Should I use the inheritance to pay off the mortgage or, as friends suggest, invest it in a variety of stocks and bonds and keep my mortgage because the interest is tax-deductible? -- Eleanor

Dear Eleanor: You need to check with your tax professional, but if I were you, I’d pay off that mortgage so fast the lender would get dizzy. Investing in your debt is always a wise decision, because you cannot lose.

If you pay off your mortgage, no matter what happens to the economy, you’ll enjoy a rent-free retirement. As for the deductibility of mortgage interest, it is highly overrated. It’s a consolation prize for those who have no choice but to pay on a mortgage.

Let’s say you pay $1,000 a year in mortgage interest and you are in the 28% tax bracket. By deducting that $1,000 from your taxable income, you realize a $280 reduction in the tax you owe. Does that make sense to you to choose to pay $1,000 so you can get $280 back? If so, I have a better deal for you.

You probably know that ticks cause Lyme disease in dogs. But did you know that removing a diseased tick in the early stages of attachment could save your dog a lifetime of pain, decreased mobility and possible damage to the heart, kidneys and nervous system?

You probably know to keep your dog away from chocolate and candy. But did you know that a handful of raisins could induce kidney disease?

And would you recognize the symptoms of failing kidneys?

You probably know that a limping dog is an uncomfortable dog. But did you know that a dog with a “skip” to his gait might have a patellar luxation? And did you know that a consequence of patellar luxation is degenerative joint disease that causes chronic pain and lameness?

Social Security -- Don’t Drop the Ball

I frequently get emails from people who have lost out on Social Security benefits they might have been due. And they are looking for somebody to blame. They usually don’t like it when I have to turn around and tell them it is their fault.

I’m not a huge sports fan. In fact, it’s interesting that, in our family, my son and I are just barely interested in baseball, football, hockey, et al., whereas my wife and my daughter are huge sports fans and have been known to travel the country (previrus) to watch football games, tennis matches, etc.!

Despite my lack of interest in the world of sports, I’m going to use a sports analogy to make the primary point of this column. When it comes to your eligibility for Social Security -- what benefits to file for and when to file for those benefits -- the ball is in your court. Don’t drop it! In other words, it’s up to you to educate yourself about the Social Security program and to decide when and how to file for whatever benefits you might be due. I’ve saved up some emails to illustrate this point.

Besides, the government cannot possibly

keep tabs on every man, woman and child in this country and tell each of them when they might be due various kinds of Social Security benefits.

Having said that, there are times when

the Social Security Administration might be able to contact people to tell them they should file for some kind of Social Security benefit. That usually occurs if there is enough information in a file that could lead to a potential claim. For example, if a woman were getting Social Security benefits on her husband’s record and the SSA gets a notification that the husband has died, they would contact the wife to let her know she should file a widows claim.

Q: My wife died at age 50 many years

ago. I never remarried. I just turned 66 and talked to someone at the Social Security Administration about filing for my retirement benefits. I was shocked when the agent mentioned that I was potentially due widowers benefits when I turned 60. Why didn’t anyone tell me about this before? Just a little bit of research (and, frankly, a little bit of common sense) would have told you that if you take your benefits early, they are reduced, and the reduction stays with you forever.

Q: I filed online for my Social Security benefits to start at age 68 in August. I just learned from a friend that I could have received six months’ worth of retroactive benefits. I was never made aware of this. I have been cheated out of a lot of money because of someone’s incompetence. Do I have any recourse?

For starters, seasonal flu symptoms come on pretty quickly. However, COVID-19 develops gradually over a period of a few days and then either fades out or gets worse.

Common shared COVID symptoms include fever, sore throat, muscle aches, cough, headache, fatigue and even chest pain. Pinkeye and a dry cough are associated with COVID-19, while it’s now thought that a fever is more likely with the flu, as are diarrhea and nausea.

Many people are having their temperatures taken these days before entering public spaces. But fever occurs in only half of COVID-19 cases. Fever does not rule out COVID-19, but the absence of fever makes flu unlikely.

You’re also unlikely to have a runny or stuffy nose with the flu, but you may with COVID-19. What sometimes happens within the nose with COVID-19 is loss of smell and, often as a consequence, loss of taste, too.
