Going head to head against a cup of coffee, it was designed to give the user extra pep and energy in the morning. But they found in short order that people just don’t want to drink Pepsi with their bagels and donuts, and that people tend to prefer hot drinks with their breakfast. And because the product was named “Pepsi AM” people didn’t think about drinking it at other times during the day.

• Someone in the H.J. Heinz Company figured that if red ketchup was good, green ketchup, therefore, would be even better! Called EZ Squirt, the new product was released in 2000, followed shortly after by purple ketchup and blue ketchup. They followed that with Mystery Color, which could be purple, orange, or teal. • In 1968, researchers for Procter & Gamble were experimenting with fats that could be easily digested by premature infants in order to help tiny babies gain weight more quickly. It turned out, however, that blue fries look repulsively moldy, chocolate fries turned everyone off, and cinnamon fries were so cloyingly sweet that they were more like a candied dessert than an entrée. By 2003, this line of new potato products had been withdrawn from the shelves. Yet, for a brief time in history, it was actually possible to squirt blue ketchup on green fries.

I will be turning 70 in July 2018. I wanted to delay starting my Social Security benefits until then. When should I apply? And will I get any retroactive benefits?

You should sign up for Social Security benefits two to three months before you want your benefits to start. You said you wanted to wait until age 70, in other words, July, to start your Social Security. So you should get the application ball rolling sometime in April or May. You can do that by calling 800-772-1213 to set up an appointment to file by phone or in person at your local Social Security office. Or you can file online. You asked about retroactivity. Of course, there wouldn’t be any retroactive benefits if you want your benefits to begin when you are 70. You will simply start getting your first check in August. (Social Security checks always come one month behind. So the July check will be paid to you in August.) But you do have other choices that would involve retroactive benefits. Any Social Security claim filed after full retirement age comes with the option of up to six months of retroactive payments. So, for example, if you waited until July when you are 70 to file, instead of starting your benefits then, you could say you want to use January as your start date. Then you would get a retroactive check. That’s the good news. The bad news is your ongo-

ing monthly benefit rate would be smaller. Instead of getting 132 percent of your basic Social Security benefit that would be payable at age 70, you would get about 128 percent. So you would just have to decide if you want that big back paycheck, or if you’d rather have an extra 4 percent for the rest of your life. I will be 66 on March 22, 2018. I heard I have to be age 66 for a full calendar month before I can get my first Social Security check. Is this true?

I don’t follow your logic and I don’t think the government owes you anything. First of all, are you really banking and saving your Social Security check trying to earn interest? I think most of us are using that check to pay the mortgage or to make a car payment or buy groceries. In other words, we’re spending the money, not letting it sit in a savings account. Blisters May Need Medication for Life DEAR DR. ROACH: A year ago, I broke out with pimples on my back, arms and thighs. They itched so badly I thought I would go mad. A dermatologist took a biopsy and told me it was an autoimmune disease called bullous pemphigoid. I was started on prednisone and doxycycline. When it cleared up, I would stop the medication, but it came back. The doctor said she thinks I’ll have to take medication for the rest of my life. I don’t like taking this medication, as it blurs my eyesight and I lose energy. I also have osteoporosis. I do take some vitamins. -- G.B. ANSWER: Bullous pemphigoid is an autoimmune disease that causes blisters, mostly in older adults. The blisters are large and tense (as opposed to pemphigus, an even more dangerous autoimmune disease, in which the blisters are soft). Bullous pemphigoid tends to come and go over months or even years. Diagnosis is confirmed by biopsy.

ANSWER: Ten months is too long to treat something empirically. It’s time to find out what this fungus might be, and that means a visit to a dermatologist, who can do a culture of the infection to find out what it is. There are some unusual fungi that can be passed from animals (dogs, cats, pigs, horses, cattle) to humans and cause skin infection. Rarely is systemic treatment necessary.

Same-Day Urgent Care at All VA Facilities? The Department of Veterans Affairs has just announced that all 1,000 of its facilities are available for same-day care for primary or mentalhealth needs. That sounds great. But there are caveats. Same-day care doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll go in that day. There is a protocol to determine just how urgent your case actually is. You might get a real visit, or you might get advice from a nurse, a telehealth or video visit, an appointment to see a specialist or a prescription filled that day, or you might get an email. Same-day care also applies only to days and times that a facility is open. To learn more about the process of getting urgent care, go to www.accesstocare.va.gov. Check the Frequently Asked Questions while you’re there. You’ll see a list of locations with the hours and days each facility is open (some are MondayFriday only, with regular business hours), as well as the services they provide. Also, in the FAQ, note the way nonurgent wait times are calculated. If you want an appointment and they can’t fit you in for six days, your wait is six days. OK, that’s fair. If, on the other hand, you are a returning patient whose physician has requested you return at a certain time, the wait time is calculated as days between the requested date and the date they can actually get you in. They give this example: Your doctor wants you back in 30 days, but they can’t fit you in until 45 days, then your wait time is 15 days.

Villeroy & Boch made your plates. Johann Franz Boch founded his dinnerware factory in 1748 in Mettlach, Germany. The first factory was in a Benedictine abbey in Mettlach. In 1836, he merged with Nicholas Villeroy. Over the years, they added more factories in several cities. They produced dinnerware, steins, beverage sets, punch bowls, beakers, plaques and drinking cups. Villeroy & Boch is still in business.
