• The Papillon derives its name from the long and fringed hair on the ears that resemble butterfly wings, and the French word for “butterfly” is papillon. They were bred as rat-catchers. Marie Antoinette owned one that reportedly ran out from under her skirt after she was executed. • The Great Pyrenees was bred by Basque shepherds who inhabited the Pyrenees Mountains of southern France and northern Spain. The Pyrenees Mountains were named for Pyrene, a mythical Greek princess who was raped by Hercules, gave birth to a serpent, was killed by wild animals, and buried under the mountain range that now bears her name. • The Pekingese was bred in the Chinese city of

Federal Meat Inspection Act in 1906, many meat companies fought the legislation and even denied inspectors access to their facilities. But Oscar Mayer became an early supporter of the bill, claiming they had nothing to hide.

so successful that the owner refused to renew their lease because he wanted to run the business himself.
• The two brothers borrowed $10,000 and opened a new meat market two blocks away, naming it after Oscar, and the Kolling Meat Market went out of business within a year.
• In 1924 Oscar Mayer introduced a novel product: packaged pre-sliced bacon, for which they received a patent. • In 1936 they had an automobile built that was shaped like a hot dog, and they hired a midget to drive it to events, billing it as “the world’s smallest chef driving the world’s biggest hot dog.” Although many pint-size actors played the part, the very first one they hired was Meinhardt Raabe, who played the part of Little Oscar for several years and then headed to Hollywood where he landed the one and only film role of his career: as the munchkin coroner in “The Wizard of Oz” who declares the Wicked Witch of the East “really most sincerely dead.” • Raabe claimed to have been the person who suggested that Oscar Mayer sell sausages in tin cans so that the product would appear in two different places in the supermarket: the meat aisle and the canned goods aisle. Production began just at the start of World War II. The U.S. Government immediately realized that canned sausages were perfect for feeding hungry soldiers in the field, and almost their entire production was diverted to the war effort. This exposed many soldiers to Oscar Mayer products and ensured the continuing success of the brand. • Today there are six Weinermobiles and one Weinie-Bago on the road, generally driven by college students.

Dog Breeds (from page one) Peking (now called Beijing) and is one of the oldest breeds. It’s also one of the breeds most closely related to the wolf, along with the Akita, Malamute, Basenji, and Shar-Pei. • The Shar-Pei is known for its abundance of loose skin and deep wrinkles. The breed originated in Canton, China. The name means “sand skin” and refers to the texture of its short, rough, wrinkled coat. A Shar-Pei’s tongue is a blue-black color, making it the only other dog besides the Chow Chow that does not have a pink tongue. • The Yorkshire Terrier is a small dog breed developed during the 19th century in Yorkshire, England, specifically to catch rats in clothing mills. During World War II, a Yorkie named Smoky saved the lives of soldiers by dragging a communications cable through an 8-inch-wide, 60-foot-long drainage culvert. • The Chihuahua was named for the Mexican state of Chihuahua. The word means “dry sandy place.” The Chihuahua is the smallest of all purebred dogs. A Chihuahua named Milly at 3.8 inches tall (9.65 cm) is the world’s smallest dog. At the age of 2 years old, she weighed 1 pound (.45 kg). In a comparison of brain to body size ratio, the Chihuahua has the largest sized brain. The Taco Bell dog’s name was Gidget and she was in many commercials (not all for Taco Bell). She died in 2009 at the age of 15.
Coonhound was bred as a hunting dog in the Southeastern U.S. and was only recognized as an established independent breed in 1946. • Basset Hounds were bred for the purpose of pursuing rabbits, using their keen sense of smell to track them down. Only Bloodhounds have a better sense of smell. “Basset” comes from the French word “bas” for “low” and refers to the low-slung stature of the dog. It has the longest ears of any breed, with Bloodhounds a close second. The ears funnel scents to the nose. Because they are big-boned with heavy bodies and deep chests, they are poor swimmers.

When dock workers were unloading ships laden with all sorts of Chinese goods, they referred to the cargo as “chow chow” meaning a mixed up mish-mash of items. When they unloaded a breed of Chinese dogs,2. Dog Breeds: To page 15
• There are two types of Husky: the Siberian Husky and the Alaskan Malamute. The word “husky” started out in the mid-1800s as “hoskey dog” or “esky dog” which both refer to “Eskimo dog.” The Siberian Husky originated in northeastern Siberia and was bred by the Chukchi Eskimos of northeastern Asia to pull heavy loads long distances, often across rough terrain in bitterly cold weather conditions with very little food. They were also used to herd reindeer and used as watchdogs. Huskies have a thick double coat that keeps them well insulated. Their undercoat is short and warm, while the overcoat is long and water-resistant. Their almond-shaped eyes allow them to squint to keep out blowing snow.

* It was famed journalist and news anchor Edward R. Murrow who made the following sage observation: “Just because your voice reaches halfway around the world doesn’t mean you are wiser than when it reached only to the end of the bar.” * Thomas Jefferson was an inventor as well as a statesman, but he refused to take out patents on any of his ideas. He believed that inventions should benefit all of humanity, not just himself. * Many people know American counterculture figure Ken Kesey as the author of the 1962 novel “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” which presents a disturbing portrait of life in a mental institution. It’s less well known, though, that Kesey got an inside view of the system when he worked as a janitor in a mental hospital before he became famous. * Those who study such things say that a typical newspaper contains just 30 percent editorial content -- 70 percent of the paper you buy is taken up by advertising. * The last country in the world to get telephones was the South Asian nation of Bhutan, and both television and the Internet were banned there until 1999. Incidentally, Bhutan also is the only nation in the world in which the well-being of the citizens is so important that the government measures the country’s Gross National Happiness. * The Beatles was not the first band in which John Lennon played. Those previous groups obviously didn’t work out, though; in fact, at one point Lennon broke a washboard over a bandmate’s head during a dispute. After the Beatles’ success, though, Lennon apologized in style: He bought the poor guy a supermarket. * In Germany, Rice Krispies don’t say “Snap, Crackle, Pop”; they say “Knisper, Knasper, Knusper.” *** Thought for the Day: “A hick town is one in which there is no place to go where you shouldn’t be.” -- Alexander Woollcott

to which number had been dialed: The number one had only a few clicks, and the number nine had many. It was much quicker to dial a low number than a high one. Area codes were assigned based on population, so that places with the highest call volumes could make the quickest calls. New York got 212, which had the fewest number of clicks possible on a rotary phone. Los Angeles got 213, while Chicago got 312, and Detroit got 313. Anchorage, Alaska was designated 907, a total of 26 clicks.
AREA CODES
• In the early days of telephone communiation, phone numbers included a series of both words and numbers, and an operator was required in order to complete a call. For instance, the fictional number of Lucy and Ricky Ricardo was “Murry Hill 5-9975.” Murray Hill denoted the town they lived in. In the Elizabeth Taylor film Butterfield 8, the title referred to the first digits of her phone number. • Later, Bell Telephone replaced the words with letter abbreviations, so Murry Hill became MU, Butterfield became BU, and so forth. • As telephone use quickly became more widespread, engineers at Bell Telephone realized that an increase in calling volume would cause problems. First was that the spoken words and letters in the number prefix were easy to misunderstand. Second, as the industry grew it would be prohibitively expensive to hire enough telephone operators to assist every call. Third. in any heavily populated area they would quickly run out of phone numbers if only five digits were being used. Fourth was that a system using only numbers would be far more efficient. • In the 1940s, Bell Telephone began working with AT&T on the “North American Numbering Plan.” Today we know it as the area code. Gradually they began to transition the country into a ten digit system.

She’s a very good girl; she doesn’t go out. She’s that picture-perfect daughter who every mother dreams of having. But she’s also a teenager who’s dealing with newfound insecurities. She’s in love for the first time. I think what’s cool is she’s a lot more imperfect. I found it really refreshing to get to play that.” *** I need more “GLOW”! -- Jennie F., via email

Bailee Madison has been a busy actress since the family-adventure film of 2007. She’s been in tons of stuff, including “Wizards of Waverly Place,” “Trophy Wife” and “The Fosters.” Presently you can catch her in the “Good Witch” series on Hallmark (which airs Sunday nights at 9/8c), where she plays Catherine Bell’s daughter, Grace. I spoke with her recently, and she told me about the joy of co-starring in a blockbuster like “Terabithia,” as well as how much fun it is to play a witch’s daughter on “Good Witch.” Of “Terabithia,” Bailee raved: “I was in New Zealand for over six months, and it’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve visited. The blacksand beaches and just the culture-- it was such a special time for me. That movie is so iconic to so many people on so many levels, and I got to be a part of bringing a book to life. Through the application and review process, your utility will determine that your solar provider is installing your system in accordance with the utility’s guidelines. This is done before your job is scheduled, and as your city paperwork is being processed. A local company such as Renova Energy that is experienced and familiar with each of these entities can help ensure that this process is efficient and complete. After your installation is complete, your city will notify the utility. Your solar contractor will submit the final documents and the utility will review everything and issue a Permission to Operate (PTO). Your new billing format will go into effect on the next full billing cycle and you can begin to enjoy your solar savings! Renova Energy is an award-winning local company founded a decade ago that designs and installs commercial and residential solar and advanced battery systems. Solar consultants will answer all your questions and help you decide if solar is right for you - not pressure you into buying a system. Learn more at

Dog Talk with Uncle Matty By Matthew Margolis

Good Don’ts and the Five P’s for Dog Training I heard some simple words for dog owners to live by on the radio recently, and they are paraphrased here: Don’t ask: “What did you do?” He’ll never answer you. Don’t say his name with the word “no.” He’ll never come to you. Don’t point your finger at him. He’ll never trust your hands. Don’t say “no” over and over and over again. It’s only a word. Don’t tell him he’s a bad dog. Why is he a bad dog? Maybe it’s you! “Don’ts” are often thought of as negative speak, especially on the West Coast. But these are the good don’ts, the important ones, the ones that will keep your relationship with your dog strong and healthy as the two of you navigate the challenges of interspecies communication. With the right approach to training, canine behavior can be modified from as early on as 8 weeks to as late in life as 12 to 14 years. The “right” approach is determined by the dog -- or, rather, his personality or temperament. For example, a hardheaded dog will require a firm voice and technique; whereas, a timid dog would only be made more fearful by the same treatment. Bottom line: In order to train your dog, you have to know your dog. And part of knowing your dog is knowing dogs in general and what to expect. Dogs bark. They chew. They jump, dig, nip, teethe, whine, wiggle and bark some more. None of this is bad -- it’s just dogs being dogs. But some of these behaviors may not align with your expectations. Consider yourself warned: Expect these behaviors. When your expectations are realistic, you can prepare. Ever heard of the Five P’s? Purpose, Preparation, Planning, Practice and Performance. They serve as good guidance in the business world, and they apply to dog training, too. Let’s apply the five P’s to the No. 1 headache for dog owners: housebreaking. Ironically, housebreaking is also one of the easiest problems Casey's Corner: Turn to page 10

ADVERTISING PROOF When You Need a Helping Hand ADVERTISING PROOF Final FinalChanges ChangesDUE: DUE:
If you spot personality changes in a senior, the cause might be physical -- or it might be a result of abuse. Ask what’s going on. If a senior who used to dress immaculately is now wearing the same clothes for days in a row, let them know you notice it and ask why. If a senior is no longer as sociable, doesn’t participate in previous activities, or appears uncharacteristically withdrawn -- ask. If you notice bruises or other injuries -- ask. In a hospital situation, you might happen to witness firsthand the lack of care or an instance of physical abuse on a resident, at which time you should report it. But if a senior who is receiving private in-home care from a hired caregiver suddenly shows signs of personality change or unexplained injury, it should immediately raise a flag. Some mean-spirited caregivers have been know to inflict "disciplinary" action on the senior by denying them food or medicine or mail as a form of punishment for breaking some rule they have imposed.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband will be 82 in July. About three years ago, I became aware of his sudden movements during the night. We were renting in Florida, and the bed was smaller than our bed at home. His body would jerk, sometimes strongly. These movements would not wake him; he just seemed asleep. He does not remember anything about it in the morning. We went to see his doctor at home, who said that he is in very good shape. He did not know what caused the movements. We are once again staying in Florida, and his body movements are the same, sometimes strong enough to shake the bed. I find it hard to believe that this is normal. Do you have any explanation or advice? -- B.N.S. ANSWER: This is a classic description of a condition called periodic limb movements of sleep. These usually involve the legs, and typically involve pointing the toe while flexing the ankle, knee and sometimes the hip. Each movement lasts a few seconds and repeats every 30 seconds or so. Your story that he doesn’t remember them is very typical: It’s usually the sleeping partner who notices them. PLMS is more common in older adults. PLMS by itself is not a disease and does not need treatment; however, it is often associated with other conditions, especially restless leg syndrome (Willis-Ekbom disease), rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (which includes sometimes violent movements) and narcolepsy.

Since your husband apparently has no symptoms, he does not need treatment. However, he should be specifically asked about symptoms like an urge to move the legs while awake, abnormal feelings in the legs, difficulty falling asleep and sleepiness during the day. These would be likely to indicate RLS or its close relative, periodic limb movement disorder.
VETERANS POST by Freddie Groves
Wait Times Getting Better, But ... It wasn’t so long ago that veterans were waiting a very long time for medical appointments. While clerks fiddled with fake appointment books and scribbled in notebooks instead of entering appointments correctly into the computer, some veterans died before being seen. In Phoenix it’s thought that 200 veterans died while waiting on care. The wait times for appointments under 30 days is looking better, at least in most places. Little Mayfield, Kentucky, is over 99 percent. Enterprise Way, Illinois, is at a whopping 100 percent, as are Hanson, Kentucky, and four locations in New York. Some locations, however, are still struggling. Salem, Virginia, for instance, has 61,000 appointments scheduled, and they’re only at an 88 percent rate. Denver is sitting at 84 percent, and Las Vegas at 83 percent. Phoenix is still struggling at 90 percent. In all those places with appointments stretching out over 30 days, veterans can opt to use the Choice Program and go for civilian care. There are steps to take, however, before you go that route. You need to get prior authorization to be sure you qualify, and mostly to ensure that the proposed facility is on the Veteran’s Choice Program (VCP) network. Your best step is to actually call that facility because there were quite a few that were unhappy because they hadn’t been paid in a timely manner. For eligibility you need to live more than 40 miles from the nearest Department of Veterans Affairs facility, or you need to take a plane or boat to get there, or you have a significant health problem, or the VA can’t give you the care you need. To determine your eligibility, go online to www.va.gov and search for Choice Program. Click the Eligibility button and answer the questions. You also can call 866-606-8198 or visit www.va.gov/ opa/choiceact. * * * Freddy Groves regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: What can an 80-year-old woman expect to have checked as part of an annual physical examination? -- H.M. ANSWER: The annual physical exam has gotten some bad press lately. Some of it is well-deserved: The actual physical exam occasionally finds some unsuspected problems, but this is quite uncommon and there is no proof that the annual physical saves lives. This argument misses the point, in my opinion. The “annual physical” is a scheduled time for important conversations about screening and prevention. These include checking blood pressure and considering cholesterol screening (cholesterol is a less-important risk factor in 80-year-old women than it is in men or in young-

New Shingles Vaccine Provides Better Protection for Seniors DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: A good friend of mine got a bad case of shingles last year, which caused her a great amount of pain and distress. She has been urging me to get the shingles vaccine shot. Should I do this? We are both in our mid-60s. --Suspicious Susan Dear Susan: Yes! There is a new shingles vaccine on the market that’s far superior to the older vaccine, so now is a great time to get inoculated, especially since you are over the age of 50. Here’s what you should know. Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a burning, blistering, often excruciating skin rash that affects around 1 million Americans each year. The same virus that causes chickenpox causes shingles. What happens is the chickenpox virus that most people get as kids never leaves the body. It hides in the nerve cells near the spinal cord and, for some people, emerges later in the form of shingles.
mends that anyone previously vaccinated with Zostavax be revaccinated with Shingrix. You should also know that Shingrix can cause some adverse side effects for some people, including muscle pain, fatigue, headache, fever and upset stomach.
In addition to the rash, about 20 to 25 percent of those who get shingles go on to develop severe nerve pain (postherpetic neuralgia, or PHN) that can last for months or even years. And in rare cases, shingles can also cause strokes, encephalitis, spinal cord damage and vision loss.
Shingrix – which costs around $280 for both doses – is (or will soon be) covered by insurance including Medicare Part D prescription drug plans, but be aware that the shingles New Shingles Vaccine vaccines are not always well covered. of four porcelain plates that were given to me by a relative. Each plate is dinner-size and decorated with pink roses, daisies and green leaves. The background is off-white and the scalloped edges are shaded from the offwhite, with a tan color. What can you tell me about the maker, age and value of my plates?

Vintage Postcard Piques Interest Q:
I found the World War I postcard seen in this picture in a home I bought in Palm Springs, California. The owners left all kinds of objects, but I thought this was kind of interesting. The front is embroidered and has a paper frame/border that is embossed with four-leaf clovers and horseshoes. It measures about 3 inches by 5 inches and is in excellent condition. The date “1919” is embroidered with the colors of the flags of the allies, France, U.S., the United Kingdom and Italy. It was postmarked and sent from England to Canada on Dec. 15, 1918. The message says that a package was received and “Merr y Christmas and Happy New Year.” At the lower portion of the card are the words “Marque EK Deposer -- Paris -- Made in France.” Do you think it is worth anything?
C. and E. Carstens Factory made bone china in Germany.
A:
C. and E. Carstens Porcelain Factory located in Blankenhain, Germany, made your plates. The factory was founded in 1790 and passed through several owners until it was taken over by Christian and Ernst Carstens in 1917. They made bone china using the bones of cows and other animals. There was a lucrative market for their coffee and tea set and other decorative china in the United States, England and Europe. The mark with a striped shield and the word “Weimar” represented the shield of the Weimar Dukes of Germany. Your plates were made in the early 1900s, and the set would probably be worth $75 to $150. * * * Address your questions to Anne McCollam, P.
O. Box 247, Notre Dame, IN 46556. Items of a general interest will be answered in this column. Due to the volume of inquiries, she cannot answer individual letters. * On May 7, 1789, President George Washington attends a ball in his honor. The event provided a model for the first official inaugural ball, which later became an annual tradition. The record number of inaugural balls attended in one night by a president is 15, set by President Bill Clinton in 1997. * On May 11, 1947, the B.F. Goodrich Company announces it has developed a tubeless tire, a technological innovation that would make automobiles safer and more efficient. In 1952, Goodrich won patents, and the tubeless tire quickly became standard on most new automobiles. * On May 13, 1958, anti-American demonstrators pelt then-Vice President Richard Nixon’s limousine with rocks in Caracas, Venezuela. Despite warnings not to send Nixon to Venezuela, where anti-American sentiment ran particularly high, he went anyway. * On May 12, 1963, Bob Dylan walks out on “The Ed Sullivan Show” after network censors rejected the song he planned to perform, “Talkin’ John Birch Paranoid Blues.” Sullivan had heard the song days before and had no concerns. * On May 9, 1971, the last original episode of the sitcom “The Honeymooners,” starring Jackie Gleason, airs. Although a perennial rerun favorite in syndication, only 39 episodes actually aired. * On May 8, 1984, the Soviet Union announces that it will boycott the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. It was a response to the United States’ decision to boycott the 1980 Moscow games. Thirteen other communist nations also refused to compete.
Embroidered post card was made in Paris.
A:
Your postcard was published in Paris, France. From 1900 to around 1950, they produced a plethora of cards that featured designs and messages and often included flags. Because of World War I, patriotic messages were prevalent from 1914 to 1919. Most were decorated with machine stitched silk. The card was probably sent by someone serving in the military. Your card is collectible and would probably be worth $10 to $25. *** This mark is on the back of a set

* On May 10, 1990, the government of the People’s Republic of China announces the release of 211 people arrested during the massive protests held in Tiananmen Square in Beijing in June 1989. Observers viewed it as an attempt by China to dispel much of the terrible publicity it received for its brutal suppression of the 1989 protests. (c) 2018 Hearst Communications, Inc.

Tuck It Under
When I work with a lot of beginning to intermediate players, the finish position requires extra attention. The body is contorting into an unusual position and needs to be balanced to be effective. Advanced players take the finish position for granted, especially when it comes to the small arch in the lower back.

Poor finish position
Correct finish position
A good finish should have the left leg straight, the right thigh up close to the left leg, the right foot up on the toe, and the upper body arching back slightly. The trick is that the hips are now “tucked under” the upper body or the stomach is pushed forward. Many beginners, or players who don’t have good core strength, will finish with their hips pushed out behind their upper body. Learn to correct the finish by tucking the hips under or pushing your belt buckle forward PROOF inADVERTISING order to feel the correct position. Good leg will assist in correct hip positioning as 5:00 well. Finalwork Changes DUE:
