SUPERMAN: (from page one) and stapled science fiction “fanzine.” • Not satisfied with that super character, the young men decided to give him a makeover by devising a much more respectible hero figure. They gave him an alien background, superhuman strength with the ability to fly, and a secret double identity. •
They gave their new character the name “Superman” and began drawing comic strip stories about his adventures that they hoped might some day become a national newspaper comics feature. They sent samples of their work to all of the newspaper syndicates, but were rejected by every single one.
• Discouraged into believing their Superman idea would never sell, the pair landed a job in the comics field in 1935 writing and illustrating detective and adventure stories for a New York publisher, National Allied Publications. • In 1938, when editor Vin Sullivan of National Comics in New York was undecided about what type of graphic to use on the cover of a new startup magazine they called Action Comics, someone pulled the dusty Superman proposal out of a drawer. The proposal showed a picture of a handsome muscular man with a cape lifting a car over his head with his bare hands, which the publisher thought was ridiculous. But after more thought he realized

that the picture might be just what the cover needed to catch people's interest. He wrote Siegel and Shuster and asked them if they could put together a 13-page story for Action Comics #1. The boys eagerly went to work cutting and pasting their story into comic strip form and sent it off along with followup sequels. • The first Action Comics issue went on the newsstands that summer. Sales figures started off slowly, but when issue #4 hit the stands, sales went off the charts. Astounded by this, the publisher himself went down to his local newsstand and approached a kid who was paging through an Action Comic. “Can I ask why you're reading that one?” he asked. “Sure, mister,” said the boy. “This is the one that has Superman in it.”

Everyday CHEAPSKATE
®
by Mary Hunt
By Samantha Weaver
* It was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, beloved creator of Sherlock Holmes, who made the following sage observation: “I should dearly love that the world should be ever so little better for my presence. Even on this small stage we have our two sides, and something might be done by throwing all one’s weight on the scale of breadth, tolerance, charity, temperance, peace and kindliness to man and beast. We can’t all strike very big blows, and even the little ones count for something.” * In France, writing a bad check is not just bad form -- it’s illegal. Violators of the “cheque sans provision” law are subject to criminal fines and can be banned from writing checks for up to five years. * You might be shocked if you came across the term “lust-house” in, say, a newspaper. You shouldn’t be, though -- it doesn’t mean what you think it means. The term comes to us (unsurprisingly) from German, where the word might refer to either a country house or a tavern with a beer garden. * There was a time when the game of checkers was commonly -- and condescendingly -- called “chess for ladies.”
The Proper Care and Feeding of a Garbage Disposal Everyday CHEAPSKATE
It took me a ridiculously long time to recognize the obvious connection® between holidays, dinner parties and emergency calls to the plumbby Mary Hunt er due to hopelessly clogged drains. Why was it always on a holiday, always after hours, always extra expensive and always embarrassing given a houseful of company? I’ll tell you why: Because that’s when I would do stupid things like peel 10 pounds of potatoes, cram all of the peels into the garbage disposal and expect them to all magically disappear. Ditto with prepping artichokes. Or I’d throw a couple of whole lemons in there, thinking they would freshen the thing up before company arrives. I’ve learned the hard way that there is a proper way to care for and poke stuff in a garbage disposal. Learn from my mistakes, so you don’t have to make them yourself. Clogged drains are a major inconvenience, and garbage disposal repair can be costly.
Vol. XIII Issue 24
Don’t grind anything that’s tough and fibrous, like corn husks, celery stalks, onion skins and artichokes. They can block the drain and tangle and jam the garbage disposal motor. Don’t turn off the motor or the cold water until grinding is finished. When grinding is complete, turn off the garbage disposal first. Let a strong flow of cold water run for at least 15 seconds so it can flush out any remaining particles. Then turn off water. Don’t put large amounts of any kind of food down the garbage disposal all at once. If you must, feed food into the garbage disposal a little at a time with the cold water running. This will help the food scraps flow freely through the drainpipes and plumbing. Don’t put coffee grounds down the garbage disposal, even though they won’t harm the garbage disposal and can actually help eliminate odors. The problem is coffee grounds can accumulate in drains and pipes and cause clogs, so it’s best to avoid it. Don’t ever -- that means never -- put anything in the disposal that is not biodegradable food. Your disposal is not a trash can. Don’t grind glass, plastic, metal, paper or cigarette butts. KEEP IT CLEAN: A couple of times a month, clean stubborn odors from your garbage disposal by pouring 3 to 4 tablespoons of Borax (like 20 Mule Team Borax that you’ll find in the supermarket laundry aisle) down the drain and let it sit for an hour. Without running the disposal, turn on the hot water to flush it away. Borax is a natural sink cleaner and sanitizer that effectively works on odor-causing mold and mildew that accumulate in garbage disposals. * * * Mary invites questions, comments and tips
DO THESE THINGS: Run your garbage disposal regularly. Fre* Avian veterinarians agree: One of the quent use prevents rust and corrosion, makes main health problems faced by pet parrots is obesity. Online Scammers Are Targeting You Gullibility: Growing up in a trusting world. Diminished capacity. Not fully understanding today's technology. There are all kinds of reasons why seniors are easy targets of scams. If you have a new computer, tablet or cellphone, you need to arm yourself with information to be safe from hacks and scammers. The scams nowadays are nearly brilliant in their execution and often are difficult to identify as scam attempts. Ask your local senior center to bring in experts to give talks on phone and online scams aimed at seniors. If you’ve been to one of these talks and more are scheduled, go to

YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau
Explaining the Windfall Elimination Provision A few weeks ago I wrote a column about something called the “government pension offset.” It is a law that essentially says this: If you get a pension from a job that was not covered by Social Security, that pension will be treated just like a Social Security retirement pension, and it will be used to offset any benefits you might be due on a spouse’s Social Security record. There is a companion law called the “windfall elimination provision,” more commonly known by its acronym, WEP, which usually reduces any Social Security retirement benefits earned at side jobs by folks who spent the bulk of their life working at a job that was not covered by Social Security. Most folks impacted by WEP despise the law, until they understand why it exists. To explain the reason for the law, I’ve got to start out telling you a true story. It’s the story of my neighbor Frank and his maid, Maria. They are both 66 years old. Frank is a retired mid-level manager with our local utility company. He gets a high Social Security benefit -- about $2,400. Maria is divorced and has worked all of her life at low-paying jobs. She continues to work to supplement her meager $1,150 per month Social Security check. Even though Maria gets a much smaller Social Security benefit than Frank, she might find some comfort knowing that she is getting a better deal out of the program than he is. Or to put that another way, Maria’s Social Security check represents a higher percentage of her lifetime earnings than Frank’s monthly benefit. And that has always been one of the basic tenets of the Social Security program: to raise the standard of living of lower-income workers in retirement. That is accomplished via a benefit formula structured to give poor people a better deal than their wealthier counterparts. They don’t get higher benefits. After all, Frank’s monthly Social Security check is much higher than Maria’s. But when comparing the rates of return they get based on their past incomes and the taxes they paid into the system, Maria comes out ahead. I don’t have the space to get into the nitty gritty of the Social Security benefit computation formula in this column today. (I’ve done it in many past columns.) But in a nutshell, I can tell you that Maria’s $1,150 benefit represents about 90 percent of her average lifetime monthly wage. Whereas Frank’s $2,400 Social Security check is probably about 40 percent of his average monthly pre-retirement income. So poor people get a rate of return that can be up to 90 percent. Average-income people get a return rate in the 40 percent range. People with very high incomes might get around a 30 percent rate of return. And knowing that, I can now move on to a further clarification of the windfall elimination provision. To do so, I will use myself as an example. I spent the bulk of my life working for the federal government. People hired by the government after 1982 pay into Social Security just like most other people. But folks such as myself, who were hired before then, were covered by the civil service retirement system, not Social Security. And now that
Tidbits of Coachella Valley
I am retired, I get a monthly civil-service pension. But I spent some time at jobs where I did pay into Social Security -- a few years before I got hired by the feds and some more years after I retired. And that includes the compensation I get for writing this column, for which I pay Social Security selfemployment taxes. I currently have about 15 years of Social Security covered employment. And that’s enough to get me a small Social Security check. (Ten years of Social Security work is the minimum.) My Social Security check isn’t breaking the government’s bank; it’s only about $175 per month. And that includes a WEP reduction, which I will explain. Had my benefit been figured using the regular Social Security formula, I would have received the same 90 percent rate of return that my neighbor’s maid is getting. Why? Because I look like a poor person to the Social Security Administration’s computers. I’ve got only 15 years of covered earnings. The Social Security benefit formula uses a 35-year base. In other words, there are 20 years of “zero” earnings on my Social Security record. That makes me look as poor as Maria, and that’s why I’d normally get the same 90 percent return rate. But let’s be honest: I’m not poor. I had a decent-paying government job most of my life that isn’t reflected in my Social Security earnings history. So I shouldn’t get the same rate of return that the system set up for lower income people. Instead, my earnings pattern is much more like my neighbor Frank’s. I should get the same rate of return (about 40 percent) as Frank gets, and for that matter, as all other average-income Americans get. And that’s what the windfall elimination provision does. When that WEP formula is applied to my Social Security computation, it gives me the roughly 40 percent return rate rather than the 90 percent rate intended for the very poorest of our citizens. It’s a law that makes perfect sense. Yet it has many teachers, police officers and other public employees who spent most of their working lives

in jobs not covered by Social Security -- but who, like me, paid into Social Security in side jobs -- up in arms. They think they have been singled out for Social Security benefit reductions that just aren’t fair. But almost all of these folks are not lifetime low-income workers like my neighbor’s maid, Maria. She deserves the 90 percent return rate that she is getting. But if you are someone who spent your lifetime as a teacher or a police officer, or a federal government employee like me, you are simply not in the same boat as Maria. And you shouldn’t get a poor person’s Social Security return rate. You should get a rate similar to all average-income Americans -- about 40 percent. And that’s what the windfall elimination provision is all about. One final note on this topic: There are some people who divided their careers between Social Security-covered jobs and non-Social Security-covered jobs. And the WEP law recognizes that. The more years of Social Security earnings you have, the less the WEP reduction. To learn more about that, you need to read a fact sheet produced by SSA titled “Windfall Elimination Provision.” If you are reading this column online, here is a link to it: https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/ EN-05-10045.pdf. Otherwise, you can find it at http://www.socialsecurity.gov. At the bottom of the home page, click the “Publications” link. You will find the fact sheet in the “Retirement” section under “Topics.” * * * If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has the answer. Contact him at thomas.margenau@comcast.net. ANSWER: It depends on the state, but most laboratories require a professional’s order to perform testing. I have mixed feelings about this; however, I generally agree, since a physician or other provider should provide individualized recommendations on the appropriate changes in diet, medication and fluid intake, based on the stone type, medications taken, diseases or conditions present and other factors. There are services available on the Internet that will perform laboratory testing without an order (by having a medical director in a given state order the lab), but I don’t recommend it for the reasons above. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have to take levothyroxine in order to obtain an acceptable TSH number. I have read that some doctors are stating that there is a relationship between hypothyroidism and gluten intolerance, possibly even celiac disease. Is this proven to the point where a patient should alter his or her diet and give up the basic foods of bread and cereal? -- R.K. ANSWER: People with celiac disease have a much higher risk of autoimmune thyroid disease (especially Hashimoto’s, the most common cause of low thyroid) than expected, to the point where everyone with celiac disease should have a blood test to look at thyroid levels. And, if your mom gets to the point she needs personal/physical care like bathing or dressing, they can usually help with this too. Home Care Agency Hiring a home helper through a non-medical home care, or non-medical companion care agency is the easiest, but most expensive option of the two. Costs run anywhere from $12 up to $30 an hour depending on where you live and the qualification of the assistant/aide. Here's how it works: You pay the company, and they handle everything including assigning appropriately trained and pre-screened staff to care for your mom, and finding a fill-in on days her helper cannot come. Some of the drawbacks, however, are that you may not have much input into the selection of the aide, and the helpers may change or alternate, which can cause a disruption. To find a home care agency in your area, Google “non-medical home care” followed by the city and state your mom lives in, or you can use Medicare’s home health agencies search tool Medicare.gov/hhcompare. This is a photo of an antique matching silver butter knife and fork. They each measure about 8 inches long and are in mint condition. There are no marks. We plan to add the set to our insurance. It has been in our family for generations, and we would like to learn more about the vintage and value.
A:
You have a Victorian fish knife rather than a butter knife. The fish knife and fork set were probably originally part of a set of individual knives and forks that was used when fish was served. Most sets were accompanied by master serving pieces consisting of a larger fish knife, and a fork that is wider than an individual fork and had five prongs. Victorian dinners were elaborate, and they delighted in having specific flatware for each course. As a rule, sterling silver flatware was Silver-plate fish knife and marked as sterling, fork were made in the Victorian era. so your set is silverplate. Your fish set was made in the late 1880s to the early 1900s. It should be insured for $35 to $75. A sterling set should be insured for $250 to $275. ***

DC Comics continued to reap huge profits from their syndication rights, the two men who originated the strip and kept it running were getting only a tiny fraction of the windfall. • The pair finally filed a lawsuit against DC in 1947. After some lengthy court battles, they settled for a lump payment of $94,000, and were promptly fired by the company. • In 1959, when Siegel was struggling financially, he returned to work for the company for a regular salary, but with no by-line. Six years later, he quit and filed a second unsuccessful lawsuit. Finally in the 1970s when a Superman movie began production, the company granted Siegel and Shuster pensions of $20,000 a year. After their deaths in the 1990s, their heirs filed a copyright suit and ultimately won. They permanently granted DC Comics all the rights to Superman in exchange for a settlement of several million dollars and an annual payment of $500,000. •
In 2011, a copy of the original Action Comics #1 sold at auction for $2.16 million, making it the most valuable comic book of all time. And in 2013, a Minnesota man was gutting a house he had purchased to renovate and found an old comic book sandwiched between newspapers used as insulation in the walls. Much to his surprise, it was an original 75-year-old Action Comics #1 -- and worth a fortune.
• The first television series to feature Superman aired from 1952 to 1958, starring George Reeves in the title role. Sponsored by Kellogg’s cereals, each episode cost about $15,000 to produce. Special effects included cables, wires and a hidden trampolene for Superman’s takeoffs. Filming of his flights was done in front of a projection screen showing clouds, buildings, oceans and forests for the aerial footage, with a large fan producing the wind. But once Reeves was typecast as Superman, he had difficulty landing other roles and went into depression. Sadly, he died suddenly in 1959 at age 45, his death ruled a suicide. • Christopher Reeve, the star of four Superman movies from 1978 to 1987, appeared in the first when he was 26. At age 43, he was thrown from a horse during an equestrian competition, suffering a permanent spinal cord injury. He was confined to a wheelchair and required a portable ventilator for the remainder of his life. Reeve died in 2004 at age 52. • In recent years, Clark Kent finally proposed marriage to Lois Lane, and confessed his true identity. Their long engagement culminated in their marriage in 1996, and DC Comics released “Superman: The Wedding Album” in commemoration of the 60-year relationship.

Bunker Blues
We’ve all had that experience of getting into a deep greenside bunker, only to spend two to three swings before finally expelling the ball onto the green. It usually starts with a poor lie, or sometimes stems from an uncertainty of the texture of the sand. For many seasonal golfers who play northern courses in the summer, this may be especially true. But a lot of amateurs simply hit too far behind the ball where all of the clubhead speed is absorbed by the extra sand. They think they’re hitting two inches behind the ball, but unfortunately are entering more like four to five inches instead. Many times I’ve coached golfers to try to feel like they are going to hit right behind the ball on a downward blow. Their eyes should pick a spot perhaps even at the back end of the ball. The reality is that even though they’re trying to hit that visual spot, the club really enters the sand one to two inches behind the ball. In practice, make a mark near the ball’s position in the sand and compare where your club really hit relative to that mark. When you can consistently hit two to three inches behind the mark, you’re2 bunker EGAP REgame LLIF will dramatically improve!
