BAGELS :

Vol. XIV Issue 28

• In 1927, Polish baker Harry Lender established the first bagel factory outside New York City, settling in New Haven, Connecticut. In the 1950s, Lender’s son Murray revolutionized the production and distribution of bagels by developing frozen bagels, and supplying to supermarkets. Murray also introduced presliced bagels. • In the early 1960s, inventor Dan Thompson devised the first commercial bagel-making machine. Dan’s father, a Winnipeg, Canada bakery owner, had been working on a machine for decades without success. With Dan’s machine, 200 to 400 bagels could be produced per hour, and traditional hand-shaped bagels quickly disappeared.

Rabbits (from page one) • Although the average rabbit is about the size of a cat -- from 13 to 20 inches in length and 2.5 to 5.5 pounds in weight -- the Checkered giant can weigh over 11 pounds. However, the Flemish giant can grow to more than 13 pounds, and the giant chinchilla rabbit to between 12 and 16 pounds.

severe that it's an ongoing national crisis.

RABBIT DIETS

• Rabbits are herbivores, with their diets including grasses, clover, and frequently vegetables from your garden. As many frustrated gardeners know, they love to feast on carrots, broccoli, green beans and other garden veggies. They might also eat fruits, seeds, roots, buds, and tree bark. They can munch rapidly at 120 times per minute, with 28 teeth to accomplish the feat.

• It all began in 1859, when an Australian landowner ordered 24 gray rabbits imported from Europe to release on his land for sport by K hunting. However, what he received was a mixture of both wild gray rabbits and 1. W domesticated rabbits. The two breeds quickly interbred into a hybrid mixture that multiplied sc at an unprecidented rate. With no natural mo preditors in Australia to keep them in check, se their numbers exploded out of control.

* It was popular British romance author Jilly Cooper who made the following observation: “The male is a domestic animal which, if treated with firmness, can be trained to do most things.” * If you’re like the average human, you blink about 17,000 times every day. * Filmmaker George Lucas is arguably best known for his “Star Wars” franchise, but he also directed “American Graffiti.” During the making of that earlier film he designated each reel of film with an R before the reel’s number, and each instance of dialog was prefixed with a D. At one point during the sound mixing, the sound designer needed to use Reel 2, Dialog 2, and so asked for “R2D2.” Lucas liked the sound of it so much that he used it for the name of a robot character in his later work. * At 6 feet, 4 inches tall, Abraham Lincoln is the tallest president in the history of the United States. * I’d be very surprised if you’d ever heard of Bokassa I, former emperor of the Central African Republic. It’s interesting to note, though, that while he was on trial for infanticide, cannibalism and torture, he commented, “Being head of state is an extremely thankless job.” * If you suffer from ophidiophobia -- and, sadly, many people do -- you may find the following tidbit to be rather unsettling: There are more than 3,000 different species of snakes. * Researchers have discovered that humans aren’t the only ones to imbibe alcohol on a regular basis. It seems that the tiny pen-tailed tree shrew makes a habit of consuming naturally fermented palm flower nectar, which has an alcohol content of 3.8 percent -- comparable to that of Tell them you most beers. saw their ad *** in Tidbits! Thought for the Day: “An intelligent man is sometimes forced to be drunk to spend time with his fools.” -- Ernest Hemingway (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

An Incredibly Easy Way to Save Money Shopping Online

When it’s time to pay, I don’t use a credit card. Instead, I use my Raise gift card.

Everyday Today, I’m going to walk you through the basic steps of an incredibly easy way to save CHEAPSKATE money shopping online, using a recent purchase ®

by Mary Hunt I made as an example.

From time to time, I will stop by Chicos. com to check out new arrivals. I’ve been looking for a jacket that would be appropriate for speaking engagements, and I must be very picky because for weeks I haven’t even seen one that might be a good candidate. On one particular day, something caught my eye, a jacket that just might be perfect, except for the $99 price. It’s available in my size and color preference, so I put it into my shopping cart. And I leave the site. (I’ve learned that unless I need an item immediately, putting a few days between the time I put it in the shopping cart and when I actually check out may turn up any number of incentives to encourage me across the finish line.) About a week later, I returned and bingo! The jacket was still in my shopping cart but with a new reduced price of $41.99. But I didn’t buy it. Not yet.

Raise is a site that resells gift cards at a discounted rate. I can find gift cards for just about any store, available to use almost immediately. I never pay face value or a fee of any kind for gift cards at Raise. I was suspicious at first, but I’ve confirmed that this is legitimate, legal and completely above board. My discount is simply Raise sharing its affiliate income with me, and it’ll share with you, too. Several weeks earlier, I’d purchased a Chico’s gift card at Raise for 26 percent off its face value and been holding onto it in anticipation of this kind of deal on a great jacket. But wait; there’s more: I bought that Raise gift card with a credit card that gives me 2 percent cash back. Considering all that I saved and earned in this process, the $99 jacket cost me $27.53 out of pocket, and that includes tax. That works out to 72 percent discount and free shipping. Upon the jacket’s arrival, if it isn’t right, I won’t be stuck. I will return it to the Chico’s store near me (I’ll run in and out really fast) and get a full refund back to my Chico’s gift card. While there are lots of ways to save money shopping online, here’s my best and favorite method in a nutshell: Start at Ebates; never pay retail price; and when you find a great deal, pay with a discounted Raise gift card.

Instead, I headed to Ebates.com and signed into my account. Ebates is a rebate site, and because I’ve signed up, I can click on any of the store links (there are hundreds including favorites like Amazon, Old Navy, Chico’s, For more information plus links JCPenney, Lowe’s, Groupon), make a purchase ADVERTISING PROOF to the resources mentioned above, go to and get money back -- 2 to 10 percent of the TUES., MAY 15 EverydayCheapskate.com/onlineshopping. Some months you will produce more energy than you need, and you will get “credited” for it. Then, when you need more than your system is producing, you will use those credits. If the amount of electricity you use over an entire year is about the same as your previous year (that’s what your system is based on), your electric usage bill to SCE at the end of 12 months should be nothing. It’s even possible they will owe you some money! Of course, that assumes you select an efficient panel like SunPower so your system can be designed to offset 100% of your energy needs.

Dog Talk with Uncle Matty By Matthew Margolis

Keeping Canines Cool As summer heats up and several states turn to burn bans and water rationing to combat prolonged droughts, dog owners must pay careful attention to keeping their canines cool. Some dogs, particularly the snub-nosed breeds like pugs, bulldogs, boxers and Lhasa apsos, will make this easy on us and simply revert to air-conditioned hibernation until temperatures outside relax. Others, no matter the climate, will not forsake their beloved backyard. It is with these stalwarts in mind -- guardians of the yard, lovers of the swimming pool, keepers of the garden -- that I offer the following guidance. Limit summer walks to early morning or late evening, and keep them relatively short. As a general rule, if the sidewalk is too hot for your bare feet, it’s too hot for your dog’s paw pads. If for some reason your dog is not allowed to luxuriate indoors, he’ll need a covered shady spot to retreat to at any given time of day and cool, fresh drinking water available at all times. The ideal outdoor water bowl is weighted to avoid spilling, and it’s smart to have two or more bowls per dog set out. Many dogs are natural swimmers, but don’t set Fido loose in the pool (or lake or river) until you know two things with certainty: 1) He really does know how to swim, and 2) He knows how to get out of the pool. Even great swimmers will tire and drown if they aren’t taught how to exit a swimming pool. And if your pool has no steps and no shallow end, your dog has no exit and no resting place, so you’ll need to keep it covered. But it’s not just dogs and pools that don’t always make for happy endings. Doggie doors are installed to give a dog free access to both yard and house. But they also give small children free access to yard and house. If you have all four -- pool, doggie door, dog and child -- make sure both dog and child know how to swim and how to get in and out of the pool unassisted. Otherwise, keep the pool covered or the doggie door immobilized, or both. Easier, cleaner, safer options for utilizing water to cool your dog down are outdoor misters and wading pools. Misters are essentially fans that Casey's Corner: Turn to page 10

So You've Figured Out Your Cellphone? Now Step Up to a Tablet What do you get after you've had your cellphone long enough to feel comfortable using it for all the basic functions you need, but you’re not feeling quite ready yet to be jumping into a full-size computer? Chances are a tablet would be the ideal next step for you. Tablets are like oversized cellphones in their capabilities, except that they can do a whole lot more for you. With a tablet you can check your email and send replies, watch videos, jot down a reminder to yourself, make a grocery list, send pictures - and in some tablet models take pictures, check the weather, play games and look around the Internet. Some tablets have drawing capabilities with a special pen. If you have Wi-Fi in your house, a tablet can connect to it without incurring additional fees to connect to the phone carrier.

VA Slashes Backlog of Claims Appeals The Department of Veterans Affairs has announced a major reduction in the number of disability claim appeals that had piled up. This year it managed to clear 53,000 decisions, which is 86 percent more than the 28,000 the VA cleared during the same time last year. Its goal is to review 81,000 claims by the end of September.

I’d like to be sure you have all the right information. A nuclear stress test uses a radioactive dye to look at blood flow to the heart. Although they are very accurate, like almost every test, they can be mistaken. This is why your cardiologist ordered the cardiac catheterization -- the best test we have to look for blockages in the arteries. The risk in a cardiac catheterization, also called an angiogram, is low. If there are no blockages, that information is helpful and might allow your cardiologist to have you stop some medications.

It’s not unreasonable, given your medical history, to assume that there is a blockage that might need medical treatment. Can a Debt Collector Take My Social Security Benefits? DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: Can my Social Security benefits be garnished if I have some outstanding debts? I just turned 62 and would like to start collecting my retirement benefits, but want to be clear about this before I apply. --Worried Retiree Dear Worried: Whether your Social Security benefits are garnishable or not depends on whom you owe. Banks and other financial creditors, for example, can’t touch your Social Security checks. But if Uncle Sam is collecting on a debt, for example back taxes, some of your benefits are fair game. Here’s what you should know.

Government Garnishment If, however, you owe money to Uncle Sam, it’s a very different story. The federal government can garnish a portion of your Social Security benefits for repayment of several types of debts, including federal income taxes, federal student loans, state-ordered child support and alimony, nontax debt owed to other federal agencies, defaulted federal home loans and certain civil penalties. (If you receive SSI, those benefits cannot be garnished under any circumstance.)

You also need to make sure you’re not missing out on any financial assistance programs. The National Council on Aging’s website (BenefitsCheckup.org) contains a database of more than 2,500 federal, state and local programs that can help seniors with prescription drug costs, health care, food, utilities, and other basic needs. The site will help you locate programs that you may be eligible for and will show you how to apply.

How much can actually be taken depends on the type of debt you owe. In most situations, the government can pull 15 percent of your benefits to cover your debt, but under the Debt Collection Improvement Act of 1996, it must leave you at least $750 each month. That is, unless the levy is for federal income taxes. In that case, the government isn’t required to leave $750 behind.

*** Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of “The Savvy Senior” book.

The other exception is for child support or alimony payments. Depending on your state laws, the court may be able to take half of your benefits or more to pay your obligations to your children or ex-spouse.

Also included with the mark are the words “Lord’s Supper -- Copyrighted -First Edition -- Warranted 25 Karat Gold.” The plate is 10 inches in diameter and decorated with a scene of Jesus and the Apostles at the Last Supper. Collectors Dive in for Toy Plane Q:

This metal toy airplane belonged to my dad in the 1960s. It is in excellent condition. The wings are red, and the fuselage is blue. Both wings fold up. The rubber landing gear is retractable. The canopy over the cockpit slides open. The U.S. Navy Stars and Bars wing decals are perfect. And the nose propeller is intact. The wingspan is over 11 inches. From the nose to the tail, it measures 9 inches. And the plane stands 2 and 1/2 inches tall. Marked on the inside of one of the wings are the words “Hubley Kiddie Toys -Lancaster -- PA -- Made in the U.S.A. -- 495.” We plan to keep it in our family and would like to know more about it. Is it a collectible, and does it have any value?

Sanders Manufacturing Company was founded in 1918.

A:

Sanders Manufacturing Company was a decorating firm located in Nashville, Tennessee. It was founded in 1918 by J. Boyle Sanders. Many of the blanks Sanders used were made by Limoges China Company and Canonsburg Pottery. Sanders plates were decorated with advertising, religious, inspirational and fraternal organization themes, or special orders. Your plate was made around 1950. Unfortunately, there is not a big demand for Sanders Manufacturing Company plates decorated with religious themes. Other Sanders plates depicting the Last Supper can be found selling on the internet for anywhere between $10 and $30. * * *

Diecast Hubley Kiddie Toys were produced during the 1960s and 70s, and are collectible.

A:

You have a Hubley Manufacturing Kiddie Toy diecast toy airplane. It is a U.S. Navy fighter/bomber. John Hubley founded his company in 1894 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. It made cast-iron doorstops, toys and dogs. In 1930, it began making diecast iron toys including motorcycles, trucks, tractors, cars, planes and steam shovels. The “Kiddie Toy” line was produced from 1960 to the 1970s. Hubley passed through several owners and is no longer in business. Your toy airplane is a popular collectible and was made around 1960. In outstanding condition it would probably be worth at least $90, or more to the right buyer. ***

Rabbits (from page page 3) all greenery and wiping out production of the nation's farm crops. Although the rabbits were being killed by the millions in desperation, it was impossible to get ahead of their growth. It was estimated that Australia's rabbit population at one point had exceeded 600 million! • When hundreds of miles screen fences proved ineffective for confining the rabbits, the Australian government finally released a toxin called myxomotosis, a fatal disease which affects only rabbits. The method worked to kill off the majority of the population, but the remaining rabbits eventually bred their numbers back to over 200 million. Today, the disease works only on about 40 percent of the nuisance bunnies. In many areas of Australia today it is illegal to own even a domesticated pet rabbit, and in Queensland the on-the-spot penalty for doing so is a merciless $44,000 fine. • Baby domestic rabbits are born furless and won’t open their eyes until they are about two weeks old. Their average lifespan is around five to eight years. First-time rabbit owners should be aware that keeping a rabbit outdoors will cut his life span in half, with risks of extreme heat and cold, illness, and predators. Even if a predator can’t chew its way inside the rabbit hutch, the bunny can actually die of a heart attack just from the extreme stress of seeing the predator clawing to get in. • Do you know your rabbit terminology? Baby rabbits are known as kits or kittens. Males are bucks and females are does. The original name for babies was “rabbit,” with adults being called “coneys.” “Bunny” doesn’t refer to a baby rabbit, it’s just a term of affection – there’s no difference between a bunny and a rabbit. However, a rabbit and a hare are not the same. Hares are larger and faster, and have longer ears and feet than rabbits. They are born covered with hair, with their eyes open, and they can run within just a few minutes of birth. • For those who may consider adding rabbit to their menu for din-din, it has several benefits. It’s all white meat and contains the least amount of fat among other meats, with half the calories of pork. Its sodium content is also less than other meats, and it’s nearly cholesterol-free. • Have you ever seen a rabbit jump in the air, jerking and twisting its body? That energetic activity is known as a “binky,” and it simply means the rabbit is happy! 

Hybrid Wins

When I’m on the course with a student who’s facing a long shot from the rough, they typically reach for their 3 wood without hesitation. This particular problem is magnified when trying to carry a water hazard or bunker. It seems that the yardage takes precedence over the lie in most of the decisions. Unfortunately, when it comes to a battle between the 3 wood and a hybrid…. the hybrid wins. Due to a poor lie in most of these cases, a low lofted (14 degrees), long shafted, high center of gravity clubhead makes it difficult to get a clean hit or much height on the shot. The hybrid, with its shorter shaft, higher loft (17 degrees), and lower center of gravity, gives average swing speeds a chance to hit pro-like shots.

Play these difficult lies more like an iron shot as well, with a more descending strike intention. So the next time the ball sits down in the rough, pass over the 3 wood and grab PROOF that hybrid ADVERTISING instead. It might save you a few strokes your Finalnext Changes DUE: 5:00 round.
