Soda Pop (from page one) • In 1819, the first “soda fountain” was patented by Samuel Fahnestock, a Pennsylvania doctor who invented a system using a barrel of carbonated water with a pump and spigot to dispense it. The new system enabled pharmacies to serve carbonated water by the glass. Bottled soda water didn’t come along until 1835. • Flavored drinks began around 1820 with the addition of ginger root, then lemon in the 1830s, and tonic in 1858. Ginger ale was created in 1851 in Belfast, Ireland, by Thomas Cantrell, an Irish apothecary and surgeon. A Canadian pharmacist, John McLaughlin, opened a carbonated water plant in Toronto in 1890, where he began mixing the water with flavorings and fruit juices. He patented his recipe, Canada Dry Pale Ginger Ale, in 1907. • By 1860, 123 plants bottling soft drink water were in operation in the U.S. Pressurized seltzer bottles flavored with at least 15 different fruits became available, and the term “pop” was coined in 1861.

other carbonated mixtures, Alderton touted Dr. Pepper’s medicinal properties, with advertising stating that it “aids digestion and restores vim, vigor, and vitality.” • • Yet another pharmacist was hard at work on a new formula, this time in North Carolina. In 1898, Caleb Bradham blended kola nut extract, vanilla, and “rare oils,” calling his blend “Brad’s Drink,” introducing it at his New Bern drug store. He later changed the name to Pepsi-Cola, named after the terms “pepsin” and “cola.” He also peddled his invention as a drink that aided digestion, much like the pepsin enzyme – even though Pepsi didn’t even contain enzyme! • An average 8-oz. can of soda pop contains about 30 grams of sugar, or about 7 teaspoonsful, and contains more than 100 calories.

Royal Crown beverages broke ground in many areas, including the first canned soda, the first caffeine-free soda, and the first 16-oz. size. California chemist Neil Ward experimented with a formula for an orange-based soda for four years before marketing his new beverage, Orange Crush, in 1916. The drink featured orange pulp in the bottles to give it that “fresh squeezed” appeal, although the pulp was added after the brewing process. Still popular today, by Crush products come in the additional flavors of grape, strawberry, pineapple, watermelon, 1. W peach, cherry, and grapefruit. In 1929, Charles Grigg launched a new drink sc with a complicated name, “Bib-Label Lithiated m Lemon-Lime Soda.” Years later, Grigg finally agreed the name was far too cumbersome to se pronounce and changed it to simply 7Up.

CLYDESDALES

The Clydesdales are well-known for their appearances across the country and in Budweiser advertisements. This week, Tidbits examines the particulars of these majestic animals. • The horses take their name from their area of origin, Clydesdale, Scotland. The muscular breed was first developed for heavy farm work and hauling coal in 1715, when a Flemish stallion was mated with local mares. But the name “Clydesdale” as a breed wasn’t used until 1826, and the first breed registry was formed much later in 1877. They were introduced in the United States in the early 1840s and throughout the world by the late 1800s. • In the 1920s and 1930s Clydesdales were much smaller than today, but the breeding was changed in the 1940s to produce taller horses to showcase their majestic stature in parades and shows. • The average Clydesdale weighs about 2,000 pounds and stands 17 to 18 hands at the withers, or between 68 to 72 inches tall from

One of the great myths passed down from generation to generation of dog owners is that toy dogs are impossible to housebreak. Recently, I got a call from a couple who live with two dogs, one of them a toy breed. They found housebreaking the little one to be “impossible” and rationalized for years with the usual: “He’s small, so it’s only a little bit.” Nevertheless, they eventually tore out their carpets and tiled their home because it’s easier to clean and they could no longer bear the smell. “A little bit” goes a long way. Now, their patience exhausted, he called to run their current solution by me: Diapers. While his confession was sheepish and he claimed it was his wife’s idea, he again fell back on the old tried and true: “It’s impossible to housebreak toy dogs. ... Right?” Wrong. The first thing you have to understand is housebreaking is a people problem, not a dog problem. Your pooch is perfectly fine with when and where he goes. You’re the one who wants it the way you want it. So you have to teach him. The next thing you have to understand is punishment is not teaching. It’s not his fault that your grand plan for the elimination of his waste didn’t come programmed in his DNA. You must first teach him what you want, and then correct -- don’t punish -- him when he makes a mistake. Scolding, yelling and rubbing his nose in it won’t accomplish anything, and these tactics are likely to backfire with the creation of a fearful and possibly aggressive personality. Let’s start with some basics. Housebreaking means the dog never eliminates in the house. Not even a little bit. Not even once in a while. Not on paper. Not on pads. Never. Nowhere. Nada. Housebreaking is an excellent idea, and it’s Cody's Corner: Turn to Page 8

am wondering if blood was not getting to her brain or if she was starting to get dementia? -- G.M.

M.D.

Insomnia One of Many Prednisone Side Effects

ANSWER: I am very sorry about your wife. People who have blockages in the heart often have blockages in other blood vessels, such as those in the leg, but also those going to the brain. Poor blood flow to the brain may cause changes to memory and other specific problems. A stroke is very much like a heart attack. Most strokes are caused by poor blood flow to a specific area of the brain, and if it is severe enough, long enough, brain tissue will die, causing loss of function. People who have had multiple strokes are more frequently affected by dementia, called vascular dementia or multiinfarct dementia. I don’t know if this was the case for your wife, but it is certainly plausible. People who notice loved ones having memory lapses should get an evaluation sooner rather than later, as sometimes there are therapies that work better when started earlier. *** DEAR DR. When You Need a Helping Hand

Regarding the COVID-19 part of your question, as of right now, the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) does not recommend transplantation of organs from donors known to have the virus. So, if you were to contract the coronavirus and die, your organs would probably not be used. However, this may change as treatments are developed and more is learned about this insidious virus. Here’s what else you should know about becoming a donor: Donating Facts: In the United States alone, more than 112,000 people are on the waiting list for organ transplants. But because the demand is so much greater than the supply, those on the list routinely wait three to seven years for an organ, and more than 7,000 of them die each year. Organs that can be donated include the kidneys, liver, lungs, heart, pancreas and intestines. Tissue is also needed to replace bone, tendons and ligaments. Corneas are needed to restore sight. Skin grafts help burn patients heal and often mean the difference between life and death. And heart valves repair cardiac defects and damage.

for improving moods. It is still in use today for treating patients with bi-polar conditions. The government ultimately banned the use of lithium citrate in sodas in 1948. 7Up wasn’t Grigg’s first undertaking in the soft drink world. In 1919, his first soda, an orange drink named Whistle was marketed, followed by his second orange flavored drink he called Howdy. But when he found these drinks couldn’t catch up with the popularity of Orange Crush, he moved on to strictly lemonlime flavors. By 1920, the U.S. was home to more than 5,000 bottling plants. The first automated vending machine that dispensed soda into paper cups was introduced during this decade. Brothers Barney and Ally Hartman got their start as employees at an Orange Crush bottling plant in Augusta, Georgia. After the Great Depression shut the plant down, they moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, where they began experimenting, trying to invent a soda that would be the perfect mixer to complement their favorite whiskey. When the brothers found the perfect blend, they named their creation Mountain Dew, a slang term used by the Scottish and Irish to describe Scotch whiskey, and by the Appalachian people as a nickname for moonshine. The bottle was designed to look like it was a bootlegged beverage brewed from an Appalachian mountain still. It was decorated with an old wooden outhouse and hillbillies, including Grandpappy, a bearded old hillbilly brandishing a longbarreled gun. The drink they introduced in the 1940s had a much lighter, less sweet taste than the one we know today, and it also wasn’t the greenish-yellow color we’re now familiar with. The taste and color changes were made by a new marketing manager in 1958. It wasn’t until 1964, when Pepsi bought the company that Mountain Dew went nationwide. 
