• In Greek mythology, Hades was a place where souls were mistreated, but not harshly. However, below Hades was a place called Tartarus (from the Greek words meaning “deep place”) where evil souls were sent to receive severe punishment equal to their crimes. • When Genghis Khan and his Mongol tribes spread out from their central Asian homeland in the 1200s, they traveled through Russia, Persia, China, and Poland, leaving a path of destruction in their wake. Because they seemed to turn the world into a type of living hell, the European name for the tribe derived from that mythological Greek underworld: the Tartars. • One of the things Genghis Khan and his tribe typically ate was raw meat, usually horse meat or beef, which was minced and seasoned. This dish was named after them, and the same word “tartar” entered the French language meaning “raw” or “rough” since the Mongols were rough and the meat they ate was raw, as in steak tartar. • When the French began eating this raw meat dish, they added a sauce which was made from mayonnaise and raw, roughly chopped pickles and finely minced onions. This sauce took on the name as well: tartar sauce.

• Mayonnaise was considered a delicate creation • Today tartar sauce is a popular condiment that was difficult to prepare. Everyday CHEAPSKATE

®

by Mary Hunt By Samantha Weaver

* The unknown soul who made the following sage observation must have been a keen observer of events: “A politician can appear to have his nose to the grindstone while straddling a fence and keeping both ears to the ground.” * Swedish chemist and engineer Alfred Nobel, famed inventor of dynamite and originator of the Nobel Prizes, could speak five languages fluently by the time he was 17 years old. * Most languages change dramatically over time. If we in modern America were to try to read, say, “Beowulf” (which was written in Old English), only those who have spent time studying the language would be able to make out more than a word or two here and there. If you’re from Iceland, however, this isn’t the case; the written language there has remained virtually unchanged for more than 1,000 years. Modern Icelanders have no trouble reading sagas that were written in the 10th century. * Those who study such things say that fully one-third of all your brainpower is used for vision. * At some point in your life you’ve probably gotten your hands gooey with papier-mache, whether you were making crafts yourself or helping your kids. You may not have realized, though, that the term “papier-mache” means “chewed-up paper” in French. * You might be surprised to learn that there are people who study how air quality, humidity, the hardness of the water and pollution affect people’s hair. According to these researchers, the worst American cities for your tresses are Corpus Christi, Texas; Olympia, Washington; and Pittsburgh. *** Thought for the Day: “Jobs are like going to church: It’s nice once or twice a year to sing along and eat something and all that, but unless you really believe there’s something holy going on, it gets to be a drag going in every single week.” -- Thomas Michael Disch (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

It’s a Smelly World Out There

Nok-Out and I met quite by accident. In searching for ways my readers could deal with offensive odors, we found each other online. I’ve used it continuously in my home since then, and ® recommended it to readers facing serious and potentially expensive odor issues. by Mary Hunt

7. Every nursing home and convalescent hospital needs a steady supply of Nok-Out coming through the door. I won’t go into detail, but just believe me when I say there’s not a smell a nursing home facility can produce that’s too much for Nok-Out. A fresh, clean and sanitized environment makes people happy. 8. Nok-Out is made in America. That means a lot to me. But even better, the folks on the Nok-Out website are the nicest people on Earth and will do anything to help anyone eradicate any odor anywhere. Yep, that’s just how nice they are.

Not everything in life can be doused in bleach. But Nok-Out? No problem! (It was recently rebranded under the name SNiPER, but only the name is different and it’s still available under the Nok-Out label.)

You could buy a lot of chlorine bleach for the price of a gallon of Nok-Out (about $38 plus shipping). But bleach is toxic, and you can’t wash your hands in it or spray yourself down to remove your human smell when you go hunting, just in case you were planning to do that. And you So, today, I thought I would sum it all up surely wouldn’t spray down your baby’s nursery by giving you the top eight reasons that I am ADVERTISING PROOF with bleach, or the drapes, carpet or musty, hooked on Nok-Out. The network recently announced that the season four premiere of “Good Witch” will be Sunday, April 29 (9 p.m. ET/PT), marking the 10th anniversary of the network’s most popular movie franchise. It began with “The Good Witch” in 2008, the first of seven highly successful movies that led to the launch of the prime-time series, which routinely appears in the top-five shows on ad-supported cable on an Bailee Madison incredibly competitive Sunday night. In season four, Cassie Nightingale (played by Catherine) and Sam (James Denton) are newly engaged and slowly work on wedding plans while helping their kids, Grace (Bailee Madison) and Nick (Rhys Bond), mend their friendship. Grace’s senior year of high school finds her uncertain about plans for college, bringing a bittersweet lesson about life and love. Housebreaking is hands-down the No. One problem for dog owners. Take this recent letter from a reader: “My Yorkie Randy urinates in my home, and I’m seriously at the point of giving him away. We love him dearly, but I can’t have my home ruined. He has a doggy door that he uses, but I keep finding puddles in the house. Help! You are my last resort.” Reads like the TV Guide log line for this week’s episode of “Desperate Housebreakers.” What the writer fails to mention is that Randy is 9 years old and never trained. That’s 3,285 days’ worth of Yorkie urine on the carpet -which, in fact, is the impetus for the cry for help. She’s recarpeting the whole house and that’s not cheap. “I’m not going to spend all this money on new carpet just to have Randy ruin it.” Readers, take note: Most people will spend thousands on new carpeting and nothing on dog training. Hello?? Why not put a little something into dog training and save thousands on carpeting? Housebreaking a dog should not break the bank. It requires a system and consistent adherence to that system. A reasonably intelligent person can housebreak a dog in three to seven days. Here’s how:

1) Establish and adhere to a feed-waterwalk schedule. This conditions your pup’s body to eliminate waste at specific times of the day and night, as determined by you -- so stick to the schedule.

Finding Extra Dollars For many of us, every dollar counts in retirement, but there are certain things we can’t do without -- like food. If you look for ways to save a few dollars here and there, those thrifty little savings soon add up. Here are some tips to follow: * Grocery shop once a week, with a list. You’ll spend less because you’ll only be in the store once and won’t be tempted to pick up extra items. Grocers are savvy marketers who know how to place tempting items within easy reach as we stroll by. Avoid aisles that don’t have anything on your list.

Fact: The average dog can sniff out one part urine to one million parts water. He will return to that marked spot time and again if you don’t thoroughly neutralize the scent. 4) Provide a proper diet. The right amount and kind of food for your dog will be determined by his age. But an age-appropriate diet is essential in keeping his digestion regular and predictable. This makes life easier for you in the training stage and works in tandem with the feed-water-walk schedule. Your dog eats, he drinks, he goes outside. Repeat as necessary. 5) Correct mistakes and praise successes. When you catch him eliminating inside, say “no,” and then immediately take him outside and praise him when you get there, whether or not he goes. With dogs, praise is the reward and the motivator, and it works -- unlike the following highly ineffective what-not-to-dos: -- Rub his nose in his mess. -- Show him his mess and say no until he thinks “No” is his name. -- “Bonk” him on the nose with your hand or a rolled-up newspaper. -- Show him his mess and lock him in a room where he can think about what he’s done. For a more detailed explanation of the five steps to a housebroken dog, or for an age-specific Feed-Water-Walk schedule, check out “When Good Dogs Do Bad Things” at unclematty.com.

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

When in Doubt, Always File a Claim Q:

I want to thank you so much for helping me out. A few months ago, I gave you the particulars of our situation. I won’t repeat all the numbers, but my husband’s benefit is substantially more than my own. You said that based on the figures I gave you, I might be due extra spousal support. I went to my local Social Security office. The clerk seemed a little confused and initially told me that if I was due more, I would have been getting it already. When I persisted, he went and talked to someone else. They came back to the desk together, printed out something from the computer and told me to read it. It supposedly said I wasn’t due anything. (I have a college degree, but I couldn’t decipher it!) When I got back home, I sent you a follow-up email. You told me to return to the office and insist on filing a claim. Long stor y short: I did so and just today I got my first spousal check in the mail, including six months of back pay. I can’t thank you enough for encouraging me to do this.

Q:

I love reading your column. I have learned so much over the years. And one of the best things you’ve taught me is how to look up information for myself -- especially at the Social Security Administration website. And by doing that, I’ve discovered that you may have given someone misinformation. The situation involved a woman who had a split marriage. She married a guy, divorced him, and then later remarried the same guy. The first marriage didn’t last 10 years. The second marriage lasted only 6 months, and then her husband died. You told her that she wasn’t due any widow’s benefits because

bending forward toward the table, over and over. It almost looks like he’s doing sit-ups while seated, and I think this must contribute to stomach acid pushing up. During the 10 days that he was away, he was sitting at a proper-height table when eating all his meals. What are your thoughts? He won’t listen to me, because I’m not a doctor! -- A.C.

M.D.

Pinpointing Cause of Hearing Loss DEAR DR. ROACH: I have worked in a loud facility for 35 years and have always worn protection and had my hearing tested annually. Several years ago, I had a threshold shift (a loss in my hearing range), and the plant nurse sent me to a hearing specialist. He said that my hearing loss is not due to noise exposure. I asked how he could tell, but I didn’t get a satisfactory answer. I later asked my primary care physician, and he didn’t know. How do you determine from the result of a test whether hearing loss is caused by noise exposure or other factors, such as illness or injury? Would a hearing aid be effective? -- J.G. ANSWER: A comprehensive exam and hearing testing can show whether the hearing loss is likely due to loud noise exposure, based on the pattern of hearing loss across different frequencies. However, I don’t think that there is 100 percent certainty about making or excluding noise exposure as the cause of the hearing loss from the pattern. I would think that an independent evaluation, by a certified audiologist and your own ENT doctor, might give you additional information, including a discussion about how much benefit you might get from a hearing aid.

ANSWER: Believe me, being a doctor doesn’t mean people always listen to you. However, I do hope your father listens to you, because I agree with you that his eating position may contribute to mechanical acid reflux: The increased pressure from his bent-over position may be forcing acid up into his esophagus. However, being on holiday may lead to other reasons he was not bothered. Maybe he was avoiding foods that cause symptoms. Maybe he was feeling less stressed. It’s possible he ate earlier and went to bed a longer time after eating, which allows the stomach to empty so there is less acid at night, when more damage to the esophagus can occur due to the loss of gravity and swallowing. Sometimes several lifestyle choices are needed to address GERD. I always prefer to work on those before prescribing medication treatments, especially because the proton pump inhibitors like omeprazole have long-term side effects that are best avoided, if possible.

Shulkin, Again It’s not looking good for Department of Veterans Affairs chief David Shulkin to continue in his job. He’s come under the piercing gaze of the Office of the Inspector General again ... never a good sign. First it was traveling on the government dime to Denmark and taking his wife along, thanks to emails doctored by Shulkin’s chief of staff that indicated that the wife’s trip could be paid for. Next came the recent scathing OIG followup report on the Washington, D.C., VA Medical Center, which had an egregious laundry list of outrageous tales. Then, White House chief of staff John Kelly had to tell Shulkin to zip his lip, stop talking to the press and to keep to the business at hand, which is to focus on veteran care.

Even at first glance, this is a very stupid thing to do. How, one wonders, is a member of the security staff supposed to protect the VA secretary, and possibly be in a position to quickly pull out a gun to protect him, if he’s carrying furniture? Second, it’s additionally stupid because maybe that highly trained member of the staff doesn’t want the respect due his position to be insulted in that way. In a short statement before a meeting of a Congressional subcommittee on the VA budget, Shulkin said he deeply regrets all the distraction. He said he’s made it clear to his staff that he has no tolerance for anything other than the business they have to do for VA. Oh, really? Apparently he forgot to mention the run to Home Depot or using his security staff to haul and deliver his personal household furniture. * * * Freddy Groves regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. the fictitious ZIP Code 90909 belonging to the fictitious town of Neptune, California, home of the also fictitious teen detective Veronica Mars.

ZIP CODE FACTS

• There's a 12345 ZIP which belongs to General Electric in Schenectady, N.Y. • The lowest ZIP Code is 00501 in Holtsville, New York exclusively denoting the U.S. Internal Revenue Service center there. • The highest is 99950 in Ketchikan, AK. • The postal service was hard-pressed to keep the mail delivered on time during World War II. Many postal workers left to join the war effort just when the volume of mail was increasing greatly. Whereas mail had customarily been carried on trains which gave workers time to sort it out, it was now increasingly being carried by planes, which greatly reduced the time in transit. • In 1944 a postal inspector named Robert Moon developed an idea for a postal code that would help sort mail more quickly. He proposed a set of three digits that would denote the state, city, and area. Although his idea took twenty years to catch on, he is still considered to be the father of the ZIP Code.

• 10001 is the Empire State Building in New York City. 55555 is Young America, MN. 22222 is Arlington, VA. Newton Falls, Ohio, has the ZIP Code 44444. During the 1970s, signs at the city limits proclaimed, “Newton Falls has zip!” • Black Rock City, NV, a city formed entirely by the presence of the Burning Man Festival for about two weeks each summer, has been issued its own ZIP Code: 89412 • ZIP 10048 was assigned to the World Trade Center complex in New York City, until its destruction on September 11, 2001.

World War II, the mark “Made in Occupied Japan” was used until 1952. Beware: There are reproductions/fakes, many of which are made in China. Your teacup and saucer were made around 1942 and would probably fetch $20 to $25 in an antiques shop. *** This mark is on the bottom of a 1-quart glass casserole dish with matching clear glass lid that I received at my wedding shower in 1964. It is yellow, and the lid is decorated with a stylized image of the sun. The center has orange and bright-yellow rays. It is in perfect condition, and I still use it. I am just curious whether it is “antique or junque.”

Geisha Girl Cup and Saucer Are a Childhood Treasure

This is a photo of a child’s porcelain teacup with a matching saucer. Both are in ver y good condition. They are decorated with gardens, temples and Asian women in kimonos. They appear to be handpainted, and the e d g e s of the cup and saucer are redorange in color. The set was given to me by Geisha Girl porcelain was made in Japan. my nanny when I was a young child, sometime in the early 1940s. I would never part with it and hope you can provide some information on its histor y.

Q:

A: Your teacup and saucer are examples

of Geisha Girl porcelain that was made in Japan. Paper-thin porcelain with hand-painted women in kimonos was first made in Japan in the late 1800s. Blue, green, red, yellow and gold were the colors used by the decorators. Early pieces were embellished in gold and hand-painted. Many pieces were decorated with a wash of color and not always painted inside the lines. Scenes included geisha girls standing near temples, lakes, flowers and gardens. Myriad patterns can be found on tea sets, chocolate sets, saltshakers, pepper shakers, pitchers and dishes. Some pieces in the early to mid1900s were sold in dime stores and movie theaters, or as premiums/free giveaways that were packed in boxes of tea or grocery products. Early dishes were marked with the name “Nippon.” After 1921, the marks said “Japan” or “Made in Japan.” After

A:

Corning Glass Works, located in Corning, New York, made your Pyrex casserole dish. It was part of a set that included two larger dishes. The “Pyrex” mark was first used in 1915. Your casserole was part of the “Cinderella” line of glass dishes. It was introduced in the late 1950s, and the pattern is known by the name “Sunburst” or “Daisy.” Your casserole is less than an antique but more than junque. For years, any deviation from a conventional putting grip was thought to be a sign of a player having the yips or suffering from poor putting in the past. The cross handed, or left hand low, technique should really be considered a norm for any golfer who wants to putt better. If you need any proof, just look at recent Master’s champion Jordan Spieth’s putting statistics. Better yet, look at his putting performance on the world’s most difficult greens under pressure.
