• Yet the drama wasn’t over. One of Andromeda’s former suitors, Phineus, showed up at the wedding, claiming to be the only one who had the right to marry the princess. A fight ensued with Perseus greatly outnumbered. His secret weapon to defeat Phineus and his gang was the head of Medusa, a mythological gorgon with the ability to turn spectators to stone. The opponents were defeated, but unfortunately, the king and queen failed to look away from Medusa’s head in time, and met their end. Cassiopeia remains on her throne, forever combing her hair.

by Mary Hunt By Lucie Winborne
* “White noise” is so named because, just as the color white is a mixture of many different shades at different ratios, it’s a combination of all sound frequencies at once. * Some of the first soccer balls were made of clothing filled with rubble. * A young Bangladeshi woman with two uteruses gave birth to twins less than a month after having a son. * “Jazz on bones” or “Ribs” were bootleg vinyl recordings made from old X-rays with holes burned in the middle from cigarettes, used in the ‘50s and ‘60s to smuggle banned music into the Soviet Union. * A vending machine offering live crabs debuted in 2010 in Nanjing, China, with sales of around 200 per day and a promised refund of three live crabs for any dead one dispensed. * While enough was known about Halley’s Comet in 1910 to predict its arrival, rumors about its dangers were so extensive that some people bought comet umbrellas and anti-comet pills in an attempt to protect themselves from it. * Between 2006 and 2007, Poland’s prime minister and president were identical twin brothers, making them the first siblings in history to hold those titles simultaneously. * Ever wonder why sneezes frequently occur in threes? The first loosens the irritant. The second propels it to the front of your nose, and the third expels it. Problem solved!
Where to Find Basic Essentials When the Shelves are Empty Everyday As the disruption to U.S. food supply chains continues to play out in grocery stores CHEAPSKATE and supermarkets, our best proactive move is ®
by Mary to know where and Hunt how to find basic essentials when prices skyrocket or shelves are empty. Good news! Finding the essentials you need may not require you to stand in long lines or spend hours clicking through Amazon search results only to be disappointed over and again. Today, I have alternatives for you to consider, plus options for where to find the essentials you need.
MEAT, POULTRY While we’re being told there’s no shortage of food in the U.S., for whatever reason, wide selections of fresh meat and poultry have already pretty much disappeared. And when found, you’ll discover shockingly high prices, at least for now. Reasonable alternatives for fresh meat and poultry are canned options that are just as nutritious such as tuna, albacore, salmon, chicken, corned beef and Spam! And don’t forget the frozen food aisle, where meat, seafood and poultry seem to be more plentiful. Another option is to consider this challenge the perfect opportunity to try out more meatless meals built around eggs, cheese and other nonmeat protein.

FLOUR While supermarket baking shelves continue to be cleaned out, online sources like King Arthur Flour (shop.kingarthurbaking.com) and Bob’s Red Mill (bobsredmill.com) are fairly well-stocked; however, that changes day by day. Keep checking. Webstaurant (webstaurantstore.com) is another online resource for flour. Just know you’ll be dealing with professional baker quantities in 25-pound or even 50-pound bags. An easy solution there is for family and friends to go in together on those large quantities. Another option for flour is to call a local bakery. One reader reports that she called a local bakery in her city to inquire if they might be willing to sell flour. The answer was a resounding “yes!” She picked up 25 pounds for just $18 and got to support a local business at the same time.
YEAST Can’t find yeast anywhere to save your soul? I know the feeling. But good news! You can make it yourself using just two ingredients: flour and water. No joke! In just five to seven days, you will have a beautiful sourdough starter (yeast) made from scratch. This is so amazing. Look for complete step-by-step instructions at TheKitchn.com for how to start, feed and bake fabulous sourdough bread using your homemade yeast. TOILET PAPER Should we face shortages of toilet paper, and you absolutely cannot find toilet paper locally at Walmart, Target, supermarkets, Costco or Sam’s Club, go online and search under janitorial suppliers. Also, check out online wholesale suppliers Clean It Supply and Total Restroom, where you’ll find those jumbo-sized, two-ply rolls you’d usually find in public restroom stalls in stock, at least today. It’s nice if you’re in a pinch. ISOPROPYL (RUBBING) ALCOHOL While it appears that the isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol shortages are behind us (for now), we need to know how to respond and react should that problem reappear. While I don’t know how to make it myself, I have an alternative for you to consider -- and please consider this very carefully. It is a little odd, but a possible substitute, nonetheless. Denatured alcohol, available online and also in the paint aisle of home improvement stores like Home Depot, might be a good alternative for making disinfecting wipes and homemade hand sanitizer. I say “might be” because I’m going to insist that you research this and come to your own conclusion. Start here. The bottom line is that isopropyl alcohol and denatured alcohol have much the same disinfecting properties, albeit with different chemical makeups. Denatured alcohol is stronger and best diluted with water. Denatured alcohol has a stronger odor than rubbing alcohol, and it is readily available, usually by the gallon. Both types of alcohol are flammable, so don’t be surprised by that. Also, both types are not to be ingested! *** Altering our shopping habits in order to get what we need has been quite a wake-up call, hasn’t it? The change has been inconvenient, to say the least. But it continues to lead us to understand our food supply system. And look how creative we’ve become in finding what we need! • Can you hear me now? Those five words turned Paul Marcarelli into a very recognizable personage known as The Verizon Wireless Guy, a role he held from 2002 to 2011. He’d already appeared in a number of ads for Old Navy, Merrill Lynch, Heineken, and several others. When Verizon decided to pursue a different advertising path in 2011, Marcarelli was relieved of his “Test Guy” duties. He later moved on to the rival Sprint Cellular as a spokesman in 2016, a company that has since merged with T-Mobile. He continues to wear his own personal horn-rimmed glasses in the ads.
• You’re probably not familiar with the name 1/3 pg. column John Gilchrist, but chances are you’ll recognize May 8, 2022 Vol. 18 - No. 19 Mikey from the Life cereal commercials, which first aired in 1972. When two brothers refused to try out the new breakfast cereal, they exclaimed, “Let’s get Mikey! He hates everything!” But to their surprise, they excaimed, “He likes it! Hey, Mikey!”

Important Considerations Before Choosing Solar Q: My electric bill this month was huge! I’m finally ready to look at solar. What is my first step? A: It’s a fact – those living in the Coachella Valley in Southern California Edison territory have some of the highest residential electric rates in the entire country. And with the need to stay cool in the summer, some of the highest bills as well. Depending on the size of your average bill, solar can save you anywhere from 25 – 45% off that average cost.

• At 128 years old, the Michelin Man is one of the world’s most iconic trademarks, a symbol of the tire company since 1894. The Man’s name is Bibendum and has maintained his original white color all these years, even though carbon was added to the tires’ rubber formula in 1912, changing them from their original white to black. The name Bibendum translates from the Latin, meaning “to drink.” Michelin’s London headquarters from 1911 to 1985 now houses the Bibendum Restaurant and Oyster Bar.

In addition, new characters will be introduced, including Robert Englund as Victor Creel and Jamie Campbell Bower as Peter Ballard. But have no fear, the rest of the boys will still be at the forefront of the mystery back in the town of Hawkins. Duffer stated at a television panel that he chose the West Coast because he always wanted an

There seems to be some general confusion about what constitutes aggression. What are the signs? What does dog aggression look like? I spoke with a woman recently who said her dog is angry. How do you know he’s angry, I asked. “He growls and barks at other people and dogs,” she said. “Sounds aggressive to me.” “No,” she said. “He’s angry.” What does aggression look like? It looks like anger. It looks like Cujo. It looks like bared teeth and frothing at the mouth. But it also looks like tension -- straight tail, ears up, wide eyes, a stiffening of the body and face, a gradual lifting of the snout in response to direct eye contact. What does aggression sound like? It sounds like growling -- anything from a low rumble to a threatening, lip-curling snarl. Barking can be a sign of aggression, too, although dogs use their bark to communicate in ways that have nothing to do with aggression. However, barking in tandem with any of the above is safe to define as aggression. The following letter from a reader demonstrates the signs and progression of aggression left unchecked: “We have a serious issue with our sweet girl, ‘Suki.’ She shows severe fear aggression with certain people. It used to be a little low growl, which progressed to lunging with some backtracking. Now it is full-on, in-your-face snarling, barking and even jumping on or at certain people if we don’t grab her in time. “Suki does very well on walks, walking right by people and dogs, often looking at them but quickly ignoring them. It’s only if they approach, stop and stare directly at her that she gets stressed out. She also frequently startles on walks and is often looking behind her even if no one is there. “It is to the point that even my brother

YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau
Angry Al and Me I get lots of emails from my readers. Most are from nice people who have questions about their particular Social Security situation. I like responding to these people and helping them out. Then there are those guys (and it’s almost always guys) who rant and rave and gripe and groan about some perceived injustice involving Social Security. Their emails are long, usually filled with lots of foul language, capital letters, exclamation points and bold text. I can just imagine the venom spewing from their angry body down to their fingertips and then onto the keyboard as they write these missives. Even though I know they are just venting, I usually like to give them the courtesy of a reply. I figure if I can help them understand the program, it might help them see the light and change their minds about whatever their issue is. But that doesn’t always work. Here is an email exchange I had with one irate guy recently. I’ll call him Angry Al. (By the way, I cleaned up his remarks and deleted all scatological references!) Angr y Al: “People who work for Social Security, just like all government employees, are incompetent fools who couldn’t get a real job in the private sector. I have a badly torn tendon in my arm. I applied for Social Security disability benefits, and they told me I wasn’t eligible.” (His rant went on for several more paragraphs, but this was the gist of his complaints.) Columnist Tom: “I certainly don’t agree with your assessment of government employees. But I’ll stick to the facts of your case. I obviously don’t know everything about your situation. But I can tell you this: The law says that to get disability benefits, you must have a physical or mental impairment that is so severe that it will keep you from doing any kind of job for at least a year. Or it must be a condition that is terminal. I just don’t think a torn tendon is a severe enough impairment to qualify for disability benefits.” Angr y Al: “It had nothing to do with my tendon. They told me I didn’t have enough Social Security quarters. How can that be? Except for some recent years of unemployment, I’ve been working all my life.” Columnist Tom: “OK, now I think I understand why your disability claim was denied. The law says that to qualify for disability benefits, you must have worked and paid Social Security taxes in five out of the last 10 years. So, I’m guessing you simply didn’t meet that insured status requirement.” Angr y Al: “Well, now I can tell you’re just as dumb as the current batch of Social Security idiots. If I’m not insured, then how come they just told me that I can file for reduced retirement benefits when I turn 62 later this year?” Columnist Tom: “That’s because there are different insured status rules for retirement benefits. The ‘recent work’ rules -- that ‘five out of
Page 11
Tidbits of Coachella Valley
the last 10’ stuff -- doesn’t apply to retirement benefits. So even though you are not eligible for disability benefits, you will be able to get retirement benefits when you turn 62.” Angr y Al: “Well, I know lots of people who are getting disability benefits from Social Security, and they never paid a dime into the system.” Columnist Tom: “You’re just plain wrong about that. There is nobody getting a disability benefit from Social Security who hasn’t worked and paid Social Security taxes, usually for a minimum of 10 years, or is a dependent of someone who has worked and paid taxes. You might be confusing Social Security disability benefits with Supplemental Security Income disability benefits. SSI is a federal welfare program that pays a small monthly stipend to poor people who are over age 65 or who are disabled. You don’t have to work and pay Social Security taxes to qualify for SSI.” Angr y Al: “Don’t lecture me about government programs. We all know there are lots of people who sneak across the border then walk into a Social Security office and get all kinds of government benefits!” Columnist Tom: “Again, you’re just plain wrong about that. To get any kind of Social Security or Supplemental Security Income benefits, you must either be a U.S. citizen, or you must be living in this country legally.” Angr y Al: “Well, I’ll tell you this. If I were a different color, I’d have been approved for Social Security disability benefits a long time ago!” Columnist Tom: “Well, speaking of color, your true colors are now starting to show. You sound like just another angry old white guy who thinks the country is out to get him. What a shame!”
tr y today. Ever ything is stacked against us.” Columnist Tom: “I’m a middle-class white male. And I’ve got to say that for all my life, things have been stacked pretty heavily in my favor. But let’s forget about all this political stuff for now and get back to your original Social Security complaint. You were upset because your claim for Social Security disability benefits was denied. I explained to you that the law says you must have worked and paid Social Security taxes in five out of the last 10 years in order to get disability benefits. It sounds like you don’t meet that legal requirement. There are no conspiracies. There are no incompetent government representatives. There is no discrimination against middle-class white males. You just do not meet that work requirement of the law. It really is as simple as that.” Angr y Al: “!@#$ you!” *** So, dear readers, welcome to my life. I tell you, sometimes it just doesn’t pay to get out of bed in the morning and be a columnist who is trying to help people understand the Social Security program. And let me point out that because of the volume of emails I get from my readers, I usually simply don’t have the time to get into long drawnout exchanges with readers. But in this case, I was really hoping I could get Angry Al to understand what was going on with his claim for disability benefits. Foolish me! * * * If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has a book with all the answers. It’s called “Social Security: Simple and Smart.” You can find the book at www.creators.com/books, or look for it on Amazon or other book outlets. year. Medicare Part B will only cover this drug if your husband is enrolled in a special clinical trial. -- by Jim Miller
How Medicare Covers Alzheimer's Disease DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: What exactly does Medicare cover when it comes to Alzheimer's disease? My husband was recently diagnosed with early-stage Alzheimer's, and we would like to find out what is covered and what is not. -- Planning Ahead Dear Planning: I'm so sorry to hear about your husband's diagnosis, but you'll be happy to know that most medical costs to treat beneficiaries with Alzheimer's disease are covered by Medicare. But unfortunately, long-term custodial care costs that most patients eventually need are not. Here's a breakdown of what Medicare does and doesn't cover when it comes to Alzheimer's disease, along with some tips that can help you plan ahead.
Long-term custodial care: It's important to understand that original Medicare does not cover long-term custodial care. This includes nursing home care, the costs of assisted living facilities and adult day care. Medicare does, however, pay for some shorter-term nursing home care, but only up to 100 days following a three-day inpatient hospital stay. Hiring home help for bathing, toileting and dressing (this is known as custodial care) is not covered by Medicare either unless your husband is also receiving skillednursing care or physical or occupational therapy.
Other Insurance and Assistance: If your husband is enrolled in original Medicare and he doesn't have a supplemental insurance (Medigap) policy, you should consider getting him one. A Medigap plan will help pay for things that aren't covered by Medicare like copayments, coinsurance and deductibles. To search for plans in your area, go to Medicare.gov/plan-compare and click on 'Medigap policy only.' Or, if you're enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan (like an HMO or PPO), his plan must provide him at least the same coverage as original Medicare does. Some advantage plans may also offer additional coverage for home care services.
If you can't afford your Medicare outof-pocket costs or need help with medicaTo help with these costs, you may tion expenses, there are Medicare Savings want to look into getting a long-term care insurance policy or short-term care plan (see Programs and the Extra Help program that provide financial assistance for medications. aaltci.org/stc) if possible, or if your income To learn more, see APRIL 26 Medicare.gov/yourand assets are very limited, you may qualify MON., medicare-costs/get-help-paying-costs. for Medicaid. been in my family for several generations, and I would like to know more about it. My mother always told me it was valuable and should be passed down in the family to the next generation. The vase is frosted, stands 9 inches tall and has panels of women standing above masks. The panels of women are all in different poses and they alternate with raised oval shapes. It is in mint condition. Also included with the mark is the word “France.”

Swirl Pottery Turned on Potter’s Wheel Q:
Please look at the photo of my Arkansas potter y and tell me if it is still being produced. The potter y is decorated with variegated colors with a matte finish. Can you tell me how they achieved the dripping process? Also, I would appreciate any other information on its age, maker and value.
Rene Lalique created glassware in Paris, France, from the 1890s to 1945.
A: Your vase was made by Rene Lalique.
He was an exceptional glassmaker in Paris, France, from the 1890s to 1945. His glasshouse made gorgeous pieces of art glass that included vases, figures, stemware, chandeliers, and inkwells. He also created perfume bottles for Guerlain, Coty and Worth. “France” was included with his marks from 1926 to 1945. The name of the design of your vase is “Six Figures et Masques.” Your circa 1926 vase would probably fetch $7,000 and up in antiques shops, and possibly more at auction.
Niloak Pottery Co. was located in Benton, Ark.
A: Judging from your photo and information, your pottery vases are examples of Niloak Pottery Co. It was founded by Charles Dean Hyten and located in Benton, Ark., from 1909 to 1947. They began by making crocks, jugs and churns. When demand for utilitarian ware waned, they introduced their art pottery line. Artificially coloring the clay and turning it on the potter’s wheel made pieces with a marbleized or swirled appearance. Niloak is the word kaolin spelled backwards. Kaolin is a type of high quality clay, and there was an abundance of clay in the Benton area. Hyten obtained a patent on his swirled technique in 1925. Your pottery is known as “Swirl” and “Missionware.” Some pieces were marked and others had only a paper label. Camark Pottery and Ouachita Pottery were two other famous potteries located in Arkansas. Your collection of pottery was made circa 1925. Prices vary from $100 for small pieces to over $500 for large pieces. *** Q: I have sent a drawing FILLER PAGE 2 of the mark that is on an antique glass vase. The vase has 2Q08 - WEEK 19 MAY 4 - MAY 10

Colombian coffee farmer, Carlos Sanchez, who was also an accomplished artist. Sanchez held the Valdez role until 2006, when he retired and actor Carlos Casteneda took over the part. • Speaking of coffee, do you remember the fictional Scandinavian housewife, Mrs. Olson, who was the expert on the perfect cup of coffee? Actress Virginia Christine boasted about “mountain-grown coffee” because “it's the richest kind!” She wasn’t just a coffee peddler – she had roles in close to 60 movies and scores of television appearances. The actress’ hometown of Stanton, Iowa honored her by building the community’s water tower in the shape of a giant coffee pot. • The Marlboro Man became a popular fixture in ads for the cigarette brand beginning in 1954. Marlboro's goal was to project a rugged cowboy image that embodied the sense of masculinity, adventure and physical strength that men viewing the ads wanted for themselves. The first Man was William Thourlby, a model who happened to be a nonsmoker and pretended to do cowboy tasks in the TV commercials. But the ad agency didn’t feel he was authentic or “rugged” enough, so they went instead after authentic rodeo cowboys and ranch hands. • Over the years the part was played by six other men who fit the masculine role that Marlboro wanted to project. The ad campaign was a huge success, increasing sales by $15 billion a mere three years after the Marlboro Man first appeared in commercials. It ran until the federal ban on tobacco advertising went into effect in 1971. □ (Related stories on page 5).

Slap Over the Slice Getting rid of that nasty slice should be the goal of millions of golfers worldwide. Simply stated, one cannot truly enjoy the benefits of advanced golf without first beating that nagging slice. While there are dozens of tips to help cure a slice causing swing, try rehearsing this simple “slap over” drill every time you play, practice, or have time in the backyard. The basic concept is to take your golf address position without a club, allowing the hands to be facing palms together. Leave the left arm and hand in place while making a half backswing motion. The goal is to move forward in attempt to slap the left hand and cause it to turn over (palm up). The follow through should be short to see how the forearms cross over as you’re still in the golf posture. By “slapping over” the hands and arms, you’re rehearsing the needed action for the swing to create straighter shots. Try hitting shots on ADVERTISING PROOF the range after rehearsing the slap over several before each Finaltimes Changes DUE:swing. 5:00
