• Keeping a satellite in orbit is tricky, because it has to balance the gravity that wants to pull it back to Earth against the centrifugal force that wants to pull it away from the orbit and send it flying off into outer space. All this is carefully monitored and controlled by engineers. • But zombie satellites have exhausted their fuel and lost contact with controllers, allowing them to continue orbiting aimlessly. When they collide, they splinter off into thousands of bits of space junk, with every piece becoming highvelocity missles that are dangerous to other orbiting craft. • Trackers have identified over 21,000 pieces of space debris larger than four inches (10 cm) in diameter, about the size of a softball. Objects this size are big enough to rip a spacecraft apart, but there are thousands of smaller bits in orbital paths that are also potential collision hazards. NASA can detect objects as small as two inches (5 cm) but those smaller aren't visible. • It’s been estimated that between 100 and 150 metric tons of space junk enter Earth’s atmosphere every year. China is responsible for 40% of space junk; the U.S. for 27.5%; Russia for 25.5% and the rest comes from various other space programs. • At least one piece of space junk reenters Earth’s atmosphere every day, including one zombie satellite or rocket stage each week. Most of it burns up in the atmosphere and the rest is likely to harmlessly land in the ocean. • Thirteen different space agencies track space debris and coordinate information through a networking program called the Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordination Committee. But there is presently little anyone can do to control the ongoing space junk problem, aside from advising evasive maneuvers. □

The loss of the Iridium 33 knocked out cell phone service for many and it took weeks for a new satellite to take its place. • A piece of the debris from this collision nearly impacted the International Space Station (ISS) in November of 2014. A craft carrying cargo had just docked at the space station to deliver a load of supplies when the warning of an imminent collision came through. Controllers in France fired the thrusters of the cargo ship, which acted like a tugboat and pulled the ISS out of harm’s way. BILL PETER LEGRAVE, talks about:

“ROLFING: And Back Pain” ®

People often decide to be Rolfed because of pain in the muscular-skeletal system, often in the back, shoulders and neck. While Rolfing® is not designed as a system of treatment for illness, it can often be helpful in these situations as it brings the body into better alignment. A Rolfed body is more vertically balanced, with the leg more directly under the torso for better support, the pelvis less tipped forward, the chest lifted and symmetrical, and the head sitting directly over the neck and shoulders. In this alignment, chronic aches and pains often clear up as the body is positioned and moves in the most comfortable way.

Exploring the Sun (from page one) are violent explosions of magnetic forces. MAGNETIC FIELDS

• Inside the Sun, atoms are stripped of their electrons, making the atoms ionized. As the free-range electrons move through this ionized gas, magnetic fields are generated. The rotation of the Sun as it turns on its axis stirs up currents of gas in the interior, causing different magnetic fields to move about and join with each other, like streams flowing into a river. • The immense heat at the core of the Sun causes these rivers of magnetized gas to rise to the surface and shoot 100,000 miles upward, generating a large and complex magnetic field. • When you sprinkle iron filings around a bar magnet, the filings arrange themselves along a set of magnetic lines that form a donut-shape. These are called field lines. A compass always points north because it’s following the field lines of the magnetic net around Earth. The Sun has millions of field lines that extend high above the surface, looping upward and back down in a chaotic and ever-changing display of magnetism in action. SUNSPOTS AND SOLAR FLARES

the peak of the cycle, the Sun may have over 100 sunspots, but at the minimum, there may be none. When Schwabe published his results in 1859, scientists realized that the sunspot cycle coincided exactly with peak magnetic activity on Earth. • So at the surface, tangled field lines are coiled, compressed, and under tremendous tension as they are unable to expand. The sunspot grows in a convoluted mess as the pressure builds. Finally the field lines break free, releasing a huge amount of energy in what is called a solar flare. Solar flares hurl high-energy photons and subatomic particles into space at up to five million miles per hour.

Page 3

than that, followed all the way up to gamma rays. Solar flares and CMEs send a huge flood of all of these energies outward.

Q

• Every photon particle that spews out of a solar flare or CME carries so much energy that it can alter any atom it hits, stripping off the atom’s electron and ionizing it. If a photon hits the metal of a satellite, the metal is ionized, creating a strong pulse of magnetic energy which damages electronic components inside the satellite in the same way a magnet can damage your computer’s hard drive or ruin your phone.

* Leona Woods was the only woman physicist on the team that built the world’s first nuclear reactor as part of the Manhattan Project. She became a mother during the project, but hid her pregnancy as not to miss work. Afterward, as a professor, she authored more than 200 papers in physics and astrophysics. * A 10-second French kiss spreads around 80 million bacteria between the two smoochers. * Director Michael Bay (“Transformers”) traced his interest in action films to when he attached firecrackers to a toy train and filmed the ensuing fiery disaster with his mother’s 8 mm camera. The fire department was called, and Bay was grounded. * The African country of Zambia entered the Space Race in the 1960s with a plan to visit Mars and convert aliens to Christianity. The plan unraveled when one of the “Afronauts” got pregnant, another pulled out to join a local dance group and a third went missing. * Libyan revolutionary Moammar Gadhafi had a serious obsession with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, showering her with over $200,000 in gifts and having a famous local composer write a song for her called “Black Flower in the White House.” * As if job interviews weren’t stressful enough, some notably head-scratching questions asked by employers include “If Germans were the tallest people in the world, how would you prove it?” (HewlettPackard), “Why is a tennis ball fuzzy?” (Xerox), and “Are you exhaling warm air?” (Walker Marketing) *** Thought for the Day: “Few people know how to take a walk. The qualifications are endurance, plain clothes, old shoes, an eye for nature, good humor, vast curiosity, good speech, good silence and nothing too much.” -- Ralph Waldo Emerson

I’m right there, front and center on Super Bowl Sunday, cheering on the underdog, breathlessly waiting for the next classic commercial to see while enjoying some decadent party food. Today, I want to share with you my most favorite, best-ever party dips. No one would consider any of these to be healthy food choices, and for that I do not apologize. you’re interested in emergency battery backup, there are rebates available from SCE, and if you install a battery at the same time you install your solar system, you can possibly take the 26% Federal Tax Credit on both. The rebate money steps down as each tier gets used, so the earlier the better on that as well! In short, it’s a smarter decision for you to have your solar system installed sooner rather than later!

Renova Energy is an award-winning local company founded in 2006 that designs and installs commercial and residential solar and advanced battery systems. Then I read that the new film will be set in the 1970s, and I have to admit, I’m a little more hopeful. As for the plot, according to Entertainment Weekly, Ralphie, now a father, “returns to the house on Cleveland Street to deliver his kids a magical Christmas like the one he had growing up.” He greets old friends and pays tribute to the passing of his “old man.” Billingsley is no stranger to Hollywood since his child acting days. He’s become a successful director and producer. He directed the 2009 comedy film “Couples Retreat,” starring Vince Vaughn. A bit of trivia, according to IMDb.com, Billingsley and Vaughn became best buddies when they both appeared in the “CBS Schoolbreak Special: The Fourth Man.” *** Q: Is the actress who now plays Taylor on “The Bold and the Beautiful” the same

Letter from a reader: “My well-mannered German shepherd passed away last July, so I adopted Wile E, a Husky mix, from a shelter. His inhome behavior is perfect. He is well behaved in the house with no exceptions. He does not give kisses to anyone, but he shows affection in other ways. “The problem with this dog is on walks or when he is outside in front of the house -- for example, when we open the garage door to move a car in or out. Under these circumstances, if there is another dog around, he goes nuts. He is not aggressive toward these dogs, but he goes wild and barks, pulls and gets right in the face of the other dog. “His other problem is with vehicles. He used to get excited about trucks when we were walking. I think it was due to the fact that trucks and SUVs have noisy tires that set him off. He pulls and wants to chase them. I am afraid of what would happen if he found his way out of our home unsupervised.” My comments: There are two problems here. The lack of proper socialization with other dogs I’ll save for another time in order to focus on a very serious problem. The No. 1 cause of death for dogs is cancer. No. 2 is getting struck by a car. I know six people, personally, whose dogs were killed by a moving vehicle. They have all had a hard time dealing with feelings of guilt. One told me he watched his dog being hit: “He looked at me right before it happened.” That’s a tough one to get over. Dogs that get hit by cars almost always share a profile: They are untrained. They have a habit of escaping through the front door as it’s opened. They’re allowed to hang out with their owners in fenceless front yards. What makes this fate even sadder is that it is an almost entirely preventable cause of death. As with most problems, the first line of de-

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

Repeat After Me: ‘SSI Is Not Social Security’ If I had a million dollars, I’d buy commercial time at the upcoming Super Bowl and run an ad that says, in big bold letters, “SSI is not Social Security.” I have written dozens of past columns about this topic. But I’ve just got to do so again. It seems to me that just about everyone in this country confuses the Supplemental Security Income program with the Social Security program. To clarify, let’s start with some background. I’m sure everybody knows what Social Security is. You get a Social Security number, you work, you pay Social Security taxes, and one day you, and possibly some of your dependents, collect Social Security retirement benefits. Or you become disabled before reaching retirement age and you, and possibly some of your dependents, get Social Security disability benefits. Or you die and your widow or widower and/or minor children collect Social Security survivor benefits. But only a small percentage of Americans really know what Supplemental Security Income is. To introduce it, here is a short history lesson. Back before the early 1970s, there were hundreds of different welfare programs in the country. Sometimes states administered welfare programs. Other times, counties had their own welfare programs. And in some places, cities or other jurisdictions had their own welfare programs. It was a mess. Some officials in the Nixon administration had a good idea. They decided to federalize and standardize this hodgepodge of welfare programs into one national program. But then they had two bad ideas. The first bad idea: They gave this new program to the Social Security Administration to run. On the one hand, I suppose it made sense. The SSA had a network of field offices around the country, and it had the computer infrastructure necessary to manage a big, national government benefits program. On the other hand, they messed up a nice, clean government operation used to dealing mostly with grandpas and grandmas and saddled it with the task of running a big, messy welfare system. And their second bad idea was the name. Some people somewhere in the Nixon administration decided to call the new program Supplemental Security Income. I understand what they were trying to do. They wanted to remove the negative connotations of the word “welfare” from the minds of potential program beneficiaries. But this act of political correctness has led to problems ever since. So, they called the new program Supplemental Security Income, and they gave the program to the Social Security Administration to run. And almost everyone back then in the 1970s, and almost everyone still today, got the impression that Supplemental Security Income is some kind of supplemental Social Security benefit. It’s not. SSI is a federal welfare program that has absolutely nothing to do with Social Security other than the fact that it happens to be managed by the Social Security Administration. SSI payments are funded out of general tax revenues -NOT Social Security taxes. Gosh, how I wish they would have called

Page 11

someone who inherits $100,000 doesn’t need welfare. I’m not a real expert on the SSI program, but you may be able to set up something called a “special needs trust” that lets you keep your SSI checks. Those may be the “hoops” you are trying to jump through. And here is one final tidbit that further shows how these two programs can get confused. The Social Security disability program is Q: In a recent column, you wrote that frequently referred to as SSDI, which stands for people getting Social Security Income are getting welfare. I beg to differ. Social Security is Social Security disability insurance. And the SSI disability program is usually called SSID. NOT welfare. How could you say that? In a past column, you said that someone getting disability benefits (and this is a direct quote) “could inherit a million dollars and still be eligible for disability benefits.” I recently inherited a lot less than that (about $100,000), and it got me into all kinds of trouble with my SSI disability. I’m jumping through lots of hoops now tr ying to keep my benefits.

Home Modification Tips for ‘Aging-in-Place’ DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: My wife and I would like to make some affordable changes to our home so we can remain living here independently for as long as possible. Can you recommend some good resources that can help us determine everything we should be thinking about? -- Getting Up There Dear Getting: Many older adults, like you and your wife, want to remain in their own home for as long as possible to maintain the comfort, convenience and independence of your day-to-day living. But being able to do so may depend on how easily you can continue to maneuver about in your living space as you age and possibly acquire some physical limitations. Here are some helpful resources you can turn to for ideas about the different types of features and improvements that will make your house safer and more convenient as you grow older. Home Evaluation A good first step in making your home more age-friendly is to conduct an honest assessment. Go through your house, roomby-room, looking for problem areas like potential tripping or slipping hazards, as well as areas that are hard to access and difficult to maintain. To help with this, there are several organizations that have aging-in-place checklists that point out potential problems in each area of the home, along with modification suggestions and solutions. For example, Rebuild Together has a two-page “Safe at Home Checklist” that’s created in partnership with the Administration on Aging and the American Occupational Therapy Association. Go to AOTA.org and search for “Rebuilding Together Safe at Home Checklist.”

An occupational therapist, or OT, can evaluate the challenges and shortcomings of your home for aging in place, recommend design and modification solutions, and introduce you to products and services to help you make improvements. To find an OT in your area, check with your physician, health insurance provider or local hospital, or seek recommendations from family and friends. Many health insurance providers, including Medicare, will pay for a home assessment by an OT if prescribed by your doctor. However, they will not cover the physical upgrades to the home. Victorian Era Clock Is a Classic Q:

I purchased this clock about 50 years ago and would like to know more about its histor y and value. Marked on a label on the back are the words “Sharon -- Prize Awarded Paris Expo 1878.” The case is oak, and it stands about 17 inches tall. It has a “June 18, 1882,” patent date. It is in good working condition.

Your stein was made around 1960 by Albert Jacob Thewalt Factory. Thewalt has made steins in Hohr, Grenzhausen, Germany, since 1893. Objects marked “Western Germany” were made between 1949 and 1990. Your stein would probably be worth $50 to $100.

Thewalt Factory has been located in Germany since 1893.

*** Q: I have a question regarding a Hummel figurine that my wife inherited. It is a figurine of a boy on a sled holding a lantern, and there is a Christmas tree aboard behind him. It is marked “Goebel -- 396-1-- W. Germany” and “M. I. Hummel” on the base. The overall height is 6 inches, and it is in mint condition. What is its value?

A: The Goebel mark you described shows

your Hummel figurine was made between 1972 and 1979. “Ride into Christmas” is the name of your figurine and it is the larger of the two sizes available. Many Hummel figurines are not commanding as high of values as in the past. Internet prices for your figurine are in the $175 to $275 range.

Ansonia Clock Co. was in business from 1850 to 1929.

A: Ansonia Clock Co. made your Victorian shelf clock. Anson Phelps, along with clock manufacturers, Franklin C. Andrews and Theodore Terry, formed Ansonia Clock Co. in 1850. They became one of the major clock manufacturers in the United States in the early 19th century. By 1929, they went into receivership and sold their holdings to Soviet Russia. “Sharon” is the name of the design of your clock. It is an 8-day strike and has a classical design with pilasters on either side. The words “Prize Awarded Paris Expo 1878” refers to an award given to the company rather than to your clock. Originally, it sold for around $8. Today, your circa 1882 clock would probably be worth between $400 and $500. *** Q: The enclosed mark is on the bottom of a stein that was purchased in Germany. Also included with the mark are the words “Western Germany.” The stein is decorated with scenes in relief of people drinking, has a pewter lid and stands about 5 inches tall. I

On Feb. 13, 1633, Italian philosopher, astronomer and mathematician Galileo Galilei arrives in Rome to face charges of heresy for advocating Copernican theory, which holds that the Earth revolves around the Sun. The Copernican theory conflicted with the teachings of the powerful Roman Catholic Church. On Feb. 8, 1936, University of Chicago halfback Jay Berwanger, the first Heisman Trophy winner, is picked No. 1 overall in the NFL draft. However, Berwanger never played for any NFL team because he had too many demands, which teams refused to meet. Instead the college star became a foam rubber salesman. On Feb. 9, 1942, the largest and most luxurious ocean liner on the seas at that time, France’s Normandie, catches fire while in the process of being converted for military use by the United States. It was to become a troop transport but ended up at the bottom of New York Harbor. On Feb. 7, 1962, President John F. Kennedy issues an executive order broadening the United States’ restrictions on trade with Cuba. The embargo, which effectively restricts all trade between Cuba and the United States, has lapsed several times, notably under Presidents Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama. On Feb. 11, 1970, at the Kagoshima Space Center in Japan, the Ohsumi, Japan’s first satellite, is successfully launched into an orbit around Earth. The achievement made Japan the world’s fourth space power, after the Soviet Union in 1957, the United States in 1958, and France in 1965. On Feb. 10, 1996, after three hours, world chess champion Garry Kasparov loses the first game of a six-game match against Deep Blue, an IBM computer. Kasparov was ultimately victorious when he bested Deep Blue with three wins and two ties and took home the $400,000 prize. On Feb. 12, 2002, former Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic goes on trial at The Hague, Netherlands, on charges of genocide and war crimes in Bosnia, Croatia and Kosovo. The trial ended without a verdict when Milosevic was found dead from an apparent heart attack in his prison cell.

High altitude satellites are built to sail through the nearvacuum of space, so when they suddenly are surrounded by an unaccustomed atmosphere, they are slowed down, their orbital speed drops, they descend into even thicker layers of atmosphere, and the problem compounds until they fall to earth. This is what doomed Skylab which fell to Earth in 1979.

• With the Earth’s magnetic safety net overwhelmed, the energy of the CME follows any path it can find, frying electrical wires, transformers, generators, computer components, communication systems, pipelines, capacitors, semiconductors, radars, radios, aircraft parts, sensors, and so forth. One such CME in March of 1989 took down the entire power grid of Quebec, leaving three million people without power for days. • In the unlikely event that a stronger CME were ever to strike the Earth head-on, rather than the glancing blow delivered to Quebec, it's conceivable that it could take down the electrical grid for entire countries, continents, or even an entire hemisphere, requiring years, if not decades, to rebuild. However, Tidbits suggests that there are certainly more realistic concerns to keep folks awake at night than stressing over remote possibilities such as this. □

Resist The Roll All Rights Reserved

The backswing relies upon many moving parts, but owes a lot of its consistency and control to the ankles. The back foot and ankle can be the cornerstone upon which proper body pivot and weight shift is built upon. Many amateurs suffering from a “rolling ankle” which implies that the ankle and foot lose support in the backswing by rolling to the outside of the foot’s support. Once the ankle gives, the knee and hip are sure to follow. The rolling and bending of the leg make it difficult to control the body’s height, and inhibits shifting weight correctly in the forward swing.
