Lady Bird Johnson, and the wife of the Japanese ambassador, Ryuji Takeuchi. • There are close to 4,000 cherry trees in D.C.’s park, but it’s not the nation’s largest collection. That honor belongs to Newark, New Jersey’s Branch Brook Park, the oldest county park in America, where about 4,300 trees are planted. Philadelphia also has more than 2,000 flowering cherry trees, half of which were gifted by the Japanese government in 1926 to honor the 150th anniversary of America’s independence. • The streets and parks of Vancouver, Canada are lined with an estimated 50,000 flowering cherry trees, many of which were also gifts from Japan. But the title of Cherry Blossom Capital of the World belongs to Macon, Georgia, a city with more than 300,000 trees scattered throughout its streets and parks. It all began in 1949, when a local realtor discovered a cherry tree in his Macon backyard, and made it his mission to bring more of the trees to the community. • Although there are more than 200 varieties of blossoming cherries, the most popular variety in Japan is the Yoshino. The Japanese call the cherry blossoms “sakura.” The trees belong to the rose family, with the average tree about 25 feet tall. With special care, they can reach upwards of 50 feet, with a 40-foot-wide canopy. It’s primarily Yoshinos that line D.C.’s National Mall and the Potomac waterfront.

Although the average lifespan is about 60 years, some biologists believe tuatara could live up to 200 years in captivity. • The frilled-neck lizard makes its home in Australia. It takes its name from the large pleated skin flap around its neck. Normally the frill stays folded against the lizard’s body, but when the lizard feels threatened, it unfurls its bright orange and red frill, opens its mouth wide, exposing a bright yellow interior, and hisses. The lizard also displays this behavior during courtship. When the frill is folded against the body, this lizard is a non-descript brown or gray with splotches of darker color, giving it the appearance of tree bark, enabling it blend in and hide from predators. It’s a large lizard, with the average adult reaching a length of about three feet.

* It was Irish author and editor Robert Lynd who made the following sage observation: “History may be read as the story of the magnificent rearguard action fought during several thousand years by dogma against curiosity.” * Historians say that the Halloween tradition of trick-or-treating dates back to the early European tradition of mumming, when costumed dancers would go door to door to perform choreographed routines, as well as songs and plays, in exchange for treats.

* You might be surprised to learn that on a per-capita basis, Finland has more heavymetal bands than any other country on Earth. * If you’re fortunate enough to be planning a trip to Argentina, you’ll almost certainly make a stop in Buenos Aires, the capital. While you’re there, keep an eye out for a mobile work by Raul Lemesoff. The artist, known for his eccentricity, converted a 1979 Ford Falcon into a kind of a tank -- it even has a turret that swivels. Instead of soldiers and armaments, however, this tank carries books on shelves both inside and outside the vehicle. Lemesoff drives his “Weapon of Mass Instruction” through the city streets, delivering free books to all comers. His only requirement? Recipients must promise to read what he gives them.

wider and U-shaped. This is related to the diet of each, with the alligator having more crushing power to capture prey such as turtles. The narrower snout of the croc is better suited for fish and small mammals. • Another way to tell the two apart is to look at their mouths. A crocodile's bottom front teeth protrude when its mouth is shut, but an alligator's teeth can't be seen when its mouth is closed. Their environments differ as well. Alligators dwell in fresh water, such as ponds, rivers, wetlands, lakes, and swamps, while crocs make their home in salt water.

In addition, if you lease a solar system, you will receive a production guarantee, which means if your system ever drops below the guaranteed minimum amount of power generated, not only will an alert be sent to SunPower and Renova - so the reason can be understood and solved but you will be reimbursed for the shortfall. Another reason to explore solar sooner rather than later is to ensure you receive the 30% Federal Tax Credit. With the current administration somewhat unpredictable, it may be a good idea to lock it in now rather than risk having it removed prior to its scheduled revision in 2019, when it starts to step down for a couple of years before its elimination.

Reach out to a couple of local companies that have experience with installing in the harsh desert weather, and are familiar with the expectations of local HOAs and jurisdictions. Do some homework on panel websites like SunPower.com to understand the value of installing a panel with a comprehensive warranty and one that retains the ability to continue generating electricity for decades to come. Why do Europeans get more life-extending benefits than those in the U.S.? My guess: In Europe they take the time to savor the coffee, sitting in outdoor cafes, talking with friends, taking time to relax, and not just using caffeine as a jolt to start the day.

The second study followed 185,000 people in two U.S. states for six years. The study was designed to compare the result of drinking coffee in whites versus non-whites. In this research, participants across the board who drank 2 to 4 cups per day had an 18 percent lower risk of death. It didn’t matter whether or not the coffee had caffeine.

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

Social Security and My Mom You are probably reading this column sometime in early October, which is when I always think of my mom. Her birthday was Oct. 1. She’s been dead for about 20 years now. But when I think of her, two things I remember involve her relationship with Social Security. The first is just a cute story. I started working for the Social Security Administration in 1973. I was with the agency for only about two weeks, and was still in training class, when my mother’s mother, my grandma, died. I went home for the funeral and, of course, was surrounded by scores of my grandma’s relatives and friends, many of whom were older folks on Social Security. And my mother proudly introduced me to them as “my son, the Social Security expert.” I was inundated with what seemed like a hundred questions about retirement benefits, widow’s benefits, Medicare benefits and all other elements of the government’s retirement and health insurance programs. With all of 10 days of training under my belt, I somehow managed to stumble my way through some dubious answers to their questions. If someone had told me then that someday I would be writing a nationally syndicated question and answer column about Social Security, I would have laughed in their face! The second memory of my mom is a bit of a parable about Social Security. It’s the story of her and the lady who lived next door to us. It involves the sometimes strained relationship between working-

Tidbits of Coachella Valley

women and stay-at-home moms (which I won’t touch with a 10-foot pole) and their experiences with Social Security (which I will address). It’s also a story of the haves and have-nots. I’ve told this tale before in my column, but it bears repeating. I grew up in a small Midwestern town where rich folks in big houses lived very near poor folks occupying much more modest dwellings. My dad was a janitor struggling to make ends meet. My mother had to work to help pay the mortgage and keep enough groceries on the table to feed me and my three siblings. Just behind our house across the alley was a big home, owned by the vice president of a local bank. His wife, even though she had a degree in journalism, never worked outside the home once the first of an eventual brood of six children came along. My brothers and sister and I got along famously with the children of the banker and his wife. We were always playing games, shooting baskets or otherwise just hanging out. On the other hand, our parents rarely spoke. I guess the economic and educational gulf between them was just too great to foster any kind of meaningful relationship. And that gulf only widened later in life between my mom and the neighbor lady after both of them became widows. Sadly, most of the friction and resentment came from my mom’s side of the alley. And much of it had to do with Social Security. Before I go on, I must point out this general Social Security tenet. The rules say that if you are due two Social Security benefits, you don’t get them both. You only get an amount equal to the one that pays the higher rate. My mom’s situation was a good example of that. Because she had worked most of her life, she received her own Social Security retirement benefit. The widow’s rate she was due on my dad’s Social Security account was only slightly higher than her own. That meant she kept getting her own benefit, but she got a small bump in her monthly checks from my dad’s side of the Social Security ledger. Across the alley, the neighbor lady received no benefits on her own Social Security account, but she did get a rather substantial widow’s benefit from her deceased banker husband. It was quite a bit more than my mother received from her combined accounts. And this peeved my mother to no end. Sadly, she lived the rest of her life bearing deep resentment, partly to her neighbor, and partly to the Social Secu-

Page 11

rity system that allowed what she perceived to be this injustice to happen. I can still hear her griping: “THAT WOMAN never worked a day in her life. And there she is in that big house, getting more money each month from the government than me, a woman who worked hard all her life just trying to make ends meet!” I used to ask my mom this: “If you believe things are unfair, what do you think we should do about it? Should we take widow’s benefits away from Mrs. (X) because you don’t think she deserves them?” My mother might get a nasty little gleam in her eye with that thought, but she always admitted that the neighbor was due her widow’s benefits. My mom would counter with this: “I think I should get my own full Social Security benefit AND my own full widow’s benefit. After all, I worked and paid for my Social Security, and your dad worked and paid for his Social Security!” On the surface, it seems like a valid point. In fact, I’ve heard thousands of workingwomen make the same argument over the years. But here is the flip side of that coin: If workingwomen can get their own retirement benefits and full spousal benefits, then shouldn’t workingmen be offered the same? For example, why can’t I get my own Social Security retirement benefit and at the same time collect husband’s benefits on my wife’s Social Security account? Or here is another example. I have a neighbor who is a widower. He was an executive with a large corporation. His wife was a librarian. They each got their own Social Security. But his benefit was much larger than hers. Now that she is gone, should he be allowed to get his own rather generous Social Security check and a dependent widower’s benefit from his wife’s Social Security? The truth is: Social Security spousal and survivor benefits have always been classified as “dependent’s” benefits. They are meant to be paid to a lower-earning (or no-earning) spouse who was financially dependent on the higher-income spouse. They were never meant to be some kind of add-on marital bonus. Indeed, the Social Security system would have gone bankrupt decades ago if we were doing that! If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has the answer. Contact him at thomas.margenau@comcast.net. This form contains the plan’s contact information and the employer’s identification number, which can be used to locate any plan that inherited the assets in a merger, acquisition or sale. You can also find recently filed 5500s yourself at websites like FreeERISA.com.

Dear Approaching: If you think you may have lost track of a 401(k) retirement account, you aren’t alone. As Americans jump from job to job, many leave scraps of their company sponsored 401(k) plans behind, believing they’ll deal with it later, but never do. To help you look for an old 401(k), here are some suggestions along with some free resources that can help you search. Contact Employer The first way to find a previous 401(k) account is to contact your old employer’s human resources department. Ask them to check their plan records to see if you ever participated in their 401(k) plan, and if so, how much it’s worth. You’ll need to provide them your Social Security number and the dates you worked for them. They should be able to either get you the forms necessary to roll over your retirement money to a different 401(k) or to an IRA, or to give you contact information for any outside financial institution overseeing the plan on your employer’s behalf. By following the appropriate instructions you get, you’ll be able to move your retirement money where you want.

Sofa Is Twentieth Century Reproduction Q:

The Sheraton sofa in this photo is over 55 years old. It is 72 inches long, has a camel back with rolled arms and straight legs with spade feet. The frame is mahogany; it is upholstered with the original burgundy silk fabric and has a single long cushion, which is removable. It is in excellent condition. What can you tell us about its histor y and value?

A:

Your sofa is an example of Chippendale period of furniture rather than Sheraton. Sheraton furniture is neo-classic with turned legs that are straight and also often tapered. The legs are elegant and delicate. In contrast, Chippendale legs are heavy and often decorated with

Q:

I have enclosed the mark that is on the bottom of an ironstone teapot that I bought at a tag sale years ago. Its shape is not typical of teapots. It is long and low with scrolled handles and in perfect condition. The measurements are 7 inches high, 10 inches long and 7 inches wide. It is decorated with gold flowers, brown and green leaves against a cream colored background. It has the original tea leaves strainer. Could you please provide any information on the maker, age and value of my teapot?

LOCAL EXPERTISE, GLOBAL REACH

Vol. XIII Issue 42

A:

Hall’s China Company made your teapot. The firm was founded in East Liverpool, Ohio, in 1903. Your teapot is an example of their “Autumn Leaf” pattern that was introduced in 1933. Hall’s China Company produced a complete line of Autumn Leaf dishes and kitchenware that was sold exclusively through Jewel Tea Company that was located in Barring, Illinois. Jewel Tea Company sold food and coffee doorto-door and the “Autumn Leaf” wares were given as premiums for item purchased. Mary Dunbar was the maiden name of the “Jewel Tea Lady,” Mary Reed Hartson. She wrote their monthly newsletter and a cook book. The pattern was not hand painted, it was a decal and in production until the mid-1970s. Autumn Leaf pattern dishes and kitchenware were premiums for Jewel Tea Company.

Your mid-century teapot would probably be worth $25 to $50.
