• Although there were circuses in ancient Rome, the modern circus as we know it has been around since the late 1700s. Philip Astley premiered his circus in 1768 in England and is credited with bringing trick horse-riding into the circus ring. A few years later, he added jugglers and clowns to his entourage.

Take the first step in creating a lasting legacy for your family.
Derived from the Homeric Greek term “krikos”, the word circus means “circle” or “ring”. It is first found in 14th century English. The circus in ancient Rome was a large spectator arena for the exhibition of chariot races, equestrian shows, staged battles, trained animals and acrobats.

• The world’s first human cannonball performance came along in 1877 when a 14-year-old girl, Rossa “Zazel” Richter, was shot from a cannon in London. Although promoters would have the public believe that the person is launched by gunpowder, it’s just for the visual effect of the smoke and the loud boom. The propelling force is actually a spring or a blast of compressed air.

JIM ABBOTT (from page 2) was the winner of the Golden Spikes Award as the outstanding college baseball player in the United States. By Samantha Weaver
● It was 20th-century German-American poet, novelist and short-story writer Charles Bukowski who made the following observation: “The difference between a democracy and a socialist dictatorship is that in a democracy you vote first and take orders later; in a dictatorship you don’t have to waste your time voting.” ● In the 18 months that the Pony Express operated, carrying mail across the Wild West and its myriad hazards and dangers, only one pouch of mail was lost. ● It takes approximately 10 months for a Las Vegas slot machine to pay for itself. ● Benito Mussolini, Italian dictator and leader of that country’s National Fascist Party, grew up poor with a blacksmith father who, history indicates, spent most of his meager earnings on his mistress. When Benito was 27 years old, he met a 16-yearold girl named Rachele Guidi -- who was the daughter of that same mistress and her deceased husband. Rachele eventually became Mussolini’s second wife. ● At one time, some churches banned the playing of Wagner’s “The Bridal Chorus,” also known as “Here Comes the Bride,” because the music was considered to be sexy and vulgar. ● You might not be surprised to learn that editor, lexicographer and textbook pioneer Noah Webster lobbied Congress to make his plan for simplified spelling the law of the land. Had he been successful, the United States would have been the only country in which incorrect spelling would be legally punishable. ● Many people claim that Worcestershire sauce does an excellent job of cleaning copper and brass. ● In Chicago, if you have a hatpin hidden under a lapel, you are considered to be carrying a concealed weapon *** Thought for the Day: “Of all the preposterous assumptions of humanity over humanity, nothing exceeds most of the criticisms made on the habits of the poor by the well-housed, well-warmed, and wellfed.” -- Herman Melville

LIONS AND
TIGERS What would the circus be without lions and tigers? Let’s investigate some of the traits of these big cats, both members of the genus Panthera. • There are four members of the genus Panthera: Lions, tigers, jaguars and leopards. Due to the special structural design of their larynx, these four cats are the only species that have the ability to roar. Also unlike all other cats, they do not have the ability to purr. • Lions have been a popular part of animal menageries since Roman times and have been sought after by zoos since the 1700s. While kept in captivity, a lion can live longer than 20 years; however, in the wild, a male lion rarely lives longer than 10 years. This is due to continual injuries received in fights they encounter with rival males in the wild.
to overheat if he overexerts. Most lions are inactive for about 20 hours a day, with two hours a day spent walking, 50 minutes eating and some hunting done at dawn. • A male lion needs about 15 pounds of meat per day, the female about 11 pounds. A meal might consist of zebra, giraffe, gazelle, warthogs or wildebeest. The killing of large prey is no problem for a lion with its canine teeth over three inches in length. • Catnip can affect lions and tigers as well as house cats. It excites them because it contains a chemical that resembles an excretion of the dominant female’s urine. • The tiger is the largest of the four Panthera cats, reaching nearly 11 feet in length and weighing up to 660 pounds. • Tiger cubs are born blind and weigh only about 2 to 3 pounds. They live on milk for 6 to 8 weeks before the female begins taking them to kill locations to feed. Tigers have fully developed canines by 16 months of age, but they do not begin making their own kills until they are about about 18 months old.

The pattern is not just in the animal’s fur & but extends to its skin underneath as well. If you FLAGS were toFLAGPOLE shave a tigerSALES the stripes would still be there! We don’t all see each other all the time, but there is a great deal of genuine fondness and familial feeling. Which Bills To Pay When You Cannot Pay Them All Everyday CHEAPSKATE
Dear Mary: I’ve read your book “Debt® Proof Living,” and it inspired me to start a contingency fund. I am proud to say that I have saved $550by soMary far.Hunt (Forgive my excitement, but I never have saved that much and for so long before.) I am a single parent and recently moved back home with my mother to get out of my financial hole and back on my feet. I have some credit card debt, medical bills and back rent. Even with my reduced rent living with my mother, I am still unable to pay all of my bills because of child care costs. I want to start paying down some of these obligations but I can’t possibly do it all at once. Can you please advise me on which bills should be considered the most important ones to pay first? -- M.E.B., New York Dear M.E.B.: Here is the rule of thumb: Do not make payments on nonessential bills when you have not paid essential ones, even if your nonessential creditors are breathing down your neck. Essential bills are those you must pay for the preservation of life. Food, rent, medicine, insurance and taxes are good examples. Nonessential debts are financial obligations that will have a lesser or delayed effect if you withhold payment for a limited time. I suggest that your contingency fund is an essential bill because this is your only hope of reversing your situation and finally being able to pay

off all of your bills. Once you’ve paid your essential bills, if you have money remaining, move to the nonessentials. Which of those bills if not paid represents the most immediate consequence? Answering that question will help you with your decision. You’re going through a very difficult season right now, and I know it feels as if it will be like this forever. But things will get better. Even in the midst of your financial shortfall, I hope you will add giving to your recovery plan. You have a lot to be grateful for. You have a place to live and a mother willing to help you get through these hard times. Giving some of your money, even if it is a small amount, out of a heart of gratitude will help you find contentment. Giving proves the condition of your heart. Giving builds your faith and invites God’s supernatural intervention into your finances. It’s the right thing to do. * * * Dear Mary: When my kitchen floor was installed, they used white grout. Now the floor always looks dingy and dirty because the white grout is no longer white. Any suggestions on what I could do to remedy this problem? -- Julie C., Minnesota

have accumulated over 30 years. A garage sale wouldn’t bring in enough money for them, and I’m sure it would be the same with an antiques store or eBay. I really don’t want strangers from Craigslist coming to my house, either. I don’t know how to find the value of the items or how to get rid of them. What can I do? -- P.S., e-mail Dear P.S.: I hate to break it to you, but your things are worth exactly what someone would pay for them, not the values listed in a book or collectibles guide. Forget your preconceived notions of what these items are worth, and list them on eBay. That’s the safest way to go, with the largest audience of motivated buyers. Get what you can while you can. And good luck! Do you have a question for Mary? E-mail her at mary@ everydaycheapskate.com, or write to Everyday Cheapskate, P.O. Box 2135, Paramount, CA 90723. Cats, Dogs and Other People By Matthew Margolis
A $10,000 Lesson I’ve been working with a 1-year-old Weimaraner. His owners started looking for a trainer after he did more than $10,000 worth of damage to two living room sofas. After. When I visited their home for the first time, I walked into the living room and couldn’t believe my eyes. It looked like a supersized shredder had attacked the couches. They were more foam than furniture. The owners described the problems they were having with their dog -- jumping, barking, chewing, stealing food, knocking over the kids and guests. The irony, of course, is that for a year they had dismissed the idea of dog training because they didn’t want to spend the money. These folks were under the impression that their oversized pup would grow out of it soon. Two things about that: 1) Dogs mature around age 2 to 2-and-a-half. 2) Puppies grow into -- not out of -- bad habits left unchecked. They told me their beloved Weimaraner acted out when home alone because he was “angry that they left him. I assured them he was not angry, and that it was much more likely that he had no reason to think they cared about the state of their house. When a puppy is left alone with free rein of the house and no boundaries to speak of, how is he to know what’s what? production They explained their quandary: They can’t 1 in 45 yard because the neighbors HRS: MIN:the leave him outside complain aboutstamp his constant barking. And they don’t AdVenture Media feel comfortable leaving him in a crate inside because they worry that he’s bored and lonely. Here comes the benefit of calling a professional: Options. For the barking problem, I recommend the citronella collar as an effective training tool. When the dog barks, the collar emits a short burst of citronella spray. The dog dislikes the spray and stops barking. Eventually, he gets the idea that he can avoid the spray entirely by not barking. Your neighbors start sending you flowers instead of hate mail. The crate is an effective tool to use while your puppy is growing up, being housebroken, adjusting to the house rules and undergoing training. No puppy should have the run of the house, especially when home alone. A crate should never be used as a punishment. Your dog’s crate should be a comfortable, safe, TidbitsŽ of Coachella Valley

YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margeneau
Social Security’s Dirty Little Secret: SSI Q:
Like you, I am a former employee of the Social Security Administration. I wish you would lay it on the line for your readers and tell them how Nixon tried to demolish Social Security by cleverly naming the “Supplemental Security Income” program to sound like Social Security and then give it to SSA to run. He certainly succeeded in demoralizing SSA employees, and I think that welfare program came close to destroying Social Security. Why don’t you come clean with your readers by airing some of the agency’s dirty laundr y?
A:
Nixon! A demolished federal agency! Demoralized employees! Dirty laundry! This sounds like the makings of a real scandal. Although the person, who e-mailed this question to me, is a bit paranoid in his assessment of President Nixon’s role in the creation of the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program, I must admit that he does echo the concerns of more than a few employees and former employees of the Social Security Administration. And it even touches a bit of a raw nerve with me. It certainly makes for an interesting story and I hope a good column. At the same time, I think it will help clear up some confusion that so many people have about Social Security and SSI. To start the story, we have to go back to the early 1970s. Prior to that time, the Social Security Administration was chugging nicely along as a rather quiet and friendly federal agency. It had a reputation for good and efficient service. It was known as a great place to work. The programs we administered

You are right, germ warfare is a challenge, and especially for travelers. Germs never sleep. A doctor’s No. 1 recommendation is to wash your hands with soap and water frequently. Also, keep sanitized alcohol-based wipes and sprays with you at all times -- and use them habitually. Major germ battlefields are public restrooms. Door handles, faucets, sinks, toilets and floors are loaded with them. Use wipes or paper towels as much as possible when opening doors, turning on water faucets and flushing toilets. Airplane travel is inherently unhealthy because of the close confinement of passengers. Danger areas are the pillows, blankets, seats, pull-down trays and reading material in the bins. Your own blow-up pillow and a fleece blanket will help protect you. Use the toilets as infrequently as possible. Walk the aisles for exercise. For hotels, take pack zip-lock storage bags to enclose the TV remote, be wary of the coffeemaker, and do not go barefoot. Bring your own pillowcases and pack paper cups for beverages. Drink lots of water to avoid dehydration. When renting a car, use wipes for the keys, seats, steering wheel and gear shift. A small flashlight can be attached to your key ring, and a small emergency medicine kit could prove valuable. Try to avoid rubbing your eyes, mouth and nose when traveling. Take your vitamins. Ask your doctor for extra prescriptions, possible vaccinations, an emergency phone number and his e-mail. Don’t spoil your trip by agonizing over health issues. We catch colds even at home. Hopefully, awareness and friends’ other recommendations will prove fruitful! * * *

Q:
Enclosed is a photo of a dr y sink that I recently bought for $150. I knew it was not a bargain, but I wanted it anyway. It was painted, so I had it professionally stripped and refinished. Made out of walnut, it stands 35 inches tall and 35.5 inches wide. The leaf drawer pulls are also car ved out of walnut. It has two doors that open in the middle with a pull on the right side door. On the inside, there are bars to hold washcloths and towels. I think it was made about 1860. Could you please tell me about its worth?
A:
Actually, you have a washstand or commode rather than a dry sink. Your washstand was made in the Victorian era due to towel bars being connected to the backsplash or gallery, carved leaf wood pulls, a single round pull on the right door and a scrolled front towel bar. Many similar pieces were made of maple, pine, or birch; they were produced by either individual cabinet makers or early factories. Your washstand was made around 1860 and would probably be worth $475 to $575.

He was married to another famous circus performer, Lillian Leitzel, an aerialist who performed stunts on rings. PHOBIAS (continued): • Some phobias relate to what’s up above, such as the sun (heliophobia), the clouds (nephophobia), the moon (selenophobia), and the stars (siderophobia). Some folks are just afraid of looking up – they are called anablephobes. • Not all phobias seem that abnormal or uncommon. Lots of people might have a fear of death, known as necrophobia. But those with an extreme form might be terrified of being buried alive. A nosocomephobe has a fear of hospitals, a verminophobe is afraid of germs, and a hydrophobe has an irrational fear of water. • Individuals suffering from extreme agoraphobia rarely leave their homes, due to their fear of public or open spaces and the inescapable situations that may occur there. Only home is safe. • Some phobias can be a learned behavior that comes from listening to others describe a traumatic event. • John Ringling managed the family business after the death of several of his brothers. Once one of the world’s wealthiest men, he lost nearly the entire family fortune during the Great Depression, and when he died in 1936, he had $311 in the bank. His nephew took over the operation, and in 1967, the circus was sold to the Feld family, who operates it today.
