right professional dog training can solve 95 percent of dog problems -- the majority of which might better be described as people problems. But there are some problems training can’t touch, and often that’s because people ignored the warning signs and put off getting help. Keep reading: “Last week, Seven, our 10-year-old German Shepherd, bit my 2-year-old daughter causing her to get stitches in her face. The incident was caused by a granola bar being left on the couch. Seven snatched the bar when I stepped out of the room for a minute. Our daughter either wanted to get it back or wanted to see what Seven had, and Seven attacked her. She required four stitches in her face and sustained a few other minor bites. Seven didn’t bite and thrash. Rather, he growled and nipped multiple times. “The positive about Seven: He is a very loving dog. He loves to play fetch and wrestle and to just cuddle up with you. He listens well and is trained to sit, stay and come. He is a great dog for car rides, and he sits still for baths, teeth brushing and coat brushing. He loves to run! He and my daughter get along all right. They don’t play a whole lot together, but Seven would come up to the couch where my daughter would be sitting and wait for a pet or a scratch. “The negative about Seven: He is overprotective and displays signs of food-aggression. He also has a barking issue that bark collars haven’t been able to solve. He doesn’t like small dogs or neighborhood cats.” These folks have a problem -- and so does Seven. The wife wants to get rid of the dog; the husband wants to keep him. She has called local shelters, hoping to find someone who will take Seven and find him a new home. So far, no luck. The unfortunate reality is that Seven is old, he’s big, he’s untrained, and he now has a history of biting. The wife is losing hope and considering euthanasia; her Casey's Corner: Turn to Page 8

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

My First Day on the Job I’ve been writing this column and answering people’s questions about Social Security for more than 20 years. And more often than not, I’ve been answering the same questions over and over again. And I really don’t mind that because I understand there are always new people reading this column who haven’t seen the answers before. Other people have been reading the column for a long time, but finally, their Social Security time has come, and they can’t remember how I answered a certain question in the past. So, I get it. My role is to go over this stuff again and again so that, eventually, everyone who needs to know about Social Security understands how the program affects them. But every once in a while, I like to take a break from that routine and instead share a few stories from my long career as a Social Security Administration employee. And today, here is one of those stories. In 1973, I was a brand-new SSA employee assigned to my very first Social Security office. It was a recently opened branch office in the tiny farming community of Litchfield, Illinois. At the time, the office had all of five employees. I would be number six. There was a manager, two claimstaking personnel (I would be one of those), a teletype operator (does anyone remember teletype machines?) and two clerical employees. Trying to impress my new boss, I showed up early on my first day. Just before the office was scheduled to open, the senior claims representative and the branch manager were walking in the employee entrance. It was a heavy metal door -- and

a gust of wind came up and slammed the door onto the hand of the claims rep. There were screams! There was blood! There was pandemonium! The manager turned to me and said, “Are you Tom -- the new guy?” I nodded rather sheepishly. And then he said, “Well, you’re in charge. I’ve got to get Wanda to the hospital!” As they were heading back out the door, he saw the frightened look on my face. “Don’t worry,” he said, “this is a small office. Nothing unusual ever happens here.” Five minutes later, one of the clericals un locked the front door to the office. About a halfdozen people filed in, including a very demonstrative old man who marched right up to the front desk and barked out, “I demand to see the manager!” The receptionist explained that the manager was called away on an emergency. But this didn’t deter the very determined old goat. He said, “Well, someone must be in charge, and I demand to talk to that person.” The receptionist looked back at me and said, “Mr. Margenau, can you help?” I was still shaking from the door-slamming injury incident and was nervously setting up my desk -- unpacking a little box of personal effects I had brought into the office. But I mustered up what little courage I could and walked up to the front desk. “Hi, I’m Tom Margenau,” I stammered. I was about to explain to him that not only was this my very first day in this office but it was also my very first day working for the Social Security Administration (not counting the four-month training class from which I had just graduated). But before I could do that, he jabbed an angry finger in my chest and blurted out, “If you’re the guy in charge, I’ve got a bone to pick with you!” The teletypist came up to me and whis pered in my ear: “Why don’t you take him back to the boss’s office.” And away we went. So, there I was, all of 10 minutes into my first day on the job, and I was sitting in the manager’s office about to get an earful from a very irate customer!

Page 9

It turns out the guy was upset because he got a letter from the office -- and the letter had a couple of typos in it. He just thought this was very unprofessional. “I can’t believe my tax dollars are paying for this kind of incompetence!” he stammered. What I wanted to say was this: “Are you serious? I mean, with all the problems in the country right now (the Vietnam War was dragging on; President Richard Nixon was about to get impeached, etc., etc.), you’re upset because you got a letter with a misspelled word and a comma out of place? C’mon -- get real, buddy!” But, of course, that’s not what I said. Instead, I apologized and told him that such work was unacceptable. He wasn’t satisfied. He asked me what I was going to do about it. My mind raced. How could I placate this guy, I wondered. And then I hatched a plan. I went back out into the office and talked to the secretary, Sandy, whose initials were on the letter. She looked at the letter and said: “I remember this. It was a bad day. I had to get out something like 20 letters that day. And I obviously messed this one up. I’m sorry.” (This was before computers, or even word processors. Letters were done on typewriters, with mimeograph paper for copies. It was a labor-intensive, messy business.) Anyway, Sandy and I talked things over, and we set my plan in motion. I went back into the manager’s office with Mr. Obnoxious. And then, as Sandy and I had prearranged, I called her into the office. “Miss Smith,” I scolded, “this kind of work is totally unacceptable. In the future, let’s make sure that all letters that leave this office are perfect, with no typos or other errors, OK?” “Yes, Mr. Margenau,” she said apologetically. “I’m really sorry. This will never happen again.” And I excused her from the office. (Sandy and I should have gotten Best Actor/Actress awards!) Mr. Obnoxious turned to me and said, “I like a man who takes the bull by the horns. You handled this situation like a true professional. Thank you very much.” And he left the office a satisfied customer. After he left, the other employees in the office came up to me and thanked me for handling the boisterous old goat. I was sweating profusely and slumped down into the chair by my new desk and finished setting out my calendar, stapler, pen holder and other office minutiae. Then I got ready to get on with my career as a newly minted public servant for the Social Security Administration. About two hours later, the office manager returned with the injured claims representative, whose right hand was wrapped up in a thick cast with a sling around her neck. The manager looked at me and said, “Well, just like I told you, right? I bet nothing happened while we were gone!” All I could do was smile. * * * If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has the answer. Contact him at thomas.margenau@comcast.net. Morning Stiffness Is Sign of Osteoarthritis DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 67-year-old black female who’s been diagnosed with “a little arthritis” in my right hip. Now retired from a desk job, I unfortunately still am not getting enough exercise. My issue is that after sitting for a length of time, I’m in excruciating pain and can’t stand up at all. Once I straighten up and get moving, the pain subsides. I’ve been told “you’re getting old,” but I’m not old! I’m about 30 pounds overweight. Also, when I stand for any length of time, my lower back aches. Would taking a morning walk and a yoga class alleviate this problem? I’m so embarrassed when I get out of my car or get up from the dinner table. -- S.H.

Osteoarthritis affects a fair number of 67-year-olds, but it’s important to remember that it’s not your age that is causing the pain: It’s the arthritis. Although we know of no treatments that can reverse the course of osteoarthritis, medications (including a few supplements), exercise and physical therapy all can ease symptoms and improve function. Losing weight takes stress off the joints and is recommended, but is not easy. Finally, severe arthritis can be treated surgically, with a joint replacement. That’s not a procedure to take lightly or have done too early. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m 85 years old. I have numbness in my hands -- sometimes the right, sometimes the left; sometimes both hands or not at all. It lasts only a while. My doctor feels that it’s a pinched nerve in my neck. Can you give me any advice? -- J.B.

ANSWER: A pinched nerve in the neck becomes more prevalent as people age. The nerve can be compressed by bony structures in people with osteoarthritis in the neck (this is spinal stenosis), or by disk material in someone with a herniated disk. Having symptoms on both sides is less common than having symptoms consistently on one side only. A careful physical exam can give clues that this is the case, but an MRI or other imaging study is the best way to be sure of the diagnosis. Hand numbness also may be caused by ANSWER: There are many types of arthe nerve being “pinched” in other locations: in thritis, and the answer to your question varies a the carpal tunnel in the wrist or in the cubital tunbit depending on type. VETERANS  POST  by Freddie Groves

An App Just for COVID Ah, here we go. I recently wrote here about a few Department of Veterans Affairs apps that might be helpful in reducing stress. Now we hear from the VA that it’s created a specific mobile app to reduce stress caused by the coronavirus. This one, COVID Coach, focuses on four areas: manage stress, learn, mood check and find resources. Each category has subgroups. Manage Stress, for example, has challenges, tools and a favorites area. Under Challenges, there are categories such as creating space for myself, handling anger and irritability, and sleep struggles. Mood Check covers setting a goal, and tracking well-being, anxiety mood and PTSD symptoms. Under Learn, there’s staying safe, staying healthy, staying balanced and more. Finding Resources has some valuable options -- crisis support, substance use support, meeting your needs, for parents and caregivers -- with direct links right inside the app. Staying Strong has a photo of a flower growing out of what looks like cracked, dry dirt. No, I’m not a gardener, but I get it. It’s where we are right now with this whole lockdown coronavirus thing. We need to come out the other side of this safe, sane and healthy. This app can help. It was created by the VA’s mental health people and requires iOS 11.0 or later for Apple products or 4.4 for Android. There’s nothing in the app that requires a password or credit card info, so there’s no data mining. You can get this free app from the Apple app store and Google play. Click on the icons at mobile.va.gov/app/covid-coach and it will take you to those two sources. If you have questions, contact them at MobileMentalHealth@va.gov. And yes, anyone, not just veterans, can make use of the app. Get the app, fill out the selfreporting questionnaires (legit ones from the VA and DoD) and check in with the app every day. It isn’t necessary to hire a lawyer to prepare an advance directive. There are free or low-cost resources available today to help you create one, and it takes only a few minutes from start to finish.

What to Know About Advance Care Planning in the Age of Covid-19 DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: All of the horrible coronavirus carnage has me thinking about my own end-of-life decisions if I were to get sick. Can you recommend some good resources that can help me create a living will or advance directive, or other pertinent documents? I’ve put it off long enough. --Almost 70

One that I highly recommend that’s completely free to use is My Directives (MyDirectives.com). This is an online tool and mobile app that will help you create, store and share a detailed, customized digital advance directive. Their easy-to-use platform combines eight thoughtful questions to guide you through the process. If you’re not computer savvy, ask a family member or trusted friend to help you. The advantage of having a digital advance directive versus a paper document is being able to access it quickly and easily via smartphone, which is crucial in emergency Ad Proof: situations when they’re most often needed.

Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment, or POLST (sometimes called Medical Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment, or MOLST). A POLST form translates your end-of-life wishes into medical orders to be honored by your doctors. To learn more about your state’s program or set one up, see POLST.org. Readers should also know that if you’ve already prepared an advanced directive paper document, a POLST form or the VA advance directive form 10-0137, you can upload, store and share these documents too at MyDirectives. com. And finally, to ensure your final wishes are followed, make sure to inform your family members, health care proxy and doctors that you have the directive in place. If you make a digital advance directive or have uploaded your existing forms, you can easily share them electronically to everyone involved. Or, if you make a paper advance directive that isn’t uploaded, you should provide everyone copies to help prevent stress and possible arguments among your survivors.

• In one early scene, a spacecraft is taking Dr. Floyd to the Moon when the flight attendant walks up the aisle upside down. This was accomplished with a stationary camera bolted to a set that revolved, so while the actress always remained on the bottom, the camera rotated 180 degrees making her appear inverted. • The realistic-looking effects of the astronauts floating weightless both in space and inside the spacecraft were accomplished by suspending the actors from wires attached to the top of the set and placing the camera beneath them. The actors’ bodies blocked the camera's view of the wires making them appear to float weightless.

• In one scene, a pen appears to float through space until the stewardess plucks it out of the air, an effect accomplished by taping the pen to a slowly moving clear glass plate held in front of the camera. • Voice-activated computers, flat-screen monitors, tablets, the likes of Siri and Alexa, and HAL’s ability to play chess are among the far-sighted novelties in the film that have since become commonplace in real life. 
