Later, in 1896, it was determined that the 1.5 mile distance was too long for three-year-old horses to run that early in the spring, and the track length was shortened by a quarter of a mile. • When race fans showed up for the 1895 event, they

KENTUCKY DERBY (from page one) were met by a brand-new grandstand featuring the Twin Spires. A 24-year-old draftsman designed the Spires, which have become iconic symbols to Derby enthusiasts worldwide. • At a party hosted by a socialite following the 1883 Derby, each of the ladies attending was presented with a fresh rose. Track founder Meriwether Lewis Clark was also in attendance and liked the idea of associating roses with the Derby event. He later declared that henceforth the rose would be the race’s official flower. • But it wasn’t until 1896 that a bouquet of pink and white roses was first presented to the Derby winner, and it was 1932 before the garland of roses that we see today was introduced. • The blanket of roses bestowed upon the owner of the winning horse is composed of more than 500 red roses sewn onto a green satin matrix. The jockey also receives 60 long-stemmed roses wrapped in 10 yards of ribbon. Owners frequently have the garland of roses freezedried to preserve it, and some even have a flower dipped in silver in commemoration of the win. The term “Run for the Roses” was coined by a sports columnist in 1925. • The two-minute mark has only been broken three times in Derby history, the first time in 1973 by the famed Secretariat. Nicknamed “Big Red,” the chestnut finished the course in 1:59.40, a record that still holds today
Page 3
• The 1944 Derby winner was named Pensive and the victor in 1949 was Ponder. What was unusual about these two steeds? Pensive was the sire of Ponder and both horses won by Ka the Derby with the exact same time, 2:04.20. Ponder went on to sire the 1956 Derby winner, 1. Wh Needles.
as the fastest time ever. The second horse to finish in under two minutes was just a length and a half behind Secretariat. Sham, who was Secretariat’s dark brown half-cousin, had struck his mouth on the starting gate and knocked out a tooth. Although he bled severely throughout the race, Sham came in about onefifth of a second behind the winner. The Derby was without an under-two-minute winner until 2001 when Monarchos finished in 1:59.97.

thoroughbreds to Maryland’s Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes in New York. Although it wasn’t officially called the “Triple Crown” until 1930, the first winner of all three races was in 1919, a chestnut named Sir Barton. There have only been 11 Triple Crown winners, including Secretariat, who took the prize after a 25-year drought, setting records in all three races. There were back-to-back Triple Crown winners in 1977 (Seattle Slew) and Affirmed in 1978. There has been none since.

• As a small youth, rejection for a spot on the baseball team pushed the young Arcaro to excel in a different area. He stood just 5’2” when fully grown. Someone suggested that he might make a good jockey. The rest is history. • At the 1959 Belmont Stakes, Arcaro seemed destined for his 7th win, but his horse fell and he was thrown into a small pond and was narrowly saved from drowning. Riding helmets had only recently been introduced to the sport and Arcaro claimed his had saved his life. His lifetime record was 4,779 wins. • Bill Hartack won his first Kentucky Derby in 1957 at age 24. He was favored to win the next year, but just two weeks before the Derby, he broke his leg and another jockey rode the horse Tim Tam, who won the race. Hartack was the nation’s leading jockey four different times, and was the first to attain $3 million purse winnings in a year. • Standing just 4’11” (1.5m) tall and weight 96 lbs. (43.5 kg), Willie Shoemaker was just 17 when he rode a horse in a race for the first time. Although he finished fifth in that first race, by his third race, he was in the winner’s circle. By week two, he had won seven races. He won his first Kentucky Derby in 1955 at age 23, and his second four years later. • It would be six years before his next Churchill Downs victory, but Willie wasn’t finished yet. Twenty-one years later in 1986, Shoemaker

Brooke most recently starred in the Lifetime movie “A Sister’s Revenge” (which premiered on April 26, and will re-air periodically in the next few weeks; check your local listings). Brooke also is excited about her new pilot series for the Game Show Network. When Brooke and I spoke recently, she told me all about her new projects: “I enjoy acting because you get to dip your toe into the fantasy of a role, like Suzanne in ‘A Sister’s Revenge.’ And I enjoy the hosting because I love people, and that’s a natural kind of medium for me Brooke Burns that I enjoy as well. It’s never boring. “I just shot a pilot called ‘Where Have You Been All My Life?’ It’s kind of a 2013 version of ‘The Dating Game.’ It is super fun, and we’re using a lot of social media as research, and using it in an onscreen format. It’s been a blast.” ***

H.L. Mencken said, “The most costly of all follies is to believe passionately in the palpably not true. It is the chief occupation of mankind.” The following letter from a reader demonstrates that it is certainly the chief occupation of those who champion the companionship of a particular canine at any cost. We recently got an 8-month-old yellow lab from a family with three small children. The lady said the dog could be aggressive and had nipped at her 2-yearold. She is a very nervous puppy -- jumps at the slightest movement or noise. She also jumps and twitches when she sleeps. We have experienced her aggression now, and it is quite scary. The second morning we had her, something spooked her and she would not let us near our truck. The doors were all open, and she sat in the driver’s seat growling and showing her teeth. I got a treat and put it on the ground near us. When I said “release,” she got out, snatched the treat and jumped right back in. She calmed down, but was nervous all day after that. She has showed her teeth a few times, and we’re not sure how to handle it. I read that it isn’t always good to approach or discipline her when she is showing her teeth and growling, because it could initiate an attack. I know that she is scared and confused. Within one week, she stayed in four different houses, with all new people. We’ve had her for a week, and we’d love to keep her. We have no children, but we have nieces and nephews around often. We need to break her of these aggressive behaviors, or we will not be able to run the risk of her hurting a child. She is a good dog -- excellent when playing fetch, gives up the ball or toy every time. However, she gets aggressive with some of her toys when indoors. We gave her a pig’s ear last night, and she got extremely aggressive. Every time we moved, she growled and showed her teeth -- even when we were nowhere near her. She came out of it, but again she was nervous for the rest of the night. This makes as much sense as buying a car with no brakes because you like the ashtray and don’t even smoke. With all the great dogs in shelters that need homes, why insist on the one you know is aggressive? It is one thing to root for the underdog and quite another to invite the snarling underdog to CASEY’S CORNER: Turn to page 10

Skin Cancer Preventable With Proper Sunscreen I believe that too much sun exposure accounts for the increasing incidence of malignant melanoma. While I was a teenager, not a summer went by without at least one severe and painful sunburn, which significantly increased my risk of melanoma, the most dangerous of all skin cancers. Fortunately, I have been spared, but my sister and mother were not so lucky. Each had a change in a mole that was recognized early enough to only require removal. The volume of ozone in Earth’s stratosphere -- the ozone layer -- appears to be declining every year. Meanwhile, the incidence of melanoma has increased. From 1970 to 2009, melanomas increased by 800 percent in women and 400 percent in men. The American Cancer Society estimates that 76,690 new cases of invasive melanoma will be diagnosed in 2013 and 9,480 people will die of the disease. The National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health, estimates that Americans developed more than 2 million new cases of non-melanoma skin cancer in 2012 (basal cell and squamous cell cancers), but these cancers caused fewer than 1,000 deaths. By comparison, the institute estimates that in 2013, melanoma will be diagnosed in 76,690 Americans and it will cause 9,480 deaths. Despite accounting for only 5 percent of all skin cancers, this disease causes more than 90 percent of skin cancer deaths. Although it seems unlikely, of the seven most common cancers in the United States, melanoma is the only one whose incidence is increasing. Between 2000 and 2009, incidence climbed 1.9 percent annually. New evidence published in the journal Pediatrics suggests that rates of melanoma are significantly increasing in children. If melanoma is diagnosed when limited to the most superficial layers of the skin, the cure rate is 98 percent. If, however, it has spread to distant organs, the chance of surviving more than five years after diagnosis is only 15 percent. The lighter the skin and the more frequent the sunburn, the greater the risk of melanoma. Anyone at high risk must be vigilant and have their skin examined by a physician frequently. A melanoma should be considered if a change in the size, shape or color of a mole has occurred or if a mole is more than one color, has irregular margins or starts bleeding or forms an ulcer. A newly pigmented spot or one under the nails, between the toes or on the genitalia is suspicious and

YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau
Senior Citizens and Social Security Disability It must be a sign of the times, but almost every single day I get emails from seniors asking if they might be eligible for Social Security disability benefits. Baby boomers (like me) aren’t just getting old; some of us are also getting frail. Our bodies are breaking down at a record pace! I’m probably a pretty good example. After a lifetime of essentially good health (I was once honored for using the fewest sick leave days by my former employer), in the past year or so, I’ve had to deal with issues as severe as blood clots and as minor as a bum knee. I probably could file for Social Security disability benefits and have my claim approved. But frankly, I just don’t have the gumption to do so. I’m content with my retirement benefits. But again, judging from my emails, many seniors and near seniors are interested in filing for Social Security disability. I’ll offer some tips on how to go about doing that in a minute. But first, here are some ground rules: If you are 66 or older, forget about it. Once you reach that age, disability benefits are no longer payable. Or to put that another way, a retirement benefit pays the same rate as a disability benefit for people over age 66. If you are under age 66 and have never filed for any kind of Social Security, then you are ahead to file for Social Security disability. If you are over 62, the Social Security people will probably suggest you file for retirement and disability benefits at the same time. They can start your retirement payments right away. Then if your disability claim is eventually approved, they will switch you to the higher disability rate. But if you are between age 62 and 66 and are already getting Social Security retirement benefits, you may or may not be eligible for disability payments. The closer you are to 66, the less likely you are to be eligible for such benefits. That’s because your disability rate (normally equal to your full age 66 retirement benefit) must be reduced for every month you’ve already received a Social Security retirement check. And you will eventually reach a point where you simply gain nothing by filing for Social Security disability. Here is a quick example of that. Sam filed for retirement benefits at age 62. His benefit was reduced roughly one-half of one percent for each month he was under 66. He is getting 75 percent of his full age 66 retirement rate. At 65, he had a heart attack. If he files for disability benefits and if his claim is approved, his regular disability rate, again equal to his full age 66 benefit, must be reduced by about one-half of one percent for each month he’s received a retirement benefit. At age 65, he’s already
Page 11
received 36 retirement checks, so his disability rate must be cut by about 18 percent. So instead of a 100 percent disability rate, he’d get about 82 percent. Sam would have to decide if it is worth all the hassle of filing for disability just to get bumped up from his current 75 percent rate to 82 percent. And speaking of “all the hassle,” here is a quick rundown of the Social Security disability application process. First, you will fill out a bunch of papers. The primary one is a form that asks you to describe your disability and how it prevents you from working. That latter point is the key. You don’t get disability benefits simply because you have some kind of physical or mental impairment. You get disability benefits because you have a physical or mental impairment that keeps you from working. So you must describe in detail how your disability prevents you from doing your job. That same form also asks you to list your medical providers. The government can’t make a decision about your case without having the evidence to back up your claim. So make sure you thoroughly list the names, addresses, phone numbers and any other contact information you have for every doctor, hospital, clinic or other medical professional from whom you’ve received treatment. There is a pretty good chance you will be asked to go to a “Social Security doctor” for additional evaluation. Make sure you don’t miss that appointment. Your disability claim will usually take about three months to process. If it’s approved, you’ll start getting disability checks six months after they say your disability began. (That six-month waiting period is built into the law.) If your claim is denied, you will have to decide if it is worth it to appeal that decision. You may figure (as I have) that you are simply ahead to stick with your retirement benefits.
