Few things in this world are more confusing than credit cards -- how they work,

by Mary Hunt what they really cost and how to manage them responsibly. And while it’s just my opinion, I think issuing banks are just fine with that. They love customers who collect stacks of credit cards, who don’t read the find print, run up big debt and pay only the minimum required each month.

The Aidan Turner-starring period drama, which finished airing its third season this past August, will be back for a fourth AND fifth season, according to PBS. The fourth season is set to debut this fall on Masterpiece on PBS, drawing on Winston Graham’s sixth and seventh “Poldark” series books: “The Four Swans” and “The Angry Tide.” For the fifth season, expect a jump Aidan Turner in “Poldark” of 10 years, with the action centering on the storyline of the eighth book, “The Stranger from the Sea.” The fifth season also is expected to be the final season.

According to script writer Debbie Horsfield, season four is “very much Cornwall-based, but there are so many characters and flavors, and one of those flavors is London. There are whole sequences where we go to London, and that’s a really exciting new flavor to it. We will meet real characters, like (Prime Minister) William Pitt and (anti-slavery advocate) William Wilberforce. There are some wonderful, affirming storylines and some utterly tragic ones coming up.” ***

While I love all of these Mar vel movies that are coming out, it got me to thinking about one of my favorite Robert Downey Jr. roles, which is Sherlock Holmes. Will he make another of those movies?

Your Dog’s Personality

“When Good Dogs Do Bad Things” is the title of a book on dogs that I co-authored with Mordecai Siegal. Chapter three is titled, “Your Dog’s Personality.” That’s right, your dog’s personality is weighty enough to warrant an entire chapter in a book.

When we discuss a dog’s personality, it’s important to note the difference between personality and temperament. Temperament is one’s natural disposition, determined by genes. Personality, as written in chapter three, “encompasses genetically derived behavior along with environmentally influenced behavior, which can, to some degree, be modified.”

Understanding your dog’s personality is infinitely useful. In fact, it’s wise to get to know a dog’s personality before he becomes your dog. Think of it as a chance to choose a relative. And choose carefully. This dog will be your responsibility and a big part of your life for the next 15 years or so.

There are six canine personality types, and any one dog can have up to five of the six types. The only personality types that are exclusive of each other are “nervous” and “sedate.” There’s no such thing as a relaxed, nervous dog.

The six personality types are:

-- hardheaded/stubborn

-- laid-back/sedate

-- excitable/nervous

-- timid/shy

-- responsive

-- aggressive

There are five tests that will help you unravel the mystery of your pup’s personality. The tests and their general purpose are listed below.

More Questions About the Timing of Social Security Checks Q:

I think you covered this issue in a past column. But I’m still confused. I will turn 66 on Aug. 28, 2018. I want to start my Social Security then. And because I know that Social Security checks come one month behind, I understand that the first check I will be due will come in September. So when I sign up for Social Security, do I tell them I want my benefits to begin in August or September?

A:

You tell them you want your benefits to begin in August. You are right that Social Security checks are sent out one month late. In other words, your August payment will be deposited into your bank account in September. But don’t worry about the timing of the delivery of your Social Security check. Just worry about which month you want your Social Security eligibility to begin. And since you want your benefits to start at age 66, and you are 66 in August, then that is the month you tell them you want your benefits to start.

Q:

My mother passed away on March 27, 2018. The Social Security people are now demanding the check that was deposited in April (the March payment) be returned to them. How can that be? We paid her mortgage and other bills with the money taken out of her checking account. I agree that she shouldn’t get the money for the entire month of March.

But why are they tr ying to steal her money for the 27 days she was alive?

A:

The Social Security Administration isn’t trying to steal your mom’s money. They are just following the law. And that law has always said that benefits are not prorated.

That’s actually good news on the front end of someone’s eligibility for benefits. In other words, you get benefits for your whole first month of eligibility, even though you might not be technically eligible for benefits for the whole month. No one ever complains about that.

month. If you were born on the 11th through the 20th, you get paid on the third Wednesday. And if you were born on the 21st through 31st, Social Security sends your check on the fourth Wednesday.

I guess I should have said those delivery dates work as a general rule. Almost all people reading this column will get their Social Security checks as explained above. I can explain why some folks get their benefits on the third of each month. Before the Social Security Administration started staggering the delivery of Social Security checks about 20 years ago, everyone got their benefits on the third day of the month. When they changed the rules, they said that people already getting their checks on that day would continue to do so. So those of you receiving your benefits on the third must have been getting Social Security checks for a very long time.

More than a few women wrote to tell me that they get their benefits on the same day as their husband, corresponding to his birthdate. I can’t really explain that. It might have something to do with a woman getting benefits on a husband’s record and whose Social Security eligibility is tied

But it can be bad news on the tail end of someone’s eligibility for benefits -- in other words, after a beneficiary dies. Of course, the deceased never complains about that, but his or her relatives always do.

For example, the guy who wrote the first question in this column turns 66 on Aug. 28. He will get a Social Security check for August, even though he is 66 for only three days of that month.

That probably makes him happy.

But someday he is going to die. And if that happens to be near the end of a month, his family will have to return the check that is delivered the following month. And I am sure they will be upset about that and gripe about the fact that benefits are not prorated. They will probably never know that when he first started getting Social Security, that lack of proration really helped him.

Sadly, your mother didn’t live the whole month of March. So because benefits are not prorated, you are not due the March payment. But I hope she enjoyed the little bonus she got when she started getting Social Security.

Vegan Does Not Need Fish to be Healthy

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been vegan for 15 years. I avoid sugar, limit salt and have no caffeine. Recently, a pharmacist told me that I will not get proper protein unless I add fish to my diet. However, long ago, my doctor told me that my vegan diet was good and that I should take vitamin B-12 daily, which I have been doing. What are your thoughts on adding fish? -- S.N. ANSWER: I agree with your doctor. A vegan diet can be very healthy, and avoiding sugar in particular helps assure that it is. The issue of adequate protein is brought up frequently, but most Americans consume more than twice the recommended daily allowance of protein.

Plant foods have plenty of protein, and you certainly do not need to eat fish in order to get adequate protein. I think fish can be a healthy part of a diet, but it is not necessary.

Very rarely, kidney function can return even after a prolonged time on dialysis. I have never seen a case, but one study showed two cases per thousand where dialysis could be stopped. The clue that kidney function was returning was that urine output, which normally is scant while on hemodialysis, had increased over time. Unfortunately, 99.8 percent of the time, the kidney failure is permanent. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 62-yearold male, and I have been heavy for most of my life. Over the past 18 months, I have lost a great deal of weight and feel better than I have in years. My issue is where the excess has ended up: just below my belt-line. I know that so-called spot reducing doesn’t work, so I’m at a loss as to how to go about getting rid of this paunch. It’s not above my belt, and it is stubborn. Any ideas? -- T.C. ANSWER: If you keep losing weight, odds are that stubborn fat will gradually go away.

Lusterware Tea Set Shines

Q: Your column is in our local news-

paper each week. I wonder if you could help me. I have a porcelain tea set that is a ser vice for 12. It includes teacups, saucers, sandwich plates, a teapot, a cream pitcher, a sugar bowl and a vase. Enclosed is a picture of my set. Each dish is blue and outlined in black and has an iridescent border. I am guessing it is at least 60 years old. My mother gave it to me, and it originally belonged to her aunt. All the pieces are marked with the words “Made in Japan.”

A:

George Jones and Sons made your cups and saucers. It made earthenware, porcelain and majolica in Staffordshire, England, from 1861 to 1951. Your set was decorated with flow-blue transfer prints; it was also available in red. Designs are engraved on copper plates and then filled with paint. Tissue paper is then applied to the heated plate and removed and pressed on an object. The paper is removed when it’s dry, leaving the design.

Essentially, the design is transferred from the copper plate to an object, thus the name “transfer print.” The English “Abbey” pattern is circa 1790.

Your set of cups and saucer were made around 1901 and would probably be worth $175 to $225.

The iridescent quality is the result of a metallic glaze that is applied during the last firing. Objects that were marked “Made in Japan” were made from 1921 to around 1941. Prior to 1921, pieces were marked with the word “Nippon.” After World War II, from 1947 to 1952, pottery and porcelain were marked “Made in Occupied Japan.”

Lusterware sets made in Japan were in demand from the 1920s till the 1940s. Some of most popular pieces include tea sets, luncheon sets, wall pockets, condiment sets and ashtrays.
