Experts estimate that there are over 20,000 species of flowering plants in North America, belonging to about 300 different families. Wildflowers are those that grow in the wild without cultivation.
• There are “native” wildflowers that are indigenous to the continent and “naturalized” wildflowers that have been introduced from other parts of the world. Native and naturalized wildflowers share a common distinction; they are able to grow on their own in nature. • Wildflowers can grow in both cold and hot areas as well as in wet and dry places. Barren deserts may look so hostile and arid that it appears nothing could grow, but even after decades without a trace of precipitation wildflowers will begin to appear soon after a soaking rain. Conversely, wet marshes and swamps may appear unfriendly to flower life, yet many varieties of wildflowers flourish there. Many people have attempted to cultivate wildflower gardens. Some wildflowers are agreeable to this, and others resist it. • Wildflowers are varied in looks, growth forms and usefulness. Some are considered grand in appearance and desireable for home, gardens and parks, while others are a nuisance on our lawns and roadsides. Some are unusual with “personalities” ADVERTISING PROOF that are quite amazing.

• Susan Magdalane Boyle was born April 1, 1961 in Blackburn, West Lothian, Scotland, the youngest of nine children to Patrick Boyle, a miner, World War II veteran and singer at the popular Bishop’s Blaize Pub, and Bridget, a shorthand typist. Both parents were immigrants from County Donegal, Ireland. Her mother was 47 when Susan was born, and the difficult birth briefly deprived her baby of oxygen. As a result, Susan was later diagnosed with having some learning difficulties. Because of this, she was bullied as a child and teased by schoolmates who nicknamed her “Suzie Simple”.

She lived an ordinary and rather obscure life as a single woman still living in her parental home at age 46 in Blackburn, West Lothian, Scotland. But life for Susan Boyle changed dramatically in April 2009, when she timidly stepped before a microphone and astonished a television audience of 10 million viewers with her rich and powerful singing voice and a flawless delivery that gained immediate international attention.

WILDFLOWERS (from page one) • Skunk cabbage is a swamp-loving plant that is well named. It blooms in February and March in swampy areas and produces an oddlooking flower before producing any leaves. The flowers resemble pins protruding from a pincushion, and when the plant is bruised it emits an offensive, repugnant odor -- much like the animal for which it’s named! • Native Americans used the orange sap of the bloodroot plant to color or paint their faces for warfare or ceremonies and to dye baskets. The flowers on a bloodroot plant are so delicate that it cannot be picked successfully. The petals fall off with the slightest touch or breeze. ● It was computer guru Jef Raskin who made the following sage observation: “Imagine if every Thursday your shoes exploded if you tied them the usual way. This happens to us all the time with computers, and yet nobody thinks of complaining.” ● Most people think of Abraham Lincoln as an iconic president and the Great Emancipator, but many don’t realize that he also was an inventor. He was issued patent No. 6,469 for an inflatable device he designed to help buoy river-going vessels over shoals. ● In Somalia it is common for a girl to be engaged before she is even born. ● If you get squeamish around bugs, you might not want to read the following little tidbit of information: Nearly every human carries around tiny eyelash mites that live out their entire lives on our faces -- including mating and laying eggs there. ● Due to a series of earthquakes in 1811 and 1812, the Mississippi River reversed course and ran backward for a time. ● An enterprising inventor named Andrew Schneider has come up with the latest geek apparel: a solar bikini. For about a century now, cities and towns have had to come up with solutions to the problem of parking the ever-increasing number of cars belonging to visitors, shoppers and workers. The problem is as old as the automobile itself, so Tidbits takes you on a tour this week for a look at some of the more ingenious methods devised to solve them. • Whether called a car park, parking garage, parking structure, parking ramp, parking deck, parkade or some other name, buildings equipped to hold lots of cars have become a necessity for crowded cities. Unique parking structures are found in cities around the world. Architects have not only worked to solve parking problems but have designed some downright elaborate and memorable structures. • One of the earliest, if not the earliest, parking garages was the Botanic Gardens Garage in Glasgow, Scotland, built between 1906 and 1912. It had cages for the cars and a distinctive façade of green and white glazed terracotta tiles. Preservationists have been fighting to categorize it as an historical site to prevent developers from demolishing it. • The first known multi-story car structure in the United States was built in 1918 for the Hotel LaSalle in Chicago. It was demolished in 2005. • Designers of those first parking structures would be amazed at the size, design efficiencies and automation available today. • Cologne, Germany, has Europe’s longest parking structure. Rheinauhafen is an underground
• An automobile vending maching? Volkswagen’s Autostadt in Woofsburg, Germany, is an amusement park based on an automotive theme as well as a place to purchase a new car. It includes a car museum, car-factory tours, driving courses and more. Two 20-story car silos housing 800 new Volkswagens are attention-grabbing sites. If you decide to buy, a central robotic arm will travel up the tower to the proper level, slide the vehicle on to a portable ramp, and deliver your car to you with an odometer that reads zero. It’s also possible for visitors to travel Interior view of Autostadt car up the silo in silo in Woofsburg, Germany. the same way the cars do for a view of the massive towers’ interior. • A parking area combined with shopping, restaurants, etc. in Tokyo Bay is quite a unique tourist destination. Even though it is expensive to access by toll, the Umihotaru, “floating car park,” is a must see for visitors. Its design resembles a cruise ship, and it is built on an artificial island where Japan’s longest tunnel, the Aqualine (8.7 miles; 14.1 km), exits to a bridge that carries traffic to the island, with ample space for parking.

• Another parking structure connected to water is Chicago’s Marina City on the Chicago River. This massive complex was built to discourage city residents from moving to the suburbs. Two 65-story towers that were part of the complex and completed in 1964 contain 18 floors devoted just for parking. Each tower of the “corncob” structure can accommodate 450 vehicles.

Q: I absolutely loved Jeremy Irons’ guest-
starring appearance on “Law and Order: SVU.” Any chance he’ll return? -- Kylie F., Baton Rouge, La.
A:
Your wish (and mine) has been granted. Jeremy has been tapped to return to “SVU” as Dr. Cap Jackson, where he’ll help Benson and Stabler with a case. In this case, a piano teacher (played against type by “V”’s Elizabeth Mitchell) is suspected of sexually assaulting and murdering one of her students. The episode is scheduled to air March 30. ***
Q:
When is “Damages” coming back, and on what station? -- C.H., via e-mail
A:
“Damages,” which originated on FX, has been picked up for two more seasons by DirecTV to air on the 101 Network (like the beloved “Friday Night Lights”). The legal drama starring Glenn Close, Ted Danson and Rose Byrne is set to return for season four in July 2011. ***
Q:
“Fame” is one of my favorite shows. Are there any plans for it to be shown again on any of the many networks that now exist? -- Jerry D., Ocean City, Md.

Home Equity Loans: Not What You Think Thinking of freeing up some financial assets by dipping into your home’s equity? If you’re looking at this tactic as a method of picking up some needed ® cash, here are a few things you should know:
Everyday CHEAPSKATE
Hunt not a savings account. ► EquitybyisMary a concept, Equity, which is the difference between what you owe on your home and the amount you could now sell it for, is just a number. It is a theory; it is not cash in a savings account. Equity does not become cash until you sell the house and give up possession. In the meantime, a home equity loan means you agree to make payments that are mostly interest, and that can plunge you deeply into debt.
► You’ll have a false sense of well-being. Transferring debt to a home equity loan gives a false sense of relief. Paying off credit card debt may feel righteous, but you are only moving your old debt around and replacing it with a new one. Soon the old feelings of entitlement will surface, and before you know it, the cards are maxed out again. But now you have the equity loan to pay, too. ► It can be costly. That lower-interest home equity loan could easily end up costing considerably more than the higher-interest credit card debt if you spread it over 15 years rather than use the current payment schedule you have with your other creditors. Example: I recently compared that very same scenario for a couple considering a home equity loan to pay the $15,000 they owed in credit card debt. If they were to shift that debt to a $15,000 Home Equity Loan (HEL) at 7.25 percent, it would cost them an additional $9,647 in interest and take 15 years to repay. Using my Rapid DebtRepayment Plan (see http://www.DebtProofLiving.
Please review carefully. Double check: Spelling Prices com), they would be on track to repay the same you would have had to Phone pay forNumber(s) it! amount of debt in just 37 months, costing them less than $1,500 in interest. ► You could find yourself underwater without a snorkel. Borrowing against home equity could put you in a dangerous and precarious position. Consider this: If the real estate market should go through another period of major devaluation, which is a real possibility in these uncertain times, your mortgage plus your HEL in this case will automatically exceed your home’s market value. Now you will find yourself “upside down” and stuck with a home you not only can’t afford, but can’t sell, either.

A Chance To Do Better Following is a letter I received recently: “For the past few months, “Maggie,” our 2-and-ahalf-year-old Shar Pei-Boxer mix, has been getting really aggressive toward my boyfriend, his mom, his 2-year-old nephew and me. “Lately, she’s been growling at our nephew when he tries to hug her and at our smaller puppy when he’s merely playing with a toy. Last night, she jumped on the bed and woke me. When I sat up, she started snarling at me. I took her downstairs to the cage, and she was fine until it came time to actually go into the cage. At that point, she snapped at the smaller dog and then turned toward me and snarled. “Initially, I yelled at her, but then I tried to calm her down by saying in a soothing voice, “Maggie, it’s OK. Maggie, calm down.” I reached in slowly to pet her, and she bit me and drew blood for the third or fourth time now. Until today, I blamed her for acting that way. But I realize now that it is our fault. The “punishment aggression” description covers basically everything we have done to discipline her. “I never knew that my behavior could affect a dog so much. I grew up seeing my parents discipline our dogs that way. Now I have no idea what I can do for her since her aggression is our fault. Do you have any advice? I really, really want to try to fix the situation. But I production just can’t keep her around if she is going 1 MIN: 45 HRS:nephew.” to snap at our stamp There’s a lot to learn from a letter like this. AdVenture Media The letter writer demonstrates the importance of leading by example. She learned from her parents the only methods they knew of disciplining a dog -outdated, uninformed punishing tactics that involve yelling, bullying and possibly worse. Minute by minute, her nephew was learning the same. Her story illustrates the value of personality testing and training. Getting a feel for a dog’s personality before making him your dog empowers you to select the best fit for you, your family and your lifestyle -- and enables you to judge his ability to relate to children, if necessary. Your dog’s personality also determines the necessary method of training and discipline. You don’t train or discipline a shy dog the same way you would a dominant dog. Everything is different, right down to the tone of your voice. Many dog owners in similar situations never own up to their role. Instead, they deny a problem CASEY’S CORNER: Turn to page 10 Tidbits® of Coachella Valley

or LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol level above 150, and a ratio of the LDL divided by the HDL (high-density lipoprotein) or good cholesterol above 5. Being diagnosed with high blood pressure (a top or systolic blood pressure above 135 or a bottom or diastolic above 90), having diabetes or prediabetes and being obese are important risk factors, as well. Finally, an elevated C-reactive protein shows evidence of inflammation in the body and is associated with a higher risk of coronary artery disease. For high risk individuals, an EKG and a stress test may be a consideration. If an abnormality is noted, referral to a cardiologist is warranted to determine the extent and severity of coronary artery disease. Severe narrowing of a specific coronary artery indicates an increased risk of death from a heart attack, and an angioplasty or open heart surgery is usually recommended. Fortunately, the need for an invasive intervention in high-risk asymptomatic individuals is rare. Medical management to reduce the risk of further progression of coronary artery disease becomes critically important. This involves compulsive control of high blood pressure, treatment of diabetes, lowering cholesterol and prescribing medications known to reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes, such as beta blockers and ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibitors. As with virtually every aspect of health, too much testing is rarely a good idea. Appropriate management and screening for heart disease will assure the best possible care for those who need it.

CASEY’S CORNER (from page 9) exists or dance around it with a litany of excuses. The writer of this letter has had a very important breakthrough. She now understands the extent that an owner’s behavior can affect a dog. Anyone who reads this column regularly knows what’s coming next: A 2-year-old cannot live safely under the same roof with a dog like Maggie. The first new household rule should be that Maggie has zero access to the nephew -- not even supervised access, because it only takes a second for something to go terribly wrong. All of the adults involved in this situation have an equal and immediate obligation to Maggie to do two things: enlist the services of a professional trainer and find her a better home. She needs an adults-only home with people who understand the importance Ad Proof: of boundaries and consistent training -- neither of Bram’s which has anything to do with punishment. YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margeneau
What’s With the Disability Bashing? Can we please stop bashing people getting Social Security disability benefits? After I offered my fact sheet that cleared up myths and misunderstanding associated with the financial operations of the Social Security program, and provided some proposals for reforming the system to prepare for the onslaught of baby-boomer retirees, I can’t tell you how many e-mails I got from readers that went something like this: “I’ll tell you how we can fix Social Security. We can greatly reduce or even eliminate benefits paid to people getting disability. We all know that if we cut their government checks, most of these deadbeats would go out and get a job the next day!” That is total poppycock on a number of different levels. And I’ll use today’s column to explain why. First, I’m always puzzled why so many people simply assume that most folks getting disability benefits are pulling a fast one over on the rest of us. I suppose they think that these men and women have figured out slick ways to scam the system to get something they aren’t due. What’s with that? Some former colleagues have speculated that there is an undercurrent of jealousy involved. I find that hard to believe. Why would you be jealous of someone who has cancer or kidney disease or mental illness? However, I’ve got to admit that on a lesser level, I’ve felt this myself. There have been times when I’ve pulled into a crowded grocery store parking lot and had trouble finding a space. Then I saw someone getting out of a car parked in the “handicapped” section right next to the front door. And I muttered under my breath: “That person sure doesn’t look disabled to me!” Thankfully, I quickly rise above such
Tidbits of Coachella Valley
Page 11
petty thinking and realize I’m wrong. I wouldn’t want to trade places with any one of those folks parked in the handicapped spaces. But getting a handicapped sticker for your car is one thing. Getting Social Security disability benefits is an entirely different matter. Please dear readers, believe me: As someone who worked with the disability program for many years, I know you have to be really severely disabled to qualify for benefits. Of course, I’m not naive enough to think that out of the millions of Social Security disability beneficiaries, there aren’t a few bad apples in that big barrel that are getting benefits they don’t deserve. But I assure you their numbers are few and far between. The Social Security disability program is universally recognized as one of the most difficult programs to qualify for. You simply don’t get benefits if you have a bad back or a bum knee. You must have a severe physical or mental impairment that is expected to keep you out of work for at least 12 months -- or a condition that is terminal. Many of you wrote to complain about “drug addicts and alcoholics” getting benefits. Let me clear up that myth. You DO NOT get Social Security disability benefits simply because you are an addict or alcoholic. But you might get benefits if you have problems associated with those addictions. For example, you could qualify for disability if you have severe liver disease -- a condition that might have been brought on by excessive drinking. But that’s no different than someone getting benefits because he or she has lung cancer brought on by heavy smoking. Having explained how truly difficult it is to qualify for Social Security disability benefits, I can tell you from experience that everyone seems to know someone (a brother-in-law, a neighbor, that guy in the handicapped parking space) whom they believe is getting such benefits fraudulently. But no one seems to do anything about it but gripe and complain. If you’re one of those who knows someone you believe is getting Social Security disability benefits they are not due, I challenge you to turn that person in. Call the Social Security fraud hotline at 800-2690271. Or go online at www.socialsecurity.gov and click on “Reporting Fraud” right on their homepage. BEL AIR GREENS Your report can be anonymous. 6th pg. I can also tell you from Nov. experience 21st, 2010 that 99 percent of you will not do this. That tells me two things. First: people will believe what they want to believe. They think that government is corrupt and inefficient, so they want to believe there are .. a bunch S ’ . of deadbeats who snookered the bureaucrats and IT E are ripping off the Social Security system. But the R lack of fraud reporting also tells meEthat deep down H these folks know it’s not true. And now on to my second reason why the allegation that reducing Social Security disability benefits would help “save Social Security” is pure poppycock. We could eliminate the entire Social Security disability program tomorrow, and it would have ZERO impact on the long-range problems facing the
Social Security program. Those problems have everything to do with aging baby boomers retiring in record numbers over the next 20 years or so. They have nothing to do with alleged disability deadbeats. Besides, the Social Security disability program is funded separately from the retirement program. And it faces its own long-range problems. As all we baby boomers get older, many of our bodies are breaking down before we reach retirement age, and we are filing for disability benefits thousands of times each day. That’s severely straining the disability trust fund, which is financed by about one-half of 1 percent of the Social Security payroll tax. This wasn’t a tax carved out of the retirement program. It was added to the payroll tax in 1956 specifically to pay for disability benefits. So please readers, stop bellyaching about your disabled neighbor and brother-in-law. They’re not ripping you off. They are getting benefits they have worked and paid for; benefits that probably took them a long time to get; and benefits that wouldn’t be paid to them without all kinds of medical evidence to back their claims. I think a big part of the problem is that we don’t want to face the facts about the difficult choices we’ll have to make to keep Social Security solvent for the next several generations. Instead of supporting real reform -- like raising the retirement age or increasing payroll taxes -- we find it easier to claim that cutting disability benefits will solve all our problems.

Twist-N-Mixer Shakes Up Collectors Q:
This is a photo of a silver cocktail shaker set that was handed down by my late mother-in-law. She received the set as a wedding gift in 1922. “Twist-N-Mixer” is etched on the bottom of the shaker, along with three shields, a hawk and the number “E394.” The cups and shaker are all marked with the letters “EPNS.” I would appreciate any information that you could provide. Do you know the value of the set?

WILDFLOWERS (from page page 3)
• Do you know which U.S. First Lady is considered the “Environmental First Lady”? Claudia Alta Taylor Johnson, otherwise known as Lady Bird, was the wife of our 36th President, Lyndon Johnson. (The nickname was supposedly given to her by a nursemaid when she was a child who said she was “as purty as a lady bird.”) • While she was First Lady, Mrs. Johnson created the First Lady’s Committee for a More Beautiful Capital. She wanted to create natural landscaping to preserve the beauty of the nation’s capital. Later she expanded the program to include the entire nation. • In 1982, Lady Bird Johnson and actress Helen Hayes founded the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, originally called the National Wildflower Research Center, “to introduce people to the beauty and diversity of wildflowers and other native plants.” • The center in Austin, Texas, has public gardens, woodlands and meadows and is an internationally influential research center. In 2006, the center became an Organized Research Unit of the University of Texas at Austin.

Too many players put an emphasis on “hitting” the ball when putting instead of concentrating on getting the ball rolling properly. A good roll includes topspin, which results in the ball dying toward the hole instead of trailing off to the left or right of the hole. Many players set up to a putt with too much weight on their forward foot. This causes a steeper putting stroke which results in backspin. The ball jumps a bit, and you don’t get the topspin you are looking for.
