Dinner Parties: (from page one) that none of the tableware was lost. MEMORABLE DISASTERS

• Legend has it that while French playwright Victorian Sardou attended a formal dinner party one evening, he triggered a disastrous chain of events when he accidentally bumped over his wine glass. The lady seated next to him quickly poured salt on the spill to prevent a stain. The supersitious Sardou then tossed some salt over his left shoulder to ward off bad luck, but the waiter standing behind him took most of it in his eye and dropped the platter of roast chicken. The family dog grabbed the chicken and began gulping it so fast that it began to choke on a bone. The owner's son tried to wrestle it out of the dog’s throat, but the panicked animal bit the boy repeatedly and so viciously that he had to have one of his fingers amputated.

An hour after dinner was to be served he had still not arrived and the guests were growing impatient. The anxious hostess nervously phoned his house to inquire of his whereabouts. “I’m sorry,” Bernard said, “but I’m not coming.” “Not coming? Are you ill?” she asked. “No,” he replied. “I’m simply not at all hungry.”

Everyday CHEAPSKATE

By Samantha Weaver

* It was American novelist and activist Anne Lamott who made the following sage observation: “Joy is the best makeup.” * Scottish-American industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie was determined not to get married so long as his mother was alive. He stuck to his decision, too -- the same year that his mother died, Carnegie finally wed at the age of 51. When his daughter was born the following year, Carnegie bestowed his mother’s name on her. * In 2014, it became illegal in Russia to use profanity in the theater, in films and at other cultural events. * Before American music icon Ella Fitzgerald became famous as the First Lady of Song and the Queen of Jazz, she started out -- as so many performers have -- at Harlem’s Apollo Theater. She was 17 years old, and she didn’t intend to sing; she had planned to perform a dance number. Before it was her turn to perform, though, there was a dance act so good that she felt intimidated, so she changed her plan. It was a good idea, evidently -- not only did she win first prize for the night, she went on to take home one of the inaugural Grammy Awards, as well as 12 more over the course of her career. She also was awarded the National Medal of Arts, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the George and Ira Gershwin Award for Lifetime Musical Achievement. Not bad for a would-be dancer.

How to Protect Your Medicare Card -- and What’s So Great About Home Chef Everyday CHEAPSKATE

Dear Mary: You encouraged me to write in with my question, so here it is: On the back of my Medicare card it says, “Carry your card with you when you are away from home.” I am uneasy with that because it has my Social Security number printed right on it. Doesn’t this expose me to identity theft if my wallet or purse were to be lost or stolen? But on the other hand, wouldn’t I need it in my possession in the event that I need emergency medical treatment or go to a doctor appointment? -- Boe

I’m very black-and-white and very structured. I need to let loose a little more, and she’s the same way. She’s a character I haven’t gotten to play yet. She’s very driven and she’s passionate. She is so sweet and she has great storytelling ability. There’s good character development, and you really get to know each of the characters. If you haven’t explored solar yet, what are you waiting for? Your friends and neighbors are saving thousands every month with fixed payments that can be up to 40% less than their former average electric bills with a lease that costs them nothing upfront. Wouldn’t you like to explore that option for yourself? step?

Q: Okay – what’s my first A: Call or email a local company

like Renova that puts quality panels on your roof like SunPower. The company will send out a tech to do measurements on your roof and understand how much, if any, shade there is year round. This, coupled with your past energy bills, will allow them to create a customized proposal for purchasing or leasing. It’s free, and with Renova there’s no pressure to buy, just a desire to answer questions, provide information, and help you decide if solar is right for you.

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

No Bonus for Vets I’m guessing there’s something floating around on the internet giving veterans false hope that they are due some kind of extra Social Security benefits for serving in the military. Vets around the country are marching into their local Social Security office with their DD-214 (military discharge papers) demanding that this hyped up bonus be added to their Social Security checks. Or they are sending me emails asking me to help them get the extra money. As is so often the case with these online rumors, there is a tiny kernel of truth to the story. But then exaggerated claims and false information take over and things get blown way out of proportion. Here are the facts in a nutshell: If you were in the military anytime up until 2001, the government may add a small amount of additional earnings to your Social Security record. And here is the good news: Those earnings are added automatically. There is nothing you need to do to get the extra credits. But here is the bad news: The extra credits are relatively minimal and usually will have little or no impact on the eventual amount of your Social Security check. Now here are the details: If you served on active duty or active duty training in the military service any time after 1956, you paid Social Security taxes on your earnings just like anyone else working at a job covered by Social Security. And since 1988, inactive duty in the armed forces reserves, such as weekend drills, has also been covered by Social Security. That’s the simple part. What leads to all the confusion is that Congress decided to add extra earnings credits to the Social Security records of military personnel. And the amount of those credits varies depending on the time served. If you were in the military between 1957 and 1977, the government adds $300 to your Social Security records for each calendar quarter in which you received active duty basic pay. From 1978 through 2001, the government adds an extra $100 to your Social Security account for each $300 you earned in basic pay, up to a maximum of $1,200 per year. There are times when these extra credits aren’t granted. For example, if you enlisted after Sept. 7, 1980 and didn’t complete your full tour of duty, you won’t get the extra credits. Check with the Social Security Administration for more exceptions. Beginning in 2002, the government stopped adding extra credits to Social Security records for military service. As I said above, if you are due extra credits, you usually don’t need to do anything to get them added to your record. If you served from 1968 through 2001, those credits are automatically added to your Social Security account. If you served from 1957 through 1967, the credits will be added at the time you file for benefits. In some cases, you may be asked to provide your DD-214 (discharge papers) to verify your military service. The story is a little different for older vets. If you served in the armed forces between 1940 and 1956, Social Security taxes were not deducted from your military paychecks. But in most cases, the government did add $160 per month in earnings

There are no big Social ters) to get the extra credits you need. Security bonuses for vets. You don’t need to go to But now, the rules are different. Once you your Social Security office waving your DD-214 make $5,200 any time during a year, you get the and expect to get a big pile of cash. (Although, as I maximum four credits that can be assigned for pointed out above, folks who served between 1957 that year. The law actually says you get one credit and 1967 may need to show their discharge papers for each $1,300 you earn. But no one can earn at the time they file for benefits to get those extra more than four credits each year. earnings added to their Social Security account.) Depending on the kind of job you get, you And finally, it’s important that I repeat this could earn the four credits you need quickly or message: Those extra earnings you get for your slowly. didn’t even ingest much of it. It stays bright-silver, but you probably would not have seen it through the dark coffee. The expert I spoke with was just as concerned about the broken glass you might have ingested. I suspect the symptoms you describe have nothing to do with the mercury. M.D.

Reader Drank Mercury From a Thermometer! DEAR DR. ROACH: You probably have never gotten a question like this. How much mercury is in an old thermometer? A month ago, I wasn’t feeling well, so I took my temperature with an old thermometer that seemed to be taking too long to work. Long story short, I broke it into my hot cup of coffee, which I drank before I realized that I had broken the thermometer. I didn’t finish the whole cup. What happens to mercury when it’s in hot liquid? Does it sink or float? Is it visible? Does it have a taste or smell? What will happen to me? I didn’t call the poison center or my doctor; I was too embarrassed. I did end up being sick for a long time. I had a fever (I got a new thermometer), sore throat, terrible headache that lasted for days, my blood pressure was elevated and I vomited on the fifth day after ingesting the mercury. I don’t know if some of the symptoms were from a reaction to the Nyquil I had taken, which has never bothered me before. Any suggestions? -- Anon.

Even though the news I give you is good, I still would go to your doctor and discuss it. If someone came in to me with these symptoms, I would look for other reasons for them, not mercury. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 68-year-old man with numbness in my hand for the past seven years. A neurologist diagnosed me with carpal tunnel syndrome and prescribed special gloves. I have no hand pain, only numbness when I elevate my arms, which also causes neck and shoulder pain. What can I do to get some relief? -- B.W. ANSWER: Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by compression of the median nerve in the wrist. It may cause numbness and pain in the hands. The pain can travel up the arm, but rarely affects the arm above the elbow, and neck/shoulder pain makes me concerned that the nerve compression causing your hand numbness might be originating in your neck. It is possible you have both carpal tunnel syndrome and a “pinched nerve” in the neck, but compression of the nerve in the neck could cause all the symptoms you are telling me about. A careful exam usually sorts this out, but an MRI may be necessary to confirm.

VA Fraudsters Go Down in Flames Here’s a clue to those who would seek to claim veterans benefits for blindness: Don’t drive yourself to your doctor appointments. That’s just what one veteran in Kansas did. He received monthly benefits (from 2009 to 2016) because he claimed to be blind and needed help with everyday activities, like reading pill bottles and getting to appointments. In October, he was seen being helped out of the car by his wife before a doctor appointment, and she helped escort him inside. Afterward she helped him back to the car. So far, so good ... except that a few blocks away he was seen getting out of the car, swapping seats with his wife and driving off. Subsequent investigation revealed that he drove everywhere and even had a state driver’s license, which did not indicate he even needed glasses. If convicted, the veteran and wife could get five years in prison (and a $250,000 fine) for conspiracy, and 10 years for theft, as well as another $250,000 fine. The total benefits he stole came to $63,000. Not far away, a Missouri man, age 80, was charged with health-care fraud. He ran a medical testing center that, among other services, provided disability exams to veterans to determine their level of impairment and eligibility for benefits. When the center’s doctor left in 2013, another man (age 74) was recruited to do the exams, in violation of the center’s contract with the Department of Veterans Affairs. This second person was a defrocked exphysician who’d lost his license to practice due to an earlier fraud ADVERTISING scheme and drugPROOF distribution charges. Hepatitis C is transmitted only through blood, so anyone who received either a blood transfusion or an organ transplant prior to 1992 is at increased risk too. So are health-care workers exposed to blood, and people who injected drugs through shared needles. The virus can also be spread through microscopic amounts of infected blood that could occur during sex, from sharing a razor or toothbrush, or getting a tattoo or body piercing at an unsterile shop.

The idea of Go Figure! is to arrive at the figures given at the bottom and right-hand columns of the diagram by following the arithmetic signs in the order they are given (that is, from left to right and top to bottom). Use only the numbers below the diagram to complete its blank squares and use each of the nine numbers only once.

Not all health insurance plans, including Medicare Part D plans, cover all prescribed medications for hepatitis C. And due to the expensive nature of these medications, most insurance plans require that you meet several requirements in order to get coverage.

Most hepatitis C infections occurred in the 1970s and 1980s, before there were tests to detect them and before the nation’s blood supply was routinely screened for the virus.

The reason is because baby boomers account for 75 percent of the 3 million or so hepatitis C cases in the U.S. Those that are infected are at very high risk of eventually developing liver cancer, cirrhosis or other fatal liver diseases.

is in mint condition. It has been in our family for a long time; we think our great-grandmother purchased it soon after she was married, around the year 1913. What can you tell us about the maker, vintage and value of our desk?

Porcelain Decorated By Fire-Breathing Dragon Q:

This is a photo of a dragonware cup and saucer that are part of a larger collection. I have a variety of shapes and sizes. Most pieces have a matte gray background and are decorated with dragons in relief. A few have a red-orange background. Could you find information on dragonware and when it was made?

Stickley Brothers introduced the “Quaint” line of furniture in 1902.

A:

L & J.G. Stickley Furniture Co. made your desk. It was founded in 1902 in New York. You have a fine example of its “Quaint Arts and Crafts” line of furniture that was introduced in 1904. It used several types of marks, including brass tags, paper labels and marks burned on. Early “Quaint” furniture can be recognized by straight lines and handwrought copper hardware. By 1914, there was a swing away from the “Arts and Crafts” line to furniture reflecting earlier periods of design. Your desk would probably fetch $1,000 to $1,500 in an antiques shop. * * * Address your questions to Anne McCollam, P. O. Box 247, Notre Dame, IN 46556. Dragonware was made in Japan.

A:

Porcelain dragonware has been made in Japan since the late 1800s. It can be recognized by the mythological fire-breathing dragon in relief that is outlined in white and against a gray background that fades to black, white moriage/dots and blue accents. Some pieces were made with a pink or red-orange background. Examples of dragonware include tea sets, cups, saucers, ashtrays, vases, covered trinket boxes, coffee sets, cream pitchers and sugar bowls. Most pieces were either marked with a paper label or signed in the glaze. There was an increased demand for dragonware in the 1940s and 1950s. The quality of early pieces surpasses that of those made in mid-1900s. A few pieces were made in China. Most pieces can be seen selling from $15 to $50. Your cup and saucer would probably sell in the range of $15 to $20.

Q:

Enclosed is my drawing of the mark that is on our Mission-style oak desk. The mark is a brass tag with a logo on the left side and the words “Grand Rapids, Mi.” at the bottom. The desk stands about 29 inches tall, 48 inches wide and 29 inches deep. At each end is a bookshelf. In the front is a single drawer with a metal pull and wicker panels. The finish is original, and the desk

rather mangey-looking dog. Surprised that they would bring a pet with them to dinner, the man politely said nothing and graciously invited them in for a get-acquainted chat until dinner was ready. • As they sat talking in the living room the host kept glancing a nervous eye at the dog as it trotted freely through the house sniffing his expensive furniture and clumsily bumping things to the floor. Not wanting to embarrass the couple, the man politely held his tongue as the animal continued its snooping. • Soon after the dog had trotted into the kitchen there was a loud crash. When the host jumped to his feet to investigate, he was aghast to see the dog up on the kitchen counter with its nose in the beef stroganoff, vigorously gulping the main entrée as fast as it could. “Stop!” shouted the man as he pushed the animal to the floor. “Enough!” he yelled. “This is enough!” Turning to the couple he said, “Don't you have any control over your dog? Why did you ever want to bring this obnoxious animal with you?” “What?” said the wide-eyed guest. “That's not our dog -- we thought it was yours!”

Expanding Man

STAN SMITH’S TENNIS CLASS

laugh a bit with

Boys & Girls 6 - 16 Years Old

Steely Dan spoke of the “expanding man” in Deacon Blues as one who is “thinking of all the possibilities of life”. Golf, on the other hand, has another version of the expanding man. This refers to the change of distances in the arms and body as forces are pulling the club out away from them through impact. Golfers start in a given distance from the ball, yet by impact may feel the arms “expanding away” from them. Centrifugal forces in golf are attempting to pull the club away from the body into impact. Players can combat this force in several common ways: 1. Start with the ball on the toe end of the club like Zach Johnson and others. 2. Back away from the ball through impact by standing up or away from the ball. 3. Try feeling the club swing through a space interior of the ball by impact. Usually players prefer ideas one and three, but many golfers do back away from their address posture/position in order to hit the ball more centrally on the clubface. The key is understanding these forces are normal, and if you suffer heel hits, it’s a concern to address.
