DIATOMACEOUS EARTH This is my personal favorite way to get rid of ants because it is natural, quick and sure. Diatomaceous earth is nontoxic and harmless for pets and kids. Important: Make sure you are using food-grade diatomaceous earth, NOT swimming pool DE, which has been chemically altered and will be completely ineffective to kill ants and other bugs. Sprinkle the food-grade DE outside around the perimeter of your home. You can also safely sprinkle it inside where you see the ants -- along baseboards especially. Do not wet the DE or it will not work. If it should get wet, reapply with new, dry food-grade DE. Once the ants walk in the fine powder, they’ll die. The DE quietly destroys their exoskeletons. VINEGAR A 50-50 ratio of water and plain white vinegar can also deter ants. Use this mixture to spray on countertops, windowsills and high-traffic areas.

Spray any areas where ants are feeding or accessing your house with WD-40. The spray will kill ants and serve as a deterrent from further access as long as residue from the spray remains. Not sure where they’re coming in? Spray WD-40 along the outside perimeter of the house. They will not cross it because ants hate the smell of WD-40 (so do rabbits!). Repeat as necessary. CHALK Get rid of ants by drawing a line around your home’s entry points using ordinary blackboard or sidewalk chalk. The calcium carbonate repels ants. BOILING WATER If fire ants plague your yard or patio and you’re tired of getting painful stings from those tiny attackers, a flowerpot can help you quench the problem. Place the pot upside down over the anthill. Carefully pour boiling water through the drain hole, and you’ll be burning them and their house for good. CITRUS To ant-proof your kitchen, you don’t need insecticides or ant traps. Just give it the lemon treatment. First, squirt some lemon juice on door thresholds and windowsills. Then squeeze the lemon juice into any holes or cracks where the ants are getting in. Finally, scatter small slices of lemon peel around the outdoor entrance. FINE POWDER One EC reader reports that cheap baby powder in a plastic can works to get rid of ants. Drown them in it. They can’t make it back to the nest because they can’t run, and they’ll dry out before they can summon help. You will need to vacuum up the powder, but it doesn’t stink. SPEARMINT GUM Another reader puts a stick of spearmint gum opened slightly on each shelf and drawer, in areas frequented by ants and other pantry-prone bugs. “Since doing this I have not seen a single bug. Pet Parents and the Dog Children that Bite Them A big part of my job is talking to people about their dogs. Now more than ever, many of those conversations require me to interject for the sake of clarification: “Wait, are you talking about your human child or your dog child?” Take for example this recent letter from a reader: “My puppy is very possessive of me. I am the primary parent. I also have two other dogs, and anytime they come near me, he runs over, jumps on me and barks at them until they leave. This also is starting to apply to people: My husband can’t come near me, and he recently nipped at my 3-year-old niece. I want to break him of this jealous behavior but don’t know how. My husband says to smack him, but doesn’t that just compound the issue? Other than this, he is a very good boy and an absolute joy to have around.” Oh, maternal love! Its blindness knows no bounds. If we took a poll and aimed it at the “parents” of aggressive dogs, asking why they live with a dangerous dog, the results would make for a hearty denial soup: -- He doesn’t mean it. -- We shouldn’t disturb him. -- He doesn’t do it all the time. -- He was provoked. And the knee-jerk reaction when faced with a shy, fearful or aggressive dog is: Abuse! This dog’s been abused! Sadly, that is sometimes true. But personality traits are sown in a number of ways, many having nothing to do with abuse. Improper socialization or a lack thereof, defective genetics and even simply being the runt of a litter can tip a dog’s personality toward the timid end of the spectrum. Questions from Young Widows Last week, I answered questions about Social Security widow’s benefits. But I ran out of column space before I ran out of questions to answer. So, this week, more questions and answers about widows. Last week’s questions were mostly from older women in their 70s and 80s. Today’s questions come from younger widows.

Q: My husband recently died at age 45. I am also 45. We have three children, ages 11, 14 and 16. I called the Social Security office to file for benefits for the kids. But I got all confused when the agent started talking about what he called “mother’s benefits” and maximum family benefits and benefits stopping at age 16. I thought the kids get checks until they are 18. Can you help me understand what is going on? A: I’d be happy to help. And you’ll see it’s actually not going to be all that complicated. Each child is technically due an amount equal to 75% of your husband’s basic Social Security benefit. But there is a rule that sets a maximum amount that can be paid to a family getting survivor benefits. The formula for determining the exact maximum amount can get a little messy. But it usually comes out to around 180% of your husband’s basic benefit. To explain further, let’s use an example. Let’s say your husband’s basic benefit rate is $2,800. Again, each child is technically due 75% of that, or $2,100. That would come out to a total of $6,300. But the maximum amount that can be paid to your family is 180% of $2,800, or $5,040. So, each child will get one-third of that, or $1,680. ($1,680 times 3 equals $5,040.) If you were not working, you would also technically be due a widow’s benefit. (The term the Social Security Administration uses to refer to benefits for a young widow with children is “mother’s benefits.”) So, you could apply for mother’s benefits and get added to the beneficiary rolls. But right now, it wouldn’t make any sense because your family is already getting the maximum amount possible, or $5,040. Or to put that another way, if you were also getting benefits, your Social Security pie would just be split four ways instead of three. In other words, you’d get four checks at $1,260 each per month instead of three checks at $1,680 each per month. When your oldest child is no longer eligible for benefits, then it would make sense for you to apply for mother’s benefits. That’s because then you’d be down to two kids each due the 75% rate, or $2,100 per child, for a total of $4,200. And with a family maximum of $5,040, that leaves $840 per month that could be paid to you. Each child is due benefits until he or she reaches age 18, although benefits can continue until age 19 if they are still in high school. The age 16 rule you heard about is the cutoff age for mother’s benefits. Or to put that more precisely, you are due mother’s benefits until your youngest child turns 16 (although the child continues to get benefits until age 18).

efits for myself and for our two kids, who are now grown and married themselves. Will the benefits I got way back then reduce what I am now due in widow’s benefits?

A:

No. The “mother’s benefits” you received years ago have no effect on what you now might possibly be due in widow’s benefits. To understand what you might be due, read the answer to the next question.

Q: I will be 60 next month and I plan to retire then. My husband died about 10 years ago. What choices do I have with respect to my own Social Security benefits and my widow’s benefits? A:

Q: I have an old cookbook, and I would like to know if it is worth anything. The title is “The Boston Cooking-School Cookbook” by Fannie Merritt Farmer. Little, Brown and Co. in Boston published it in 1921. It has some handwritten notes and recipes inside the cover and several pages of advertising of the day. The overall condition is good.

Seeing your “Antique or Junque” column in our local Tidbits paper prompted me to send you the enclosed question and photo. This is a photo of an antique secretar y that has been in my family for generations. In 1855, one of my ancestors commissioned it to be made by a professional cabinetmaker from Chittenango, N.Y. It is made of black walnut and is in excellent condition. The fruit shaped pulls on the drawers are hand car ved, and the glass in the arched doors is original to the piece. My secretar y is a family treasure, and I would appreciate you giving me your opinion of its value and histor y.

Its average life span in the wild is up to 15 years. • The world’s tiniest frog is about the size of a common housefly. This miniature creature lives among decomposing leaf litter in the rain forests of Papua New Guinea.

TOAD ABUSE

• African clawed toads can grow to be very large, sometimes as big as a dinner plate. Its name is derived from the three short claws on each hind foot, which it uses to tear apart its food. They were imported into Australia from their native Central America to control the ubiquitous cane beetle that was destroying the sugar cane crops. However, scientists failed to note that while the beetle is a diurnal creature, active only during daylight hours, the toad is nocturnal and feeds only at night. Once established, the predatory cane toads soon took over much of Australia, introducing new problems. • The cane toad wards off predators by secreting a toxic goo from glands in its back. The poison contains a chemical called bufotenine, which affects the nervous system. While looking for a cure for mental disorders, scientists decided to make the most of the situation, so they solicited a group of volunteer prisoners willing to undergo experimental testing. When injected with the compound the subjects experienced a variety of reactions including hallucinations, nausea, and chest discomfort. • The discovery then focused attention on the cane toad as a hallucinatory agent, despite its having been outlawed. Cases of toad abuse popped up, prompting headlines such as “How low will people stoop to get high?” and “Toads take a licking from desperate druggies.” Several people have died after licking toads on a dare. Reportedly, some dogs in Australia are addicted to getting high on toads. □

Decades ago, Ben Hogan wrote about swing planes in the golf swing and related one of them to the shoulders. He felt like a plane of glass went through his neck down to the ball, and his shoulders would turn on that plane. While it’s a powerful image, it’s not a correct plane of movement for the shoulders.

When bent over with any club in hand, the body will turn so that the shoulders will turn on a slightly down tilted plane. This plane would bottom out ten to twelve feet in front of you. Try taking your golf posture with arms outstretched, then attempt to coil your body like the backswing. Your arms and shoulders would be tilted downward.
