The site for the event was the ancient capital of the Persian Empire, Persepolis, whose oldest remains date to 515 B.C. Preparations began with the expansion of the local airport and the construction of better roads leading to the historic ruins. The area was cleared of snakes and scorpions. Thousands of trees, shrubs, and flowers were brought in and planted. Over 50,000 songbirds were imported from Europe, but most died from the desert heat and lack of water.

French architects and interior decorators designed a city of 50 tents positioned next to the ancient ruins. Each tent had two bedrooms, two bathrooms, an office, and a salon. One tent was given to each nation attending, with each one outfitted with a hand-made tapestry that depicted whichever head of state was staying there. Over 23 miles (37 km) of silk was used in the construction of the tents. The Shah had two modern hotels built in the city of Shiraz to accommodate the less important guests and media personnel. Each hotel had 150 rooms.

Evening entertainment included an incredible fireworks show, equal to none ever before seen. A sound-and-light show transmitted through hundreds of hidden loudspeakers and projectors instilled the message that although Iran was faithful to ancient traditions, it had transcended its past to become a modern and powerful nation.

The total cost of the party has been estimated at $17 million in 1979 dollars ($65 million today), which worked out to about $22,000 per guest ($85,000 today).

Many activists and outspoken students were arrested months before the party so they wouldn’t hold protests and cause trouble. But on the sidelines, a cleric named Ayatollah Khomeini publicly criticized the Shah for his extravagance, calling it “the devil’s festival” and complaining that while he fed world leaders prime steak and stuffed peacock, his own Iranian citizens were living in utter squalor and starving. Dissention blossomed, and revolution fomented. By 1979, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi had been overthrown.

The tent city the Shah built remained in place until it was looted following the revolution. Today the ruins of Persepolis are still a tourist attraction, but only the steel skeletons of the tent structures are left to remind travelers of the self-conceit, vanity, and shameless excesses that brought down a world leader. □

PATIO FURNITURE RESTORE • REFINISH • REPAIR

At the center of the massive tent city, the main tent served as the banquet hall with a serpentine table 75 yards (70 m) long. More than 120 expert seamstresses were used to carefully embroider the ornate tablecloth, which took six months to complete. ADVERTISING

In a series of 10 sessions, Rolfing® actually changes the way your body is structured. You become straighter, taller, more graceful, flexible and free-moving. Possibly many aches and pains will disappear. How does this actually happen?

ROLFING: How Does it Work? ®

We manipulate connective tissue called fascia, a type of body tissue that holds the body together and gives it shape. Fascial planes shape broad areas of the body. Dr. Rolf’s discovery was that if you put certain kinds of pressure on fascia, the shape of the tissue will change in a lasting way. She worked with a very firm level of pressure. Since then, we have found that lighter pressure combined with your movement makes the body reshaping occur quicker.

After much experimenting, she came up with a jiggly product she thought would be a perfect side dish or fruity dessert serving, and gave it the name Jell-O. The couple trade-marked the name and introduced four flavors, strawberry, raspberry, orange, and lemon. • Struggling to keep their cough syrup company up and going, the Waits didn’t have the experience or the capital needed to effectively market their new product. A: When Tom Cruise was cast as Jack Reacher a decade ago in the movie of the same title, fans of the novels balked. Isn’t Jack Reacher 6 feet 5, they asked? Even Lee Child, the author of the novels, expressed concern that the 5 foot 7 Cruise wasn’t what he envisioned. The movie did well enough to justify a sequel four years Alan Ritchson later, and in 2018 a stars in “Reacher” deal was signed to take the character in a new direction in the form of a series. According to TV Guide, Reacher “is fond of staring down his adversaries and letting his imposing frame do the intimidating.” Actor Alan Ritchson will now assume the big shoes of Reacher. DC Universe fans might recognize him as Arthur Curry/ Aquaman in the “Smallville” series and as Hank Hall/Hawk in “Titans.” “Reacher” will premiere on Amazon’s Prime Video beginning Feb. 4 and co-stars Willa Fitzgerald (“Younger”) and Malcolm Goodwin (“iZombie”). As for Cruise, don’t worry, he’s still gainfully employed. He’s filming his eighth “Mission Impossible” film and has the sequel to “Top Gun”

Recently, while I was out training a client’s dog, I became involved in an incident with another dog. It was as preventable as the deaths by car I covered last week. I don’t say that to place blame. I say it to inform, to hopefully prevent it from happening again. While I was working with my client’s dog, I saw a woman get out of her car with her puppy, who was on a slip leash. Not two minutes later, that same woman was running down the street screaming bloody murder. She had fastened her pup’s leash to a chair outside of a juice bar. She stepped inside to get a juice. Moments later, a motorcycle drove by. The sound of the loud motor scared the dog, who flipped the chair, slipped out of the leash and was gone in seconds. In seconds. I helped the woman look for her dog, a fourmonth-old puppy, but we had no luck. I’ve since talked to her by phone, and the pup still has not turned up. In addition to her own despair, she had to explain what happened to her three young children. It’s not like this woman is the first person to tie her dog up for a minute while they run inside for something -- a coffee, a gallon of milk, to mail a letter or even for a quick lunch. People do this all the time. But simply being common practice doesn’t make it smart. Any number of things can happen when you leave your dog unattended on a public street. For one, he can vanish. That’s right -- dognappings. Most passersby aren’t paying attention to who tied which dog to which post. It’s so easy for someone to simply untie a dog and walk away, in hopes that the neighborhood will soon be plastered with “Lost Dog -- Reward” signs. Need more reasons? Being tied up and left in a strange place is taxing to the nervous system of many dogs. Tethered dogs are more likely to bite

Q: We have hired some maids to clean

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

Maids and Nannies and Social Security Sometimes I think my wife and I are the last middle-class couple in the country who haven’t hired a maid to clean the house. I know we are the last couple in our neighborhood who are “maidless.” Every week, up and down our block, I see maids pulling up to houses, getting out their vacuums and buckets and other cleaning gear, and spending a couple of hours or so making our neighbors’ houses gleam. Meanwhile, my wife and I run our fingers across dusty tabletops and windowsills and wonder if we should be doing the same. Actually, this past Christmas, I seriously considered hiring a maid service as a gift for my wife. Although, in truth, it would have been a gift to myself, because I’m the one who straps on the apron once every week or two and dusts and gets down on my hands and knees to scrub the kitchen and bathroom floors. My wife does the vacuuming and cleans the sinks and toilets. Anyway, I finally decided that even though we are in our mid-70s, we could continue with these biweekly household chores. Besides, some of the maids I see in our neighborhood don’t look like they need the money. A couple of them drive much nicer cars than we have! But all that got me to thinking about a column I wrote a long time ago about hiring maids and nannies and other household help and how it relates to Social Security. I found it, “dusted it off” (couldn't resist the pun), and am presenting it here again today.

Q: We are going to hire a nanny to help care for our two small children. We have heard different opinions about whether we will have to deduct Social Security taxes from the wages we will be paying this person. Can you please clarify this? A: I’m a retired Social Security guy. I know

all about the output side of the program (Social Security benefits), but not much about the input side of the ledger (Social Security taxes). This is actually a question for the Internal Revenue Service. The IRS is responsible for all tax matters, including the payment of Social Security taxes. But I know enough about the issue to get you thinking in the right direction. Whether or not you have to deduct Social Security taxes from your nanny’s pay depends on several circumstances. Some nannies are self-employed. In other words, they run a business that supplies nanny services. If that is your case, then it’s the nanny’s responsibility to pay self employment Social Security taxes out of the money you give her. But if you have simply hired a woman to serve as your nanny, then you may have some tax obligations. If you will pay her at least $2,100 per year, then you must deduct Social Security and Medicare taxes from her pay. And you must report those tax payments to the federal government. To learn how to do that, you should read an IRS publication called “Household Employers Tax Guide.” You can find it at their website. Here is a link: www. irs.gov/publications/p926/index.html.

our house. They show up once a week and spend about three or four hours vacuuming, dusting, etc. We don’t have to withhold taxes from the money we pay them, do we?

A: Probably not -- if by “hired some maids” you mean you’ve contracted with one of the many companies that supply maids to households. If so, you are probably paying the company a fee, and then that company, in turn, pays a wage to their employees and deducts taxes from their paychecks. But if you did simply hire some person “off the street” to come in and clean your home, and assuming that person does not run a housecleaning business, i.e., is self-employed, then you must follow the IRS rules outlined in my answer to the first question. Q:

We have hired a nanny and I know we are supposed to deduct taxes from her paycheck. But she has pleaded with us not to do that. She said she would prefer having us just give her that money rather than send it to the government. So far, we’ve abided by her wishes. But I’m wondering if we could get in trouble for this.

my neighbors and others in the community that almost none of them paid Social Security or other taxes for their hired help. And I never saw any of those folks hauled off to jail. Now, if you were planning to run for political office someday, then I’d suggest you immediately get that IRS pamphlet mentioned in the first answer and start doing the right thing and paying those taxes. Every once in a while, you hear a “nannygate” story about a Supreme Court justice nominee or some other high-powered political aspirant who loses his or her chance at an influential position because he or she failed to pay taxes for a nanny or other hired help. And here is one final message directed at your nanny. Just tell her that you heard from an old Social Security guy who interviewed hundreds of retiring nannies, maids and other household workers during his career, most of whom rued their shortsighted decision to forgo the payment of Social Security taxes and were stuck facing their senior years with minimal or even no Social Security or Medicare coverage. It’s something she should seriously think about. * * * If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has a book with all the answers. It’s called “Social Security -- Simple and Smart.” You can find the book at www.creators.com/books. Or look for it on Amazon or other book outlets. To find out more about Tom Margenau and to read past columns and see features from other Creators Syndicate writers and cartoonists, visit the Creators Syndicate website at www.creators.com.

A: If you were asking this question of someone at the IRS, I’m sure they would tell you: “Yes, you are breaking the law!” But since you asked me, a retired old goat who happens to write a column about Social Security issues, I’d say: “Well, COPYRIGHT 2022 CREATORS.COM you’re certainly not alone.” As I said at the start of this column, my wife and I have never hired any household help of any kind, so I have no direct experience in these matters. But we lived for many years in an excluTUES., Feb. 16, 2021 sive suburb of San Diego, California. (We were the poorest people in a neighborhood of fatreview cats and Please carefully. Approaching 65? Here’s What to Know About Enrolling in Medicare DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: Can you give me a brief rundown of Medicare’s enrollment choices along with when and how to sign-up? I will be enrolling soon and want to understand my options ahead of time. --Approaching 65 Dear Approaching: The rules and timetables for Medicare enrollment can be confusing to many new retirees, so it’s smart to plan ahead. Here’s a simplified rundown of what to know. First a quick review. Remember that original Medicare has two parts: Part A, which provides hospital coverage and is free for most people, and Part B which covers doctor’s visits and other medical services, and costs $170.10 per month for most enrollees in 2021. When to Enroll Everyone is eligible for Medicare at age 65, even if your full Social Security retirement age is 66 or later. You can enroll any time during the “initial enrollment period,” which is a sevenmonth period that includes the three months before, the month of, and the three months after your 65th birthday. It’s best to enroll three months before your birth month to ensure your coverage starts when you turn 65. If you happen to miss the seven-month signup window for Medicare Part B, you’ll have to wait until the next “general enrollment period” which runs from Jan. 1 to March 31 with benefits beginning the following July 1st. You’ll also incur a 10 percent penalty for each year you wait beyond your initial enrollment period, which will be tacked on to your monthly Part B premium. You can sign up for premium-free Part A, at any time with no penalty. Working Exceptions Special rules apply if you’re eligible for Medicare and still on the job. If you have health insurance coverage through your employer or your spouse’s employer, and the company has 20 or more employees, you have a “special enrollment period” in which you can sign up. This means that you can delay enrolling in Medicare Part B and are not subject to the 10 percent late-enrollment penalty as long as you sign up within eight months of losing that coverage. Drug Coverage Be aware that original Medicare does not cover prescription medications, so if you don’t have credible drug coverage from an employer or union, you’ll need to buy a Part D drug plan from a private insurance company (see Medicare.gov/plan-compare)

Porcelain Tray Sent a Message

A: Your pitcher was made by Wedgwood in Etruria, England. The words “D’ye Ken John Peel” mean “Do You Know John Peel?” “Ken” is a word from a regional dialect from Scotland and Northern England for the word “know.” The saying was based on a 18th century British folksong about John Peel, a hunter and a farmer. There are also examples of your pitcher in several different sizes and decorated with colors and gold trim. Your pitcher was made in the early 1900s and would probably be worth $125 to $175.

* On Feb. 15, 1898, a massive explosion sinks the battleship USS Maine in Cuba’s Havana harbor, killing 260 crew members. A U.S. Naval Court of Inquiry ruled that the ship was blown up by a mine, with Spain the likely suspect.

Q:

I have enclosed a photo of a porcelain tray that was a wedding gift to an aunt of mine in 1923. I have taken it to several antiques shops and was told in each instance that they had never seen anything like it. Marked on the bottom is the word “Noritake,” and it is in pristine condition. My aunt told me the tray was meant to be a “calling card” receiver. If you can tell me anything about my tray and its approximate value, I will be so grateful.

A:

Nippon Toki Kaisha has produced Noritake Porcelain in Japan since 1904. Leaving a printed calling card on a tray was a Victorian Era ritual that was extremely popular in the mid 1800s and early 1900s. A lady would make her rounds visiting friends and present her personal card to the butler. He would then place it on a special tray that sat on a stand in the entryway. The tray was taken to the lady of the house and she would decide if the visit was convenient. Also, if no one was home, a card was left so it was known who had come calling. By the 1920s, the custom was waning. Your circa 1923 calling card tray decorated with a duck is unusual and very collectible. Similar Noritake porcelain figural trays and dishes can be found selling from $150 to $250.

Wedgwood pitcher was made in the early 1900s.

*** Q: I would appreciate your opinion of the value of my limited edition porcelain plate. It contains a scene of a Native American child holding a white dove and is titled “The White Dove” by Ted DeGrazia. It is a limited edition plate and part of the DeGrazia Children Series. It is in ver y good condition with no chips or cracks.

A:

Ted DeGrazia is famous for his paintings of the Southwest Native Americans. Your plate was made by Gorham China Manufacturing and would probably be worth $50 to $100.

* On Feb. 19, 1851, an angry mob in San Francisco’s business district “tries” two Australian suspects in the robbery and assault of C.J. Jansen, a store owner. When the makeshift jury deadlocked, the suspects were returned to law-enforcement officials. Local authorities convicted the men at a real court trial.

* On Feb. 17, 1915, after encountering a severe snowstorm, the German zeppelin L-4 crash-lands in the North Sea near the Danish coastal town of Varde. The Danish coast guard rescued 11 members of the crew; they were brought to Odense as prisoners to be interrogated. * On Feb. 16, 1968, the first official 911 call is placed in the United States, but 911 was not standard across the country for many years after its adoption by Congress. By 1987, only half of the nation was using the system. * On Feb. 20, 1974, Reg Murphy, an editor of The Atlanta Constitution, is kidnapped by William A.H. Williams after being lured from his home. For the next 49 hours, Williams drove Murphy around the city, stopping to phone in ransom demands to the newspaper. The money was finally delivered to Williams and Murphy was released. Williams was caught and served only nine years in prison. * On Feb. 14, 1990, 3.7 billion miles away from the sun, the Voyager 1 spacecraft takes a photograph of Earth. The picture, known as the Pale Blue Dot, depicts our planet as a nearly indiscernible speck roughly the size of a pixel. Voyager 1’s journey continues.

Noritake Porcelain has been made since 1904.

*** I have enclosed the mark I found on the bottom of a lovely china pitcher that was given to me about ten years ago as a gift. It stands around six inches tall and is decorated with horses, hunters and dogs. The handle is in the shape of a dog.

Q:

* On Feb. 18, 2001, racer Dale Earnhardt Sr. dies in a last-lap crash at the 43rd Daytona 500, the fourth NASCAR driver to die within a nine-month period. Earnhardt, 48, was driving his famous black No. 3 Chevrolet and vying for third place when he collided with another car, then crashed into a wall. (c) 2022 Hearst Communications, Inc.

and tomato wedges. • Although you can pick from many varieties, including melon, pineapple, mango, cranberry, peach, tropical fusion, and blueberry pomegranate, the two favorites seem to be lime and strawberry.

• Without sugar, Jell-O would be colorless, odorless, and flavorless powdered gelatin. So how much of this dessert is sugar? It’s nearly 90% sugar! In 1925, Jell-O received a patent for a sugarless gelatin dessert they called D-Zerta. That was replaced by the present Nutra-Sweet Sugar-Free Jell-O in 1984. About 40% of all Jell-O sold these days is the sugar-free variety.

JELL-O IN HOLLYWOOD • Jell-O went to the movies in 1923, when it was used in the making of legendary director Cecil B. DeMille’s epic silent film “The Ten Commandments.” Jell-O was used to create the special effect of keeping the Red Sea parted as the Israelites escaped Egypt. The studio used a large slab of Jell-O that was sliced in two and filmed close up as it jiggled, creating the illusion of a vertical wall of water. • In the beloved 1939 classic, “The Wizard of Oz,” Jell-O was used to produce the changing colors of the “Horse of a Different Color” in the Land of Oz scenes. When animal rights’ groups objected to the Oz horse being actually painted, the crew made a paste of Jell-O and spread it on the horse’s coat to create six different colors – green, blue, orange, red, yellow, and violet. Because it was so timeconsuming to keep changing the colors on a single horse, four separate horses were used. The only problem was that the horses loved the flavor of the gelatin and continual re-touches were needed as the animals kept licking it off themselves! □

The takeaway has been one of the most varied topics in golf instruction over the years. While there is a wide range of preferences and parameters for club and body movement, the majority of top players tend to fall into a similar category of “one piece takeaways”. The term implies that the club movement away from the ball involves a unison of body movements rather than a drastic leading of one part over the others. One of the common dangers of the takeaway is an overly dominant wrist action that forces the club well to the inside of the target line. By coordinating the arms, shoulders, torso, and hips to move together, with little independent hand action, the club will move in a neutral, on plane journey.

The first two feet of club travel should involve the chest turning to the right while the “triangle” of the arms and hands stays passive. The lower body many times has to make a slight shift and rotation to allow the upper body’s action. The grip end of the club may stay aligned to the navel during this sequence. Avoid excessive wrist or forearm rotation in this phase.
